On episode 105 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers recap the end of the government shutdown. Moderate Democrats in the Senate caved and passed a temporary budget without getting their demands met to continue funding health care subsidies. What the heck happened and what was the point of this record-breaking standoff that saw federal workers furloughed and the poorest Americans lose food assistance? It is not Democrats who “lost” the government shutdown, it is us, the American people, but it has made the Democrats look like losers. MAGA is teeing up to rig the 2026 election. Reporter Ari Berman wrote an article this week about Trump's pardons for high-profile attorneys and others involved in his plot to overturn the 2020 election–but it’s not just about 2020. Ari’s reporting outlines what Trump’s likely path toward rigging 2026 will be, and the under-the-radar efforts by the Trump administration to fill the voting process with red tape (voter ID, ban voting machines, etc.), which Ari says the administration will use as a pre-text to claim that “millions of Americans voted illegally” in 2026. Ari Berman is the national voting rights correspondent at Mother Jones. Read Ari’s article here: https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2025/11/trump-martin-fake-electors-pardon-2020/ And of course we’ll hear from you! On this week’s (somewhat) SoloPod, Angela Rye is joined by renowned political commentator on Native Land Pod, our very own Tiffany Cross, to talk about these BEEFS between Black media outlets and figures. There are mysterious forces driving wedges between Black media figures who represent various factors of the Black community. We gotta have a meta conversation about what’s driving these beefs. For example, Roland Martin recently criticized Charlamagne for using his platform (The Breakfast Club) to call for an end to the government shutdown. Are famous Black media figures obligated to strategize together for the good of the Black community? Want to ask Angela a question? Subscribe to our YouTube channel to participate in the chat. Host Angela Rye is joined on stage for a candid conversation with Vice President Kamala Harris! This convo kicks off with a look back to election night 2024. VP Harris takes us through HER experience of that night and the days and weeks that followed. They discuss some of the most controversial political issues that Kamala grappled on the campaign and afterward, like the war in Gaza, and how to confront fascism on-the-rise. VP Harris' new political memoir, 107 days, goes deep into her historic run for president. You can buy it wherever books are sold. On this week’s MiniPod, our hosts Angela Rye, Tiffany Cross, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers are joined by Maurice Mitchell, the National Director of the Working Families Party for a conversation on breaking the two-party system and getting corporate (and AIPAC) money out of politics. The WFP is a political party aimed at taking power from the rich and powerful, and putting it in the hands of the working class through a broad multi-racial coalition. They run their own candidates AND run candidates through Democratic Party primaries, candidates who have fought for higher wages, a fairer criminal justice system, getting big money out of politics, and more. On episode 104 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers go through this week’s election results and take an account of how our Black candidates (and voters) performed. The race for NYC’s mayor dominated the airwaves, where Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani won. BUT there were other important races. Black mayors were elected across the country, the governor race in Virginia and New Jersey went solidly Democratic, and State-level elections in the South saw typically conservative seats flip blue. Folks are wondering if Mamdani is the new “face of the Democratic party” which WE think is missing the point. NLP is joined by President Biden’s former press secretary (the first Black woman to hold the job) Karine Jeane-Pierre to discuss some of the election results and Democrat’s media strategy. In her new book, Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside Party Lines, Karine shares some pointed critiques of a party she no longer identifies with, and our hosts ask some pointed questions of Karine. And our hosts respond to your questions! There’s an interesting one about infiltrating the Republican party and another from a chef asking who is keeping our legacy “recipes.” If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: http://www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/ and send to @nativelandpod. On this episode hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum answer YOUR questions at the AfroTech conference in Houston, Texas. AfroTech is a hub for Black S.T.E.M professionals, innovators, entrepreneurs, & visionaries. It was founded in 2016 by Blavity Inc. and aims to inspire future Black leaders within the tech industry where Black professionals are significantly underrepresented. Black workers accounted for just 7.4 percent of the high-tech workforce and 5.7 percent of high-tech managers, despite making up nearly 12 percent of the total U.S. workforce, according to U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. On episode 103 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers are TOGETHER at a studio in Houston, Texas. Starting on November 1st, SNAP (food stamps) benefits will reportedly run out of funding, affecting more than 40 million Americans, or about 10% of the country. This despite the fact that the federal government could easily appropriate funds to continue the SNAP program through November. This is a result of the federal government shutdown which will soon be the longest shutdown in U.S. history. This shutdown is doing damage to American’s faith in our own government. With Democrats poised to take control of the House in 2026, what responsibility will they have to restore the trust deficit? And in the meantime, wtf do WE do?!? Our hosts discuss how to stand in the gap and support our communities even when the government won’t. The Perfect Neighbor debuted this month as the #1 film on Netflix, bringing attention to Stand Your Ground laws through the story of Ajike “AJ” Owens. AJ was killed in 2023 by her neighbor Susan Lorincz, a woman known throughout the neighborhood as “The Karen." This documentary, told through police bodycam footage of the confrontations leading up to the horrific murder, is part of a movement for social change. On this MiniPod, our hosts Angela Rye, Tiffany Cross, and Andrew Gillum speak with the mother of Ajike Owens, Pamela Dias, and executive producer of the film, Takema Robinson. In honor of Ajike’s legacy, these two co-founded the Standing In The Gap Fund with a vision to transform grief into action and seek justice for those impacted by racial violence. Florida’s first-in-the-nation Stand Your Ground law played a key role in Ajike’s murder. Her killer researched the law BEFORE shooting Ajike and using it as her legal defense. Ajike, Takema, and SO many others are seeking to overturn the law that’s disproportionately used to justify murdering members of the Black community. On episode 102 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers are joined by Charlamagne Tha God, host of The Breakfast Club, to talk about the controversy NLP stirred up with our “anti-intellectualism” episode last week. Our hosts also cover Trump’s grifting, a call for a general strike, and an update on threats to the Voting Rights Act. Trump is seeking $230M in damages from his own Justice Department for investigations into him, the 2016 Russia-election-interference investigation and the investigation into his handling of classified documents. Is it likely that he’ll actually get this money? The mayor of Chicago, Brandon Johnson, has called for a general strike to push back against the actions of the Trump administration. He is the highest ranking public official to do so. We’ll hear his call to action and ask: what does it realistically look like for us to withhold our labor en masse? Are we ready for that?? Charlamagne Tha God has some criticism for our NLP hosts regarding the segment we did on Marc Lamont Hill, Queenzflip, and the Joe Budden Podcast last week. Charlamagne’s criticism mirrors many of the comments we’ve received. Our hosts respond to the critiques! On episode 101 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers talk about Ignorance. Some Ignorant young Republican leaders had their group chat leaked, as reported in a recent Politico article. You are NOT going to believe what these 20 and 30-something conservatives in positions of power said when they thought they were in private. Their racist and violent rhetoric illuminates how young conservatives think and how these words become policy, see below– LA county has declared a state of emergency due to the ICE raids taking place there. The Trump administration is nabbing up green card holders and American citizens as they arbitrarily arrest anyone who LOOKS LIKE an immigrant (AKA brown)--a prime example of how racist words become policy. There’s a viral clip going around of Marc Lamont Hill getting yelled at for using “big words” on the Joe Budden podcast. Is this a sign of a broader anti-intellectual strain in our culture? Or do we need to keep an open mind toward folks who slander “intellectual” talk? California Governor Gavin Newsom rejected 5 reparations bills meant to provide the Black community with restorative justice. We’re showing the receipts and holding this supposedly progressive governor to account. He did approve 1 reparations-related bill… Politico Article - Racist Group Chats: https://www.politico.com/news/2025/10/14/private-chat-among-young-gop-club-members-00592146 If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: http://www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/ and send to @nativelandpod. We are celebrating episode 100 of Native Land Pod!! With our hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, AND Bakari Sellers. Bakari joins as our fourth host of Native Land Pod! Like Angela, Bakari is the child of an activist, and similar to Andrew, he made history when he became the youngest South Carolina state rep back in 2006 (beating a 26 year incumbent). He brings his sharp wit, cutting political commentary, and sibling-like sass. Welcome Bakari!! Native Land Pod has launched a Substack for our 100th episode! On episode 99 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum talk shutdowns, Bad Bunny at the super bowl, and a new directive from Trump to go after “domestic terrorists.” Republicans and Democrats are once again at an impasse on the budget, meaning the federal government is officially shut down. Democrats are making a stand over health care. The Trump administration is threatening to use the shutdown to enact more cuts and layoffs. Our hosts outline what’s at risk and predict what comes next. Puerto Rican super star Bad Bunny has been tapped to perform at this year’s Super Bowl halftime show amidst a direct assault on the Hispanic community by ICE and the federal government. It recalls Kendrick Lamar’s politically charged performance last year. Do these performances have an impact, and if so, what is it? Why isn’t the media covering NSPM-7? In what could be the biggest change to national security since the Patriot Act, President Trump has directed the FBI, the IRS, and other federal agencies to go after domestic “terrorists.” Non-profits that support progressive causes and shows like ours could now face terrorism charges for “fomenting political violence.” This is probably the biggest underreported story of the year! Hosts center power, policy, and progress, in their discussion about what it takes to carry that work into the next generation. We dig into the future of Black political power, the fight to protect voting rights and Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, and the role of grassroots organizing in pushing back against misinformation and building lasting change. Taking place in Washington, D.C., this live recording captures the urgency and the hope of the moment and is grounded in collective power. What do you do when family members ask you for money? It can become a real problem, particularly if you’ve “made it” in their eyes, and they start hitting you up like an ATM. On episode 98 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum address the selective application of the first amendment, the right to free speech. Our first guest, Karen Attiah, was (until recently) an op-ed writer for the Washington Post. She was fired last week after writing a post on social media that said she wasn’t going to mourn Charlie Kirk, a white man who promoted violence and vitriol. She did not celebrate his death or condone political violence. The Washington Post fired her for having a hot take, which is LITERALLY HER JOB as an opinion writer. Our second guest is a White House Correspondent for AURN (American Urban Radio Networks), Ebony McMorris. In a viral clip, Trump refused to answer a question from Ebony during a press Q&A, and repeatedly insisted that she was “obnoxious,” reminiscent of previous incidents with Black female reporters like Yamish Alcindor, who seem to trigger the president simply by existing. Is this what the first amendment looks like for Black women? One of you submitted a question about Jimmy Kimmel which ties nicely into our theme today, and tied to all of it is the sanctification of the life of racist rightwing commentator, Charlie Kirk. There was a House Resolution honoring Kirk that passed this week which many Democratic lawmakers voted “yes” on, including those in deep blue districts. Representative Jasmine Crockett noted that there were only two white Democratic representatives who voted “no.” Is this the return of the Dixiecrats? On episode 97 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum address Charlie Kirk’s murder AND the collective response to it. We are all in agreement that Charlie Kirk’s assassanation was gruesome and horrible. But can we also agree that pre-emptively blaming Black folks for it, sending death threats for criticizing Charlie, and Attorney General Pam Bondi promising legal action against “hate speech” is also gruesome and horrible? Our hosts talk about their personal experience with Charlie (and his supporters) and discuss the fallout from his death. This is not a right v. left issue y’all, this is racism, plain and simple. Sergio Hudson, renowned fashion designer, went viral after calling out “Black A-listers” at New York’s fashion week for skipping out on shows by Black-owned clothing brands, such as his own. He joins our hosts to explain why he felt the need to speak out and clarify the importance of Black solidarity at events like NYC fashion week. And of course we’ll hear from you! On episode 96 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum take a look at Kamala Harris’ new tell-all memoir, the possibility of a Trump 3rd term, and the extrajudicial killings by the U.S. and Israeli militaries. In Kamala Harris’ new memoir, she speaks candidly about her relationship with Joe Biden, his staff, and the 2024 race for President. She holds nothing back and our hosts speculate her criticism of Biden will NOT be taken lightly by the establishment. Trump has not explicitly said that he’s going to run for a third term, in violation of the 22nd amendment. However, his team is selling “Trump ‘28” hats, and he hasn’t ruled it out. Knowing Trump, why aren’t those in power taking this possibility more seriously? Israel tried to kill Hamas leaders in Doha, Qatar (a close U.S. ally) while those leaders were meeting to discuss a proposed Gaza ceasefire, eliminating the possibility for peace. Meanwhile, the U.S. military blows up a boat in the Caribbean that the Trump administration claimed was running drugs without providing evidence. These extrajudicial killings undermine international law and American prestige. This is not the first time Israel has sabotaged U.S.-led negotiations with airstrikes, eliminating the possibility for peace and straining U.S. relationships with its Mid-East allies. On episode 95 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum take us to D.C. for updates in the Epstein saga PLUS unbelievable statements of SUPPORT for Trump from D.C.’s mayor. A group of sexual assault survivors testified in Congress this week, the victims of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghilaine Maxwell. Democrats have said that the government is complicit in Epstein’s crimes and that the blame goes “all the way to the top.” They have support from across the aisle in a rare moment of bi-partisanship. D.C.’s Mayor Muriel Bowser has had a change of heart when it comes to Trump’s occupation of the nation’s capital. She issued an executive order welcoming the federal troops and agents patrolling the streets to stay LONGER! Among other baffling details, the Mayor’s order calls for a “Safe and Beautiful Emergency Operations Center.” Rapper Cardi B kept it classy when the judge read the “not guilty” verdict in the civil lawsuit brought against her by a former security guard. She did lose her cool literally seconds after leaving the courtroom though… We’ll recap the trial that nearly awarded Emani Ellis 24 million dollars in damages. And of course we’ll hear from you! TALK TO ME, TEXT ITThe blurry lines between symbolic gestures and substantive policy have once again captured the nation's attention with Trump's flag burning executive order. Despite the dramatic headlines, the order doesn't actually criminalize flag burning or impose jail sentences - it simply reinforces existing laws about property damage and riots. This raises fascinating questions about why leaders issue such proclamations when they don't substantially change the legal landscape.Media polarization takes center stage as Vanity Fair's potential Melania Trump cover story reportedly has staff threatening resignations. The magazine's apparent pivot toward more centrist coverage highlights the deepening divisions within cultural institutions. These tensions reflect broader questions about viewpoint diversity in media and whether publications can successfully navigate political differences while maintaining editorial integrity.Perhaps most provocative is the ongoing debate about political speech and defamation. When CNN commentator Tiffany Cross described Stephen Miller as a "white supremacist" not as opinion but as "fact," she inadvertently opened a fascinating discussion about the boundaries of protected speech. Where exactly is the line between harsh political criticism and potentially actionable defamation? This intersection of law, ethics, and political discourse deserves our careful attention as we navigate increasingly heated rhetoric. The episode concludes with a thoughtful reflection on facing fears - from the political courage needed to express unpopular views to the personal bravery required for physical challenges like completing a grueling mud run at age 50. What's the scariest thing you've ever done? Whether political, professional, or deeply personal, our moments of courage often define us more than our comfortable routines. On episode 93 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum are forced to remind all of us that slavery was, in fact, bad. Fitness trainer and TV personality Jillian Michaels was on Abby Phillip’s CNN show recently making some wild claims about how slavery wasn’t that bad, wasn’t just committed by white people, and wasn’t actually that big of a part of the country’s founding because “only 2%” of Americans owned slaves… We have so many questions y’all–like why this person with no journalism or history experience featured on a CNN panel–but first we have to address some of her specific claims and misleading “facts.” We’ll hear from Nikole Hannah-Jones herself (the creator of the 1619 project). Our guest, Sherrilyn Ifill, gives American democracy a “D.” But, she says, our problems started long before Trump. She joins the NLP hosts to identify the weak points of our democracy and what building blocks might remain in a post-Trump era. Then, a deep dive into how integration led to the draining of public funds, and whether or not the courts will hold as a co-equal branch of government. Ms. Ifill is a renowned civil rights lawyer and scholar who served as the President and Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. On this week’s MiniPod, our host Tiffany Cross has a story to tell Angela Rye and Andrew Gillum. Tiffany almost got into a fight on a cable news roundtable. We have some juicy behind the scenes details that segues into a surprisingly intellectual conversation about working in media while Black (spoiler alert: the Karens are everywhere). This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum would be remiss not to address the crackdown happening in our nation’s capital. The residents of Washington D.C., a city with more than 40% Black residents, are under siege. We hav reports from the ground of federal agents rolling out in overwhelming force and literally showing up on folks’ doorsteps. Trump’s stated goal is to crack down on “crime,” homelessness, and teenagers. Our hosts watch some clips and discuss, featuring friends of the show, Ty Hobson-Powell and Elizabeth Booker Houston. Then an update on the redistricting wars with Rep. Veasey (TX-33), Rep. Cleaver (MO-5), and State Rep Jones (TX-147). Texas Governor Abbot has said he will end the special session he called to redraw Texas’ electoral maps, which Texas Democrats fled the state to protest. What happens next? Will the Texas Dems be apprehended by the FBI? Do they have a path to victory in Texas or is the strategy mutually assured destruction (looking at you California)? We get the facts from the source. Did you know that the Democratic Republic of the Congo supplies much of the world’s cobalt, a vital mineral that helps power your smart phone? While this critical resource should be making the country fabulously wealthy, it has instead been a major driver of violence and exploitation. On this week’s MiniPod, our hosts Angela Rye and Andrew Gillum gotta talk more about redistricting. Trump is putting pressure on Republican-controlled states to redraw their electoral maps in order to give Republicans more seats in congress, an anti-democratic practice known as gerrymandering. This practice typically undercuts the representation of the Black community and others, reducing political influence on a state and national level. Our hosts dig into the mechanics of how electoral maps are created, what the rules are now, and what they could be. On episode 91, our hosts Angela Rye and Andrew Gillum bring on super-guest and renowned progressive journalist: Mehdi Hasan. Tiffany Cross is away this week but she sent us a report from the ground in the DRC. Mehdi Hasan was featured on a Jubilee debate where he (a proclaimed progressive) debated 20 “far-right” young people. The debate was shocking, participants called themselves fascists, and told Mehdi, a naturalized citizen, to “get out” of the country. Mehdi reflects on the debate, the surprise and trauma of it, and what it says (and doesn’t say) about modern conservatives. In addition, the hosts chat with him about redistricting (see below). Follow Mehdi Hassan’s work at https://zeteo.com/ Gerrymandering, the unfair drawing of electoral maps to benefit one’s own party, has been an issue for decades. Egged on by the Trump administration, we are now on the verge of an all-out gerrymandering war. Redistricting (redrawing maps) normally happens at the end of each decade. Trump demanded that Texas redraw their map now to add more Republican seats and the Texas GOP obliged. In response, Democratic state reps have fled Texas to prevent the new maps from being voted on, and governors of blue states like California and New York have threatened to change their state laws to allow more partisan gerrymandering in favor of Democrats. Tiffany Cross is meeting with the president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She’ll talk with him ab0ut the civil conflict in the DRC and foreign exploitation of the country’s mineral resources. TAKE OUR SURVEY, WIN A PRIZE! Hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Tiffany ask: Why Do Some Black People Feel Like “White is Right”? In too many folks' eyes, a thing ain’t good until it’s been adopted by mainstream (white) culture. The same news story that makes waves on CNN falls flat on BET. The same person buying a fancy sweater from Ralph Lauren will scoff at House of Gray. Black folks are not immune to this, those who automatically trust a white doctor (or other specialist) over a Black one, for example. We have some serious deprogramming to do y’all, start here with us. This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum talk about Black elitism and Black owned brands with the owner of Actively Black, Lanny Smith. You might’ve seen Lanny Smith’s viral posts recently where he addresses the controversy around Ralph Lauren’s new “Oak Bluffs” line of apparel. Oak Bluffs, a town on Martha’s Vineyard, has been a gathering place for the Black community for more than 100 years. Folks have called the clothing line “elitist;” the jackets and blazers cost well over $500. Should we denounce this celebration of Black culture just for being elitist? Maybe, maybe not. More importantly, we do not need white businesses to validate Black culture. The Black community spends 10’s of billions of dollars on apparel every year, and just a fraction of that goes back to the Black community, even though WE are the source of so much American style. Let’s talk about how we change THAT. Plus, what is happening in Gaza right now is beyond horrific. We have to spend a little time updating y’all on the situation, Gazans are starving to death. On this week’s MiniPod our host Angela Rye (supported by hosts Tiffany Cross and Andrew Gillum) turn DOWN an invite from MSNBC. God bless. In more important news, yet another blatant assault on a Black man by police officers. What was 22 year old William McNeil Jr’s crime? Asking what he was pulled over for and requesting the officer call their supervisor. They smashed his window, busted his face, and arrested him, giving him stitches, a chipped tooth, and a concussion. It’s sad that if we’re being honest, it’s lucky he escaped with his life. This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum comment on a passing of note. The community lost Malcolm-Jamal Warner this week. Malcolm-Jamal played Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show and was known for his spoken word and musical prowess. We’ll remember him today on NLP. Hunter Biden has been doing interviews and laying it ALL out there, going into detail about his drug addiction, and certain dynamics within the Democratic party. Our hosts dig into the details while Tiffany questions whether we should give a sh*t about anything Hunter has to say. The conversation dovetails into a debate about how to get the most from a feckless Democratic party, and a look-back on Obama’s legacy. Breonna Taylor’s killer was finally convicted and sentenced. It’s not the sentence we wanted but it is longer then the one-day sentence that the Trump administration had asked for. We’ll update y’all on the case. This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum are joined by special guest, 13 year old influencer and political savant, Knowa De Baraso. Knowa’s gone viral with his hot political takes and become a go-to interview for national and international news stations. He plans to bring his sharp wit to his interviews, and brutal honesty to topics that usually feel off-limits to young voices. Knowa is joining NLP on the Reasoned Choice Media Network with his own show, Now You Know with Knowa De Baraso, on July 30th. Check out Now You Know with Knowa De Baraso July 30th on all platforms. This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum cut through the NOISE. EVERYONE is talking about Jeffrey Epstein’s “client list,” an alleged list of rich and powerful people who molested children trafficked to them by the billionaire, Epstein. Trump’s attorney general, Pam Bondi, seems to have gone back on the Trump campaign’s promise to release the client list. Now, MAGA world is torn. Some are choosing to trust their dear orange leader while others are bucking Trump’s orders to fall in line, and continuing to pursue the release of the list. This is one of the most important political issues to MANY MAGA voters. And that’s the whole point: is this media cycle about Epstein a big distraction? What might it be distracting us from? As we look ahead to the midterms, some Democrats see this rift in MAGA’s base as an opportunity. Our hosts have some words of warning… And of course we’ll hear from you! At NLP we countdown to the 2026 midterm elections at the end of every episode. BUT our hosts Angela Rye, Tiffany Cross, and Andrew Gillum have different opinions on the value of strategizing for the next election. That is, if Trump lets us have an election… Should we be planning for midterms or is our countdown a pipe dream?
