Summary In this episode, Andy welcomes back his friend Stuart Taylor, a PMO leader and PMI PMO Awards judge, author of Becoming the Project Manager. Most of us didn't grow up dreaming of leading projects. We drifted into the role, and then discovered it's far less about plans and methodologies than it is about people, pressure, and learning to lead while you yourself still feel unsure. Stuart shares the story behind the book, including the university project where he publicly chastised a teammate and the response from his dad that changed how he understood leadership. He and Andy dig into the real value and limits of PM certifications, why AI can help you communicate but can't replace the human part, the stakeholder questions younger Stuart was afraid to ask, what his mentor Wayne taught him about proximity and follow-through, and why a new sponsor has to be sold on your project rather than assumed into it. You'll also hear the 30-minute CV rule and the trouble it once caused him. If you're looking for an honest, human look at what it actually takes to become the project manager, this episode is for you! Sound Bites "Well, now that you've reprimanded that person, you do realize you've got to go and pick them back up again?" "So going out into the world with this as my toolkit, and I thought it was a toolkit, but actually it turned out to be more like a life raft because I ended up clinging onto it without reasoning at an early point in my career." "There's an awful lot that falls between the processes, and that's what the early part of the book is really exploring." "I don't believe there's great value in repeatedly recycling the same learning over and over and over again. I think there's much greater value in taking that energy and going to learn something about your industry, the, actual industry that you're working in." "And also, I should add, you will have greater value to them by being there too, because you're the interesting change person in the room then, rather than one of another 200 change people walking around all talking about the same methodologies." "So be the person who is not avoiding hearing about challenges, but actively seeking them out, and cataloging them, and managing them." "Something else I've learned: they don't like you tiptoeing around them." "But if anybody's having to go into the office more frequently now, go and spend some of that time sitting with the people whose world you are changing." "But if your own leader, the person who's supposed to be championing you in the organization just doesn't get it, then you've got an impossible task on your hands." "When your sponsor goes or leaves and somebody else comes in and replaces them, don't just assume that, that because they've now been told they're gonna have to be the sponsor of your project, that they understand it and they can see the value in it." "Every project that you work on, the benefits, they are your accomplishments." "There is no point in being loyal to organizations. Be loyal to people." In this week's episode of Crux True Survival Stories, hosts Kaycee McIntosh and Julie Henningsen tell the extraordinary story of Poon Lim—a Chinese sailor who survived 133 days alone on a life raft in the Atlantic Ocean, the longest solo life raft survival ever recorded. When a German U-boat torpedoes the SS Ben Lomond in 1942, Poon Lim becomes the ship's sole survivor. Adrift with minimal supplies, he battles dehydration, starvation, and despair. Using nothing but his wits and will to live, he catches fish with makeshift hooks, snares seabirds, collects rainwater, and even kills a shark with his bare hands. Discover how Poon Lim endured repeated near-rescues, brutal sun exposure, and complete isolation—and what it truly takes to survive when hope seems impossible. 00:00 Introduction  00:47 Meet the Hosts 01:11 Setting the Scene: Poon Lim's Ordeal Begins 02:39 The Sinking of SS Ben Lamond 06:18 Surviving the Open Ocean 09:39 Crafting a Survival Strategy 11:32 Near Rescues and Psychological Strain 17:08 Storms and Setbacks 18:48 Desperation and Determination 19:49 The Struggle for Survival 20:25 Desperation and Hard Measures 21:26 Sharks: A New Challenge 22:19 Catching a Shark 26:03 The Mental and Physical Toll 27:02 Near Rescue and Renewed Determination 29:19 Final Rescue and Recovery 34:57 Post-War Life and Legacy 37:39 Podcast Outro and Listener Engagement Listen AD FREE: Support our podcast at patreaon: http://patreon.com/TheCruxTrueSurvivalPodcast Email us! thecruxsurvival@gmail.com Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thecruxpodcast/ Get schooled by Julie in outdoor wilderness medicine! https://www.headwatersfieldmedicine.com/ SOURCES Wikipedia: "Poon Lim" Wikipedia: "SS Benlomond (1922)" War History Online: "Mess Steward Poon Lim Survived 133 Days Lost At Sea" History Defined: "Surviving 133 Days at Sea: The Remarkable Life of Poon Lim" Outdoor Revival: "Adrift - Poon Lim survived 133 days at sea on a wooden raft" Factinate: "The Unbelievable Survival Story Of Poon Lim" Today I Found Out: "The Man on the Raft: The Story of Poon Lim" RECOIL OFFGRID: "Survival at Sea" Ships Nostalgia: "Benlomond survivor WWII" Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. This episode of the Crux True Survival Story Podcast, hosted by medical professionals Kaycee McIntosh and Julie Henningsen dives into the harrowing account of the fishing vessel La Conte, which sank in the Gulf of Alaska on January 30th, 1998. The vessel, carrying five experienced fishermen, met its fate in one of the worst storms in Alaska's history. The lack of a life raft, combined with extreme weather conditions and the vessel's age, led to a catastrophic series of events. The crew's ordeal of surviving in 38-degree water in survival suits under hurricane-force winds is recounted in gripping detail. The podcast highlights the extraordinary efforts of three Coast Guard helicopter crews who braved impossible conditions to rescue three of the five men, making it one of the most challenging maritime rescues ever attempted. This story serves as a stark reminder of the ocean's unforgiving nature and the critical importance of proper safety equipment. This episode brings us back to the one thing that determines the quality of your life, your leadership and your direction. It brings us back to the mission. Most men drift because they lose connection to the deeper reason for why they are doing any of this. The goals become noise. The routines feel mechanical. The work becomes something you manage rather than something you lead. This conversation is a reminder to return to the centre. It is a call to rebuild your connection to the mission that is meant to anchor your identity, sharpen your actions and guide the way you show up day after day. Alongside this, I share how we are upgrading the entire Mission 365 journey so that your development continues to evolve with structure, clarity and genuine purpose. In this episode, I cover: • Why most missions lose their meaning and how to reconnect with clarity, emotion and intention • How to create a mission that guides your daily behaviour rather than sitting as empty words • The new and upgraded Recruit Phase that focuses on planning, mindset, strategy and presence • Why progression through the phases must be earned through consistent action rather than assumed • How the Wednesday coaching sessions and Friday development calls help you stay focused and accountable • Why tracking your progress matters and how the percentage markers keep you honest with yourself • A preview of the new Life Raft process which is a twenty eight day reset for men who have lost momentum and want to realign quickly This is a grounding episode. It reminds you that the mission is not a concept. It is the standard you live by. When you reconnect with that standard, everything in your life moves forward with greater purpose and greater strength. Remember the mission. Lead yourself first.

As Ireland square up to the All Blacks at the weekend, we are all New Zealand this week, podcasting from the edge of the world, Richie McCaw's old stomping Christchurch, New Zealand. We explore why the world's richest men are turning NZ's quiet and beautiful South Island into their apocalypse insurance policy. Peter Thiel has bought hundreds of acres near Lake Wānaka, joining a wave of tech billionaires building bunkers at the bottom of the planet. They call it resilience; it looks a lot like retreat. From Victorian settlers fleeing moral decay to modern tech evangelists escaping the society they built, New Zealand has always drawn utopians convinced the world is ending somewhere else. We trace the country's shift from colonial outpost to libertarian life raft, unpacking The Sovereign Individual, the book that shaped Silicon Valley's doomsday economics. A journey through empire, ideology, and the strange new faith that the future belongs only to those who can afford to escape. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

What are the ethical considerations when eradicating invasive species from an island? How do you develop wireless technology to monitor hundreds of traps across difficult terrain? Why do conservation projects like this cost so much more than people expect? These are some of the questions we explore in our conversation about the LIFE Raft project on Rathlin Island, Northern Ireland's only inhabited offshore island. Our guest is David Tosh, a Lecturer in Terrestrial Ecology at the School of Geography and Environmental Sciences, Ulster University. David led the ambitious effort to eradicate feral ferrets and brown rats from Rathlin to protect internationally important seabird colonies. The ferrets were introduced in the 1980s to control rabbits but instead devastated ground-nesting bird populations. David explains the complexities of targeting two species simultaneously using different methods, the development of wireless platforms to monitor traps remotely, and where the money actually goes in projects like this. Success came faster than expected, with Manx shearwaters breeding on Rathlin for the first time in decades, just months after the eradication was completed.Beyond the technical achievements, our conversation explores the social dimensions that often determine whether conservation projects succeed or fail. David shares why the most important measure of success isn't just the return of seabirds, but whether the organisations involved can maintain trust and partnership with the islanders. We discuss the frustrations of five-year funding cycles for projects that require decades of commitment, and what it takes to ensure Rathlin remains ferret-free and rat-free for generations to come.Subscribe to Tommy's Outdoors: Conservation and Science NewsletterSupport the Podcast and Buy Me a Coffee.Recommended Books: tommysoutdoors.com/booksMerch: tommysoutdoors.com/shopFollow Tommy's Outdoors on Bluesky, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and FacebookMentioned in this episode:DisclaimerThe views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the individual participants and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of any organisation. The conversation tackles the big question: "Should I quit if my job feels meaningless?" Craig reveals the four distinct ways people find purpose—from changing the world to simply surviving the day. Ultimately, they argue that in an era of constant change, your greatest skill isn't what you do, but your ability to adapt your perspective and find meaning, even if it feels like you're just a cup of water in an ocean. Bearcats commit Shon Abaev has been named to the McDonald's All-American game, the first Bearcat since Lance Stephenson. Chuck and Houdini react to the news and all things Bearcats. Subscribe to our show on YouTube! Call-In shows after each and every game. The Cincinnati Bearcats' basketball program finds itself in a perplexing situation. Just three weeks ago, the team was ranked and riding high. Now, their NCAA tournament chances have plummeted to a mere 3%. It's a stark reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in college basketball. Despite the on-court struggles, there's a silver lining for Bearcats fans. Shon Abaev, the program's first McDonald's All-American signee since Lance Stephenson, was officially named to the prestigious team. This marks a significant recruiting win for Cincinnati, as Abaev is considered one of the top prospects in the country. The current state of the team, however, is far from ideal. The Bearcats have looked increasingly worse with each game, regardless of venue or opponent's defensive strategy. The lack of answers on the court is concerning, especially considering the talent on the roster. One glaring issue is the isolation-heavy play of Jizzle James. While talented, James rarely scores off assisted baskets, limiting the team's offensive flow. This style of play stands in stark contrast to the successful offenses of past Cincinnati teams under Wes Miller, which featured players like Landers Nolley who could actually shoot. Miller's coaching has come under scrutiny. With a 6-32 record in Quad 1 games and an 0-10 record in Quad 1 home games, the results speak for themselves. The team's regression from last season is particularly alarming, with multiple 20+ point losses already this year. The upcoming game against Utah offers a potential reprieve, but it's clear that a single win won't solve the underlying issues. The Bearcats need a significant turnaround to salvage their season and restore faith in Miller's leadership. Looking ahead, Abaev's arrival next season provides hope. His offensive prowess and length could be the spark Cincinnati desperately needs. However, placing such high expectations on an 18-year-old freshman is a risky proposition. For more insights and a deeper dive into the Bearcats' struggles and future prospects, tune into the Chatterbox Bearcats podcast for this and much more. After doing an MSc and a PhD in social psychology at the LSE, and publishing a book on children's identity, she became a freelance journalist, writing for publications such as Just Seventeen, Cosmopolitan, the New York Times, Good Housekeeping and the Guardian. Anne moved on to writing for screen media and has won numerous awards for her films in the corporate sector. She has also published two crime novels, featuring Sara Kingsley, a single-mother detective — Truth or Dare and Governing Body — both published by the Women's Press.   Anne is committed to teaching and mentoring and in 2010 she started offering private careers counselling to new graduates as well as advising university applicants on their personal statements. She became a Royal Literary Fellow and, most recently, has been supporting students at Brunel University.   In this episode we tackle the mystique surrounding academic writing - what it actually is and why academics are vague about what 'good' looks like in their discipline.   Anne explains how writing is dynamic and how it changes from the starting out phase to writing up; and why your literature is not a fixed entity that won't change.   We also discuss the challenges of academic writing for neurodivergent scholars.   In closing, Anne offers a wealth of top tips including how to find your academic voice and how to ask for the feedback that you need.
