Whether it's a husky-voiced puppet master creeping on his unrequited love's daughter or a charming '60s romantic comedy that also happens to periodically feature a ghoulish yellow-face caricature of a Japanese man, we've all got faves that simultaneously have some deep-seated issues. Listen in with Leigh, Brendan, and Chris as we discuss some of our own, be they characters with their own gross issues or movies that have aspects which have aged like a fine milk. Also, our summer of Failed Franchises continues unabated with our next episode, a long-gestating adaptation of a middle schooler book that surely seemed like a safe bet at one point, and the accompanying drink that will make the whole ordeal go down (mildly) easier. Spring Break may have delayed this upload, but our discussion has remained relevant! We're just a few months into the new year and we have already heard so many chaotic stories. Let's talk about the truth tellers who some may see as heroes, and the villians they have exposed.
Intellectual expansion! Youthful passion! Exploited innocence! Genius writer, musician, and professional flame-throwing shit-starter Meredith Yayanos, comes on to talk about their problematic fave: Liberal Arts Education. This week, Taryn is joined by Ruth Etiesit Samuel to discuss how we deal when the artists we love do problematic things, and the effect that "stan culture" and "cancel culture" have changed our relationship with celebrities. But first, Taryn breaks down the news of the week, from the stories that make us say "I know that's right" to the ones that make us say "hell no".Follow Taryn: @_TARYNitUP Hosted on Acast. It's our 100th episode!!! (Cue fanfare) We couldn't have done it without all of you, our wonderful listeners! We have an extra special surprise for this ep, so listen to find out what it is! For this milestone episode, we read our hosts' problematic faves! And look no further than "Rescued by the Buccaneer (Pirates of the Jolie Rouge Book 1)" by Normandie Alleman and "A Fashionable Indulgence: A Society of Gentlemen Novel (Society of Gentlemen Series Book 1)" by KJ Charles. With their tens of episodes worth of experience, our hosts discuss outrageous French accents, the dangers of a flashy coat, and why it's better not to marry your cousin. We're all guilty of loving problematic faves. Is it still OK to read Harry Potter or watch Woody Allen movies? How do you reconcile your love for murky pop culture with the ethics of being a good person? In this special episode, Benjamin Law and Wenlei Ma confess to their problematic faves and attempt to determine whether it's still OK to declare their loyalty to them or if it's something to be disavowed. We also chat to Karyn Moynihan and Anna Carey about Double Love, a podcast which recaps and re-litigates the blockbuster 1980s teen publishing phenomenon, Sweet Valley High.
The three of us talk problematic faves, guilty pleasures, comfort food (literal and metaphorical), and the dangers of nostalgia. For this week's episode we're joined by the very talented folks behind 99 Potions, Fantbyte's dedicated RPG podcast that was unfairly cut short by the site's recent layoffs. When we put out the call for Problematic Faves, *multiple* listeners asked us to break down John Carpenter's 1980s cult fave. Can the history of American Chinatowns help us unpack the ongoing appeal of this dated flick? Why does this movie inspire so much DENIAL about how it traffics in the worst Yellow Peril stereotypes?
YA'LL. Sorry we've been a little ra-ta-ta-ta with our uploading schedules—we're going to do better—promise! This week it's just the gworls; Chlesea is getting into fancy skincare, Glynn misses the golden era of flash mobs (random), and Sade has a word for all ya'll who came for Will Smith but couldn't keep the same energy for the massacre in Buffalo. Inspired by the recent interview with Selling Sunset's Christine Quinn, in the group we explore the phenomena of the Reality TV Villain and run down some of our faves—because what would iconic TV moments be without them. ******* Make sure you're following your girls on IG @blackgirlstexting, and on Twitter @blackgirlstext1. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In this episode, Lita and Zee join Enthusiasm Girl to talk about what it means and how it's perceived in fandom when you write or read about villains or morally grey characters. Some fans are in it for the redemption, others for the whump, while others come to it purely for the wrongbad dynamics. But no matter where the impulse comes from, we dig into why there's nothing wrong with it, the implications of defining it as "problematic" or feeling the need to call ourselves trash for liking it, and why villains are just as important and necessary as heroes both in fandom and in the stories we love.
