Why is it, that within the black community, discussions surrounding mental health are often deemed taboo? This is a topic we've long grappled with and, in today's episode, we take this conversation head on. We unpack the poignant narrative in the film "A Snowy Day in Oakland" as it boldly magnifies the societal notions and stigmas revolving around mental health. The film opens a window into the belief that black people tend to conceal their troubles, a habit that can inadvertently stifles progress. Pondering the recent trend of celebrities unveiling their own traumas, we observe the ripple effects on ordinary individuals and the potential it holds in fostering vital mental health conversations. As we delve further, we broach the subject of the underrepresentation of mental health within the black community and the stigma linked with it - a poignant barrier, no doubt, in seeking help. We stress the importance of cultivating safe, judgement-free zones where such discussions can be held, driving home the point that transparency can be the catalyst for healing and restoration. We also confront the negative stereotypes associated with mental health professionals, underscoring why it's essential for therapists to undergo therapy themselves. Remember, your trauma does not define you. We are all on unique journeys towards healing, and if you have any questions or concerns, we welcome you to reach out. So, join us for this crucial conversation, because silence, after all, is not always golden. What is Trauma? Trauma is a deeply distressing or disturbing experience. An emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, rape, abuse, or natural disaster. I do not believe women should dim their light. I believe women should know how to use their light. We are in a time wherein the light of our men has been all but snuffed out totally. This is evidenced in the current state of the Black Community and our men specifically. The natural leadership, creativity, character and dependability of our men is not present. They are yet to show us and themselves their potential and many are frustrated. And we are frustrated. The scriptural representation of ‘kill the male, spare the female' is manifest today and without understanding the implications, we misunderstand the dynamics at play. But Sister, you do not need to dumb it down. Just understand their condition and act accordingly. Use your intelligence, your knowledge to be a help, not hinderance to our Brothers and our society. Do not dim your light, USE your light. But first, we must understand. A coalition of more than 40 corporate, civic and philanthropic organizations in Minnesota announced Tuesday that it's received pledges of nearly $1 billion to help build wealth in Black communities. The GroundBreak Coalition was formed after the murder of George Floyd to help close racial wealth gaps in Minnesota, by expanding opportunities for homeownership, entrepreneurship and commercial development. The pledges announced Tuesday come from 10 foundations and financial institutions. They represent “a significant step towards GroundBreak's goal of mobilizing $5.3 billion over the next decade to equitably expand wealth-building through an innovative approach shaped by community members,” the coalition announced in a news release.Organizers said each dollar of that money can unlock $3 in private-sector capital for “aspiring homeowners, entrepreneurs and commercial developers.” Financial tools and products from the initial money pledged are slated to be available to people in the region by the end of next year.Speaking to a large gathering on Tuesday morning in Minneapolis, McKnight Foundation President Tonya Allen said the goal is to “reimagine how dollars flow in our region.”“Fundamentally, it's helping people realize their aspirations. Now, that might seem like a really simple statement. But a lot of times, we all come to this talking about how we want to close people's gaps — as if people are deficits. Well, in actuality, the people we're talking about are assets, and they have aspirations. And if we can help them achieve that, then we are all better as a result of it,” she told the crowd.“When we change who the money flows to, with the focus on building wealth in the BIPOC communities, and starting with Black wealth-builders, we increase prosperity for everyone,” she said. The GroundBreak statement said its efforts would include a new mortgage product “that would allow financial institutions to offer the same or similar special bank loans with flexible underwriting. For homebuyers, this means a set of banks across the region would expand eligibility for loans by adopting less stringent methods of assessing risk such as high credit scores and personal wealth.”The coalition also aims to provide financial assistance to homebuyers, and to help homeowners cover emergency repairs. That money will be distributed through existing nonprofits, banks and community groups.Kevin Bennett is senior program officer for the Minneapolis-based GHR Foundation. He said Tuesday the pledges of more than $1 billion mean “that these resources will start flowing abundantly, reliably — and most importantly, permanently. So that aspiring homeowners, small business owners, developers can pursue the type of transformation that we want in our community.”Gov. Tim Walz called the effort “transformational.”“It's essential to our survival as a state, both morally and economically, that you're successful,” he told the crowd Tuesday.“If this does not happen, we will continue to deal with the issues that we've dealt with. We will continue to spin. We will continue to wring our hands and talk about our homeownership rates being some of the highest in the nation's — until we desegregate the data and they're not.”The 10 banks and foundations who pledged the $926.75 million announced Tuesday include Bremer Bank, Bush Foundation, GHR Foundation, Huntington Bank, M.A. Mortenson Companies Inc., Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies, McKnight Foundation, Pohlad Foundation, Securian Financial and U.S. Bank.

THE LEGEND JOINS THE CONVERSATION
The Get To Know Me Podcast, Season 6 Episode 2: Mental Health in the Black Community with Bizzy Balboa In this episode of The Get To Know Me Podcast, Bizzy Balboa discusses the topic of mental health in the black community. She talks about how mental health is often not taken seriously, and the stigma that surrounds it. She also shares her own experiences with mental illness and suicidal thoughts. She dives in on examples and explains how she wishes people would learn how to communicate with people who suffer from mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, and physical disabilities. This episode is a must-listen for anyone who wants to learn more about mental health in the black community, and how to support their loved ones who are struggling. Things Bizzy Balboa wishes people would learn about dealing with and communicating with people who suffer from mental illnesses: Be patient and understanding. Mental illness can be a very difficult thing to deal with, and it may take time for people to heal. Don't try to fix them. The best thing you can do is to be there for them and offer your support. Listen to them. Let them know that you are there for them and that you care about what they have to say. Don't judge them. Mental illness is not a choice, and people should not be ashamed of it. Encourage them to seek professional help. If someone is struggling with their mental health, it is important that they seek professional help. If you are struggling with your own mental health, please know that you are not alone. There are people who care about you and want to help. Please reach out to a friend, family member, or mental health professional for support. {Get To Know Me Podcast - Topics around music, community, history, finances, and more. Every Saturday! Dr. Wright also recounts his meeting with Malcolm X in the fall of 1961 and the profound impact it had on him. Finally, he discusses the evolution of his teaching career and his new book, "My Life in Segregation." Fellow sages, as you just read, you're in for a treat. And as we always say, as long as you guys show love, we'll stay consistent. Dr. Wright is a proud undergraduate alumnus of Howard University from 1960-64. He had the privilege of meeting and listening to Malcolm X in 1963, when he graced the campus as a participant in a debate in Cramton Auditorium. Dr. Wright returned to Howard as a professor/lecturer from 1967-1970 in the College of Liberal Arts (now Arts & Sciences), and subsequently as a full-time professor in the School of Communications from 1975-2023. He retired or rather transitioned from Howard in May 2023, after 50 years of devoted service as a professor at his beloved institution. Dr. Wright is currently working on a book project, an autoethnography, which narrates, analyzes, and recasts his life in segregation and beyond. Introduction to Dr. Richard Wright, finishing 50 years at Howard - 1:00 What made your lesson plan so unique? - 6:50 What does it mean to be Human? - 11:00 How the Renaissance reshaped the thinking of individuals - 15:50 “When you're told better you don't do better” - 22:00 “Nobody can insult you without your consent” - 29:20 Why Dr. Wright elected not to go into the Administration - 39:40 Dr. Wright on how the Black Community was more unified before the Civil Rights Movement - 44:15 “You knew that the world would challenge you, but your responsibility was to get ready” Dr. Wright on the collective mentality of the Black Community during segregation -53:00 The Concept of Freedom is a Double-Edged Sword - 56:30 The Power of Internationalizing the Black Struggle and American Hypocrisy, as shown by Malcolm and Martin - 1:08:55 Dr. Wright's experience watching Malcolm X speak in the Fall of 1961 and the power of his presence - 1:23:00 How has your teaching style evolved from 1975 up to your retirement in 2023 - 1:38:00 Closing/What's next for Dr. Wright? - 1:43:00 --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/blacklotuspodcast/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/blacklotuspodcast/support
The Archaeology of Race and Class at Timbuctoo: A Black Community in New Jersey (UP of Florida, 2023) is the first book to examine the historic Black community of Timbuctoo, New Jersey, which was founded in 1826 by formerly enslaved migrants from Maryland and served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. In collaboration with descendants and community members, Christopher Barton explores the intersectionality of life at Timbuctoo and the ways Black residents resisted the marginalizing structures of race and class. Despite some support from local Quaker abolitionists, the people of Timbuctoo endured strained relationships with neighboring white communities, clashes with slave catchers, and hostilities from the Ku Klux Klan. Through a multiscalar approach that ranges from landscape archaeology and settlement patterns to analysis of consumer artifacts, this book demonstrates how residents persevered to construct their own identities and navigate poverty. Barton incorporates oral histories from community elders that offer insights into the racial tensions of the early- to mid-twentieth century and convey the strong, lasting character of the community in the face of repression. Weaving together memories and inherited accounts, current archaeological investigations, historical records, and comparisons to nearby Black-established communities of the era, this book illuminates the everyday impacts of slavery and race relations in a part of the country that seemed to promise freedom and highlights the use of archaeology as a medium for social activism. Christopher P. Barton, associate professor of archaeology at Francis Marion University, is the editor of Trowels in the Trenches: Archaeology as Social Activism. Learn more about your ad choices. What's up Bougie Babes & Bro's? Okay, so now that you've heard our thoughts on the Jada & Will situation right after the slap, here's our thoughts TODAY after finding out that the Black Community's idolized wedded couple has actually been living their lives separated for years, even through the midst of the Red Table talk series, the August Alsina entanglement revelation, and the Chris Rock assault on live television. Were any of you guys surprised to hear the news? Is it genuine or just fodder to sell books? True, at one time, we looked up to the Smith's as "couple goals", but does that still ring true? We also discuss the Jeezy and Jeannie Mai split a little more in detail, and Miss E's definition of the strangest couple of modern times (Caresha and Diddy). Sip some tea on this one, while we give you some of our own!Your Bougie Bartender,~Kev
