When live performance shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, actors Sam Crane and Mark Oosterveen weren't sure when—or if—they'd ever be onstage again. So, they turned to an unexpected venue: Grand Theft Auto Online, a sprawling, open-world video game best known for fast cars, chaotic and often criminal missions, and player-driven mayhem. Amid the game's unpredictable violence, they decided to stage Hamlet—it would be the first ever complete performance of a Shakespeare play within a video game. Filmmaker Pinny Grylls joined them and turned the experiment into a documentary: Grand Theft Hamlet. Shot entirely within the game, the film won the Grand Jury Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival. “A startling example of using any tools at your disposal to make memorable art,” said the Rotten Tomatoes website. “Grand Theft Hamlet's experimental approach does justice by the Bard.” In this episode, Crane and Grylls talk about performance, friendship, and grief during lockdown, as well as how one of Shakespeare's most famous plays unexpectedly resonated with a virtual cast of strangers and a world in isolation. The result is both funny and poignant, and as surprising as live theater itself. From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast. Published July 1, 2025. © Folger Shakespeare Library. All rights reserved. Military expert Col. Dave Grossman discusses not only African and Middle Eastern child soldiers but also the experience of youthful draftees in Viet Nam. Along the way, we cover Ukraine's fighters, PTSD, video games, female child soldiers, sleep deprivation, chaplains, and how Grossman supports his own deployed grandson. Alert: some troubling content. 2d alert: we're not saying that the U.S. draft system in 1974 is comparable to the kidnapping and conscription of 13-year-olds in Kenyan militias. Hear us out. Dave GrossmanTranslation of clip 1:“So this particular day, we were all dressing up to go to the market. Then we realized the rebels wereall over our compound. They caught up with me and brought me home. My mother had just delivered a baby. They told her they wanted one million shillings or else they would kill me. So they brought 2 big bundles of sticks and they began beating me. They beat me until I was unconscious. They said that I would become a good soldier now that they had taken the civilian spirit away from me.”Translation of second clip not in English:“For 4 years, we did whatever they told us to do just to keep them satisfied. And to try to make them trust us so they would not kill us and we could escape from captivity. But in our hearts, nothings was changing. They would teach us that the people we loved were Kafir (infidels). And that we should fight them. Outwardly we were acting like them. Inside, though, we were still holding on to our religion. But they knew that we hadn't converted to their religion, so they put us in prison. They told us, ‘You are still Yezidis.'” And they hit us with sticks. It was difficult. I begged them, ‘Show mercy. I am young; I cannot handle this beating.' But they continued to beat me.'…--When you were released from captivity and got back home, why did you get the tattoo of your mother on your arm?I love my mother a lot and I want her image to be with me always. ISIS took her away from me and separated us.--You were so young, you were 13 or 14 years old. I want her to always be with me. That's why I got this tattoo.”
Sarah went to Vail Pride and is getting very emotional about her LGBTQ journey, the self-doubt she's grappled with, and her goal of self-acceptance. We explore why we're often hardest on ourselves and more accepting of others. Sarah talks about a study on rule followers, and we speculate about why people follow rules even when no one would know if they broke it. We discuss why procrastination can be about avoiding feelings that make us uncomfortable rather than the task itself. Sarah's plant stealing lifestyle continues, and she is having guilt about some *leaves* she picked up off the ground. To paraphrase Shakespeare, “It is a tale told by three idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” “So shall you hear of carnal, bloody, and unnatural acts, of accidental judgments, casual slaughters, of deaths put on by cunning and forced cause. And, in this upshot, purposes mistook, fallen on the inventors' heads.” It's Grand Theft Hamlet, the COVID-initated, machinima documentary written and directed by Sam Crane and Pilly Grylls. The music industry isn't exactly the most moral or law-abiding place, either…if you know where to look, you'll find crime all over the place. We've tackled this topic before…episode 4 of this podcast dealt with the mysterious disappearance of $200,000 of Led Zeppelin's money from a hotel safety deposit box…there was the time when Joe Strummer and Topper Headon from the clash were jailed for stealing some pillowcases from a holiday inn…and another episode featured the epically violent theft of two of Lady Gaga's dogs… We're going to build on those stories with more tales of people in the music industry who took things they had no business taking… I'm Alan Cross and this is episode 41 of “Uncharted: Crime and Mayhem in the Music Industry”…and this time, it's some wild stories of robbery and theft. After building major hype with a cinematic trailer, Rockstar Games has pushed the release date back to May 2026, sending shockwaves through the gaming community. The crew chats about why GTA6 is such a big deal, how long it’s been since the last version, and what makes this franchise so iconic.
