Oh well. Uber Eats uber alles!
Chris sits down with Andy Cato & Tom Findlay, otherwise known as Groove Armada. In this conversation, Andy & Tom share stories about the first time they met, signing with Jive Records and growing Lovebox from a club night to one of the countries biggest music festivals. I'm not a financial advisor; nothing I write in Superpowers for Good should be considered investment advice. You should seek appropriate counsel before making investment decisions. I have received no compensation from the issuer profiled.Devin: What do you see as your superpower?Jean: My superpowers. I really love this term. Probably many superpowers are required to build a company. So I would say that one, which I've experienced a lot, is probably resilience.Jean Gregoire, founder and CEO of LoveBox, joined me for this conversation about his purpose-oriented tech company, its product and purpose and its current crowdfunding campaign.“What is a LoveBox?” I ask.Jean explains:So it's a it's a it's a box that has two main functions. First of all, connecting you to your loved ones so you can connect your whole family to the LoveBox. It's a box that you have at your home. There is a mobile app pairing with the box to let all your loved ones send you messages through this box.The heart in front of the love box beats whenever you have a message until you read it. So it's a bit like sending a postcard or a greeting card but from a distance. It brings a great source of joy to the person who receives messages. The second function of the box is more in a self-care way. Basically, you can subscribe to content that you can receive on your box every single day, like positive affirmations or any kind of content that makes you feel, feel better and have a better life.Jean made an important observation about technology and its role in our lives. “With technology, we tend to be a bit too focused on the technical functions of a product. ‘Oh, this product allows me to receive a message.' But I think we should be much more aware of the role of the purpose.”The purpose of the LoveBox is to deliver joy and happiness.Jean launched the company after creating a single device for his girlfriend when they were separated by the Atlantic Ocean. In 2017, after the duo found joy in the device, they decided to offer it to others via Kickstarter.Today, the company is raising money via Wefunder.Over the past six years, to build the company, Jean has leveraged his superpower: resilience.AI Episode Summary* Jean Gregoire is the CEO and co-founder of Lovebox, a technology company focused on spreading love and joy.* Lovebox is a physical box connected to a mobile app that allows loved ones to send messages to each other.* The Lovebox serves as a source of happiness and connection for users.* Users can also subscribe to receive daily content that improves their lives and promotes positivity.* Lovebox has sold over a quarter of a million units and generated $25 million in revenue.* Jean's superpower is resilience, which he developed through his personal experiences and deep connection to his work.* Resilience is essential for entrepreneurs, especially when facing challenges in funding and other aspects of running a business.* Jean advises others to be deeply connected to their work and to have something else in their lives outside of their projects.* Surrounding yourself with people who believe in your mission and support your goals is crucial for maintaining resilience.* To learn more about Lovebox and to support its mission, visit its website and its Wefunder campaign. How to Develop Resilience As a SuperpowerJean explains how building the company required resilience:We had a few times during the course of the company where we were struggling with money and raising capital. At the beginning of the company, I thought that we would raise money with VCs and get to $2 million in the bank and then develop the product and then sell the product. The truth is that I quickly failed at raising these two million to develop the product. There could be a lot of entrepreneurs who start trying to raise money for a project, and then they fail at raising the money. They just cancel the project and move on to a new project. Instead of that, I just decided to raise money with the community and find customers first and then get some investors coming. Every time a door shuts, or every time something fails, you just say, “Okay, well, let's find a way to go around it.” Having demonstrated his resilience, Jean offers some tips for developing this ability.First, he suggests, you need a deep connection to what you do. If you don't feel that, look for something new to do. That connection is required to be genuinely resilient.Next, he says, you need balance. You have to have something in your life outside work. He learned that when he focused too much on the business, he quickly became less resilient to the stresses the business creates. You have to be happy to be resilient. Finally, he says, it's best to surround yourself with people who share your sense of purpose and connection to the work. You can increase your resilience by following Jean's example and advice. By focusing on it over time, you may be able to make this a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Guest-Provided ProfileJean Gregoire (he/him):Founder & CEO, LoveboxAbout Lovebox: We're on a mission to spread happiness. You'll learn not just how to make investments via crowdfunding but how to make money doing it.Many impact crowdfunding investors focus on impact first. I admire the approach but note that a goal for maximizing impact is best accomplished by making money. It works two ways. A company that goes out of business has no impact after it dies. One that grows profitably can do unlimited amounts of good. LDLDN is DJ, producer - and most importantly - obsessed with music. A host on NTS Radio since 2012, his shows hop between jazz fusion, Detroit techno and anything else that generates a feeling. His SpaceBass parties and DJ sets at the likes of Erol Alkan's ‘To The Rhythm' at XOYO, I Love Acid at Corsica Studios, We Out Here Festival, Lovebox, Tate Modern and Secretsundaze swing easily between dancefloor steppers and more thoughtful, deeper grooves. Movement is key, genres and BPMs - not so much. Founding Natural Frequency Records has allowed LDLDN to bring all that together - releases that are musically diverse and tap into years of experience raving, collecting and dreaming about music. Tracks that aim to capture an emotion or idea in a genuine and interesting way. "My tastes cover so many different styles, tempos and vibes, it's often tricky to choose a particular direction for a mix. But after seeing some of the chaos at a recent Slothboogie party I thought I'd go straight in with some front-foot, late-night house, techno and acid selections to get you moving. A sprinkling of new and old - including stuff on my Natural Frequency label - recorded in one take to capture the energy. Really enjoyed putting this together and hope you do to"
Since the pandemic hit, no part of the music scene has been dissected so minutely by people with less direct knowledge than the club and festival circuit. That was inevitable - everyone loves to party and far too many take an unhealthy pleasure in the misfortune of others. Thankfully on this week's show we have some actual expertise to draw upon. Rich McGinnis has an inordinate amount of experience of the area in question, going back to the early days of the rave scene in Northern Ireland, working at https://www.amnesia.es/inicio/en (Amnesia) in Ibiza, to being one of the key players in the seminal North-West parties http://chibuku.com/ (Chibuku Shake Shake), https://www.circusclub.co.uk/ (Circus), and The https://www.thewarehouseproject.com/ (Warehouse Project). He's also found time to play a key role in festivals including https://parklife.uk.com/ (Parklife) and https://loveboxfestival.com/ (Lovebox). We talk about all of the above, plus the perils of chaperoning the denizens of Big Beat, why it's not always wise to build a DJ their own special booth for one gig, how ecstasy can change international politics, and much else besides. Rich is a raconteur with stories to tell and you will enjoy this episode! # Assumer le Made in China.
FOUK (@justsayfouk) is our new guest. Fouk is the project of Dutch producers Daniël Leseman & Hans Peeman (Junktion) For Daniel Leseman & Junktion (Hans Peeman), successful producers on their own merits and friends since childhood, a collaboration was inevitable. Their house sound infused with disco and a lot of funk has been proven to be very infectious. After the infamous Dam Swindle signed them to their Heist imprint and released the booming Kill Frenzy EP their name was established firmly to a broad and quickly growing audience. The result was requests for DJ sets across Europe, the America's & Australia with personal highlights including Glastonbury, LoveBox, Concrete Paris, Output New York, Club Space Miami, Claire and De Marktkantine in Amsterdam. Their first vinyl release as Fouk, on their own Outplay Records was met with great enthusiasm, the brilliant reactions to ‘Stuff Your Dad Liked' and ‘Cat Lady' propelled Fouk and Outplay firmly into the scene as the ‘one to watch'. Since then they've released EP's on Room With A View, The House of Disco and Razor-n-Tape and made a string of strong remixes for the likes of Kraak & Smaak, Smoove & Turrell, Groove Armada, The Brand New Heavies, Luke Million, Joey Negro and Mayer Hawthorne. After releasing ‘Release The Kraken EP' featuring Thumpasaurus on The House of Disco, ‘Truffles EP' on Heist Recordings in 2019 and two EP's on their own Outplay offshoot '24 Carrot' they return again on Heist in 2021 with ‘Blue Steel EP'. Continuing to build on the sound they have evolved throughout the years with a new impulse of creativity. Artwork by: maryaudio.art www.instagram.com/maryaudio.art/

This week I had a chat with the amazing poet, writer and performer Sophia Thakur. We chatted about the art and craft of poetry, Sophia's inspiring story and the black lives matter movement. Sophia Thakur is one of the most recognisable figures in UK performance poetry today. With over 14 000 youtube followers and a rapidly growing Instagram and Social Media presence Sophia has been described as “our generations first poetry influencer”. She combines honest and provocative lyrics, highlighting the tendencies of many hearts with contemporary music, creating something truly moving and unlike anything in the current music or poetry scene. She has collaborated with the likes of MTV, NIKE, TEDx, BET and performed her work at some of the UK's biggest music festivals and venues (Glastonbury, Lovebox, Roundhouse, Tate Britain and many more.) In 2018 she signed a major book deal with Walker Books who have released her first poetry collection SOMEBODY GIVE THIS HEART A PEN in October 2019 across Europe and Australia, and across the United States in January 2020. Olly Bengough started his first business in his twenties when he opened a bar on the King’s Road in Chelsea. From there he went on to set up venues which have become London institutions, including Infernos in Clapham and Koko in Camden. Along the way he started up the music festival Lovebox with members of Groove Armada. But it was Olly’s love of foreign and independent film that led him to set up the foreign film and lifestyle TV channel Cinemoi having no experience of operating a TV channel. Olly’s entrpreneurs story is an adrenalin-filled journey. He shares all the chaos, the hard work, the chance meetings with Martin Scorsese (no less) and his practical advice for anyone wanting to start their own business. And that advice applies equally to anyone looking to take a risk in their career more generally.

Lovebox was moved to gunnersbury and not wireless my apologies loud J will have is research up to date next time! we begin the talk with intro to a prince with us on the show, done very well to not make noise, children are beautiful never forget that. we start with festivals, which ones what they're about then and now and experiences as well as how they're portrayed when not popular or to gain popularity. we get into big narstie show and a little critique and analysis but no shade we don't try to pull another black person down for trying. Then we move on to Adoption which is a massive subject and seems like we only touch the surface and we were a king down with Ro D being away but responses from our audience will allow us to revisit the subject again as it is interesting to us and many perceptions of how it should work. bless up for this episode and catch the next one thank you for listening. contact us on: i.g- kingz_and_queen_pod tweet- kingznqueen mail- kingznqueen@yahoo.com please any donations and for support please visit our go fund me to help us continue our journey to talk about stuff that makes sense. gofundme.com/equipment-and-promotion
Sam and Mark discuss underdogs. The boys also launch a new feature "Restival" where they bring a festival to wherever you are listening from! This week it was "LoveBox"
Toren, Sillah and Ray discuss their experiences of music festivals and whether any festivals cater for everyone. Are festivals beginning to lose their integrity to appeal to the masses? Do people attend festivals to genuinely enjoy their favourite artists live, or to go take pictures and say that they went? Tottenham is also beginning to undergo a heavy gentrification process so the lads exchange words on if the negatives do outweigh the positives and why gentrification could possible benefit to the community. The episode finishes off with a discussion on the youth football system in the U.K., analysing it in comparison to the U.S. system.Use the hashtag #ColdDrinksPodcast to interact with us!https://twitter.com/colddrinkspodhttps://www.instagram.com/colddrinkspodcast/https://www.youtube.com/c/ColdDrinksConversationsPodcast

Bonjourno! This week we've got Sam Pepper with some dirty electro beats! Right click here and select save as to download the file At 23 hailing from south London Sam Pepper is a hyperactive dj that has an excitable passion for music often missed by certain chin strokey types. Playing an energetic mix of jump up electro, disco grooves and heavy basslines he is rapidly becoming one of the hottest up and coming djs on the club circuit. His passion for performing started out at the age of 17 throwing college parties in dodgy bars on borrowed sound systems, since then the venues have changed but the energy is the same, when Sam Pepper is on, the house party vibes come through the decks as loud and clear as the latest heavy-duty club track. Having already played out big festival sets at Snowbombing, Bestival, Get loaded, and Lovebox and supported artists such as Pendulum, Filthy dukes, Jaymo, Deepgroove, Alex metric and Grum, Sam Pepper has recently won a place supporting Radio 1’s Kissy Sell Out on his Kissy and Ko UK Tour. With an increasingly busy schedule at some of the coolest clubs in the country and a new exploration in to production Sam Pepper is definitely a name to keep an eye out for in the near future!
