White-On-White Crime ft. Michael Harriot | Angela Rye SoloPod

On this week’s SoloPod, Angela Rye speaks with Michael Harriot about white-on-white crime. In the last few months we’ve seen Charlie Kirk murdered, children killed at Annunciation Catholic Church, and a Minnesota state lawmaker assassinated by a psycho in a Michael Myers mask. White-on-white crime is upending our politics and making people afraid to gather in public. Enough is enough. Read Michael Harriot’s data-driven piece on who commits the most political violence and hate crimes in the USA: https://www.contrabandcamp.com/p/are-leftists-coming-for-you-heres?r=c0yw&utm_medium=ios&triedRedirect=true When a Black person commits a violent crime it’s often spun to be a reflection on the whole community. Why don’t white folks get the same treatment? Angela asks Michael Harriot, award winning journalist and NY Times best-selling author for his book, Black AF History: The Un-Whitewashed Story of America. Want to ask Angela a question? On this episode of A Pod Named Kickback, Nu' and Jacq dive into the wild mix of headlines and hard truths. First, we break down the killing of Charlie Kirk — from learning who he was, to unpacking his racist legacy, and why not everyone deserves a “rest in peace.” Then we pivot to the real struggles hitting farmers as tariffs and rising costs push them toward bankruptcy, and what that could mean for the rest of us. We also talk Young Thug's public apology, the leaked jail calls, and why sometimes private words shouldn't carry public weight. Plus, is Bud Crawford officially on boxing's Mount Rushmore after beating Canelo? All that, plenty more, and of course the brand-new drop inspired by Thugger himself: “Whoop-Dee-Doo.” Some things just ain't worth stressing — and we're calling it like it is. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

On episode 96 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum take a look at Kamala Harris’ new tell-all memoir, the possibility of a Trump 3rd term, and the extrajudicial killings by the U.S. and Israeli militaries. In Kamala Harris’ new memoir, she speaks candidly about her relationship with Joe Biden, his staff, and the 2024 race for President. She holds nothing back and our hosts speculate her criticism of Biden will NOT be taken lightly by the establishment. Trump has not explicitly said that he’s going to run for a third term, in violation of the 22nd amendment. However, his team is selling “Trump ‘28” hats, and he hasn’t ruled it out. Knowing Trump, why aren’t those in power taking this possibility more seriously? Israel tried to kill Hamas leaders in Doha, Qatar (a close U.S. ally) while those leaders were meeting to discuss a proposed Gaza ceasefire, eliminating the possibility for peace. Meanwhile, the U.S. military blows up a boat in the Caribbean that the Trump administration claimed was running drugs without providing evidence. These extrajudicial killings undermine international law and American prestige. This is not the first time Israel has sabotaged U.S.-led negotiations with airstrikes, eliminating the possibility for peace and straining U.S. relationships with its Mid-East allies. Trump’s stated goal is to crack down on “crime,” homelessness, and teenagers. Our hosts watch some clips and discuss, featuring friends of the show, Ty Hobson-Powell and Elizabeth Booker Houston. Then an update on the redistricting wars with Rep. Veasey (TX-33), Rep. Cleaver (MO-5), and State Rep Jones (TX-147). Texas Governor Abbot has said he will end the special session he called to redraw Texas’ electoral maps, which Texas Democrats fled the state to protest. What happens next? Will the Texas Dems be apprehended by the FBI? Do they have a path to victory in Texas or is the strategy mutually assured destruction (looking at you California)? We get the facts from the source. Did you know that the Democratic Republic of the Congo supplies much of the world’s cobalt, a vital mineral that helps power your smart phone? This week on A Pod Named Kickback, me and Jacq kicked things off with her Jamaican getaway—specifically, our fascination with why Jamaica's KFC is hyped as the best in the world. From crispy chicken to secret seasoning theories, we had questions. We then dove deep into the difference between eudaimonic happiness—that purpose-driven, soul-aligned fulfillment—and hedonic happiness, those quick bursts of pleasure from a drink, smoke, or night out. We broke down why the first one lasts longer and how we can all do a better job chasing it.From there, we got real about Trump's plan to charge D.C. youth as adults starting at 14. While violent crime in my hometown is undeniably up, I questioned what federal control over D.C. would mean for our future—and for the rest of the country. We also took a moment to honor Robert T. Hood, who was tragically killed in Atlanta, sending love to his family while steering clear of the rumor mill. Finally, we gave y'all a peek at what's next—relaunching the Patreon, bringing back Kickback Sports, new segments like That's That with Jacq, and collaborations with other creators. The vibe's different now that it's me and Jack—and the Kickbackers seem to be loving it.Special Note: The audio you're hearing is just a snapshot. On this week’s MiniPod, our hosts Angela Rye and Andrew Gillum gotta talk more about redistricting. Trump is putting pressure on Republican-controlled states to redraw their electoral maps in order to give Republicans more seats in congress, an anti-democratic practice known as gerrymandering. This practice typically undercuts the representation of the Black community and others, reducing political influence on a state and national level. Our hosts dig into the mechanics of how electoral maps are created, what the rules are now, and what they could be. On episode 91, our hosts Angela Rye and Andrew Gillum bring on super-guest and renowned progressive journalist: Mehdi Hasan. Tiffany Cross is away this week but she sent us a report from the ground in the DRC. Mehdi Hasan was featured on a Jubilee debate where he (a proclaimed progressive) debated 20 “far-right” young people. The debate was shocking, participants called themselves fascists, and told Mehdi, a naturalized citizen, to “get out” of the country. Mehdi reflects on the debate, the surprise and trauma of it, and what it says (and doesn’t say) about modern conservatives. In addition, the hosts chat with him about redistricting (see below). Follow Mehdi Hassan’s work at https://zeteo.com/ Gerrymandering, the unfair drawing of electoral maps to benefit one’s own party, has been an issue for decades. Egged on by the Trump administration, we are now on the verge of an all-out gerrymandering war. Redistricting (redrawing maps) normally happens at the end of each decade. Trump demanded that Texas redraw their map now to add more Republican seats and the Texas GOP obliged. In response, Democratic state reps have fled Texas to prevent the new maps from being voted on, and governors of blue states like California and New York have threatened to change their state laws to allow more partisan gerrymandering in favor of Democrats. Tiffany Cross is meeting with the president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Redistricting Showdown You Need to Understand ft. Angela Rye talks with Rep Jones while she is literally on the run. Democratic lawmakers have fled the state in a hail-mary bid to prevent their Republican colleagues from redrawing the Texas election maps to give themselves as many as five additional seats in Congress. The Texas GOP’s plan fits nicely into their larger efforts to disenfranchise Black and Brown voters. You might’ve seen Lanny Smith’s viral posts recently where he addresses the controversy around Ralph Lauren’s new “Oak Bluffs” line of apparel. Oak Bluffs, a town on Martha’s Vineyard, has been a gathering place for the Black community for more than 100 years. Folks have called the clothing line “elitist;” the jackets and blazers cost well over $500. Should we denounce this celebration of Black culture just for being elitist? Maybe, maybe not. More importantly, we do not need white businesses to validate Black culture. The Black community spends 10’s of billions of dollars on apparel every year, and just a fraction of that goes back to the Black community, even though WE are the source of so much American style. The crew reflects on Warner's legacy as a good man, a quiet cultural icon, and why real ones deserve to be mourned loudly, publicly, and with love. Then the convo shifts to the opposite—figures like Hulk Hogan and Neon, who used their platforms to demean Black people and now seek sympathy or silence. Nu keeps it real: if you were a piece of shit in life, don't expect sainthood in death. Just because you shaped a childhood doesn't mean you get a pass. This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum cut through the NOISE. EVERYONE is talking about Jeffrey Epstein’s “client list,” an alleged list of rich and powerful people who molested children trafficked to them by the billionaire, Epstein. Trump’s attorney general, Pam Bondi, seems to have gone back on the Trump campaign’s promise to release the client list. Now, MAGA world is torn. Some are choosing to trust their dear orange leader while others are bucking Trump’s orders to fall in line, and continuing to pursue the release of the list. This is one of the most important political issues to MANY MAGA voters. And that’s the whole point: is this media cycle about Epstein a big distraction? What might it be distracting us from? As we look ahead to the midterms, some Democrats see this rift in MAGA’s base as an opportunity. Our hosts have some words of warning… And of course we’ll hear from you! Angela Rye in conversation with Congresswoman LaMonica McIver. McIver has put forward a resolution in the House honoring the victims of the 1967 Newark Rebellion, which she says the city is “still recovering from.” The congresswoman tells us about her new bill AND some of the impacts she expects from Trump’s budget. Congresswoman McIver is also facing assault charges from Trump’s DOJ tied to an incident at an ICE detention center earlier this year, the same incident that saw Mayor Ras Baraka arrested on charges that were quickly dropped. The Congresswoman says the charges against her are similarly “politically motivated.” Support Rep. This ain't no gender war—it's truth time. Why do women defend wrong behavior when they criticize men for the same thing? This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum cover a VERY important topic: housing and financial literacy. We’re doing some hardcore adulting today y’all. Why is it so hard to buy a home these days? How do we build wealth for a down payment–or anything for that matter? These questions may sound dry but the answers as to how we got into this housing crisis are INVALUABLE. They’ll include some advice and personal stories from our hosts (and guest) on how you can secure your finances and get your life. PLUS stories and tips on how to navigate systemic inequities when it comes to things like securing a loan. Our guest, Elizabeth Booker Houston, is an influencer and political commentator with a Juris Doctorate (scholarly legal mastermind) and a Masters in public health. In 2017, she relocated to Washington, DC to serve in the US Food and Drug Administration. In the years since, she has combined her love of politics, law, science, and comedy into a second career as a political standup comedienne, writer, and content creator. You can find Elizabeth @bookersquared on all platforms. And our hosts answer a couple of fun questions all about TV shows and books submitted by YOU, our audience. This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum grapple with the proposed federal budget. Trump’s “big beautiful” budget is poised to be the largest cut to the social safety net in generations, and the largest transfer of wealth from low income to high income Americans EVER. Millions of Americans will lose health coverage and access to SNAP or food stamps. Countless other federal programs are being cut while the budget for the military and mass deportation adds hundreds of billions of dollars, and tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans are extended. How do we respond? Funding for research, especially medical research into diseases like Sickle Cell that disproportionately affect the Black community, has already faced cuts. The Trump administration continues to end programs that could be construed as “DEI,” which in effect is any program aimed at helping the Black community. The verdict is in for Sean “Diddy” Combs and it seems like the prosecution over reached. He was accused of and charged with some heinous acts for sure. But anytime a prominent Black man is attacked by the justice system, it can bring up some complicated emotions. And of course we’ll hear from you! Power Outages. Natural Disasters. Political Collapse. Here’s How We Stay Ready. This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum address the most vital topic of all: survival. The Iran-Israel conflict has a lot of us thinking about nuclear war–although it doesn’t necessarily take a war for society to collapse. Sharon Ross, AKA Ms. Afrovivalist, is a survivalist, a huntress, and a “prepper.” The logic of preparing for societal collapse feels more, well, logical than ever before. Sharon tells us why she moved into the wilderness and shares some basic survival tips for us normies. Check her out at https://www.afrovivalist.com/ or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Afrovivalists The victory of Zohran Mamdani, a self-described “democratic socialist,” in NYC’s primary for Mayor may herald a new era for the Democrats. He won by a surprisingly large margin, winning over many Black voters who had previously supported his opponent, Cuomo. As the Democrats search for a way forward after a devastating defeat in 2024, will Mamdani’s victory pull them toward a more populist, socialist platform? And of course we’ll hear from you!
