Escalation with Iran raises alarms, but don't worry, Black women will save us... This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum ask: are we all gonna die??!? Seriously though, President Trump and the U.S.A. are likely to join Israel in their air attacks on Iran. What are the potential consequences of a direct war with Iran? Is this Iraq 2.0? Or something new, perhaps the beginning of WWIII?? Our hosts separate the facts from the nunsense. We’re also going to look at a brand new poll capturing the priorities and lived experiences of Black women voters all across the country. Our guests today, Gabrielle Wyatt and Cornell Belcher, help us sift through this new data that points to long term solutions for issues facing the Black community, and dispells some common misconceptions about Black voters. AND FAMU’s board of directors is making their final vote for president soon and it’s looking like MAGA Marva will get it. Did Elon Musk just revive the ‘stolen election’ conspiracy? Two of y'all sent in questions about a recent tweet of Elon Musk's where he says, "Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate... Such ingratitude." The tweet fanned the flames of a conspiracy theory claiming that Musk hacked the voting machines or influenced the election illicitly (beyond the hundreds of millions of dollars that he legally dumped into Trump's campaign). Hosts Angela Rye and Andrew Gillum take a peak at the Musk-election fraud conspiracy theory and chat about their views on conspiracy theories more broadly. This week hosts Angela Rye and Andrew Gillum discuss the ICE raids and unrest in Los Angeles with L.A. Mayor Karen Bass. Tiffany Cross is out sick this week. We have all seen the sensational images from the protests and unrest in L.A. following last Friday’s ICE raids. The ICE raids targeted immigrants at their workplaces, including Home Depot and a clothing store. Since then, the National Guard has been called up by President Trump to quell what he’s calling an “insurrection.” The use of that word, “insurrection,” is highly intentional, as is the effort by Trump and rightwing media to paint L.A. as a chaotic, lawless place. Trump is ratcheting up his mass deportation plans and Mayor Bass says that Los Angeles is the testing ground. The unrest in L.A. dovetails into an ongoing conversation we’ve been having with you, our audience. We’ll be joined by executive director of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI), Attorney Nana Gyamfi. BAJI advocates for the nearly 10 million Black immigrants, refugees, and families living in the U.S. As BAJI’s director, Nana will respond to some of YOUR comments critiquing our hosts’ support of migrant communities. Nana Gyamfi brings with her over three decades of service to the Movement for Black liberation, and over twenty years experience directing Black social justice organizations and networks. She is a human rights and criminal defense attorney, a professor in the Pan African Studies Department at the California State University Los Angeles, and a radio personality. Find out more about the Black Alliance for Just Immigration at https://baji.org/ and follow them on social media @instabaji and @bajitweet And of course we’ll hear from you! In this week's episode, I offer my unfiltered perspective on one of the nation’s most controversial stories. As an attorney, political strategist, and commentator, I’ve devoted my career to grassroots activism, public policy, and challenging conventional wisdom across the political spectrum. My work places me at the center of debates on law, order, and immigration, and today, I’m sharing my direct take on the events rocking California and the country at large. This episode digs into the recent clashes in California, where ICE agents and detention centers became the focal point for riots, forcing President Trump to deploy 700 Marines to Los Angeles alongside the National Guard. I tackle what this means in a sanctuary city, address the legal and moral intricacies of illegal immigration, and critique how local officials are dealing with the fallout. From the devastating impact on small businesses to the divided loyalties of politicians, I unpack why Trump’s hardline policies are no surprise to those who supported him and highlight the consequences of ignoring campaign promises. My commentary challenges the mainstream narrative and critiques elitist leadership, while examining the difficult choices our leaders face when addressing public safety, immigration, and community trust. “If you are here illegally and doing something illegal, like being in the country illegally, it's time to tell people who came in in the last four years, three years, two years, year, you're going to get kicked out.” Today on the Political Contessa: I discuss the deployment of 700 Marines to Los Angeles to address riots. I highlight how President Trump’s immigration enforcement policies remain at the center of national debate. Sanctuary city policies restrict what law enforcement can do during civil unrest. Illegal activities by recent immigrants are presented as justification for stricter immigration actions. Small businesses suffer most from property damage during riots. Local officials’ defiance of federal immigration law is escalating tensions with the President. Leaders earn voter support by keeping campaign promises on immigration. Elected officials need to prioritize their constituents’ interests over their own. Awaken Your Inner Political Contessa Thanks for tuning into this week’s episode of Political Contessa. Every month since October of 2022, Reverend Dr. Robert Turner has been walking from his home city of Baltimore to the White House, a journey he’s dubbed #40MilesFor40Acres. Whether rain, shine, alone, or with fellow advocates–Turner has been making the journey for nearly three years now. Angela Rye talks with him about his experiences and the success he’s had. PLUS, the Reverend Dr. recently added a stop on the march: the National Museum of African American History and Culture (The Blacksonian). The museum has come under attack from Trump for its “divisive, race-centered” exhibits that disparage the nation’s history. Imagine that! State of the People is coming to Baltimore on Juneteenth for The National Assembly. SOTP brings together organizers, cultural leaders, policy advocates, artists, and community members to co-create a vision for our future. Join us, it’s free and there will be food! This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum address a topic that’s been in the news a lot late: Trump’s “Big Beautiful” budget. Despite Elon Musk calling the budget a “disgusting abomination,” and Trump himself asking Republican legislators not to cut Medicaid, the GOP budget plan will extend tax cuts for the richest Americans while slashing the social safety net; if the bill passes in its current form, millions of Americans will lose health care, food stamps, and more. Many are calling it the largest upward transfer of wealth in American history. This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum address the most important topic to us here at NLP: you. We called for you to imagine a new system and we have watched and read your responses. There are words of encouragement there–and words of rebuke. We want all the smoke, and the love, let’s get into it! From non-voters to Karens, the conversation (spurred by you) comes back to this: even when they try to support us, white people are constantly centering themselves. Their values and their comfort are always at the forefront for THEM, and we see that reflected in government, in school, on TV, in PODCASTS; the list goes on. That’s great for Karen and the rest–but how do we advocate for the Black community without falling into the trap of centering them ourselves?? There’s news out of Tulsa this week on reparations for the descendents of the victims of the Tulsa Race Massacre. We welcome Attorney Demario Soloman-Simmons to break the exciting news to all of you! “Succession” creator Jesse Armstrong's latest work, a ripped-from-the-headlines sendup of tech billionaires called “Mountainhead,” is arguably an extension of his over-all project: making the ultra-wealthy look fallible, unglamorous, and often flat-out amoral. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz discuss how the new movie draws on the tech oligarchs we've come to know in real life, and consider the special place that the über-rich have held in the American imagination since the days of Edith Wharton and Upton Sinclair. How has the rise of such figures as Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg changed our conception? And, as they've become more present in our daily lives—and more cartoonishly powerful—is it even possible to satirize them? “I think now that job is more important and also harder to do for artists,” says Schwartz, “simply because the culture is so enraptured with wealth."Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Mountainhead” (2025)“Succession” (2018-23)“Oil!,” by Upton Sinclair“There Will Be Blood” (2007)“Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” (1984-95)“Three Faces of American Capitalism: Buffett, Musk, and Trump,” by John Cassidy (The New Yorker)“Joe Rogan, Hasan Piker, and the Art of the Hang” (The New Yorker)“On the Campaign Trail, Elon Musk Juggled Drugs and Family Drama,” by Kirsten Grind and Megan Twohey (The New York Times)New episodes drop every Thursday. In this week's episode, Jennifer welcomes Payton McNabb, a determined advocate for the elimination of biological males participating in women's sports and the protection and fairness of girls’ and women’s sports. Payton is a former three-sport high school athlete from rural North Carolina whose life changed abruptly, due to existing state policy at the time, after she suffered a traumatic brain injury during a volleyball game against a male player who spiked the volleyball onto Payton's head. Unable to continue athletic competition, Payton has since dedicated herself to speaking out for the protection of girls in sports, serving on the Stand for Women Advisory Board with the Independent Women’s Forum, and testifying across several states to inspire legislative changes. Jennifer and Payton delve deeply into the controversial and headline-making topic of transgender participation in girls’ sports, raising urgent questions about safety, fairness, and the impact of policy on real lives. Payton reveals the physical and emotional aftermath of her injury—concussion, brain bleed, permanent whiplash, and PTSD—and recalls the lack of empathy shown by the opposing team, school administrators, and even the player involved. The conversation exposes how the egregious legislation once prioritized inclusion transgendered women (biological males) at the direct expense of the safety of all female athletes, and how Payton’s testimony contributed to the law changing in North Carolina. Payton emphasizes that stories like hers, often dismissed as rare, affect not just individual players but entire communities and families. She courageously shares her vision for a future where girls can compete without fear, calling for truth, common sense, and genuine compassion in the ongoing debate over the future of women’s sports. “The protections of this one man overrode the protections of every girl and every parent.” ~Payton McNabb This week on Political Contessa: Payton McNabb’s journey from promising athlete to national advocate The sports injury that ended her volleyball career and changed her life Navigating the aftermath: medical diagnoses, PTSD, and the emotional toll North Carolina’s previous policies allowing biological males to compete in girls’ sports and how that changed How teams, communities, and families are impacted by “just one” such injury The lack of accountability and empathy from the schools and the athlete who caused her injury Why Payton feels called to share her truth and stand up for other girls Payton’s hope for a safer, fairer future for girls’ and women’s sports Connect with Payton McNabb and Resources Mentioned: Independent Women's Forum: https://www.iwf.org/ Awaken Your Inner Political Contessa Thanks for tuning into this week’s episode of Political Contessa. This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum define our democracy (what’s left of it). Nowadays it’s popular to say that the USA is a “democracy in decline.” But what does that actually mean when for many of us the system has been failing! Our hosts identify specific areas where our democracy has crumbled and begin to answer the question: exactly HOW and WHY has our democracy failed? This will be an ongoing conversation, and we’d love your input, send us a video! Speaking of ongoing conversations, we hear your pushback to this idea that we ought to stand in solidarity with migrants. In a video we received, one of y’all was also questioning the idea that there could ever be self-sufficient communities for Black and Brown folks. We’ll play that video so the hosts can respond to your criticism. We love being in conversation with y’all, even when we disagree! We invite you to think radically, consult your local communities, and imagine how our democracy can be salvaged–or completely reconstructed?? In this week’s episode, Jennifer welcomes Deirdre Sullivan, an emerging author and mother of four daughters based in the Boston area. Deirdre began her writing journey with a passion for storytelling that was sparked in high school and continued through the publication of three children’s books. As her children grew, so did her writing style, leading her to explore adult fiction and ultimately craft a debut murder mystery novel inspired by real-life events closely connected to her community. Deirdre is also a participant in Jack Grapes’ Los Angeles-based writing classes, which have helped her transform thousands of words of personal journaling into a fully developed manuscript form. Jennifer and Deirdre discuss the challenges and rewards of reinventing oneself after years spent raising a family, particularly for women returning to the workforce or creative pursuits. This episode delves into controversial topics, such as the Karen Read trial in Massachusetts—a case that significantly influenced Deirdre’s novel and has captivated local media and social media spheres. The conversation openly navigates the intimidation of sharing deeply personal creative work, the nuances of portraying real-life inspiration in fictional form, and the subtle power dynamics within upper-tier social circles. Listeners will appreciate insights into why embracing vulnerability, authentic storytelling, and active listening are essential in both the arts and everyday life. “It’s so easy for people to critique and sort of knock us down. So you do have to have some thick skin to be—to shut out that noise.” –~Deirdre Sullivan Today on Political Contessa: Reinvention is possible at any stage, especially for mothers considering new beginnings after raising children. Personal experiences and local headlines can serve as powerful inspiration for fiction writing. Authenticity in storytelling comes from writing for oneself rather than catering to outside expectations. Portraying community figures in fiction requires careful blending of character elements to avoid overly obvious real-life parallels. Crafting a novel is an intensely personal endeavor; sharing it publicly requires confidence and resilience in the face of criticism. Early morning solitude is a productive time for creative work, allowing for uninterrupted focus and concentration. “Cozy murder” is a unique subgenre that blends relatable settings and humor with the mystery of crime. Listening and observation in everyday life provide rich material for creative writing. Trump’s justice department has drastically scaled back its support for anti-crime initiatives. They’ve cut $500 million in grants from 200+ organizations focused on violence prevention. Angela Rye went LIVE to talk about the impact of these cuts on violence prevention in the Black community with two folks doing the work: Rev. Michael McBride (Pastor Mike) is the executive director for LIVE FREE USA, a national organizing and social change network committed to ending the criminalization of people of color, reducing gun violence and transforming the policing and the criminal justice system. This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum interview Atlanta’s former mayor–and now GA gubernatorial candidate–Keisha Lance Bottoms. And we’ll respond to some of your criticism… Last week we did an episode about migrant rights that some of y’all pushed back on in the comments. Some challenged the notion that we ought to stand alongside communities who, according to some, do not stand alongside the Black community. Moreover, we hear your criticism that y’all want to know what to do and not necessarily just a lecture. We’re here for this back-and-forth, let’s talk. Gubernatorial candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms tells us what she learned from Stacey Abrams near-miss in Georgia, offers a thought or two on the situation at FAMU, and opens up about her strategy to win rural voters. It’s not all about the ATL y’all! NLP will be joining the State of the People tour next Saturday 5/31 in Jackson Mississippi! In this week’s episode of Political Contessa, Jennifer welcomes Scotia Hille, Executive Director of Act on Mass. Scotia’s career began in climate policy, where she worked on national campaigns and later shifted her focus to improving government transparency in Massachusetts. With a background in science and policy, and a dedication to holding elected officials accountable, Scotia now leads advocacy efforts for legislative reform and open government, aiming to strengthen democracy in one of the nation’s least transparent state legislatures. Jennifer and Scotia dive into the urgent issue of transparency and accountability in the Massachusetts legislature, a topic that crosses party lines and draws advocates from across the political spectrum. The conversation uncovers how Massachusetts lacks fundamental nonpartisan research support for lawmakers, making it the only state in the country without this basic legislative office. Jennifer and Scotia expose the “mob-like” leadership structure, the culture of committee stipends for little or no work, and hidden budget earmarks that slipped past the public and lawmakers. They critique the lack of local news scrutiny, the persistence of backroom deals, and the enormous barriers facing reformers. The episode also sparks debate over term limits, full-time versus part-time legislatures, stagnation from entrenched leadership, and the role of citizen coalitions like the Coalition to Reform Our Legislature. The discussion reveals controversial comments about power hoarding, lack of individual lawmaker autonomy, and misuse of taxpayer dollars, urging listeners to demand more from their elected representatives. “It's very much run almost like a mafia, where leadership calls a lot of the shots.” ~Scotia Hille This week on Political Contessa: The origins and mission of Act on Mass and Coalition to Reform Our Legislature Massachusetts is the “least transparent” state legislature in the country The complete absence of a nonpartisan legislative research bureau in Massachusetts The power dynamics and control tactics used by legislative leadership Stipend reform and the existence of “ghost committees” that rarely meet The connection between committee assignments, added salary, and political loyalty Lack of individual roll call votes and the use of consolidated amendments to conceal spending Decline in local journalism and its impact on holding the legislature accountable Connect with Scotia Hille and Resources Mentioned: Act on Mass Website: https://actonmass.org Democracy in Decline Report (referenced research): https://report.actonmass.org Coalition to Reform Our Legislature (KROLL): https://reform-ma.org Twitter: @Act_on_Mass For more insights on statehouse transparency and reform in Massachusetts, follow Act on Mass and join the Coalition to Reform Our Legislature’s weekly meetings. In Florida they’re calling her ‘MAGA Marva’ Johnson, the ally of Governor DeSantis who is very nearly the 13th president of the historically Black university, FAMU. How did we get here, where a nominee who is roundly rejected by the community is STILL being lifted to the highest office? And what happens next? To answer these questions, Andrew Gillum is joined by two guests. Dr. Keneshia Grant, PhD and professor of political science at Howard U, and Monica Williams Harris, an attorney who serves on FAMU Foundation’s board of directors. Hosts Angela Rye, Tiffany Cross, and Andrew Gillum are no strangers to Fox News telling lies. Recently, Fox misrepresented and subtly mocked Mayor Ras Baraka for comparing himself to the biblical figure David while on stage for Angela Rye’s State of the People tour. Angela’s not sure if she should be upset about it and is looking to her hosts for advice. Should we care about what the lying made-for-the-comfort-of-white-audiences news says? Or are we better off ignoring them? This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum speak with the Mayor of Newark, Ras Baraka. The Mayor made headlines last Friday after he was arrested by ICE while protesting a new ICE detention facility in his home city. Mayor Baraka’s arrest comes in the context of Trump’s sprawling campaign of retribution against his “political enemies.” From law firms, to judges, to universities and elected officials–Trump is weaponizing the federal government against anyone he perceives to have wronged him. The legal attacks are often effective even if his administration doesn’t win the case… Today our hosts discuss government retaliation. The chilling effect of these attacks could have long term impacts on free speech, the application of justice, and our ability to govern. Mayor of Newark, New Jersey, Ras J. Baraka is a Newark native, poet, and educator. Under his leadership, Newark achieved a 60-year low in crime, replaced 23,000 lead service lines, and reduced homelessness by 57%. A member of Alpha Phi Alpha, Ras is a lifelong advocate for equity and opportunity. He’s now running a campaign for Governor of New Jersey. In this week’s episode of Political Contessa, Jennifer takes center stage for a candid solo discussion on her background as a first-generation college graduate, her dedication to education, and her critique of the current climate in higher education. Drawing on her experience at Stony Brook University and subsequent legal and advocacy work, Jennifer delivers an introspective and forthright perspective on the value of hard work versus elite entitlement, focusing especially on Harvard University’s recent controversies. Jennifer offers a critical analysis of Harvard’s fraught dealings with the federal government, including funding cuts and questions over campus climate and student protests. She explores the role of institutional endowments, administrative accountability, and the impact of activism on academic freedom. The conversation addresses issues of donor responsibility, campus diversity, tolerance in hiring and admissions, and the expectation that organizations uphold their stated missions. Jennifer doesn’t shy away from controversial viewpoints, pressing listeners to consider what true educational leadership, civic-minded activism, and institutional accountability should look like in today’s America. “If you discriminate based on gender, religion, race, you are a racist and you are a sexist and you should not be teaching classes.” ~Jennifer Nassour This week on Political Contessa: The contrast between elite and state university experiences ● The impact of federal funding cuts on Harvard ● The significance of Harvard’s $53 billion endowment ● Administrative responses to campus protests and inclusivity ● The influence of the Boston Globe’s editorial stance ● Faculty and admissions tolerance in higher education ● Donor expectations and institutional missions ● Challenging entrenched culture in elite academic settings Awaken Your Inner Political Contessa Thanks for tuning into this week’s episode of Political Contessa. Florida A&M University is in search of a new president. Several finalists have been put forward, including Marva Johnson, who has strong ties to Governor DeSantis and his anti-DEI, anti-Black history stances. With the June primary about seven weeks away, the campaign trail in the race for mayor is heating up with new ads and policy proposals. Andrew Cuomo released his mental health plan and announced plans to run on a third-party ballot line this November, while Zohran Mamdani rallied with hundreds of supporters in Brooklyn and Brad Lander released his first campaign ad of the cycle. NY1 investigative reporter Courtney Gross and political reporters Bobby Cuza and Ayanna Harry break down the latest developments in the crowded race. After that, the “Off Topic” team continues its weekly series of profiles on Democratic mayoral primary candidates. This week's installment finds them discussing the candidacy of City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, who promised to shake up the race when she announced her campaign in March. On our last main episode, Angela Rye pointed out that “apathy” won the last election. Trump won the popular vote with 77+ million votes. However, nearly 90 million voting-age Americans did not vote at all. On today’s SoloPod, Angela speaks with one of those non-voters to talk through his decision. It turns out “apathetic” is the last word we’d use to describe him. Our guest, Reginald Henderson, is an entrepreneur, community advocate, and facilitator from Dayton, Ohio. He is captivated by design, loves to explore and experiment, and appreciates the intersection of beauty and function that is essentialism. Reginald currently manages his family-owned pest removal business: Ladybug Services. Want to ask Angela a question? Subscribe to our YouTube channel to participate in the chat. This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum discuss one of the United States’ main exports: rightwing populism. While the U.S. is constricting imports from other countries (with serious shortages looming), we continue to be a major exporter of culture, including MAGA culture. We can trace rightwing populist ideology’s spread AND learn a thing or two for our own movements. We’ll revisit a question we posed on a past MiniPod: should our podcast feature conservative guests? Our hosts have thoughts on this one y’all. Tens of thousands of government employees are set to be re-classified as “schedule F” political appointees by the Trump administration. In this week's episode, I take the mic solo to reflect on the passing of Pope Francis and what his legacy means for faith, culture, and the ever-present world of politics. Raised in a deeply Catholic family, my experience as both a political commentator and a lifelong Catholic gives me a unique lens on how Church leadership ripples into our communities and institutions. My journey through religion, personal loss, and public service shapes how I look at the Catholic Church’s pivotal moments—and what comes next. I share candid and personal thoughts on the influence of Pope Francis, from his humble roots as the first Latin American Pope to the bold, sometimes controversial stances he took on climate change, LGBTQ inclusion, and the evolving role of women in the Church. I question how politics weaves its way into religion—and vice versa—and explore what it means when Church leaders step into the political spotlight. I don’t hold back about my critiques, including my call for married and female priests, and my opinion on separating personal choice from public policy. I also take you inside the secretive papal conclave, share my vision for a younger, more progressive Pope, and reflect on a moving personal encounter with Pope Francis in Rome. “Politics is in every bit of life. There’s politics in your offices, there’s politics in your friend groups, there’s politics in your tennis team, there’s politics in your playgroup.” ~Jennifer Nassour This week on Political Contessa: My reflections on Pope Francis’ legacy and his passing Pope Francis’ historic firsts and progressive actions The impact of Church's stances on major social and political issues Why I believe we should welcome married and female priests My critiques of conservatism and calls for reforming the Church The secretive process behind the papal conclave The essential role of women in transmitting faith and values Why there's politics in every layer of life Awaken Your Inner Political Contessa Thanks for tuning into this week’s episode of Political Contessa. Three days out from the Australian election and the cost of living continues to be a key issue on the campaign trail. New figures released today show annual inflation is at 2.4 percent which is slightly higher than expected for the latest quarter. Australia's Treasurer said the figures are within the target range for inflation - but that has not stopped the coalition holding firm to its line that the Labor government has been disastrous for the Australian economy. Corin Dann spoke to Lisa Owen.

This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum are TOGETHER IN MIAMI!! This week’s convo kicks off with a listener question: why not move to Africa? But for real, it’s cheaper to live there or open a business–plus there’s a tradition of Black Americans moving to Africa. However, we DON’T want to be moving like white colonizers. The Trump administration has threatened to pull funding from Universities that teach subjects they don’t approve of, like Critical Race Theory and LGBTQ+ studies (so much for the party of free speech). How do we protect freedom of thought in our schools and institutions from a repressive authoritarian government? Reverend Al Sharpton has had talks with Target’s CEO about DEI after a boycott of the company initiated by Pastor Jamal Bryant. Not everyone approves of the Reverend inserting himself into the situation, which begs the question: who gets to call themselves a leader of the Black community? Are we a leaderless movement?? A shout-out to the State of the People Tour which kicks off in Atlanta this week! A special thanks to Angela Rye for showing up to work at NLP today despite being DEEP in organizing mode. Gen Z Responds to Roland’s Black Bank of Justice Pt. 1 This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum host a cross-generational discussion with three politically active youths. Our young guests respond to Roland Martin’s statement from last week’s show that young folks are withdrawing from the Black bank of justice without making their own deposits. Our guests provide an alternative perspective to Roland’s–a perspective that our hosts will (politely) challenge. OUR GUESTS: Victoria Pannell is an organizer with Until Freedom and Social Impact Advisor with We Inspire Justice. Ty Hobson-Powell led the “51 For 51” Washington D.C. statehood campaign and founded Concerned Citizens Demanding Change. In 2024, he managed the Mail-In Ballot Processing Division for D.C.’s Board of Elections. He’s been appointed State Political Program Director in Mississippi, supporting a major voter engagement initiative with Mississippi Votes. His upcoming book, The Fire Right Now—a nod to James Baldwin—is slated for release this summer. Marley Dias is a celebrated changemaker and one of the youngest people to appear on Forbes 30 Under 30. She launched #1000BlackGirlBooks, collecting over 15,000 books featuring Black girl protagonists. A junior at Harvard, Marley is also the host and executive producer of Netflix’s Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices. And of course we’ll hear from you! Governor Whitmer on Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist AND her visit with Trump. This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum are joined by the Governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer. Governor Whitmer’s term is almost over and the race to succeed her is on. Notably, she has not endorsed her Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist (nor anyone else). Lt. Gov Gilchrist is a friend of the show and the Black community, and so the hosts must ask: what gives? PLUS Governor Whitmer has said she’s open to working with Trump and she was even spotted recently at the White House in a somewhat embarrassing photo. We’ll get to the bottom of her controversial decision to meet with the president; was the meeting productive or was she just used as a photo-op prop? And of course we’ll hear from you! Angela Rye went LIVE to breakdown the new deportation regime under our facist-in-chief, President Trump. The Trump administration has issued a deportation notice to an immigration attorney who is a full U.S. citizen. They said it was an accident but Trump is openly saying he’d like to deport U.S. citizens to El Salavadorean concentration camps with no due process. Want to ask Angela a question? Andrew Gillum goes LIVE with Gen Z organizer Deyona Burton who shares her insight into how self-care and activism go hand in hand. Burton first made waves in 2020 when she led the effort to change the name of her Florida highschool from “Robert E. Lee” to “Riverside” High. Then, while attending FSU, Deyona Burton rose to national prominence as the Director of Programs for College Democrats of America. Her accolades include being honored at the White House, an impactful TEDx talk, earning the President’s Volunteer Service Award, and being named the 2024 National Action Network’s MLK Youth Honoree. Having contributed to campaigns and worked within offices at local, state, and national levels, Deyona now continues her mission to drive change from Washington, D.C. Hosts Angela Rye and Tiffany Cross LET IT ALL OUT in this week’s MiniPod. They’ll critique certain Dems (cough cough Senator Booker cough cough), fret over the CRAZINESS of everything, and contemplate the viability of “the system” that is America. It’s heating up and getting smoky–welcome to the group chat y’all. This week hosts Tiffany Cross and Angela Rye are joined by special guest-host: Roland S Martin (of Roland Martin Unfiltered). Roland is one of the most vital sources of independent news for the Black community; his YouTube channel @rolandsmartin has 1.8 million subscribers and counting. Today’s show kicks off with Trump’s attacks on the Blacksonian (National Museum of African American History) and the massive protests against him over the weekend. A lot of folks are complaining about the Trump administration but we don’t see enough doing; Roland says younger generations are “withdrawing from the bank of justice” without making any deposits. How do we help Black folks battle the apathy and feel their agency? Tariffs–tariffs for everyone! Or not? Let’s be 100% clear y’all: tariffs are a tax that WE will pay. Our hosts explain how tariffs work, why they were put in place, and who benefits (SPOILER ALERT: it’s not us). Male enrollment at HBCUs is hitting historical lows, mirroring attendance at colleges nationwide. This represents a failure to engage men in the educational process that starts well before college. The hosts discuss causes, impacts, and potential solutions. Host Andrew Gillum is out this week. He’s on a field trip with the kids to NASA. Have fun Andrew! And of course we’ll hear from you! The Trump administration has issued an executive order to remove Black history from the Smithsonian. It targets “woke ideology,” the trans-Atlantic slave trade, and anything else that might make white folks uncomfortable. Yes, we know that LOTS of TRUE history makes white folks uncomfortable. But Trump has more to gain by this Soviet-style erasure than just avoiding scary feelings… Angela Rye goes LIVE to breakdown Trump’s latest Executive Order, “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.” Want to ask Angela a question? Hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Tiffany Cross, along with guest-host Elie Mystal, respond to a provocative listener question submitted by Dr. B.J. Brunious. Dr. Brunious saw last week’s episode and, as a Black gay man, was TRIGGERED. He doesn’t know anyone who identifies as “gay” before “Black” (as was discussed last week). He asks how it came to be that some Black folk think that one group’s gains (hispanics, LGBTQ, etc.) mean the Black community’s loss? Isn’t this the same logic used by white people AGAINST the Black community all the time? This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, AND guest-host Elie Mystal celebrate Senator Cory Booker for his 25-hour (!) protest speech. Booker set the record for the longest speech in Congress EVER. Our guest-host Elie Mystal is the justice correspondent for The Nation, where he writes radical truths about our flawed justice system. This former attorney turned thought leader is one of the most hilarious, well-spoken, and pointed progressive voices out there–if you don’t know him, get to! He’s just released a new book, Bad Law: Ten Popular Laws That Are Ruining America. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson is having a temper tantrum; he has cancelled ALL votes on the House floor after he failed to quash a bipartisan bill that would allow new parents in Congress to vote remotely. GOD FORBID Congress make allowances for new mothers. Was the Supreme Court decision that mandated integration a mistake?? Our hosts take a fresh look at Brown v. Board of Education with Elie Mystal and discuss movement building in the Democratic party. Elie explains how a shared history of racist laws and practices shapes this moment, how the left can (and should) adopt certain strategies from the right, and how to find hope even in the darkest times. Elon Musk was the largest donor in the 2024 presidential election–and now he’s setting himself up to be the main financier of MAGA candidates. Host Angela Rye takes us to a race in Wisconsin for a Supreme Court seat, where Musk is bribing voters and handing out million-dollar checks in unhinged (and possibly illegal) publicity stunts. Meanwhile, in Louisiana, Curtis James Jackson (AKA 50 Cent) dropped a video where he endorsed an amendment to the state’s constitution that would have significantly lowered the income tax for the wealthiest people in the state (such as himself). Despite the deceptive nature of some of these amendments and their deliberately misleading names, voters showed up to hand MAGA the L. Want to ask Angela a question?
