Sharon Ross started Afrovivalist to provide communities of color in Oregon with vital outdoor survival skills based on what she learned from a childhood spent hunting and fishing in rural Southwest Oregon, lessons from her military father and a lifetime of watching people suffer during natural disasters due to lack of preparedness. Today she takes people through specially designed experiences to provide them with the tools they need to be better prepared whether recreating outside or facing a devastating winter storm.
Doomsday prepping seems more and more logical to us on the Life Raft team. Climate change-induced weather disasters are only getting worse, and it never hurts to be prepared, right? Today on the show we’re going to get a glimpse into the world of prepping through the eyes of Sharon Ross, who wanted to be prepared for anything, but later found herself the odd one out. This story comes to us from our friends at Wyoming Public Media. It’s from a terrific podcast called HumaNature, which tells stories about human experiences in nature. You can read more about Sharon Ross and her efforts here, and you can follow her on Twitter and Instagram. Support for WWNO’s Coastal Desk comes from the Greater New Orleans Foundation, the Walton Family Foundation, and listeners like you. In addition to our love of tiny houses, we love guests who make us question our reality and push our own understanding of our future. And this week, Sharon the self-described AfroVivalist fits that bill, and then some! Imagine a world where all electronic devices have been disabled by a disaster. ALL OF THEM. What would you do? Where would you go? How would you survive? Admittedly, this might not be a fun or entertaining thing to think about but living intentionally isn’t always just about focusing on what brings you happiness. Intentional living can also bring you peace of mind and security that takes the form of a disaster plan. Yes, we know you cannot fit 6 months of food in your tiny house. Or can you? If you’re inspired by badass women who push the boundaries of what “prepared” means, you’ll LOVE this week’s episode! http://www.afrovivalist.com/
If you haven't heard of this amazing woman ,you have NOW! Sharon Ross is the woman behind Afrovivalist, a prepping website. I met Sharon on a film project and when she said she was a prepare I got excited. I hadn't seen any minorities on the web that prepped so she was a UNICORN. I loved the videos on YouTube showing how to be prepared but meeting a woman of color prepping was unique. She is sweet and so giving and ready to teach anyone how to create a plan. She has a great website and is working on her videos and future workshops. It brings to mind HOW PREPARED ARE YOU? No matter what the calamity, without a plan your household will suffer greatly. I met with Sharon in her North Portland home in her study and we had champagne of course and then moved on to tea with freeze dried lemons, YUM!!!!!! We had fun throughout the interview and i shared the best of our time together. We chatted between Sharon cooking some of her stored yumminess and I hope you enjoy our time together and I look forward to sharing more.. So please subscribe, review and share.. oh yeah START PREPPING!!! lol Shawn
