We spoke with friend of the pod @vicsanusi of @blackgalslivin to talk all things colourism, from our experiences to what we’ve seen on the screen and twitter streets. As always let us know what you think and show us some love on iTunes, consistency is coming plz
Well Blactually's first live episode! In collaboration with 3º09 and London Design Festival, Gena and Natalie sat down with Elsie Owusu OBE, a Black Ghana-born British architect about
It's better late than never... is what they said, shout outs to Riley. A quarter late but still cute, here's our 2017 recap episode featuring the guy we left behind, Producer Ben. We talk about our favourite music of 2017 (how could we not), our fave shows, readings, what we are leaving behind in 2017 and carrying into 2018. Also Natalie breaks down how 2017's catchphrase of 'men are trash' is 2018's motto of 'the patriarchy is trash' and *shock horror* Producer Ben gets it. (from a cis-het perspective): New month, new episode! Gena and Natalie talk all things sex but make it intellectual (insert ANTM gif here). Starting with Insecure, we chat about what sex looks like in the mainstream for black women touching on condom-gate, female satisfaction and how Lawrence and Tasha deserve an EGOT for the finale sex scene of season 1. We also look at sexual health, colorism, class, societal taboos and whether sexual education started from the Birds and Bees talk or nah. This episode, Gena and Natalie discuss how Solange is their spirit animal and how A Seat At The Table continues to slay scalps and souls across the globe with live audio featured from Solange's set at Lovebox 2017. They also chat about how the carefree movement shouldn't require you to have flowers, crop tops and clear skin to be involved. Roadmen can be carefree too. Then onto supporting Black British initatives: Barbershop Chronicles and Scanning Social. In Thankful for the Culture, Gena pays tribute to #LawrenceHive for his stroke, whilst Natalie celebrates comedy and feeling seen through the time lines of @BeeBabs @Bimadew and @SmileGena See the show notes for more on wellblactually.tumblr.com and tweet at #WellBlactually or @WellBlactually Music: "Cranes in The Sky (Q The Sun Remix)" by Q The Sun (soundcloud.com/qthesun)
'[Moonlight shows] ...we don't have to bend and shape black stories for white audiences or even straight audiences'. - @SmileGena Back with the jump off, we give a blactual take on films having a moment, Moonlight and Get Out. Whilst Moonlight won Best Picture and our hearts, Get Out is where we debate whether it's a film for US or racism 101 for white people. Check our feature in a @Decorum.DCRM short about being Black and living in Britain and Gena gives props to @imtiredproject x @blackblossoms and @Paulaakpan for her highlight of the week. In our new segment, Thankful for the Culture, we give thanks with a grateful heart for Twitter, Grime Meets Politics and Health (Take Care!). “Growing up Black-British, it’s interesting, it’s fun and it’s different for everyone.” - Gena-Mour “shmur” Barrett Gena and Natalie discuss formative favourites from Dizzie Rascal’s Boy In Da Corner, Channel U to Piczo, Bebo and the past and present state of individuality. Hear us in our white woman’s voice*jk* declare our experiences of living within the hyphen. We are inclusive of all anime hairstyles, bobbles, ribbons and baby hairs included. Black-British and Black American? Hear our nuances between the two as we delve into our experience in and outside of school. Also: SHOUT OUT TO SOUTH LONDON. Sorry, it needed to be said. Remember #frankoceanwatch? Well Gena didn’t just see Frank Ocean, but she spoke to him and told him to have a great time in Paris. In this episode, we talk all things TV and diversity, both homeside and stateside. With shows like Luke Cage, Atlanta and Ackee and Saltfish arriving on the scene, we discuss whether the golden age of diverse TV has returned and why it matters. We also pay homage to Trouble, Desmond’s, Goodness Gracious Me and Three Non-Blondes and their role in opening the British spectrum of comedy to including people of colour in not only consuming comedy but creating laughs too.
