Gen Z Responds to Roland’s Black Bank of Justice Pt. 1 This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum host a cross-generational discussion with three politically active youths. Our young guests respond to Roland Martin’s statement from last week’s show that young folks are withdrawing from the Black bank of justice without making their own deposits. Our guests provide an alternative perspective to Roland’s–a perspective that our hosts will (politely) challenge. OUR GUESTS: Victoria Pannell is an organizer with Until Freedom and Social Impact Advisor with We Inspire Justice. Ty Hobson-Powell led the “51 For 51” Washington D.C. statehood campaign and founded Concerned Citizens Demanding Change. In 2024, he managed the Mail-In Ballot Processing Division for D.C.’s Board of Elections. He’s been appointed State Political Program Director in Mississippi, supporting a major voter engagement initiative with Mississippi Votes. His upcoming book, The Fire Right Now—a nod to James Baldwin—is slated for release this summer. Marley Dias is a celebrated changemaker and one of the youngest people to appear on Forbes 30 Under 30. She launched #1000BlackGirlBooks, collecting over 15,000 books featuring Black girl protagonists. A junior at Harvard, Marley is also the host and executive producer of Netflix’s Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices. And of course we’ll hear from you! Governor Whitmer on Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist AND her visit with Trump. This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum are joined by the Governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer. Governor Whitmer’s term is almost over and the race to succeed her is on. Notably, she has not endorsed her Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist (nor anyone else). Lt. Gov Gilchrist is a friend of the show and the Black community, and so the hosts must ask: what gives? PLUS Governor Whitmer has said she’s open to working with Trump and she was even spotted recently at the White House in a somewhat embarrassing photo. We’ll get to the bottom of her controversial decision to meet with the president; was the meeting productive or was she just used as a photo-op prop? And of course we’ll hear from you! Angela Rye went LIVE to breakdown the new deportation regime under our facist-in-chief, President Trump. The Trump administration has issued a deportation notice to an immigration attorney who is a full U.S. citizen. They said it was an accident but Trump is openly saying he’d like to deport U.S. citizens to El Salavadorean concentration camps with no due process. Want to ask Angela a question? Andrew Gillum goes LIVE with Gen Z organizer Deyona Burton who shares her insight into how self-care and activism go hand in hand. Burton first made waves in 2020 when she led the effort to change the name of her Florida highschool from “Robert E. Lee” to “Riverside” High. Then, while attending FSU, Deyona Burton rose to national prominence as the Director of Programs for College Democrats of America. Her accolades include being honored at the White House, an impactful TEDx talk, earning the President’s Volunteer Service Award, and being named the 2024 National Action Network’s MLK Youth Honoree. Having contributed to campaigns and worked within offices at local, state, and national levels, Deyona now continues her mission to drive change from Washington, D.C. This week hosts Tiffany Cross and Angela Rye are joined by special guest-host: Roland S Martin (of Roland Martin Unfiltered). Roland is one of the most vital sources of independent news for the Black community; his YouTube channel @rolandsmartin has 1.8 million subscribers and counting. Today’s show kicks off with Trump’s attacks on the Blacksonian (National Museum of African American History) and the massive protests against him over the weekend. A lot of folks are complaining about the Trump administration but we don’t see enough doing; Roland says younger generations are “withdrawing from the bank of justice” without making any deposits. How do we help Black folks battle the apathy and feel their agency? Tariffs–tariffs for everyone! Or not? Let’s be 100% clear y’all: tariffs are a tax that WE will pay. Our hosts explain how tariffs work, why they were put in place, and who benefits (SPOILER ALERT: it’s not us). Male enrollment at HBCUs is hitting historical lows, mirroring attendance at colleges nationwide. This represents a failure to engage men in the educational process that starts well before college. The hosts discuss causes, impacts, and potential solutions. Host Andrew Gillum is out this week. He’s on a field trip with the kids to NASA. Have fun Andrew! And of course we’ll hear from you! The Trump administration has issued an executive order to remove Black history from the Smithsonian. It targets “woke ideology,” the trans-Atlantic slave trade, and anything else that might make white folks uncomfortable. Yes, we know that LOTS of TRUE history makes white folks uncomfortable. But Trump has more to gain by this Soviet-style erasure than just avoiding scary feelings… Angela Rye goes LIVE to breakdown Trump’s latest Executive Order, “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.” Want to ask Angela a question? Hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Tiffany Cross, along with guest-host Elie Mystal, respond to a provocative listener question submitted by Dr. B.J. Brunious. Dr. Brunious saw last week’s episode and, as a Black gay man, was TRIGGERED. He doesn’t know anyone who identifies as “gay” before “Black” (as was discussed last week). He asks how it came to be that some Black folk think that one group’s gains (hispanics, LGBTQ, etc.) mean the Black community’s loss? Isn’t this the same logic used by white people AGAINST the Black community all the time? This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, AND guest-host Elie Mystal celebrate Senator Cory Booker for his 25-hour (!) protest speech. Booker set the record for the longest speech in Congress EVER. Our guest-host Elie Mystal is the justice correspondent for The Nation, where he writes radical truths about our flawed justice system. This former attorney turned thought leader is one of the most hilarious, well-spoken, and pointed progressive voices out there–if you don’t know him, get to! He’s just released a new book, Bad Law: Ten Popular Laws That Are Ruining America. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson is having a temper tantrum; he has cancelled ALL votes on the House floor after he failed to quash a bipartisan bill that would allow new parents in Congress to vote remotely. GOD FORBID Congress make allowances for new mothers. Was the Supreme Court decision that mandated integration a mistake?? Our hosts take a fresh look at Brown v. Board of Education with Elie Mystal and discuss movement building in the Democratic party. Elie explains how a shared history of racist laws and practices shapes this moment, how the left can (and should) adopt certain strategies from the right, and how to find hope even in the darkest times. Elon Musk was the largest donor in the 2024 presidential election–and now he’s setting himself up to be the main financier of MAGA candidates. Host Angela Rye takes us to a race in Wisconsin for a Supreme Court seat, where Musk is bribing voters and handing out million-dollar checks in unhinged (and possibly illegal) publicity stunts. Meanwhile, in Louisiana, Curtis James Jackson (AKA 50 Cent) dropped a video where he endorsed an amendment to the state’s constitution that would have significantly lowered the income tax for the wealthiest people in the state (such as himself). Despite the deceptive nature of some of these amendments and their deliberately misleading names, voters showed up to hand MAGA the L. Want to ask Angela a question? Part 2 looks at the Black community's approval of Trump and the Democratic party. New data (brought to us by our guest and President of HIT Strategies Terrance Woodbury) shows the Democratic party losing support from what has historically been its most reliable voting base: Black folks. Meanwhile, Trump’s approval has doubled since 2017. What gives? And where do we go from here? Civil rights advocate Gary Chambers has some answers, as do our hosts Angela Rye, Tiffany Cross, and Andrew Gillum. The results are in: do Black men & women see politics the same way? This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum just have one thing to say: the numbers don’t lie–we finally got a poll of Black People y’all!! With guests Terrance Woodbury, Democratic pollster, and Gary Chambers, civil rights advocate and perennial candidate (you might remember his blunt-smoking campaign ad). One thing the data makes plain: there is a significant difference of values between many Black men and Black women. In a conversation that at times becomes heated, the hosts discuss those differences with their guests. How many Black folks voted this last election? What motivates people to go to vote OR not? How can Democrats adjust their strategy and messaging to appeal to the (often disillusioned) Black community? President of HIT Strategies Terrance Woodbury has been conducting the polls and has some crucial answers. AND we have to cover Trump’s recent executive order that gives the federal government more control over voting registration. If it clears legal challenges, the changes will make it more difficult to register to vote, a classic GOP voter suppression strategy. And of course we’ll hear from you! GOP wants to secure America but can’t even secure the group chat. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is in HOT water after accidentally texting war plans to a journalist from The Atlantic. Two other high level Trump appointees, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and CIA Director John Ratcliffe, were on the same text thread and just got GRILLED by Congress for their involvement. In the upside-down world of rightwing media they’re pretending like the highest ranking military leader (besides the president himself) accidentally sending war plans to members of the public is no big deal. This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum talk about the single most powerful force in Washington DC: the special interests. Why is it that our political leaders so often act in opposition to the will of the voters? There is an industry of lobbyists and special interest groups that donate unlimited amounts of money (thanks Citizens United) to fund our politicians' campaigns, gain access to their offices, and influence their decision making. On today’s episode our hosts de-mystify the D.C. machine–who do our politicians REALLY work for? We’re looking at you, BlackRock. Check out who donates to YOUR representatives at www.opensecrets.org/ Speaking of the influence of special interests, Palestinian Mahmoud Khalil has been separated from his family and jailed for protesting the war in Gaza while he was a graduate student at Columbia University. Racism, Race-baiting, and Why Is It All About Race Anyway? Our hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Tiffany cross weigh the age-old question: can Black people be racist? Shutdown or Shut Up: Why Won’t Dems Fall in Line? Reflecting on Bloody Sunday This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum have a call to action: fast from Target. Pastor Jamal Bryant has called for a fast of Target stores, a 40 day boycott that started on March 6th. The company has rolled back DEI initiatives despite being one of the largest employers of Black Americans. Our hosts check on the progress of the fast and discuss how to minimize harm. A government shutdown is looming, funding runs out at midnight this Friday unless Congress can pass a new budget. Republicans want to pass a stop-gap measure called a “continuing resolution,” a slimmed down version of the current budget that would put off decisions on a new budget until the Fall. They need Democratic votes to get it through the Senate. Is there any reason Democrats should comply? While the new Education Secretary Linda McMahon lays off 50% of the Department of Education’s workforce, Trump sends threatening letters to universities. Citing civil rights laws, the Trump admin says it will pull federal funding from schools that allow pro-Palestinian protests. We’ve just passed the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, when civil rights marchers fighting for the right to vote were attacked by police while peacefully marching across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. The Forming of the Revolution was Televised! The Opposition Gets in Formation at SOTU This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum offer some counter programming to Trump’s “State of the Union” address. On the same days as the speech, Angela Rye along with Joy Reid and others gathered an incredible lineup of Black leaders for a 24 hour livestream, dubbing it The State of the People. Rather than responding to the propaganda, this prolific gathering offered an alternative path forward, choosing to see this moment as an opportunity, not just a setback. Get inspired and energized, watch the full stream on NLP’s YouTube channel and at stateofthepeople.media There was some DRAMA during Trump’s SOTU though. Rep. Al Green was escorted out after he brandished his cane and shouted at Trump, and a cohort of Democrats walked out on their own, led mainly by Black Women of the progressive and Black caucases’. We spoke with representatives on their way out, including Maxwell Frost, Ayanna Pressley, Jasmine Crockett, Maxine Waters, and more. Finally, it looks like the Target boycott had a little bit of an effect. According to Similarweb, Target web traffic was down 1.0% to 4.7 million on Feb. 28 compared to the previous Friday's 4.8 million and traffic on the Target app was down 10.9% to 3.5 million users compared to 3.9 million the previous Friday. Instead of watching President Donald Trump's address to a joint session of Congress tonight, a powerful group of civil rights leaders, elected officials, journalists, and advocates launched the inaugural State of the People Livestream. It kicked off at midnight, and this 24-hour marathon is providing a critical alternative to the president's speech, offering what organizers say is a real assessment of the nation's current state. Journalist Joy Reid, in her first appearance since leaving MSNBC, set the tone as the livestream's opening speaker. Over the next 24 hours, influential voices like Stacey Abrams, Ibram X. Kendi, Ben Crump, Tamika Mallory, Angela Rye, and many others will engage in conversations focused on the harmful impact of what they see as the administration's first two months. The event, held on stateofthepeople.media, calls on Congress to reject complicity and urges officials to stand with the people. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Why Cuts to Medicaid & SNAP Will DEVASTATE America. Should Dems Skip the SOTU? This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum brace for the long night (shout out GOT fans). House Republicans passed a budget framework that includes massive cuts to Medicaid and SNAP benefits, plus huge tax breaks for the wealthy. Trump is literally going to war with the poor. It’s not hyperbole to say that millions of American lives are at risk. Meanwhile, big shakeups at MSNBC mean there is even less representation in cable news these days. We grieve the loss of Joy Reid’s show, The ReidOut, and ask: would boycotting cable news be more harmful or helpful? Should Democrats show up to Trump’s State of the Union address? With Trump dismantling our democracy and the GOP pushing for devastating cuts to the social safety net, attending this yearly ceremony may just be a bad look. Lastly: WE WON!! Trump fires top Black general and installs unqualified loyalists to key positions. The end of DEI and the myth of meritocracy. Four-Star General CQ Brown Jr. was the top military officer, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, until he was fired last Friday by president Trump via a social media post. Apparently Brown was too “woke” for the Trump admin–and he just so happens to be Black. THREE-Star LIEUTENANT General Dan Caine has been promoted as Brown’s replacement. Now, why is a less qualified (and retired) general being tapped to replace General Brown in this prestigious position? It couldn’t have anything to do with the fact that he’s white, could it? Using examples, like the recent promotion of MAGA podcaster Dan Bongino, Angela Rye exposes the hypocrisy of MAGA when they promote the end of DEI as the return of “meritocracy.” There will be serious consequences to promoting unqualified individuals to positions of power. Rep. Ayanna Pressley on Reparations and Democratic Party Strategy. Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley does not mince words; if you are not a part of the resistance then you are a part of the problem. In this interview with hosts Angela Rye, Tiffany Cross, and Andrew Gillum, this progressive Democrat outlines her frustrations with her own party and what she believes that fight against Musk and Trump should look like. Part of the fight is not giving up on the Black agenda! Amidst this assault on DEI, Congresswoman Pressley and some of her colleagues have put forward a national reparations bill. With all the litigation attempting to stop Trump, Musk and DOGE–this week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum ask: do these court cases even matter? We like to think that there are three co-equal branches of government, the legislative, the executive, and the judicial. But ith one of his latest executive orders, Trump has made it clear that he believes his word is the law. So even if the Supreme Court rules against him, will he respect that ruling? Elon Musk says that DOGE is going to hand out $5,000 checks to taxpayers after they make huge cuts to the federal government. Is this how Republicans win the messaging war, by cutting us a check while they sell our government for parts? The House is on FIRE! Democrats React to COUP feat. Congressman Frost. This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum address the Trump/Musk power grab, which has swiftly become a constitutional crisis. Joined by Representative Maxwell Frost (Florida-10), the hosts have some tough questions about what Democrats are doing to limit Trump and Musk’s overreach. Why did they let a plain clothed, skinny white man keep them out of the Department of Education?? Congressman Frost, a former activist and first Gen Z congressional representative, thinks he knows EXACTLY what Democrats must do. Why is this a constitutional crisis? Well, in defiance of the congressional “power of the purse,” Elon Musk’s DOGE continues to consolidate power, and in defiance of court orders from the judiciary, Trump’s executive orders (like the federal funding freeze) are in full swing and having real world impact. The executive branch is staging a coup, usurping power from Congress and the courts, and threatening the balance of power that has maintained U.S. democracy for 250 years. Let’s talk about it! This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum are joined by comedian Leslie Jones to answer a question that we’ve been hearing a lot lately: “What do we do?” What do we do in response to a Trump administration that’s upending our government? How the federal funding freeze impacts YOU. In a legally questionable move, President Trump has issued a federal funding freeze on all public loans, grants, and federal assistance programs. $3 trillion dollars were spent on federal assistance programs in 2024, money that helps fund universities, non-profits, small businesses, and local government grants. These programs touch countless American lives. On her first SoloPod, Angela Rye breaks down the far-reaching consequences of the funding freeze, identifying some of the more crucial programs at risk, and the legal challenges to the order itself. Why Nelly and Snoop went to inauguration. Abuse of presidential pardon power, J6ers v. Marilyn. This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum react to Biden’s final days in office and Trump’s first. Former President Biden issued a flurry of last-minute pardons including preemptive pardons for his own family. So he knows how to look out for his own but not our own, got it. We’ll talk about who did NOT get a pardon (Marilyn Mosby)–meanwhile Trump jailbreaks the J6 insurrectionists. Rappers Nelly and Snoop Dogg performed at Trump’s inauguration despite past anti-Trump comments. “It’s not political,” Nelly said. “It’s out of respect for the office.” Is there any benefit for the Black community to engage with the Trump administration or are artists like Nelly and Snoop just being used?
