White-On-White Crime ft. Michael Harriot | Angela Rye SoloPod

On this week’s SoloPod, Angela Rye speaks with Michael Harriot about white-on-white crime. In the last few months we’ve seen Charlie Kirk murdered, children killed at Annunciation Catholic Church, and a Minnesota state lawmaker assassinated by a psycho in a Michael Myers mask. White-on-white crime is upending our politics and making people afraid to gather in public. Enough is enough. Read Michael Harriot’s data-driven piece on who commits the most political violence and hate crimes in the USA: https://www.contrabandcamp.com/p/are-leftists-coming-for-you-heres?r=c0yw&utm_medium=ios&triedRedirect=true When a Black person commits a violent crime it’s often spun to be a reflection on the whole community. Why don’t white folks get the same treatment? Angela asks Michael Harriot, award winning journalist and NY Times best-selling author for his book, Black AF History: The Un-Whitewashed Story of America. Want to ask Angela a question? On episode 96 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum take a look at Kamala Harris’ new tell-all memoir, the possibility of a Trump 3rd term, and the extrajudicial killings by the U.S. and Israeli militaries. In Kamala Harris’ new memoir, she speaks candidly about her relationship with Joe Biden, his staff, and the 2024 race for President. She holds nothing back and our hosts speculate her criticism of Biden will NOT be taken lightly by the establishment. Trump has not explicitly said that he’s going to run for a third term, in violation of the 22nd amendment. However, his team is selling “Trump ‘28” hats, and he hasn’t ruled it out. Knowing Trump, why aren’t those in power taking this possibility more seriously? Israel tried to kill Hamas leaders in Doha, Qatar (a close U.S. ally) while those leaders were meeting to discuss a proposed Gaza ceasefire, eliminating the possibility for peace. Meanwhile, the U.S. military blows up a boat in the Caribbean that the Trump administration claimed was running drugs without providing evidence. These extrajudicial killings undermine international law and American prestige. This is not the first time Israel has sabotaged U.S.-led negotiations with airstrikes, eliminating the possibility for peace and straining U.S. relationships with its Mid-East allies. A group of sexual assault survivors testified in Congress this week, the victims of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghilaine Maxwell. D.C.’s Mayor Muriel Bowser has had a change of heart when it comes to Trump’s occupation of the nation’s capital. She issued an executive order welcoming the federal troops and agents patrolling the streets to stay LONGER! Among other baffling details, the Mayor’s order calls for a “Safe and Beautiful Emergency Operations Center.” Rapper Cardi B kept it classy when the judge read the “not guilty” verdict in the civil lawsuit brought against her by a former security guard. Trump demanded that Texas redraw their map now to add more Republican seats and the Texas GOP obliged. Hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Tiffany ask: Why Do Some Black People Feel Like “White is Right”? In too many folks' eyes, a thing ain’t good until it’s been adopted by mainstream (white) culture. The same news story that makes waves on CNN falls flat on BET. The same person buying a fancy sweater from Ralph Lauren will scoff at House of Gray. Black folks are not immune to this, those who automatically trust a white doctor (or other specialist) over a Black one, for example. This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum talk about Black elitism and Black owned brands with the owner of Actively Black, Lanny Smith. You might’ve seen Lanny Smith’s viral posts recently where he addresses the controversy around Ralph Lauren’s new “Oak Bluffs” line of apparel. Oak Bluffs, a town on Martha’s Vineyard, has been a gathering place for the Black community for more than 100 years. Folks have called the clothing line “elitist;” the jackets and blazers cost well over $500. Should we denounce this celebration of Black culture just for being elitist? Maybe, maybe not. More importantly, we do not need white businesses to validate Black culture. The Black community spends 10’s of billions of dollars on apparel every year, and just a fraction of that goes back to the Black community, even though WE are the source of so much American style. Let’s talk about how we change THAT. Plus, what is happening in Gaza right now is beyond horrific. We have to spend a little time updating y’all on the situation, Gazans are starving to death. Ever wondered about the real story behind a bottle of tequila? It's not just about agave and distilling; it's a dramatic saga of revolution, political betrayal, and intense family rivalries. In this episode, we're joined by author Ted Genoways to uncover the incredible history of Jose Cuervo, a story that is far more turbulent and cinematic than you can imagine. We'll explore how one man's ambition to build a business empire became entangled in a bloody struggle for the very spirit of Mexico.Join us as we dive deep into the subjects of Ted Genoways' groundbreaking book, "Tequila Wars." Discover how the tequila industry wasn't just a bystander but a central player in Mexico's national conflicts. We explore the bitter Cuervo and Sauza family rivalry, a competition that shaped not only the business but also the political landscape of Jalisco. Learn about the Porfirio Diaz tequila industry connection, where Cuervo's own uncle, Florentino Cuervo, was a key figure in the revolution that brought Diaz to power, only to be betrayed later. This complex saga reveals how these families navigated shifting allegiances and constant violence during the tumultuous era of tequila and the Mexican Revolution. From militia leaders running distilleries to the struggle to build modern infrastructure like railroads amidst national chaos, this conversation uncovers a lost chapter of history. This episode peels back the label to reveal the true story behind one of the world's most famous spirits. We discuss how Jose Cuervo's project to rebuild his family's empire was a narrative of genius and resilience, culminating at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, a pivotal moment that forced the industry to modernize. Yet, just as Cuervo built the infrastructure for a global business, the revolution erupted, forcing distilleries to close and pitting figures like Pancho Villa against American interests right on the distribution lines. The full history of Jose Cuervo is a tale of how a regional spirit survived near-constant warfare to become a national symbol, ironically aided by the era of Prohibition in the United States. Don't miss this fascinating discussion about Ted Genoways Tequila Wars, a story waiting to be told.About Our Guest:Ted Genoways is an acclaimed author and journalist. His book, "Tequila Wars: Jose Cuervo, and the Bloody Struggle for the Spirit of Mexico," is the result of years of deep investigation into a history that many believed was lost forever. Sparked by family stories from his father, a bat biologist who worked in the agave fields of Jalisco, Ted embarked on a journey to uncover the archives and family secrets of the tequila titans, revealing their central role in the shaping of modern Mexico.Timestamps / Chapters:(00:00) The Secret History of Tequila(02:52) The Real "Tequila Wars": More Than Just Business(04:53) From Family Stories to a Historical Epic(12:05) The Cuervo and Sauza Rivalry: A Battle for Tequila's Soul(16:55) The Porfirio Diaz Era: Tequila's Role in National Politics(22:37) Uncovering Lost History: The Challenge of Research(26:59) How Railroads Became Critical for Tequila's Expansion(34:41) Surviving the Mexican Revolution and Pancho Villa(38:59) How the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair Modernized Tequila(44:59) Will "Tequila Wars" Become a Movie or TV Series?

This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum grapple with the proposed federal budget. Trump’s “big beautiful” budget is poised to be the largest cut to the social safety net in generations, and the largest transfer of wealth from low income to high income Americans EVER. Millions of Americans will lose health coverage and access to SNAP or food stamps. Countless other federal programs are being cut while the budget for the military and mass deportation adds hundreds of billions of dollars, and tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans are extended. How do we respond? Funding for research, especially medical research into diseases like Sickle Cell that disproportionately affect the Black community, has already faced cuts. The Trump administration continues to end programs that could be construed as “DEI,” which in effect is any program aimed at helping the Black community. The verdict is in for Sean “Diddy” Combs and it seems like the prosecution over reached. He was accused of and charged with some heinous acts for sure. Power Outages. Natural Disasters. Political Collapse. Here’s How We Stay Ready. This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum address the most vital topic of all: survival. The Iran-Israel conflict has a lot of us thinking about nuclear war–although it doesn’t necessarily take a war for society to collapse. Sharon Ross, AKA Ms. Afrovivalist, is a survivalist, a huntress, and a “prepper.” The logic of preparing for societal collapse feels more, well, logical than ever before. Sharon tells us why she moved into the wilderness and shares some basic survival tips for us normies. Check her out at https://www.afrovivalist.com/ or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Afrovivalists The victory of Zohran Mamdani, a self-described “democratic socialist,” in NYC’s primary for Mayor may herald a new era for the Democrats. He won by a surprisingly large margin, winning over many Black voters who had previously supported his opponent, Cuomo. As the Democrats search for a way forward after a devastating defeat in 2024, will Mamdani’s victory pull them toward a more populist, socialist platform? And of course we’ll hear from you! Escalation with Iran raises alarms, but don't worry, Black women will save us... This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum ask: are we all gonna die??!? Seriously though, President Trump and the U.S.A. are likely to join Israel in their air attacks on Iran. What are the potential consequences of a direct war with Iran? Is this Iraq 2.0? Or something new, perhaps the beginning of WWIII?? Our hosts separate the facts from the nunsense. We’re also going to look at a brand new poll capturing the priorities and lived experiences of Black women voters all across the country. Our guests today, Gabrielle Wyatt and Cornell Belcher, help us sift through this new data that points to long term solutions for issues facing the Black community, and dispells some common misconceptions about Black voters. AND FAMU’s board of directors is making their final vote for president soon and it’s looking like MAGA Marva will get it. Did Elon Musk just revive the ‘stolen election’ conspiracy? Two of y'all sent in questions about a recent tweet of Elon Musk's where he says, "Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate... Such ingratitude." The tweet fanned the flames of a conspiracy theory claiming that Musk hacked the voting machines or influenced the election illicitly (beyond the hundreds of millions of dollars that he legally dumped into Trump's campaign). Hosts Angela Rye and Andrew Gillum take a peak at the Musk-election fraud conspiracy theory and chat about their views on conspiracy theories more broadly. This week hosts Angela Rye and Andrew Gillum discuss the ICE raids and unrest in Los Angeles with L.A. Mayor Karen Bass. Tiffany Cross is out sick this week. We have all seen the sensational images from the protests and unrest in L.A. following last Friday’s ICE raids. The ICE raids targeted immigrants at their workplaces, including Home Depot and a clothing store. Since then, the National Guard has been called up by President Trump to quell what he’s calling an “insurrection.” The use of that word, “insurrection,” is highly intentional, as is the effort by Trump and rightwing media to paint L.A. as a chaotic, lawless place. Trump is ratcheting up his mass deportation plans and Mayor Bass says that Los Angeles is the testing ground. The unrest in L.A. dovetails into an ongoing conversation we’ve been having with you, our audience. We’ll be joined by executive director of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI), Attorney Nana Gyamfi. BAJI advocates for the nearly 10 million Black immigrants, refugees, and families living in the U.S. As BAJI’s director, Nana will respond to some of YOUR comments critiquing our hosts’ support of migrant communities. Nana Gyamfi brings with her over three decades of service to the Movement for Black liberation, and over twenty years experience directing Black social justice organizations and networks. She is a human rights and criminal defense attorney, a professor in the Pan African Studies Department at the California State University Los Angeles, and a radio personality. Every month since October of 2022, Reverend Dr. Robert Turner has been walking from his home city of Baltimore to the White House, a journey he’s dubbed #40MilesFor40Acres. Whether rain, shine, alone, or with fellow advocates–Turner has been making the journey for nearly three years now. Angela Rye talks with him about his experiences and the success he’s had. PLUS, the Reverend Dr. recently added a stop on the march: the National Museum of African American History and Culture (The Blacksonian). The museum has come under attack from Trump for its “divisive, race-centered” exhibits that disparage the nation’s history. Imagine that! State of the People is coming to Baltimore on Juneteenth for The National Assembly. SOTP brings together organizers, cultural leaders, policy advocates, artists, and community members to co-create a vision for our future. Join us, it’s free and there will be food!
