Out Of The Dark - Gregg Hurwitz - PenguinRandomWhen darkness closes in―he's your last, best hope. Evan Smoak returns in Gregg Hurwitz’s #1 international bestselling Orphan X series.Taken from a group home at age twelve, Evan Smoak was raised and trained as part of the Orphan Program, an off-the-books operation designed to create deniable intelligence assets―i.e. assassins. Evan was Orphan X. He broke with the Program, using everything he learned to disappear and reinvent himself as the Nowhere Man, a man who helps the truly desperate when no one else can. But now Evan's past in the Orphan Program is reaching out to him.Someone at the very highest level of government has been trying to eliminate every trace of the Orphan Program by killing all the remaining Orphans and their trainers. After Evan's mentor and the only father he ever knew was killed, he decided to strike back. His target is the man who started the program and who is now the most heavily guarded person in the world: the President of the United States. But President Bennett knows that Orphan X is after him and, using weapons of his own, he's decided to counter-attack. Bennett activates the one man who has the skills and experience to track down and take out Orphan X―the first recruit of the program, Orphan A.With Evan devoting all his skills, resources, and intelligence to find a way through the layers of security that surround the President, suddenly he also has to protect himself against the deadliest of opponents. It's Orphan vs. Orphan with the future of the country―even the world―on the lineLouis and Louise - Julie Cohen - Hachette If you could look at one life in two different ways, what would you see?Louis and Louise are separated by a single moment in time, a strike of chance that decided their future. The day they were born is when their story began. In one, Louis David Alder is born a male.In the other, Louise Dawn Alder is born a female.Louis and Louise are the same in many ways - they have the same best friends, the same parents, the same dream of being a writer and leaving their hometown in Maine as soon as they can. But because of their gender, everything looks different. Certain things will happen in their lives to shape them, hurt them, build them back up again. But what will bring them back home?

Welcome to Episode 8 of Nooks and Crannies! Calipers, Craft Beer and Gun Control This week Evan tells us how he learned Lebanese people do not enjoy having highly contentious political discussions while driving him to and from work! In our first segment (4:55) we thankfully hear the conclusion of the racist history of Anthropology but not before we hear all about Eugenics (6:31) and Phrenology (16:03), Evan and Matt wrap things up with a bit of a broader conversation about how these ideas from the 19th century still resonate (17:55). Going forward we will be leaving this history where it belongs and continuing our march through the annals of anthropology with Boas, Malinowski and that whole gaggle of characters, so…I dunno, hold onto the edge of your seats for that I guess. After this Evan and Matty decided that they needed at least 1 drink, so they recorded their thoughts and here they are (23:40). After Evan finished his Manhattan he decided to listen to the proud Floridian Paul ‘Cosmo’ Csomo, co-host of the amazing animal podcast Varmints, graciously kick off the “Where’s There Like?” mini-ethnographic segment (27:28). We covered a lot of ground here; from ‘cosmo’politan cuisine to the lack of road gators, the futility of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and ended things on a not really at all-contentious gun conversation (40:40). Honestly, Ol’ Matty actually got a bit of a schooling, thanks Paul, twas fascinating. Listen for the conclusion of Paul and Matt’s chat on Ep9. If that all was not enough, Matt decided to bring back Matty’s Corner from the Podstuff Podcast (48:06)! On this edition, Matty recommends The Skip and Josh Podcast because it is like two friends who are much more knowledgeable about all sports, including hockey, then Evan is, having an in-depth yet approachable conversation about all sports and hockey which of course Evan, being a Sens fan and all, would have no chance keeping up with. Because his team sucks, this is what I am trying to say. Matthew then recommends the Edge of Sports Podcast by Dave Zirin, which is like a one-stop-shop for all things Politics of Sport. Evan retorts with a New York Times op-ed by Lara Bazelon that suggests Kamala Harris may not, in fact, be a progressive prosecutor (51:06). Kris and Evan fly duo this week since Dave can’t make it, but at least he’s able to call in and share a strange dream he had. After Evan and Kris ponder its meaning, they dive into this week’s movies. Kris starts off by reviewing the documentary HE NAMED ME MALALA, which disappointingly patronizes its subject. Then Evan talks about the documentary DRUNK STONED BRILLIANT DEAD, a funny, fast-moving movie with great music that recounts the history National Lampoon Magazine. Finally, both of them discuss TWIXT, a bizarre film by Francis Ford Coppola that neither of them knew about until they watched it on Netflix. They quickly discovered why. It’s just a strange flick that baffles them for a million reasons. Tangents this week include Crean family holiday movies and actors who are difficult to work with.
