Welcome to Episode 54 of Nooks and Crannies! Hazy Climate Change, the RBG Carrot + Stick, or Why OG Paul is so Existentially Exhausted? :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Welcome and Thank you to our cohort of listeners; without your unwavering support we would not have reached 5000 total DL’s/Listens! Huge milestone that Evan and I never thought we would reach, could not have done it without your earholes and without all our wonderful recurring guests! Okay. Enough of that shit, lets get intensely political and induce existential despair! Pay back for the last episode which was super a-political and silly: https://nooksandcrannies.podbean.com/e/53-random-burlesque-culinary-publishing-fun-with-moxie-other-paul-and-dante-s-inferno Kicking things off Matty fills Epen in on his “fuck of a last three weeks” which included; losing a golf match, shamefully having to buy bubble tea, a major and embarrassing concussion (numero 38 I think), forest fire apocalyptic smoke, a COVID test and most importantly of all, Matt started a Farmville Farm. Then Evan and I start deep diving on the politics of modern forest management principles, including indigenous principles, and of course Swidden Agriculture! Future episode for sure, such dorks we are.. We then hear from OG Paul about the depths of his political existential despair in relation to the QAnnon conspiracy and the dumbing down (uncritical nature) of American Society and how this relates to the impending presidential election. OGP takes us home with some extra sad discussion on the passing of Chief Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and how impactful her life and career was to American’s interested in positive progress, justice and equality. As per special request, and with permission from the artist, I play a little ditty from Ms Vi: (2019) Three Little Birds by The Indelible Violet, Produced by Proud Pappa Matty. Creative Commons 4.0 :-P Talk to you all real soon, be well, eat well, peace and solidarity, keep up the good fights and aren’t we lucky?!? And thanks again for all the support, it is truly humbling. After that they all review CENTIGRADE (37:37), a subzero survival tale. They wrap up with GET DUKED! (47:54), a comedy about teens being hunted in the Scottish Highlands. This week it's Junkfoodpiece Theatre and who sucks before Megan excitedly reviews HAMILTON (2:55), a terrific filmed version of the musical. Then Evan and Megan explore WE ARE LITTLE ZOMBIES (10:17), an in-your-face Japanese film that swings for the fences with mixed success. Next, everyone digs into THE BEACH HOUSE (21:05), an eco-horror flick with solid body horror that very much divides our hosts. Lastly, they all review RELIC (35:29) a movie with compelling physical and metaphorical horror.
Casey and Dr. Matt are joined by Tiffany Naccarato (Peer Recovery Coach for USARA) and Evan Fields (Peer Recovery Coach for USARA) to talk about Tiffany's experience with addiction and how living on the streets and rarely seeing her kids has impacted her work with USARA (Utah Support Advocates for Recovery Awareness). Then Evan describes his own experience with addiction and how it ultimately led him to find out about USARA and how he is now focused on trying to help others who have struggled with substance abuse disorders.

Evan and David check out some anime from the Spring 2020 season, including Gal & Dino, Listeners, Hi Score Girl Season 2 (technically not this season but ... Netflix), and Sing “Yesterday” for Me. Then Evan reviews the unhinged, hyper-violent Weekly Shonen Jump manga Chainsaw Man! Topics include: playing video games to lose weight, air horns, and being allegedly horny for Zero Two. Special thanks to Patrick Sutton from The Cockpit for editing this episode! Send us feedback at podcast@anigamers.com! Show notes, links, comments, and more can be found at http://anigamers.com/podcast.
We're still social distancing, but we've got tons of streaming titles to discuss. First, Evan delves into the salacious Netflix docuseries TIGER KING (4:20). Next, Megan covers BACURAU (15:00), a Brazilian film that sounds bonkers, in a good way. Then Evan reviews RESISTANCE (26:10), the Jesse Eisenberg film about Marcel Marceau. After that Megan and Dave tackle Ellen Page's doc THERE'S SOMETHING IN THE WATER (33:35). Everyone wraps with UNCORKED (46:40), a delightful drama about an aspiring sommelier.
Dave is on vacation so friend of the show Dede Crimmins returns as a guest this week! She starts off with her picks for Women in Horror Month: THE LODGE (6:47), PELICAN BLOOD (13:00), and DEAD DICKS (14:50). Then Evan reviews INCITEMENT (20:31), a tense thriller from the Boston Israeli Film Festival. Next Megan and Dede tackle GRETEL & HANSEL (30:35), a fun spin on the classic fairy tale. The gang wraps up with HORSE GIRL (45:05), the Netflix thriller starring Alison Brie that's annoyingly ambiguous.
Hanging chads, pepperoni, and things swingin’ are big topics of conversation this week. Plus, we have lots of movies. Megan talks about PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE (4:18), which is FINALLY coming out in the U.S. Then Evan spills the beans about the Boston Israeli Film Festival and the documentary BREAKING BREAD (15:50), the dark comedy FORGIVENESS (19:28), starring what Evan calls Israel’s Nick Frost and Simon Pegg, the documentary I WAS NOT BORN A MISTAKE (23:50), about an orthodox trans woman, and the dark comedy BORN IN JERUSALEM AND STILL ALIVE (31:00). Then it’s the Boston SciFi Film Festival, with PROXIMA (38:06) leading off the discussion, followed by THE LONG WALK (47:48), a horror/sci-fi movie featuring an older man and a ghost who helps him to travel through time, and the fallout that results from it. Finally it's AFTER WE LEAVE (55:10), a dystopian future flick that has some good elements and not so good elements
Welcome to Episode 30 of Nooks and Crannies! 30 - The Meritocratic Mythos of Private Equity Firms or a Workers Revolt with Austerity and Chaka Khan :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: (2:00) Meritocratic Meritocracy is a Relativistic Mythos: Evan and Matt kick things off with an interrogation of the concept of Meritocracy and how it relates to education and work. We look at how meritocratic expectations are embodied by many undergrads from privileged backgrounds are reinforced through their lived experiences vs how working class students approach expectations of meritocracy. Then Evan brings the chat to the workplace, how the idea of ‘hard work will pay off’ is a mythos *not totally untrue, just rare in practice but reinforced through cultural artifacts like the media. It is evident that Matty has been out of the ‘job game’ and ‘employment field’ for quite some time, but he tries to keep up… (20:38) Violet’s Terrible Two’s: Vi announced her presence on the pod so the BFF’s decided to do a lil impromptu ditty on her adventures *and our, with being a cantankerous 21/4 year old! We also chat about Matt’s birthday and both make each other feel bad for forgetting each others B-Day’s! Miss you mom… (24:20) Battle of Blair Mountain: Funny and tragic story from our collective Labour history. Hey, you like your weekend’s and 8 hour day? Maybe you are like me and think, hey Domestic Labour is just as valuable as conventional Labour..Or maybe you find yourself thinking: “You know what this protest needs, gatling-guns and homemade shrapnel, to spice things up!” Well hold onto your private detective agency badge folks, Evan is about to tell ya’all and an exasperated Mamoo about The Battle of Blair Mountain (W. Virginia)! (40:43) Impromptu Cast Commercial: Despite this being a pretty solid recording sesh by your valiant co-host’s, we had major technical issues (tape delay due to faulty internet), luckily we use Cast! The exceptional audio recording platform that has saved my arse on multiple occasions (I recorded the entire Chronicity Series *forthcoming, on Cast, I had major connectivity issues then too, the recordings are clean as a whistle). So if any podcaster is curious, give Cast a Try. (41:52) Timmies, Canada’s Favorite Private Equity Firm: What started as a begin yet very common Canadian Question: How do you take your Tim’s? Diatribed into a interesting investigation into Private Equity Firms, especially 3G Capital. Here is a link to their contact page, if you are curious as to why they use Temporary Foreign Workers or maybe just..what’s the deal with the fries at Tim’s? Be sure to reach out: https://www.3g-capital.com/contact.html After complaining about this for a bit, Evan offers up a couple more examples of the evils of PEF’s (Canadian Media conglomeration and the US housing market). Good Times! (57:42) And to end things on a lighter note, listen to this Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1KLqQq6TnTyfLG81ej1oaq and find out why the universalistic opinion (Evan and Matt’s wife Melly) all think that Matty has the musical styling’s of a 52 y.o. woman from Ohio. Yes folks, this is Matt’s much anticipated by no one: Great Female Singers (ongoing), recommendations are strongly encouraged eh..happy to add to this generic list :) :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: N&C Links All The Episodes Drop us a line: Nooksandcranniespod@gmail.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nooksandcranniespodcast Ponder Evan’s Blurry Pictures: https://www.instagram.com/nooks_and_crannies_pod/ Find Nooks and Crannies on Spotify Follow, Rate and Review on Podchaser (please!) It’s the holiday season, so Evan and David convene to celebrate the most important holiday of all: Gundam Day. Then Evan talks about his slow progress through the first season of Psycho-Pass, David checks in with first impressions of Pokémon Sword, and Evan reviews the three volumes of the Saint Young Men manga that are currently out in English. It’s a sitcom about Jesus and Buddha living together as roommates in Tokyo! Topics include: too many video games, mobile suit veterans, and pulling an Evan Minto by reading the Bible. Welcome to Episode 28 of Nooks and Crannies! Halloween Spectacular: Self Immolating Sens Fans, Floppy Disked ICQ chatting, Making Bread with Cod Baskets. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: (4:37) Evan immediately breaks his promise of a “no rant” episode by absolutely loosing it on Ottawa Senator’s owner Eugene Melnyk. Folks this is the best rant in Nooks and Crannies history! In solidarity with my valiant co host, here are just a few stories that support his vitriol; Gambling Debts, apparently he is trying to get his private jet back (sad really), how he literally guilt tripped a diehard Sens fan into giving him a chunk of their liver! and of course, rumors continue to swirl about him selling the team but he won’t because he is likes this shit. Oh, and we also talk about the Canucks, who are going to be okay going forward, Poor Evan. (18:13) Hold onto your Cod Basket’s folks, cuz its time for another Canadian Heritage Moment! This week we are discussing the fake-Italian not quite British ‘explorer’ John, don’t you dare call me Giovanni, Cabot, and the “discovery” of cod off the coast of Newfoundland! Fish heads, fish heads, eat them up yum! (22:25) Get your floppy disks out folks, we are taking the time machine back to like I dunno, lets say 1989…Its another addition of “Dimming 90’s Memories with Mamoo”. Matty explains to Evan what the eff DOS is, how to download shareware games from a Surrey Library database, stealing AOL CD’s, and the glorious world of ICQ *Uh..uooo! (Side Note: First Google suggestion on ICQ was “Is ICQ still a thing?” Apparently it is!! Then Evan turns the tables, talking about the quite frightening sounding Omegle… :( According to their still existing website, they see things a little differently: The Internet is full of cool people; Omegle lets you meet them. When you use Omegle, we pick someone else at random so you can have a one-on-one chat. (35:50) Then for no reason whatsoever, Matty decided to explain to Epen how to make bread from hand (by hand?). Two notes that I forgot to mention, for egg wash; add a small splash of water and whip that up a bit with a fork, secondly; when baking with milk add no more than half what the recipe calls for, for liquid (this recipe calls for 2 cups of water, sub 1 of those for milk), and you will want to microwave that milk first (like 20-30 seconds). Enjoy! Even though your first loaf will suck… (44:55) And to wrap things up, the fella’s felt obliged to talk about their least favorite holiday, Halloween *We also hate Thanksgiving, which happens in October in Canada, not really sure why…Anyway, we keep it rather non-ranty, we talk about our favorite childhood costumes, trick or treat strategies (including Matty’s full sized chocolate bar recon schemes), teenage hijinx *including Matty’s near nard loss due to a hammered down screetch-a-roo, and why we both hate adult Halloween, but also why we need to get Evan back into that cape and bejeweled crown! ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Episode 28 Links: Fun Eugene Melnyk Story’s: https://www.macleans.ca/society/health/did-eugene-melnyk-jump-the-queue-for-a-new-liver/ https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/ottawa-senators-owner-eugene-takes-legal-action-to-get-private-jet-back-1.5287642 https://thehockeywriters.com/ottawa-senators-ownership-problem-an-nhl-problem/ https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/casino-cash-chips-melnyk-1.5304618 James Beard bread book: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/545911.Beard_on_Bread Mark Bittman’s How to Cook Everything: http://www.howtocookeverything.com/ John Cabot, Canadian Heritage Minute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ds8G9sFOK5w :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: N&C Links All The Episodes Drop us a line: Nooksandcranniespod@gmail.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nooksandcranniespodcast Ponder Evan’s Blurry Pictures: https://www.instagram.com/nooks_and_crannies_pod/ Find Nooks and Crannies on Spotify Graphics by Donna Hume ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Theme Music Attribution: Cullah - "Neurosis of the Liver" on "Cullah The Wild" https://www.cullah.com/discography/cullah-the-wild/neurosis-of-the-liver Under license (CC BY 4.0) https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
This week Megan blows Evan’s mind when she reveals some shocking new information to him about corn. Yes, corn. She and Dave kick off the show by reviewing the utterly disappointing MEMORY: THE ORIGINS OF ALIEN (3:35), a behind-the-scenes documentary that repeats all the same old stories about Ridley Scott’s beloved 1979 film. Then Evan and Dave cover Martin Scorsese’s often-overlooked gem THE KING OF COMEDY (14:38), detailing why JOKER is such an unsuccessful attempt to mimic it. Next Dave and Megan review LUCY IN THE SKY (23:42), a movie so frustrating they wish they didn’t have to talk about it. The one positive thing they can agree on though, is that Natalie Portman goes for broke with her performance. Lastly, all three of them delve into the Netflix mini-series UNBELIEVABLE (35:27), discussing why its first episode is so infuriating, while expounding upon why it’s such an important examination of trauma and a satisfying police procedural with tremendous performances by its leads Kaitlyn Dever, Merritt Wever, and Toni Collette.
Today is Prediction Friday!!!! In this episode Evan runs through the major games for the weekend and gives his score predictions. Evan’s first round of predictions are for the Saturday NCAA games. Then Evan lays out his NFL predictions and highlights the game of the week, Saints vs Rams.
It’s a disparate movie line-up on Spoilerpiece this week. Dave starts things off with the music documentaries THE ROLLING STONES OLÉ OLÉ OLÉ!: A TRIP ACROSS LATIN AMERICA (4:51) and RUSH: CINEMA STRANGIATIO (11:54). Then Evan regales Kris and Dave with tales of ST. AGATHA (17:40), one of the grosser movies he’s seen in a while. Finally it’s Kris talking about the new release READY OR NOT (30:43).
This week Kris recounts the time he couldn’t go to Lenin’s Tomb because it was “closed for inventory,” leaving Evan and returning guest Megan Kearns completely confused. Megan leads off the episode by describing two films she saw recently THEM THAT FOLLOW (4:11), a somber film about religion and snake charming, and THE PERFECTION (10:00), a more engaging movie about classical musicians that takes some fascinating twists and turns before spiraling into body horror. Then Evan shares his experience watching Ari Aster’s MIDSOMMAR (14:05), which may or may not be “an Evan movie.” Lastly, all three of them dissect THE KITCHEN (28:50), a disappointing kitchen-sink crime drama chock full of critical themes about gender, race, and class that it only superficially addresses, and thinly drawn characters whose motivations don’t make any sense.
This week Spoilerpiece celebrates 5 years of existence! Yay! And of course because it’s a special occasion, the guys hit some technical difficulties, which forced them to re-record the episode. Fortunately they don’t let it get in the way of a good time. Kris is up first to review THE LION KING (3:21), which he describes as more of a reenactment than a remake, mimicking jokes and set pieces without contributing anything new. Then Evan fills him in on FIGHTING WITH MY FAMILY (19:20), a funny and charming movie directed by Stephen Merchant about a young British wrestler (Florence Pugh) trying to hack it in the WWE. Then Dave drops in remotely to cover THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING (30:55), a limited release documentary about gender discrimination in the film industry, that hits hard with statistics and interviews featuring just about every important woman in Hollywood (seriously, see it on July 22).
The Pokémon hits just keep coming as Evan and David discuss game news, including the new Death Stranding trailers and the FOUR new Pokémon announcements (a new Detective Pikachu, Pokémon Home, Pokémon Sleep, and Pokémon Masters). Then Evan recaps FanimeCon 2019 and the state of panels at the San Jose, CA convention, and talks about the Old Boy manga. Topics include: The Paprika Child, the President of Jack Shit, and deep-fried Playstation discs. Send us feedback at podcast@anigamers.com! Show notes, links, comments, and more can be found at http://anigamers.com/podcast.
Evan speaks with Professors Zac Schlader from the University of Buffalo and Matthew Ganio from the University o Arkansas about this years ACSM program and what sessions they will absolutely be attending. Then Evan sits down with Doctoral student Gabrielle Giersch from the Korey Stringer Institute at the University of Connecticut to discuss how students can make the most of their ACSM experience.
(NOTE: This show opens with the music, so be warned that it's a little louder than usual.) Welcome to a diverse week of movies on Spoilerpiece! As Kris notes, there couldn’t be four more different flicks featured on the show. First, Kris talks a little about WHITE CROW (2:20), which Dave recently saw (and wanted to hear Kris’ opinion), then Dave dives into Olivia Wilde’s feature-directing debut BOOKSMART (7:16) and his interview with Wilde. Then Evan covers EXTREMELY WICKED, SHOCKINGLY EVIL, AND VILE (18:16), the Ted Bundy movie starring Zac Efron and directed by Joe Berlinger (and it features some serious stunt casting). Finally, Kris talks the Disney live-action remake of ALADDIN (32:30) and blue Will Smith. Why is 38 minutes longer than the animated version? Kris tells you why!
First Karl joins me to talk about how he and Nicole got cast on the show (6:57), what singles immediately caught his eye (13:12), reacting to bonfire clips of Nicole (14:35), hearing Nicole say their relationship was surface level (17:41), what did he think Nicole's response would be to his admission of sleeping with Brittney (23:02), Brittney's IG April Fools pregnancy joke - which at the time of taping was still a question mark (27:21), where is he at with Brittney now (31:30), what was the timeline of things once he and Nicole got back from filming (34:40), and what were his predictions of the other couples when he first met them (45:42). Then Evan joins me to update things going on with him and Morgan (57:08), did he think about doing his final bonfire differently (1:01:02), his pre-show relationship with Kaci being worse than what was shown (1:10:10), the post-show back and forth on social media and texts that were sent to each other (1:28:08), Kaci's IG live with her dad that Evan felt was wrong (1:33:46), and if Morgan was never a contestant on the show, where does he think he and Kaci would be right now (1:56:57). The Lads are back and less attentive to Steven than ever. Precourt the Hutt makes an appearance before the Lads do all the normal shit. For all you haters out there, they also actually manage to seriously discuss a soccer thing. Then Evan tries to show us all some Spanish porn and things regress to the mean. Enjoy!
The Lads are back and less attentive to Steven than ever. Precourt the Hutt makes an appearance before the Lads do all the normal shit. For all you haters out there, they also actually manage to seriously discuss a soccer thing. Then Evan tries
David is back on the mic to talk TAX NEWS (specifically the alleged tax evasion of Ufotable’s president) and his secret tryst with Granblue Fantasy. Then Evan talks about his return to The Witcher 3 and his week at the Game Developers Conference, including: game worker unionization; sessions about animation, accessibility, and censorship; and the experimental controllers at Alt.Ctrl.GDC. Topics include: the God Damn Convention, the Dark Souls of LED strips, and bring your own teabags. Send us feedback at podcast@anigamers.com! Show notes, links, comments, and more can be found at http://anigamers.com/podcast.
Steve gets real drunk before this one and covers the Curse of Chief Cornstalk and King Tut. Then Evan goes […]
Kris recounts a bizarre run-in he had some naked bike riders in college before he and Evan put on their critic hats this week. Dave is still on paternity leave, but he didn’t let that stop him from recording a special update about what he has been doing and the movies he has been watching. Buckle up for some “Riedel’s Recaps” baby! Kris leads off the main show with a half review of AT ETERNITY’S GATE (8:55), the Willem Dafoe Vincent Van Gogh picture that he was really getting into before recording the show. Then Evan serves up a “Crewind” where he talks about CRAZY RICH ASIANS (17:20), which he liked a lot, and A STAR IS BORN (20:43), which he absolutely hated. After he and Kris spend some time dissecting exactly why he hated it, they tackle this week’s main film, CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME? (27:53), an entertaining Melissa McCarthy drama based on a true story. Its direction is terrific, McCarthy is fantastic, and the unusual friendship at the movie’s center is a joy to watch.
This week, Kris kicks things off with his recent rewatch of BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA (5:03) directed by Francis Ford Coppola. It's wacky and well worth your eyeballs. Meanwhile, Evan's been busy! He recaps some highlights from the Boston Jewish Film Festival (13:47), everything from documentaries to found footage horror flicks. Then it's back to Kris for ROMA (22:30) from Alfonso Cuarón, his best film in years. See it in theaters if you can, Netflix if you must. Then Evan runs us through his favorites from Montreal International Documentary Festival (32:36), highlighting a trilogy focusing on the judicial system in Brazil. Kris closes out the show with THE FRONT RUNNER (46:10), which has a couple of interesting ideas buried way too deep beneath intolerable self-satisfaction.
Evan Bartels is a touring Americana artist/singer/songwriter from Nebraska. Evan stopped by the studio to chat with Jacob while passing through Nashville on an acoustic tour. They talk touring, losing weight, family, coffee, and much more. THEN Evan sings a song at the end, so stick around. Enjoy!
HAPPY FOURTH ANNIVERSARY TO SPOILERPIECE! We forgot to mention it until the end, so we thought we'd mention it here up front. Kris is out of town so we're joined by special guest Sean Burns. On the docket: Riedel's Recaps with SNEAKERS (3:00) and ANT-MAN AND THE WASP (7:18). Then it's a documentary download with RBG (10:54), WHITNEY (15:55), and THE KING (18:30). Then Evan hits us up with SKYSCRAPER (21:38). Everyone recaps CHEECH & CHONG'S UP IN SMOKE (32:30) before getting to Debra Granik's excellent LEAVE NO TRACE (40:10). Don't forget our Patreon! patreon.com/spoilerpiece
Evan and Mary Beth discuss Charles Darwin’s fascination with Pigeons. Then Evan goes to the South Baltimore Pigeon Fancying Society to see how people race pigeons
After some discussion of weather, moods, and major singing in the cold open, the guys get down to tha movies. ROMAN J. ISRAEL, ESQ. is the focus of this week’s installment of “Keeping Up with the Jensons” (3:59). (Kris is trying to see all the Oscar nominees before Academy Awards ceremony.) Then Evan regales everyone with his breakdown of MUTE (12:39), Duncan Jones’ new weirdo flick starring Alexander Skarsgård as a mute guy trying to find his girlfriend. Note: Paul Rudd is the heavy in this one. Lastly, Kris and Dave talk about RED SPARROW (27:30), the new Jennifer Lawrence/Francis Lawrence collaboration with an ending you should see coming, but the preview audience was totes surprised.
Episode 27 is a true STEREO TYPES episode, music all over the map and from different times. We start off talking about Eminem...is REVIVAL his new album or single, sounds like we will find out soon. Then we get into the latest and greatest effort from Action Bronson, Blue Chips 7000. Love it! Then Evan goes into his back catalog of rock and electronic and talks about 2 of his favorites from the early to mid 2000's. First up is Chevelle's Wonder What's Next, their second album but major label debut. Then he goes into Justice's Cross album...and what an album that is! Please go check out the music we discuss and enjoy!
This week the guys talk about the wacky world of Colorado marijuana dispensaries before they delve into three very different movies. Dave and Kris lead off with STRONGER (3:18), the David Gordon Green/Jake Gyllenhaal film about one man’s struggle to overcome the trauma of losing his legs in the Boston Marathon Bombing, while he deals with the pressure of living in the public eye. Then Evan reviews YEAR BY THE SEA (30:38), a tale about an older woman who finds herself by moving to Cape Cod. And last, but certainly not least, all three guys discuss MOTHER! (42:49), the polarizing Darren Aronofsky picture that they have completely different opinions about.
We begin episode 153 with a brief discussion of annoying T-shirts. Then it’s on to the annoying ROUGH NIGHT (3:35). More like ROUGH MOVIE, AMIRITE? Anyspray, it has Kris saying more than once, “I wish it were funnier.” Then Evan regales Kris and Dave with the truly fucked-up sounding THE BOOK OF HENRY (31:38), a movie that feels as if it’s actually 14 different movies crammed into one. Kris takes us down to the basement for a recap of the creepy HELL HOUSE LLC (43:45), and Dave chomps at the bit to get into 47 METERS DOWN (56:32), a Mandy Moore movie that features some sharks, some blood, and the incomparably not-great Matthew Modine. Stay tuned after the closing credits for extra silliness.
This week the guys surprise themselves by reflecting more on string cheese than any adult probably should. Then Evan delves into “Crewind,” the segment formerly known as “Catching up with Crean,” to share his experience watching CLUELESS (at 5:14) for the first time and rewatching Michael Mann’s HEAT (at 9:24) on blu-ray. After he’s done talking about the loving satire of CLUELESS and the awesome actors he forgot were in HEAT, he cedes the floor to Dave to cover IT COMES AT NIGHT (at 14:35), the sophomore effort by KRISHA director Trey Edward Shults. Dave explains why the film deserves a second and possibly third viewing, even though nothing really comes at night, before Evan and Kris explain why THE MUMMY (at 39:24) doesn’t deserve a single viewing due to its stupidity and failure to launch Universal’s Dark Universe franchise.
This week the guys discuss the narrative differences between Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” and film adaptations of her tale at the start of the show. Then Evan reviews Macon Blair’s directorial debut I DON’T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE (at 5:01), which has a title that sounds like a Facebook status Kris would have written if it had existed in 1995. Blair borrows stylistic elements from director Jeremy Saulnier, but his film lacks the intensity, excitement, and payoff of Saulnier’s movies. Next Dave spoilerpieces Evan and Kris into never seeing THE PROMISE (at 27:22), which is like PEARL HARBOR with more death, and a less interesting love story. If you’re looking for context or history behind the Armenian genocide depicted in the movie, you won’t find it. Lastly, Kris closes with Ben Wheatley’s FREE FIRE (at 47:30), a short, stylized action flick with an outcome that is not as funny as its set up. Kris talks about how Wheatley seems more interested in color, movement, and brutality than getting you to care about what his characters are saying, and why that’s disappointing as a viewer.
At the show’s outset, the guys wonder what a wiki site run by Kris would be like, before they dive into this week’s movies. First, Kris regales Dave and Evan with his thoughts on the cinematic implications of the Chinese/American collaboration THE GREAT WALL (at 3:06), an action film with Matt Damon in a non-white savior role that has great creature design, but ultimately is really dumb. Then Evan spoilerpieces FIST FIGHT (at 26:43), a completely nonsensical, failure of a comedy, that has bloopers funnier than its entire hour and a half runtime. Lastly, he and Dave explore I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO (at 45:42), the Oscar-nominated documentary that describes what it’s like to be black in America through the words of author James Baldwin. The brilliant insights Baldwin reveals really resonate with them intellectually and emotionally, although the documentary’s dense content prompts them to recommend more than one viewing, to take in all of its poignant commentary.
This week the guys get in on the game of using three fictional characters to describe themselves. Then Evan and Kris talk about the 70mm and Widescreen Festival at the Somerville Theatre (at 7:04), where they saw TRON and SLEEPING BEAUTY. While discussing how beautiful these films look, they each share new elements that they discovered by watching them on the big screen. After that, Dave provides a “Riedel’s Recap” of GREEN ROOM (at 15:56), which offers specific comparisons to Jeremy Saulnier’s previous movie BLUE RUIN. Next, Kris delivers a “Keeping up with the Jensons” about DEMON (at 21:32), where he offers a very different take on the picture than Evan. Dave transitions into THE BEATLES: EIGHT DAYS A WEEK – THE TOURING YEARS (at 29:57), a Ron Howard documentary that attempts to whitewash tensions between the band’s members. Finally, Kris and Evan close out with QUEEN OF KATWE (at 39:10), a Disney sports movie about chess, which is carried by good humor and cute kids learning about life.
Dave is feeling under the weather so fan favorite Dede Crimmins joins Evan and Kris this week. She and Kris lead off by discussing the Massachusetts Independent Film Festival (at 5:02). They share a few of their favorite films, before Dede transitions into COMPLETE UNKNOWN (at 11:41). Dede finds Rachel Weisz’s character fascinating in it, but she wishes there was more to the movie’s simple plot. Next, Kris talks about how war leaves scars long after hostilities end in THE INNOCENTS (at 21:32), a heavy post-World War II film about rescuing babies. Then Evan and Dede review THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS (at 35:46), a long, slow drama about babies and post-war tensions that also stars Rachel Weisz and features Michael Fassbender as a brooding lighthouse hunk. Dede wraps everything up with MORGAN (at 54:16) a mashup of SPLICE, EX MACHINA, and BLADE RUNNER that has the most wasted cast she has ever seen and an ending that thinks it’s clever without actually being clever.
The sad tale of how Dave broke his middle finger inspires a bizarre horror movie premise on this week’s show. Then Evan’s passing joke about GHOSTBUSTERS leads to a discussion about James Rolfe’s boycott of the new version. Once the guys finish explaining why Rolfe (aka the Angry Video Game Nerd) is wrong, they dig into the political documentary WEINER (at 15:30). All three of them share why this film about Anthony Weiner’s failed run for Mayor of New York City captivated them with its tense interactions and impressed them with its inclusion of his wife Huma Abedin’s perspective. After all their Weiner jokes stop making sense, Evan moves on to cover the HBO movie CONFIRMATION (at 39:34), which chronicles the sexual harassment allegations made against Judge Clarence Thomas during his nomination for the U.S. Supreme Court. Although it feels like too much of a made-for-TV movie, Evan argues that it’s an important story that needs to be told (and seen) since it shares Anita Hill’s perspective and exposes the shady Washington backdoor dealing that actively worked to discredit her. Plus, both Kerry Washington and Wendell Pierce are fantastic in it as Hill and Thomas.
Once again, Evan, Dion and Dan kick off the show talking some WWE, MMA, TV & more. There's some really funny stuff here. Then Evan and Dan are joined by International Man of Mystery, and all around awesome guy, Bruce Buffer to talk a little fighting, movies, being a good person and much more. It's a great show!
This week Kris starts out by asking Dave an important question about how he intends to handle swearing around Baby Henry as he gets closer to actually understanding bad words. Then Evan laments how bad comedy sequels are when he discusses ZOOLANDER 2. The movie’s jokes about millennials suck and it has dumb mythology, but as a great Kiefer Sutherland, which leads to a Kiefer tangent before Kris and Evan tackle DEADPOOL. Friend of the podcast Sam Cohen didn’t care for it, so Evan and Kris start their review of this very funny fourth-wall breaking comic book film by addressing Sam’s issues. Following a GAME OF THRONES tangent, Kris spoilerpieces THE CANAL, an excellent Irish horror flick that he says is creepy, scary, and keeps you guessing. Evan wraps up by talking about horror as well with SOUTHBOUND, a horror anthology that’s freaky, well-put together, and very cohesive. And in case you missed it in the last episode, we are now on Stitcher, so be sure to subscribe to us there if you don’t have iTunes!
Dave is back from sick leave to share his unique take on a classic lullaby. Then Evan and Kris jump into reviewing Ron Howard’s IN THE HEART OF THE SEA, or IN THE FART OF THE SEA, as Dave calls it. The film stars the Greater Hemsworth (Chris) and Brendan Gleeson, but not Dave’s favorite actor Ray Winstone. It’s a movie about a sperm whale that kills seamen, and yes the guys milk that fact for all the laughs it’s worth. They also don’t shy away from making CABIN BOY references whenever possible. Probably the biggest surprise is how much Evan and Kris disagree about it. Their conversation veers into a tangent about Ron Howard films, before all three guys get into this year’s Boston Online Film Critics Association (BOFCA) awards. The three of them share their top 10 lists, and delve into some of the categories where they had completely different items in their ballots like Best Foreign Film and Best Documentary. Highlights include PEACE OFFICER, FINDERS KEEPERS, STRAY DOG, and JAFAR PANAHI’S TAXI. Before they sign off, the guys have a few words of appreciation for the marketers giving BOFCA’s awards some attention, and a few choice words for the organization’s critics.
Kris and Evan fly duo this week since Dave can’t make it, but at least he’s able to call in and share a strange dream he had. After Evan and Kris ponder its meaning, they dive into this week’s movies. Kris starts off by reviewing the documentary HE NAMED ME MALALA, which disappointingly patronizes its subject. Then Evan talks about the documentary DRUNK STONED BRILLIANT DEAD, a funny, fast-moving movie with great music that recounts the history National Lampoon Magazine. Finally, both of them discuss TWIXT, a bizarre film by Francis Ford Coppola that neither of them knew about until they watched it on Netflix. They quickly discovered why. It’s just a strange flick that baffles them for a million reasons. Tangents this week include Crean family holiday movies and actors who are difficult to work with.
Ooh! We got your Oscars right here! So we’re talking about the glitz, glamor and gauche nonsense that is the Academy Awards. But first we hit the movies we saw this week. Kris made it through THE DUFF, a high school movie that, for Kris, doesn’t rank among the great high school movies. Then Evan and Dave saw HOT TUB TIME MACHINE 2—and they’re dumber for it. On the plus side, we rip on the Oscars. Dave GOES OFF on the Oscar voter featured in “The Hollywood Reporter,” Kris enlightens us about jobs at NASA with funny names, and Evan explains the reason for his particular pronunciation of the word “biopic.”
Evan and Chris Whittington discuss Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Ant-Man, Samuel L. Jackson, evil exes, actual X's, video games, Michael Cera, and self-respect. Then Evan wraps it all up with a crazy story from a scrappier time.
Timothy talks with Evan who relates his wife's experience of an entity which looked like ink dropped in water, and which touched her with ice cold tendrils. Then Evan tells a tale of a remote graveyard with a nine foot tall roaring creature, strange sounds, and an unseen hand that pushes visitors.
