Barbra Streisand has been a huge presence in American entertainment—music, film, and stage—for more than sixty years. She was the youngest person ever to achieve the EGOT, winning Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards by the age of twenty-seven. At eighty-three years old, Streisand is releasing a new album, “The Secret of Life: Partners, Volume 2.” It's a collection of duets featuring Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, and Seal, along with younger artists including Hozier, Sam Smith, and Ariana Grande. Streisand sat down with David Remnick to talk about the record and the history behind it. Bob Dylan, for one, apparently had a crush on the singer from afar. “We were both nineteen years old in Greenwich Village, never met each other,” Streisand says. “I remember him sending me flowers and writing me a card in different color pencils, like a child's writing, you know. And ‘Would you sing with me?' And I thought, What would I sing with him?” Streisand talks with Remnick about her complicated childhood with her mother, who was jealous of her talent; her dislike of live performance; and the classy way to rebuff a come-on from Marlon Brando.

There are performers that impact your life without you even knowing it and today's guest fits that bill. On the show, we have comedic genius, multi-award-winning actor, writer, producer, director, and television host, Billy Crystal. We've seen Billy's versatile work across all areas in the entertainment world, stand-up, improv, Broadway, behind and in front of the camera, feature films, television, live stages like SNL, and animated movies. It's fascinating how much the man has done over the span of his career---and his lengthy IMDB page is only the tip of the iceberg.Billy's career took off for his role in the 70's sitcom SOAP, where he played a gay character, Jodie Dallas. This launched him into box office hits such as When Harry Met Sally, City Slickers, Analyze This, and the kids' favorite, Mike Wazowski in Monsters, Inc. just to name a few. Aside from hosting the Oscars® a record nine times and being only one step away from an EGOT, he's a philanthropist. Billy, along with Whoopi Goldberg and the late Robin Williams created the annual fundraiser stand-up comedy show, Comic Relief, in 1986 that has over the years, raised over $60 million to support the homeless. The late 80s and early 90s were a really magical time for Billy's career. He had the box office hits Running Scared and Throw Momma from the Train. He had scene-stealing parts in the classics This is Spinal Tap and The Princess Bride. There's the 1989 box office smash hit When Harry Met Sally, starring Billy alongside Meg Ryan and Carrie Fisher. The story follows Harry and Sally who had known each other for years, and are very good friends, but they fear sex would ruin the friendship. You can't talk about Billy Crystal classics without mentioning City Slickers for which he won a Golden Globes award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical/Comedy. On the verge of turning 40, an unhappy Manhattan yuppie is roped into joining his two friends on a cattle drive in the southwest.Billy's interest in entertainment started way before college. But his decision to go to NYU put some goals into place for him. He was a member of an improv/comedy group in college and soon he started to host solo standup shows. By 1978, he landed his first starring feature film role in Rabbit Test in which he starred with Joan Rivers. Towards the end of the 90s, Billy joined iconic Robert De Niro and Lisa Kudrow in the box blockbuster hit Analyze This and its sequel to Analyze That.Billy's work transcends generations and Gen Z is his newest fandom; distinctively for his role in Monster Inc. and Monsters University, Mike Wazowski. Monsters University revisits the relationship between Mike Wazowski and James P. "Sully" Sullivan during their days at Monsters University when they weren't necessarily the best of friends.Billy will reprise his role as Mike Wazowski in the Monsters at Work Disney+ series that is set for release later this year. One defining element of Billy's work, be it writing, acting, or directing is that he pulls from real-life experiences and balances funny and hard conversations effortlessly. Having started out in the business since he was 20 years old, it is absolutely thrilling to watch how he's knitted together diverse platforms and filed into an accomplished career. This Friday, May 7th, Billy's newest film, in which he wrote and directed, Here Today, stars himself and the incredibly funny, Tiffany Haddish, will be released only in theaters. These two make a seamless pairing and their chemistry is oh so charming. The intergenerational teaming of Billy and Tiffany tells a love story that is of friendship, support, and empathy. I absolutely LOVED the film. Do yourself a favor and go out and catch this gem of a film. When veteran comedy writer Charlie Burnz meets New York street singer Emma Payge, they form an unlikely yet hilarious and touching friendship that kicks the generation gap aside and redefines the meaning of love and trust.Billy has always been there to make me laugh, in good times and bad. I can not tell you what an honor and thrill it was getting to sit down and speak to a filmmaker, writer, and actor that has meant so much to me in my life.Enjoy my entertaining conversation with Billy Crystal.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/next-level-soul-podcast-with-alex-ferrari--4858435/support.

Whoopi Goldberg has had a life. And then some. Long before she became a Hollywood icon (and the first Black woman to achieve EGOT status), she struggles with substance abuse, trouble at school, and teenage pregnancy. And then she becomes a mom at just 17. But her unique comedy voice captures the attention of legendary writer/director Mike Nichols who sees something special in her. He brings her to Broadway, where she becomes the toast of the town, and the trajectory of her life is completely altered. A former baseball standout from one of Texas' top-ranked high schools, Britton made a bold pivot from the field to the stage in 2022. After an accomplished athletic career filled with championship victories and junior college play, he chose to follow his musical calling instead of pursuing sports scholarships. Music has always been in his blood. His father was a gospel singer before founding a church with Britton's mother, where Britton continues to develop his voice through worship as well as writing his own music. Though transitioning from teammate to solo artist has been an adjustment, he sees "The Voice" as the perfect opportunity to combine his love of mentorship and teamwork with his passion for music. Beyond music, Barry finds fulfillment as a substitute teacher in Chicago's south side, working with underserved high school students. Growing up with both White and Hispanic heritage, Lucia struggled to connect with her Mexican roots as she was raised away from that side of her family. Determined to embrace her lineage, she became fluent in Spanish while studying abroad in Spain. As a passionate music lover raised in Washington state, Lucia was particularly influenced by Brandi Carlile. A chance encounter in 2018, while Lucia was helping set up for Brandi's rehearsal at her high school, led to an impromptu singing session with one of the band members. Brandi overheard Lucia's talent and invited her to perform at a fundraiser concert. Today, Lucia performs regularly at local festivals and recently achieved a milestone by headlining her first show.ABOUT THE VOICEGet amped up! Ryan Wedding, a former Olympic snowboarder, has been added to the FBI's 10 Most Wanted Fugitives list. He's accused of running a drug trafficking network and orchestrating multiple murders. A $10 million reward is being offered for his capture. New evidence is being revealed in the case against Bryan Kohberger, the man accused of killing four University of Idaho students more than two years ago. The evidence includes a series of texts sent between the two surviving roommates who were inside the house at the time of the murders. New Mexico officials are expected to share new details on Friday into the investigation of the deaths of actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa. The couple's bodies were discovered in their Santa Fe home last month. At least 164 measles cases have been reported across nine states this year, with two unvaccinated patients — a child in Texas and an adult in New Mexico — dying from the virus. Health experts warn that measles can weaken the immune system, increasing the risk of future infections in a condition known as "immune amnesia." CBS News medical contributor Dr. Céline Gounder explains the long-term impact. New data shows layoffs increased last month to the highest level since the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, Friday's unemployment report revealed employers added 151,000 jobs in February, which is below economists' forecasts. MoneyWatch correspondent Kelly O'Grady reports. Ringo Starr made his Grand Ole Opry debut in Nashville last month, performing the country classic "Act Naturally," a song he and The Beatles first covered in the '60s. While best known for rock, Starr has always had a love for country music. In a new concert special airing Monday on CBS, he celebrates the genre at the historic Ryman Auditorium. Anthony Mason sits down with him to discuss the performance. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo's powerful duet "Defying Gravity" highlights the stunning visuals of the"Wicked" film, where costume designer Paul Tazewell reimagined Oz through more than 1,000 intricate designs. With a Tony for "Hamilton" and an Emmy for "The Wiz Live!," Tazewell is now closer to EGOT status after making history at the Academy Awards. Produceras av More Than Words

Is it strange that Wicked, a film about a marginalized person discovering her magic and rising up to fight against government oppression, has been a box office success under Trump 2.0 – or does the movie's message actually meet the moment? Wicked has been nominated for 10 Oscars, including Best Actress in a Leading Role for Cynthia Erivo, who already has Grammy, Emmy and Tony awards under her belt. This week, Kara talks with Erivo about why, as a queer, Black woman, the role of Elphaba was especially meaningful and how she made it her own; what she thinks about the current attack on diversity programs and the LGBTQ+ community; which projects she wants to lend her voice and other talents to going forward; and what becoming the youngest EGOT winner (if she wins the Oscar) would mean to her. Today's crossword was looking sharp -- and not just because ARMANI was in the grid (but it helped). We liked the daunting open-endedness of 48A, "_____ intended!", NOPUN; appreciated the BROW knitting induced by 24A, Move slightly, BUDGE; and just the opportunity to say 7D, Italian anise-flavored liqueur, SAMBUCA. A great debut crossword by Landon Horton, in our estimation it deserves to peg the JAMCR meter with a full 5 squares. Finally, we've got listener mail! Viola Davis' childhood was far from ideal. Struggling with poverty and racism, the “Fences” star's very humble beginnings were tough, but instilled a fire in her that propelled Viola to where she is today. And that is a pretty remarkable place. Not only is she regarded as one of her generation's greatest actors (hello, EGOT!), she's also become a role model for Black women everywhere. And for that, she deserves all the flowers. You can follow Brooke and Aricia on socials at @brookesiffrinn and @ariciaskidmorewilliamss.
