FAR AWAY FROM the Beaver State, in the backcountry of West Virginia by the Kentucky border, a man named Floyd Hatfield was the proud owner of a fine razorback hog. A distant neighbor, from across the Tug River on the Kentucky side, saw the hog one day, and claimed the hog was really his. He could tell, he said, by the distinctive notches in the hog's ear. Hatfield was enraged; the neighbor was basically calling him a thief, an insult that was, in the heart of Appalachia just after the Civil War, not to be borne. The neighbor took Hatfield to court, suing for the return of the hog, and lost. But the Justice of the Peace was Anderson Hatfield, a relative of Floyd, and the neighbor was convinced the fix was in. Now the neighbor was enraged too. That was in late 1878, and the dispute over the allegedly stolen hog blossomed out over the following 12 years into the most notorious family feud in U.S. history. The neighbor, as you have probably guessed by now, was named McCoy — Randolph McCoy. The Hatfield-McCoy feud ended with more than a dozen members of both families being measured for coffins, and a decade or so of prosecutions for murder. The stakes in the Lincoln City-Great Falls, Mont., feud, if it can be called that, are a lot less serious. In fact, the whole situation is the kind of thing that's just fun and funny. But the parallels are striking, and — now that nearly 150 years has passed since the last Hatfield-McCoy blood was spilled — amusing.... (NOTE: This episode is being posted two days early just in case we lose connectivity in the forecasted thunder/hailstorm later today.) Today, as travelers outside the Beaver State's borders know well, Oregon's roads are merely average, or maybe slightly above average, in terms of crowdedness and quality. Certainly other states tend to have more and wider interstate freeways. But you don't have to go too far back into the past to find a time when Oregon's highway system was something rather special. It's a legacy that goes all the way back to the dawn of motoring; when the Good Roads movement got started, it really took off in Oregon, starting in the early 1910s with the nationally famous Columbia Gorge Highway. But the true reason for the lion's share of Oregon's transformation into a midcentury motorist's paradise is much more prosaic: Our state was the first in the nation to levy a gasoline tax to fund its highway system. Also bitte einsteigen bei Susanne Schmitt!

ONE OF THE real privileges of being a lifelong Oregonian of a certain, er, vintage, is the opportunity to have seen this state in its golden age — roughly, 1946 through 1980 — through a child's eyes. The basic style and culture of the Beaver State have changed a lot over the last 50 years. And, for the most part, it's changed for the better ... but not entirely. Sociologists would say this change was the transition from a “modernist” culture — proud, conformist, and optimistic about the future — to a “postmodernist” culture — self-critical, eclectic, and neutral or pessimistic about the future. In this episode, we're venturing into the misty, mysterious landscapes of Oregon, a state where legends of haunted coastlines, old mining towns, and historic theaters paint a chilling picture of its past. Oregon's rich Native American heritage, combined with its wild and rugged history, has given rise to some of the most spine-tingling ghost stories in the Pacific Northwest. From lighthouses perched on jagged cliffs to underground tunnels that tell tales of old maritime crimes, Oregon's supernatural secrets have been whispered about for generations. We're uncovering five of the most haunted locations in the Beaver State, each with its own tragic stories and ghostly inhabitants that continue to capture the imagination. Featured Locations: Heceta Head Lighthouse 92072 US-101, Florence, OR 97439 Beyond the legend of Rue, there are tales of a ghostly cat that has been spotted roaming the lighthouse keeper's house. Some visitors claim they've heard the cat purring or seen it dart past their feet, only to find no animal in sight. The bed-and-breakfast often receives guests specifically hoping to encounter Rue or her feline companion, making it a destination for paranormal enthusiasts and ghost hunters alike. The Geiser Grand Hotel 1996 Main St, Baker City, OR 97814 In addition to Maybelle Geiser, guests often report seeing orbs and strange light anomalies near the hotel's mirrors. The headless chef has become a particularly chilling sight for those who have ventured into the hotel's basement. Many guests feel a sudden chill as they pass the spot where he is said to linger. The hotel holds ghost tours, inviting guests to learn more about these spectral residents and perhaps even encounter them firsthand. Pittock Mansion 3229 NW Pittock Dr, Portland, OR 97210 Some visitors have claimed to catch glimpses of Henry Pittock gazing out over Portland from the mansion's iconic balcony, particularly on foggy mornings. In the grand dining room, guests report the distinct scent of Georgiana's favorite perfume lingering in the air. The mansion's antique clock is said to mysteriously chime at odd hours, even when it's not wound—a lingering sign that the Pittocks may still be watching over their beloved home. McMenamins Edgefield 2126 SW Halsey St, Troutdale, OR 97060 In addition to the activity in Room 215, Edgefield is known for its haunted gardens, where ghostly figures are often seen tending to the plants. Guests have also reported hearing phantom laughter near the old ballroom and the sound of footsteps on the staircase leading to the upper floors. Edgefield's haunted reputation has made it a popular site for paranormal events, attracting ghost hunters and curious visitors from far and wide. The Shanghai Tunnels Old Town, Portland, OR Visitors to the tunnels often describe feeling a heavy, oppressive atmosphere, especially near the hidden cells where kidnapped victims were once held. Some have even reported hearing the clinking of chains and the cries of those who were forced into lives of servitude. Paranormal investigators who have ventured into the tunnels have recorded eerie EVPs, with voices whispering phrases like, “Help me,” and “Let me out.” The Witch's Castle Forest Park, Portland, OR Visitors exploring the ruins have reported seeing strange symbols carved into the stones, which seem to change or disappear entirely upon closer inspection. The legend of Danford Balch's ghost is only part of the mystery here; locals also speak of eerie lights flickering among the trees and shadowy figures moving through the forest. The Witch's Castle is a popular destination for thrill-seekers who are drawn to its sinister atmosphere and haunting legends. Hot Lake Hotel 66172 OR-203, La Grande, OR 97850 Beyond the nurse apparition, visitors have reported hearing the faint strains of old-timey music playing in the hallways, as if from a long-lost gramophone. The old bathhouse, where patients once soaked in the hot springs, is particularly chilling, with guests often feeling sudden cold spots despite the warm waters. The hotel hosts regular paranormal investigations, inviting those brave enough to explore its eerie, history-laden rooms. Old Wheeler Hotel 495 US-101, Wheeler, OR 97147 Guests staying on the third floor often report seeing ghostly figures reflected in mirrors that vanish when they turn around. The smell of lavender, believed to be the favorite scent of a former owner, sometimes wafts through the rooms unexpectedly. The hotel is a beloved destination for both ghost hunters and tourists who appreciate its vintage charm and spectral residents. The Oregon Caves Chateau 20000 Caves Hwy, Cave Junction, OR 97523 Beyond the mysterious woman, guests have heard the echoes of faint laughter and the clinking of silverware in the dining room long after it has closed for the night. The caves themselves, just a short distance from the chateau, are said to be haunted by the spirits of indigenous people who once used the area for sacred ceremonies. The combination of natural beauty and ghostly lore draws visitors who want a taste of both adventure and the paranormal. The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse 750 NW Lighthouse Dr, Newport, OR 97365 Additional reports from the lighthouse include ghostly whispers that seem to drift on the wind, as well as the scent of sea salt and old wood, lingering in the air. Some visitors claim to feel a sudden chill when they reach the lighthouse's top floor, where the young girl's ghost is said to appear. The lighthouse remains open to the public, with tours that delve into its storied past and the lingering spirits that may still call it home. The Heritage Foundation annually releases an Education Freedom Report Card, which analyzes and ranks all 50 states and the District of Columbia according to factors related to school choice, academic transparency, regulatory freedom, and education spending. The report seeks to assess what each state does well, identify where it can improve, and help policymakers achieve real reforms. This year, Florida and Arizona again take first and second place. Both states have long been pioneers in broadly expanding students' educational opportunities. Louisiana, West Virginia, and Wyoming made notable improvements, due to new Education Savings Account laws. Unfortunately, Oregon still ranks at or near the bottom in all categories: 51st overall, 47th in education choice, 35th in return on investment, and 31st in academic transparency. Oregon is also 50th in “teacher freedom.” The report explains: “Zero percent of teachers are alternatively certified, largely required to go through university-based colleges of education in order to enter the K-12 classroom. The Beaver State does not have full reciprocity of teacher licensure with other states.” Oregon could improve its education freedom ranking by enacting an Education Savings Account program, making it easier for charter schools to open and operate, expanding families' choices among traditional public schools, and reforming licensure so more good teachers can teach in Oregon. These goals should be at the top of Oregon policymakers' education reform agendas.

How else would you explain their slogan: “You will own nothing and learn to like it“?m This mantra is playing out in real time in the state of Oregon, and other states, in various forms which we will get into in this article. Small farmers are under attack in the Beaver State, which has begun shutting down family farms throughout the state under the guise of water conservation and groundwater protection. The owner of Yanasa Ama Ranch shared a 20-minute video explaining what is going on in Oregon as bureaucrats erroneously classify small family farms and homesteads as “concentrated animal feeding operations,” or CAFOs, in order to shut them down. Any feeding area that has a concrete, rock or gravel floor falls into this category, which would include most small dairy or egg farms. If you have two or three milking cows, the rancher explains, you are now targeted by the state for closure. The rancher further explains in the video: “The state of Oregon has effectively shut down small farms and market gardens on a large scale, and they're actually sending out cease-and-desist letters to farms and they're using satellite technology to find their victims and send them these letters that say you can't operate.”  . Over the past twelve months, the ARS value against the US dollar has plummeted, dropping from 0.0049 USD per ARS in March 2023 to 0.0012 USD at the time of publication. However, it was noted that Lemon wasn't the only platform seeing a surge in demand. Other major exchanges in Argentina, such as Ripio and Belo, reported similar trends. AT THE TIME of this writing, the Christmas shopping season is just starting to spool up, and folks are getting ready for some serious holiday eating. Most likely, that festive feasting won't include many of the things on this list. Although inventors from the Beaver State have had a big impact at the grocery store, most of what they've created would be a bit out of place at a Christmas dinner. The big exceptions are the products created by scientists at Oregon State University: Marionberries for pie, and modern-process Maraschino cherries for holiday punchbowls.... The needs of humans and the needs of the wildlife that surround us are intensifying. Habitat loss and fragmentation due to human development keep wildlife from finding food, water and shelter. These factors also make adhering to daily, seasonal and life history needs extra challenging and inhibit migratory movements, like moving to and from foraging areas and breeding sites. Dr. Rachel Wheat has been working on the Oregon Wildlife Connectivity Plan, an effort to better understand wildlife connectivity in Oregon. The goal of the plan is to evaluate and map out existing landscape-level connectivity for 54 species that represent a wide range of wildlife species, their habitats and life history strategies and movement capabilities. This information will better inform Oregonians about the needs of wildlife even as we go about fulfilling our own needs. Dr. Wheat talked to Tim Akimoff and Beth Quillian about the project for this week's Beaver State Podcast.

IF YOU ASK most Oregonians who the first woman governor in state history was, they'll have an immediate answer … but they'll be wrong. Conventional wisdom holds that the first woman to take the gubernatorial purple in the Beaver State was Barbara Roberts, who was elected to the job in 1990. In fact, that's almost true … but, of course, “almost” doesn't work very well as an answer to a true-or-false question. The truth is, Barbara Roberts was the first elected woman governor in Oregon history. But the first woman to serve as governor of Oregon — or any other state, for that matter — was a remarkable woman named Caralyn B. Shelton. It was because of Caralyn Shelton that Oregon, for one historic weekend in early 1909, became the first and only state in the nation with a female governor. This was especially ironic because it wasn't until 1912 that women won the right to vote in Oregon. Welcome to March 8th, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate our 33rd State and great women in history. Marlo, did you know that Oregon residents own one quarter of the entire country's Llama population? Or how about this? Springfield, Oregon is the real life inspiration for the Simpson's hometown! Matt Groening, the Simpson's creator, is from Portland, Oregon and many of the Simpson's characters are named for Portland streets such as Flanders. Here's a good one; Portland was named by a coin flip! You can even see the coin at the Oregon Historical Society. On National Oregon Day, we salute The Beaver State. Not all women are famous for both beauty and brains but Austrian born, Heddy Lamar had both. While Hollywood honored her film career with a star on the Walk of Fame in 1960, she was also known for her work as an inventor. At the start of World War II Heddy and composer George Antheil developed a radio guidance system that armed Allied torpedoes with anti jamming capability. The principles of their work were eventually used in creating GPS and Bluetooth technology, and Lamar was later inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014. On International Women's Day, we honor women around the world who make their mark by making history right where they stand.  I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day. Mayorkas Texas Republican Rep. Pat Fallon has filed impeachment articles against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, delivering on a promise he made last week before the 118th Congress was officially sworn in. The articles of impeachment against Mayorkas for "high crimes and misdemeanors," known as House Resolution 8, were introduced by Fallon in the House on Monday and have been referred to the House Judiciary Committee. Last week, Fallon vowed to file impeachment articles against Mayorkas after the Congress was sworn in. The effort from Republicans in the House is one of many that the new GOP majority will take as it works to fight the Biden administration on issues related to immigration and the southern border crisis. While there is currently no text available for the impeachment articles filed against Mayorkas, Fox News reported last week that Fallon's first article alleges that Mayorkas has failed to faithfully execute the "Secure the Fence Act of 2006." The article says that law requires the secretary of Homeland Security to "maintain operational control over the entire international land and maritime borders of the United States." The second article alleges that Mayorkas, "in violation of his constitutional oath, willfully provided perjurious, false, and misleading testimony to Congress." To back up that charge, the article quotes Mayorkas' testimony during April 26 and Nov. 15 congressional hearings in which he said the border was secure. The final of the three articles charges that Mayorkas "publicly and falsely slandered" border agents who were accused – but later cleared – of whipping Haitian migrants in Del Rio, Texas, in 2021. Mayorkas on Sunday said he will not resign over his handling of the border crisis and insisted he will be ready for future investigations by House Republicans while continuing to fulfill his daily responsibilities. https://dailycaller.com/2023/01/10/kevin-mccarthy-adam-schiff-eric-swalwell-ilhan-omar-committees/ Reps. Adam Schiff, Eric Swalwell, Ilhan Omar To Officially Be Kicked Off Intelligence, Foreign Affairs Committees Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy confirmed Monday night that Democratic California Reps. Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell will be removed from the House Intelligence Committee and the House will vote on the removal of Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee. In February, McCarthy told the Daily Caller that if he is elected Speaker that he intends to strip Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee and Swalwell and Schiff from the Intelligence Committee. On Monday, McCarthy confirmed to The Associated Press (AP) that he would be moving forward with that decision, saying both Swalwell and Schiff should not have seats on the committee. McCarthy has said Swalwell’s reported relationship with a Chinese spy and Schiff’s defense of the Steele dossier are some of the reasons they should be removed from the committee. McCarthy has said Omar’s anti-Semitism is a reason she should be removed from Foreign Affairs. “Swalwell can’t get a security clearance in the private sector. I’m not going to give him a government security clearance. Schiff has lied to the American public…,” McCarthy told The AP. The Daily Caller contacted Swalwell, Schiff, and Omar’s offices about McCarthy’s decision to move forward and have them removed from committee assignments to which they did not immediately respond. https://thepostmillennial.com/breaking-andrew-tate-to-remain-in-romanian-jail-after-losing-appeal?utm_campaign=64487 Andrew Tate to remain in Romanian jail after losing appeal Former kickboxer and controversial social media personality Andrew Tate lost his appeal against not being held for 30 days at a Romanian detention center. Andrew, along with his brother Tristan, were detained last month pending a criminal investigation into alleged human trafficking and organizing a crime group. A document from the judge who instated the 30-day detention wrote that "the possibility of them evading investigations cannot be ignored" and the suspects could "leave Romania and settle in countries that do not allow extradition," reports Mirror. "In this sense, I would like to point out, at least from this point of view, I am also somehow amazed, there is not a single piece of evidence apart from the victim's statement that leads to the idea that a crime of rape was committed. In my view, there is no evidence to the formation of an opinion of reasonable suspicion regarding the commission of offenses provided for and punishable by criminal law. In this case we are talking about human trafficking and organized crime," said the Tate brothers' lawyer Eugen Vidineac. https://thepostmillennial.com/oregon-pledges-to-affirm-sex-changes-for-kids-as-reading-proficiency-plummets?utm_campaign=64487 Oregon pledges to affirm sex changes for kids as reading proficiency plummets On Thursday, the Oregon Department of Education released guidance for schools to better support "Gender Expansive Students" that include bathroom and pronoun policies aligned with radical gender ideology and include links for minors to seek "gender-affirming healthcare" LibsofTikTok posted "Oregon Dept of Education released new guidelines on affirming LGBTQ+ students. They promote the use of pronouns, using bathrooms based on gender identity, and support 'gender affirming care' for minors. It also provides links to kids with info on 'tucking' & 'chest binding'." Oregon Department of Education Director Colt Gill said, "It is our responsibility to move beyond mere tolerance and inclusion toward respectful, affirming, and celebratory school communities where all students belong and succeed." The new guidance comes as a growing number of Oregon students are falling behind in their reading proficiency. According to Oregon Live, "A staggering 61 percent of third graders and 54 percent of seventh graders aren’t fully proficient at reading, including 30 percent of seventh-graders found to be substantially below grade level" in the Beaver State. The measures of success according to the guidance include telling students, "You have the ability to change your first name in your school record and student information system, without legal documentation" and "You have the ability to change your sex/gender marker in your school record and student information system." "You have the ability to use school restrooms and changing rooms that align with your gender identity or safety needs," according to the guidance. The guidance also includes informing students they can "date who you want, if you want" and can form student groups focused on LGBTQ2SIA+. The plan offers textbooks and guidance to students so they can learn "inclusive and affirming information about the LGBTQ2SIA+" community and inform the students they can participate in "sports, PE, and school activities according to your gender identity." "If you are 15 or older, you have the ability to seek gender-affirming healthcare from an Oregon medical provider," according to the list of resources, which also remind students they can seek mental health resources if they are 14 or over and get birth control if they are "any age." The guidance provides a detailed list instructing students where they can receive "gender affirming care" that includes details on "tucking" and "chest binding." The recent guidance release is part of Oregon's larger LGBTQ2SIA+ Student Success Plan that was developed in 2020 "amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic."
