Happy Wednesday, Scorekeepers! It's time for another jam-packed episode of your favorite podcast, THE SCORE! First up, we touch on one of the (many) recent scandals to hit Broadway, specifically all the hubbub around the new production of 1776 and what it brings up for us around being an artist from a marginalized identity in the workplace (0:11:39). Then we're joined by the thoroughly delightful Canadian soprano, Othalie Graham (0:41:22)! We have a fun, funny and poignant conversation about how her Jamaican heritage has helped shape her career, her unusual road to the opera stage, her advice to young singers, and what strategies opera companies might want to employ when it comes to some of the more problematic pieces in the canon. And then, of course, we'd never leave you without a bit of Pure Black Joy! One word: RIHANNA! (1:31:43) Let's do it to it, y'all! Andi Oliver is joined this week by musician and actor Jordan Stephens and he's brought a dish that's close to both of their hearts: ackee and saltfish with dumplings. It's a Jamaican national dish beloved in Britain by people from all parts of the African and Caribbean diaspora. During Jordan's childhood it was a crucial part of the Guyanese buffet at Stephens family sports days in North London parks. Neither ackee nor saltfish originated in the Caribbean, so how did they end up on a plate together there? Jordan and Andi explore the history of the dish and its connection to the transatlantic slave trade, as well as how food intersects with the complex experience of Black British Caribbean identity. And there's a cautionary scientific tale from Kimberley Wilson, on how surprisingly dangerous ackee can be if not handled correctly. Success Caribbean Style: Immigrants | Overcoming The Odds | Achieving Your Dream | Success Stories

Solomon, who is given the title of the wisest man who ever lived, is known for thousands of Proverbs on love, life, business and a host of other subject matters. Many cultures have used Proverbs to communicate lessons, which are passed on throughout the generations following. Unfortunately, some cultures are losing this unique form of communication for one reason or another. One of the reasons that is having such an impact is the immediate access to the global community. Fortunately, there are some people who have committed themselves to the preservation of these cultural identifiers. One such person is our guest on today's show. Her name is Lorlett Hudson who currently resides in the United Kingdom. In this episode you will hear her talk about a number of issues and how she has created a business using Proverbs her Grandmother taught her. What is a Proverb? According to Dictionary dot com, a proverb is "a short popular saying, usually of unknown and ancient origin, that expresses effectively some commonplace truth or useful thought." Here are some other important things to know about Lorlett's thoughts about her homeland, migration, lessons learned, culture, assimilation, hard work, taking action and one phrase that has remained with her: Q. What country are you representing? A. Jamaica Q. Why should someone visit Jamaica? A. - travel to the rural areas to be with the local people and get the true spirit of Jamaica Q. Whats a must do, see or have while in Jamaica? A. - get a taste of the food types but get an older person to cook your meal. Cornmeal pudding aka "Hell a top. Hell a bottom and Heaven in the middle." Q. What's your favorite dish you missed? A. - Fresh fish from the river and my Grandmother's cooking and also Ackee and Saltfish. Q. What one phrase that has remained with you from your homeland? A. - "when beggar beg from beggar him neva get rich" Translation: (look at who you are associating yourself with. Make sure you are choosing wisely) Q. What's your definition of Success? - being able to wake up each day feeling good about myself. - recognize I have something of value and can make a difference to someone each day Q. What are some obstacles you experienced in your journey? - having a child at a young age Take aways: - Zig Ziglar:You can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want. - you will only get results through people - know what it is like to be of service - one hand can't clap: it is impossible for anyone in life to do anything great all by themselves - teach people to value what is really theirs; what they have - leadership is in a crisis and is requiring a different approach on how business is conducted - focus on what comes naturally to you that you don't even have to think about and generate an income from that Greatest Accomplishment: - Degrees in communication - created my business using Jamaican Proverbs taught by my Grandmother - Flashcards in a box sharing Jamaican Proverb in the cultural dialect with the translation on other side Lessons Learned: Valuing what is really yours Find out what is it about your culture that makes you unique and embrace it Use your culture to your advantage Understanding who you are, remembering your family name and from where you came Tweet: "focus on what comes naturally to you that you don't even have to think about and generate an income from that" Lorlett's Bio: Lorlett Hudson, commonly known as the ''What Next'' Coach, a multi award winning Inventor, an entrepreneur, seminar leader. motivational teacher, the founder of One Hand Cant Clap training company and the Inventor of the critically acclaimed Things Mama Used To Say Jamaican Proverbs Flash Cards. Remember #frankoceanwatch? Well Gena didn’t just see Frank Ocean, but she spoke to him and told him to have a great time in Paris. In this episode, we talk all things TV and diversity, both homeside and stateside. With shows like Luke Cage, Atlanta and Ackee and Saltfish arriving on the scene, we discuss whether the golden age of diverse TV has returned and why it matters. We also pay homage to Trouble, Desmond’s, Goodness Gracious Me and Three Non-Blondes and their role in opening the British spectrum of comedy to including people of colour in not only consuming comedy but creating laughs too. Two weeks ago, I met up Cecile Emeke, Michelle Tiwo and Vanessa Babirye to talk about the online series 'Strolling' and a new independent film 'Ackee and Saltfish'. We talked about white supremacy being masqueraded as racism, and black men being the most sexist type of guy due to deeply ingrained patriarchy and misogyny being expected of them as well as ways you can support the continuation of independent film. Have the Yardie Skeptics gone completely mad? Why do they want to take their heathen wagon and steamroll the Christian connection with Jamaica's national symbols? The national anthem, a prayer from start to finish, and the national pledge, said "before God", both demonstrate how Christianity has co-opted Jamaica's national symbols, and the Yardie Skeptics have those symbols in their sights!  Is it time to consider national symbols which truly reflect the faith diversity in Jamaica? Or are there more pressing areas for secularization before turning attention to songs and pledges? Join the Yardie Skeptics this Sunday, August 24th at 12:30pm EDT (11:30am Jamaica time) as we dissect the issues at stake. Joining us live in studio will be Dr. Anna Perkins, Catholic theologian.  At the start of the show, during the grab bag segment, we talk to Renee-Lauren Ellis and Lisa Soares, organizers of the recently concluded Caribbean Youth Summit in Philadelphia to get a report on the issues being tackled by Caribbean youth as it relates to identity, gender, and sexuality among other concerns.  To listen to this episode live, or catch the uploaded version afterwards, simply click the link below.
