If you need to hire one person, hire a team of people, or transform your business through Talent or Technical Services, Insight Global's team of 30,000 people around the world has the hustle and grit to deliver. My guest: Nicholas Thompson is the CEO of The Atlantic and former editor-in-chief of WIRED. He's the author of the best-selling book (and one of my favorites of the year), The Running Ground. Nick shares why great leaders must balance being decisive with staying open to being wrong, how to build teams that challenge your thinking without creating chaos, and why the most important skill for the next decade is knowing what questions only humans can answer. Key Learnings Consistency Over Intensity Creates Results - If you go out there every day, six or seven days a week, and a couple days you push yourself really hard, you get faster. There's no two ways about it. If you don't do that, you don't get faster. It's a very good reminder that you can get a lot done if you just go and allot time to pushing yourself. Recommendation letter written by the Stanford faculty about Nick's dad to be a Rhodes Scholar: "Scotty Thompson is the kind of young man that comes along only once in approximately ten years. I cannot recall ever having known a student who possessed the same combination of intelligence, creativity, energy, drive, and dedication. He has attempted more, achieved more, than anyone we have studied– including some who now hold high office. He is generally conceded among those who have observed the student body since World War II to be the outstanding leader of the era. I think it likely that in the entire history of Stanford campus life, he has had no near rival since Herbert Hoover as an undergraduate." Also about Nick's Dad: Tracy Bennett, one of his graduate students, said, "He was flamboyant, gently endearing, annoyingly arrogant, piercingly intelligent, entertaining, and more. I'd never met a man, nor had a professor, who was clearly so brilliant and at the same time so precariously insecure." His grandfather, Frank Thompson, placed second in the Southern California extemporaneous speaking contest held at Whittier College. First place was Richard Nixon. Parenting — "Nothing makes me more worried about failure than parenting." "Parenting is suffused with regrets, confusion, and mistakes. But when I run by, I know my children are rooting for me to succeed with infinite love and enthusiasm." Running hard... Pushing yourself. Why do it? "Discipline builds discipline. Discipline is cumulative." Sometimes You Have to Trick Yourself - I ran 10:48 because the track was bigger than I thought, and I didn't realize how fast I was going. If I had known I was running at a 5:23 pace, I would've shut down. My body would've started to hurt. Sometimes you can't let yourself know what you're actually doing, or you'll get scared. Hiring at The Atlantic - The people he hires at The Atlantic share four must-have attributes: A spirit of generosity. A force of ideas. They're relentlessly hard workers. And they have an edge: an anxiety about getting great work done. That last one stuck with me. The best people aren't just talented... They're driven by a productive anxiety to do work that matters. Becoming CEO of The Atlantic: The Search & Selection: The Atlantic conducted a yearlong search after President Bob Cohn left in fall 2019. When owners Laurene Powell Jobs and David Bradley announced Thompsont in December 2020, they said "Nick is singular; we've seen no one like him" and that he brought "a surround-sound coverage of relevant experience." Move at an Uncomfortable Pace - You don't get anything you want by being comfortable. If you're working in a way that feels easy and setting deadlines where everything seems smooth, you're not growing, you're not learning, you're not getting there. That's a lesson from running, and it's a good lesson for work. Set Audacious Goals - We're setting two extremely big goals at The Atlantic. Our projections don't suggest we're going to hit them. But the same was true last time when I said we're gonna get profitable and a million subscribers in three years. We got there. Sometimes having a really big goal motivates you and forces all the tough choices. Continuous Forward Motion Matters Most - When I realized yesterday's marathon was going badly, I kept telling myself: continuous forward motion. Sometimes the goal becomes just finishing. It's better to make a full drop in pace and hold that than to slowly slide backwards every mile once you know you won't hit your goal. Every Extra Word Is an Opportunity to Lose People - Every extra word, every extra thought, every extra detail that doesn't propel the story needs to be removed. This book is 75,000 words, but there's 60,000 words I cut. Is this sentence absolutely essential? No? It's gone. That's storytelling, and that's leadership communication. The Cocktail Party Test for Storytelling - If you describe what you're writing at a cocktail party, do people come towards you or walk away? I can talk about my 2005 cancer diagnosis and 2007 marathon, and people lock in. I talk about my 2009 marathon, and no one cares. Test what has emotional resonance with your friends. Write and Speak To Help People SEE a Movie - When somebody's reading, they're visualizing it in their mind's eye. Can you see it? Can you feel it? If you can't run a movie in your head about what I'm writing, it shouldn't be on the page. Help them visualize it—the little white house in Concord, walking around Walden Pond. Hiring: Spirit of Generosity and Force of Ideas - Spirit of generosity means can they work with people? Will they be territorial or figure out what's best for the org? Force of ideas means are you smart and sharp? I also want edge—a little bit of productive paranoia. Not complacent, but kind to everybody. Discipline Can Show Up in Different Ways - My editor-in-chief hasn't run a mile in 25 years. Is he disciplined? Hell yeah. Works all the time, focused on every sentence. You can have mental discipline without physical discipline. I try to get the most out of different kinds of people with different strengths. Keep Going - This is the hardest time to graduate because of AI and uncertainty. Find things you're passionate about and really focus on them. My twenties weren't great professionally. I found journalism, but I wasn't good at it yet. Keep pushing, and eventually things turn out for the best. Reflection Questions What would happen if you moved at an uncomfortable pace in your most important work? Where are you setting deadlines that feel too easy and smooth? Are you ruthlessly cutting everything that doesn't propel your story forward? What sentence, meeting, or project exists simply because it always has, not because it's essential? Alphonzo "Phonz" Terrell, co-founder and CEO of Spill, is rewriting what it means to build community online. From his early days in music and media to leading social strategy at HBO and Twitter, Alphonzo's journey embodies the intersection of culture, entrepreneurship, and advocacy. After being laid off during Twitter's transition, he transformed a setback into an opportunity by launching Spill: a Black-owned social platform designed for safer, more rewarding, and more authentic online connections. In this episode of So Ambitious, Alphonzo opens up about the urgency of creating digital spaces rooted in trust, cultural fluency, and joy. He shares lessons from building at the highest levels of entertainment and tech, how Buddhism guides his leadership philosophy, and why dismantling gatekeeping is critical for future generations of Black entrepreneurs. This conversation explores risk, resilience, and redefining authenticity in the era of AI. If you're an entrepreneur, creator, or community builder who believes ambition is about more than vanity metrics, Alphonzo's story is proof of how vision and conviction can create movements with lasting impact. As he reminds us: “Entrepreneurship is really an act of faith. You're creating something from nothing.” KEY POINTS - How a “Great Day at Inkwell” photo became a cultural moment for Black ownership and legacy - Alphonzo's transition from music to media to tech - Lessons from HBO, Insecure, and Twitter on how conversations online reshape culture - Why marginalized communities drive internet trends yet face the most harm online - Founding Spill: designing platforms that prioritize joy, safety, and fair credit for creators - Redefining “builder” beyond technical vs. non-technical labels - Spill's vision: To have safer, more rewarding, and more human digital connections - The role of Buddhism in Alphonzo's leadership and resilience - Why gatekeeping harms Black entrepreneurs - The power of collaboration and equity crowdfunding - On raising millions in venture funding while centering culture and community impact QUOTABLES “One out of every two Black people has experienced hate speech online in the past year. It's a health crisis, not just a business problem.” – Alphonzo Terrell “Authenticity is just a proxy for trust, consistency, subject matter expertise, and honesty.” – Alphonzo Terrell “Gatekeeping comes from white supremacy telling us there's only one seat on the bus. We need to expand the pie into a garden where everyone eats.” – Alphonzo Terrell “If we've been blessed with platforms, what are we going to build to unleash the next generation?” – Alphonzo Terrell RESOURCES Alphonzo "Phonz" Terrell Website | www.spill.com Felecia Hatcher IG | @feleciahatcher Black Ambition IG | @blackambitionprize So Ambitious is produced by EPYC Media
Host: Mindy McCulley, MS Extension Specialist for Instructional Support, Family and Consumer Sciences, University of Kentucky Guest: Courtney Luecking, PhD Extension Specialist for Maternal and Child Health Season 8, Episode 20 Welcome to Talking FACS, where host Mindy McCulley is joined by Dr. Courtney Luecking, Extension Specialist for Food and Nutrition, to discuss how communities can respond when families face food insecurity. They cover what immediate support looks like — sharing information about local food banks and pantries, soup kitchens, school breakfast and lunch programs, Meals on Wheels and congregate meals for older adults, WIC, SNAP, and food recovery efforts like Glean Kentucky — and explain how eligibility, schedules, and program changes affect access. You keep attracting the same relationship patterns and don't know why. Psychotherapist Jessica Baum explains it's not your fault—your body remembers childhood dynamics through implicit memory and unconsciously recreates them in adulthood. Insecure attachment lives in your nervous system, not just your mind. Discover why healing happens through safe relationships (not isolation), how to develop "earned security" even if your childhood was chaotic, and why depending on healthy people is the counterintuitive path to inner safety. True healing is somatic, body-based, and possible at any age. Connect with Jessica Baum on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Also, here is the freebie link that Jessica mentioned in the episode. Welcome to the The Achievers Podcast. I'm your host, Amber Deibert, Performance Coach. I help enterprise sellers unlock their full potential by aligning their work with how they workout and cleaning up mindset trash, so they can sell more, stress less, and take back control of their time and success. You're on a call with a big exec. You're trying to sound confident. And then it hits that little voice that says, “They can see through me.” Your heart starts pounding. You talk too fast. You start filling the silence. It feels horrible. Here's the secret: everyone feels it. Even the top 1% of sellers, the ones winning awards and taking home million-dollar commissions, feel that same nervous energy. The difference? They know how to move through it. In this episode, I'll teach you how to quiet the spiral, drop out of your head, and show up from your best energy, calm, connected, and confident. Because confidence isn't about “knowing everything.” It's about caring more than you fear.

In this episode, I respond to a listener email from a man who caught his wife sneaking around with ‘just a friend.' Even when confronted, she flips it on him and calls him insecure. Why do cheaters deny and gaslight instead of owning up? I break it all down—and talk about what men need to do in this situation.Submit your own story to Dear DSO.Join the HFM Brotherhood today!
Today’s Bible Verse:"Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone." — Deuteronomy 34:7 Deuteronomy 34:7 highlights the remarkable close of Moses’ life. At 120 years old, his strength and vision remained, a testament not just to his physical endurance but to God’s sustaining power throughout his calling. This verse encourages us to consider how God can preserve us for the work He has prepared—right up until the finish line. “Want to listen without ads? Send us a textIn this episode, Mike and Doug weave between Mark Twain's obsession with wealth, the Beatles' messy breakup, and their own journeys as songwriters. Along the way they ask whether art is meant to sustain us financially, or if it belongs alongside chopping wood and carrying water. Doug shares a Nashville story that contrasts cover-band grind with the raw heart of songwriting, while Mike experiments with AI tools that reflect his music back to him — sparking questions about what machines can't capture: the soul. Together they explore insecurity, paradox, and the strange beauty of making art in the mess of real life
On today's episode: Dreams are not random noise. They are invitations to process the unreconciled data from your waking life. If you reconcile, you get to move forward. If you don't, you stay stuck, looping through the same unresolved problems again and again. Cracking your dreams as codes reveals truths about your story, your fears, and the permission you have withheld from yourself. I'll show you how I am using ChatGPT in a precise and powerful way to fast-track my dream interpretation and how that is dramatically accelerating my personal growth And personal work does not exist in a vacuum. This week Barack Obama said, “It is fair to say that 80% of the world's problems involve old men hanging on, who are afraid of death and insignificance and they won't let go.” He is right. Insecure wankers are leading the world into chaos. And while I cannot fix them, I can show you how to remove the insecurity in your own life so their madness has no resonance in you. That is the global “why” behind The Insecurity Project.I also talk about travel as teacher and what my European trip revealed about finding yourself in a wonderful game of hide and seek. And finally why The Unhindered Collective is the best room I have ever built for doing this work together.

This video brings us to part five of caring for our feelings of insecurity. We have previously learned that by utilizing our awareness, we gain the ability to care for our insecurity feelings. This is a powerful starting and life changing state of mind. Now let's use our new found skill of becoming aware of our emotions in the moment, and focus it on how your insecurity takes form in your life. Is your insecurity related to money? Is it related to your physical appearance, or maybe your sex life? Now notice the dialogue that goes on in your head. Is there a series of criticisms that go on? Maybe you say; what's wrong with me? Why am I so stupid? I can't believe I am not better at this stage of my life! Robert helps you see that rather than criticize yourself, you can turn your attention into action steps to actually benefit your life and care for your insecurities, turning the emotion into a beneficial ally in your life.
