April Koh is the youngest female founder to ever take a startup from just an idea to unicorn status. We are so excited that she's accomplished this in the mental health space, and we are excited for you to meet her and learn more about her Company, Spring Health! For those who may not be familiar, Spring Health is a provider of mental health benefits to employers for their employees, and their employees' families. Spring Health's product is a "precision mental healthcare" platform that matches a company's employees to the most effective care for each employee. These care solutions that employees are matched to include (but are not limited to) mindfulness and meditation applications, care navigation tools, access to coaching services, therapy, and medication management. To date, Spring Health has raised $300mm of capital and April and her team are truly pioneers in the mental health benefits space. Their recent funding round valued the company at $2 billion and April herself, is now the youngest female founder to lead a unicorn startup! She's truly amazing and I'm excited to share our conversation! You can connect with April on LinkedIn: April's LinkedIn Page Spring Health Website: https://www.springhealth.com/ What If Fellowship: https://whatif.vc/fellowship HERE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS WE TALKED ABOUT: April shares the founding story of Spring Health with us. She explains how she came up with the idea and tells the impressive story about how she put a minimum viable product (MVP) together in short order, impressed her soon to be co-founder to join her team, and brought a business to life at lighting speed. April is the youngest female founder to grow a startup to unicorn status, EVER! We talked with her about what this accomplishment means for her, for female founders and for the mental health space in general. April shares about her journey to realize there was a problem worth solving in this space, coming up with an idea, deciding to start a business and the path that she and the business took in the early days. April talks with us about what Spring Health looked like in those early days including how she recruited her co-founder, which is quite an interesting and inspiring story. We talked further about exactly what Spring Health is from a business point of view, how they win customers, what exactly they provide, and how they get paid. April shared her vision for the future of the business and more broadly, the future of the mental health care landscape. We always love to ask pioneers in the mental health space where they view the biggest opportunities in our space (of course, outside of what they are currently building) and April's answers there were certainly insightful for anyone looking to build a mental health startup. Finally, April provides advice and “lessons learned” that she wished she had known in the early days. I found her answers to be so helpful I believe every founder in this space could learn from April. Dave and Justin discuss My Little Pony: The New Generation, the #1 show on Netflix this week. Here's the official synopsis: Equestria's divided. But a bright-eyed hero believes Earth Ponies, Pegasi and Unicorns should be pals — and, hoof to heart, she's determined to prove it. Dave and Justin are amazed that a magical horsey cartoon took such a hard stance against neo-fascism and the military-industrial complex. Ashley comes to grips with her horse-riding past. Sophie wonders why all children's movies now have to have an “influencer” character. Also, one of the ponies turns into Muammar Gaddafi for some reason. Sophie's Synopsis: In this family friendly neoliberal allegory of racial segregation, Earth pony Sunny Starscout, an SJW with a savior complex, teams up with a bubbly unicorn, and a queer coded Pegasus princess and some other friends to defeat the fear-mongering corporation and clueless police force in order to solve racism and restore friendship and magic in equastria. Justin' Synopsis: You know that something has gone terribly wrong with the world when an animated children's movie about magical ponies decides focus on fascism as its main theme. There is literally a pony that turns into Muammar f*cking Gaddafi in the third act. Everyone needs to watch this movie so that we, as a society, can acknowledge and begin to combat the existential threat of the military-industrial complex and the sustained campaigns of disinformation that have permeated our socio-political institutions at the highest level! Friendship is magic and fuck the patriarchy! Ashley's Synopsis: My Little Pony teaches children how not to be a Karen. Dave's Synopsis: Do you think that classism, racism, and xenophobia are distinctly human qualities? Do you wish you could see a horse fling slime at other horses while roller blading and singing a jaunty show tune? Welcome to the redundantly named Maritime Bay where friendship, Love, rainbows, and kindness can co-exit with propaganda, fear-mongering, and hat mobs. Join Sunny Starscout as she fights fascism and a military industrial complex based largely on hitting people with slime, and succeeds s in teaching her community that love and friendship will help some horses regain magical powers while others, seemingly deserving horses are left powerless. Synopsis Let's face it. Brevity and wit are not always qualities one associates with new music. But today we offer a sample: this comic overture is less than 5 minutes long, and opens, as you just heard, with a Fellini-esque duet for piccolo and contrabassoon. The overture is entitled “Quantum Quirks of a Quick Quaint Quark,” and is a rather burlesque celebration of modern theoretical physics. Its alliterative title evokes those subatomic particles known as “quarks” that, we're told, make up our universe. And, since this music changes time signature so often, perhaps Heisenberg's “uncertainty principle” is thrown in for good measure. The music is by Marga Richter, who was born on this date in 1926 in Reedsburg, Wisconsin. Richter received her early music training in Minneapolis, and then moved to New York's Juilliard School. By the time of her death in 2020, she had composed over 75 works including an opera and two ballets, as well as two piano concertos and a variety of solo, chamber and symphonic works. "Composing,” said Richter,” is my response to a constant desire to transform my perceptions and emotions into music … Music is the way I speak to the silence of the universe." Today we hear the Combat Story of Tony Brooks, a former Army Ranger with 2nd Ranger Battalion who fought in Afghanistan early in the war and in Ramadi, Iraq. Tony's first mission was significant, being tasked with the recovery of downed chinook helicopter, Turbine 33 and The Lone Survivor, Marcus Luttrell in the mountains of Afghanistan. His book, Leave No Man Behind, is all about this experience as the primary search and rescue element that catalogues the mission from hitting the ground, recovering bodies, and hunting for every last man to bring them home. In this episode, we also touch on the impact of a legendary man, soldier, Ranger, and American - Pat Tillman - who had a tremendous influence on Tony (and myself for that matter). After the military, Tony went on to become a licensed chiropractor. He married the woman he refers to in the book as ‘the Unicorn' who he met as a private while stationed at Fort Lewis. “It's a global development.” On this episode of The Scoop, 10T Founder and CEO Dan Tapiero joined host Frank Chaparro to discuss his insights into the globalization of crypto markets and how his macro investing strategy has seen his fund 10T pour hundreds of millions into crypto unicorns. To date, Tapiero has already allocated the majority of some of his funds to companies such as Kraken, Deribit, and Ledger. “We have a portfolio of about 10 to 15 companies that are our targets." Tapiero mentioned how 10T has been helping investors adopt a macro crypto strategy, saying that he's rejected some 50 plus deals in favor of a more careful approach with a closer guarantee to 5-10x returns. In spite of bear swings, Tapiero remains bullish. "I don't think the valuations of things that we're looking at are high to begin with." Tapiero also observed an "asymmetry" that he credits to the market's resilience. He said he's noticed that as bitcoin upside drives valuations up, any market downsides simply cause bitcoin company valuations to remain relatively neutral. He had this to say: "I saw that you can have a productive portfolio of assets withstand an unbelievable bear market without even having a negative mark. And so in 2018, what brought me to this idea to some degree, was in '18 bitcoin was down 80 percent, Ethereum 95 percent, but a basket of companies that we looked at broadly maintained their value. So to me, that's like mind blowing. I can build a portfolio that has access to all of the upside, not just of Bitcoin and Ethereum, but the entire space without having to suffer, hopefully, much on the downside... For institutions, especially, this is a very attractive type of portfolio." ... About this episode My guest this week is Eli Harris, is the co-founder of R-Zero. R-Zero is disrupting an archaic industry (disinfection), and in doing so - creating a category around health security + biosafety technology. Eli and his co-founders recognized that the COVID pandemic was going to present a massive shift in health security, much like 9/11 did for physical security. The opportunity for Eli and the R-Zero team is enormous and we discuss this societal shift in great detail within this episode, but let me be clear…Eli's story is not one of success without failure. R-Zero is Eli's second startup and his first is now valued over $1 billion dollars. You read that correctly, his first startup reached the elusive “Unicorn” status. Unfortunately though, he does not get to share in that success because a little over two years ago he was pushed out and let go from the very company he built. Within this episode we unpack how he processed that moment to get to a place where was capable and emotionally ready to begin building what, from all external signs, looks to be another Unicorn startup story. In this episode, you'll hear: How Eli put in tremendous work to become fluent in Mandarin Chinese and how that work led to various opportunities in mainland China. The origin of his first startup, and how it reached a valuation of $1 billion. The events that led to him being pushed out from that startup. How he processed and leveraged that traumatic experience to strengthen him for the next chapter of his startup journey. Historical perspective of the security changes brought on my the events of 9/11, and how the COVID pandemic has created a similar opportunity. About the future growth opportunities for R-Zero and their recent acquisitions.. If you want to accelerate your recruitment agency growth, there are two key challenges you absolutely must solve. First, how to attract and recruit the right people. Secondly, how to develop your people into great billers. Consistently achieving both of these objectives will translate into better talent retention and faster business growth. Of course, that's easier said than done. How do you actually do it? In this episode, my special guest, Simon Kouttis, gives a masterclass on how to hire, train and develop recruitment consultants. He reveals how they are able to take trainee recruiters and get them billing £500,000 in six months! Simon is an Executive Director and Partner in SOAP, a London-based executive search firm on a mission to revolutionize the cybersecurity recruitment industry. Simon also is a co-host of his own podcast, called Hunters and Unicorns. Episode Outline and Highlights [1:55] How SOAP is revolutionizing recruitment and what their differentiating factor looks like. [6:45] Allowing strategic conversations to take place with internal talent acquisition teams of your clients. [12:16] Simon talks about the SOAP Sales Playbook. [20:33] How to come up with culture and values that are not just lip service. [30:00] How SOAP empowers their employees: practical approach on rewards and compensation. [34:22] The value of training and development and how it works at SOAP. [38:49] Learn about SOAP's call-listening activity and how it adds to their culture of learning. [42:17] SOAP's approach to internal recruitment - hiring based on attributes instead of experience. [47:22] Simon shares about his podcast, Hunters + Unicorns The SOAP Sales Playbook One of the differentiating factors for Simon's firm is their commitment to continuous learning and development. To help their staff to reach their full potential, they came up with the SOAP Sales Playbook. For Simon, it is one of the most transformational things that they have come up in the recruitment business. “We are seeing recruiters that could barely bill doing five hundred thousand in a half a year.” Simon shared that there are four playbooks on which the foundation is focused on how to influence the most high performing passive candidates in the market. If this idea appeals to you or if you are in the process of creating a developmental methodology for your organization, you will enjoy Simon's detailed explanation. Culture and Values - Not Just Lip Service Promoting culture and company values is critical for a growing business. For some recruitment companies, however, it can only be lip service. Culture may only be by default instead of by design. For Simon, from a values perspective, they spend three days when people join their business talking about values. Simon explains, “The reason for that is because everything we do as a business, every decision we ever make, comes from those values. Who we hire, who we fire, what process we are going to build, what strategies we are going to execute, everything comes with reference to those values.” In line with this, Simon shared how their values affect their internal hiring process. Investing Heavily in Training and Development As mentioned earlier, SOAP invests heavily in training and development of their employees. This is one of the key topics Simon and I discussed. I clearly remember when I started back in 1997, there was really no structured training plan in place. For successful recruitment business owners that I had the privilege of having as guests in this podcast, a common factor is how they value continuous learning for them and their team. SImon is no exception. This is how he puts it: “Learning and development is not something you do at the beginning. It is something that you do every single day every week.” You will hear Simon reveal their methodology and approach in development, as well as how it has positively impacted their growth as a company. What Would You Look for When Hiring Internally? Let's be honest, as ironic as it may sound, effective recruiters are not always as effective when hiring internally compared to hiring for their clients. This is indeed a known challenge to those who have been around for a long time in this industry. So I had to ask Simon, when hiring internally, what are they looking for? SOAP does not only bank on recruitment experience when looking for clients. He discussed different methodologies they apply as well as their hiring process. What do they look for potential candidates? Here are the takeaways: The desire to learn Coachability Character and Resilience Experience / tenure and performance based on previous role, not necessarily recruitment Our Sponsors This podcast is proudly sponsored by i-intro®. i-intro® is an end-to-end retained recruitment platform. With a decade of experience, Simon is now a Founding Executive Partner at SOAP where he leads the sales enablement function. He has developed industry-leading best practices that include the Trinity Search Methodology, the Candidate Spectrum of Motivations and is the author of the SOAP sales playbook built on MEDDIC. Simon straddles the technical and sales recruitment functions, in order to drive engagement on the largest and most complex global recruitment campaigns. Simon is passionate about recruitment strategy, which has led to a focus on working with talent acquisition in order to identify the bottlenecks that can suffocate the effectiveness of attracting the highest calibre individuals. Simon kindles his creative spark through his love of art and music. He is a golf addict, although his first love is Liverpool football club.
