Today we hear the Combat Story of Aiden Aslin, a UK citizen who deployed multiple times into conflict zones to fight ISIS in Syria and Russia in Ukraine. [NOTE: We're launching on Patreon soon. Register to get notified at https://www.combatstory.com/patreon] Aiden was not part of the British military. He simply decided the people in Syria being terrorised by ISIS needed more support and found a way to get down range to help. During his multiple deployments into Syria fighting with other westerners against ISIS and nearly dying, Aiden had been following events in Ukraine. He again decided, instead of sitting safely in the UK, to step up and fight for people who needed help. Today, Aiden is officially part of the Ukrainian military. We had to record this particular interview quickly before Aiden deployed to the frontlines again, where he is now. His Instagram account (cossackgundi) is worth a look too where's amassed 20K followers and describes himself as a “British guy Rocking it out in the Ukrainian marines” with what he calls “Warzone Photography” and “Conflict news”. I hope you enjoy this humble and understated Combat Story of someone who left everything behind to help others in two vastly different conflicts as much as I did. This week, Rachael and Jacob Denhollander joined the podcast to discuss what reconciliation and restoration can look like following horrific abuse. Rachael Denhollander, a lawyer and former gymnast, rose to international prominence in 2016 when she became the first woman to publicly denounce and pursue criminal charges against former USA Gymnastics' team doctor Larry Nassar, who sexually abused more than 500 girls and women. Rachael authored What Is a Girl Worth?, which explores her story in depth. In cases of abuse and sexual misconduct within the church, Christians can become fixated on forgiving and forgetting, and fear what will happen if the church gets bad press. But God will continue preserving His church, hence our job is not to protect the church from critique; it is to pursue justice. Failure to do so systemically enables sexual abuse. Justice and reconciliation must go hand in hand. Show Notes: 0:26 Is forgiveness necessary for reconciliation? 6:41 Returning to a proper understanding of God's justice 11:49 There's a cost to caring 17:32 The spirit of humility 20:25 Sexual violence and the church 27:04 God's justice 31:40 How do we restore what was broken? 34:11 Complicit organizations—can you forgive an organization? We explore all of the key questions stemming from the decision. We break down our initial reaction, what it means for Michigan, how much mending Harbaugh will have to do with players and coworkers, how the Wolverines can mitigate negative recruiting and distrust on the trail and what sort of changes to be on the lookout for with the Michigan football program after Harbaugh's five-week dalliance with the NFL. Athletes will get hit with illness. It is a part of the fabric of the journey of performance. (16:50) "In fact, the truth is, a smart coach will plan for sickness and injuries, no different than a contingency plan when you're making a budget." But how do you emerge from being under the weather in an effective way that will provide minimal downtime? Coach Matt Dixon provides that framework and counsel on managing sickness and emerging back to full-steam ahead. There are no gimmicks, no magic potions, and no quick fixes; just a practical guide to managing and emerging through sickness as a performance enthusiast. First of all, it's important to do your best to prevent major illness from happening by nailing the basics - prioritizing cleanliness, emphasizing good sleep, plenty of hydration, solid nutrition, and managing life stressors. (20:10) "The accumulation of too much stress is going to leave your body with lower defenses." (25:54) "When sickness arises, you ability to positively adapt to a training schedule is - unarguably - severely limited or even eliminated." Knowing this, your goal is to return to the mission as quickly as possible, with minimal interruption. You can't ignore it and plow on because 'that's what your plan said.' Remember, life is not a spreadsheet. You must adapt and navigate because, (28:34)“The key to success is the consistency of effective training.” Returning from illness requires patience, pragmatism, and logic, but it also requires a little guidance. In this episode, you'll learn: Depending on the type of symptoms (head vs. chest congestion), when is it ok to train? How long should I rest and do nothing? What is the timeline to return to training? How long should I wait to "hit it hard" and get back on plan? Should I try to make up for lost time? What about supplements and vitamins? If you want to avoid, reduce risk, and defend against illness, start building those healthy habits and an approach that creates physical resilience and a long-term platform of health. GRAHAM HANCOCK'S books have sold more than five million copies worldwide and have been translated into 27 languages. His public lectures, radio and TV appearances, including two major TV series for Channel 4 in the UK and The Learning Channel in the US – Quest For The Lost Civilisation and Flooded Kingdoms of the Ice Age – have put his ideas before audiences of tens of millions. He has become recognised as an unconventional thinker who raises controversial questions about humanity's past.Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Hancock's early years were spent in India, where his father worked as a surgeon. Later he went to school and university in the northern English city of Durham and graduated from Durham University in 1973 with First Class Honours in Sociology. He went on to pursue a career in quality journalism, writing for many of Britain's leading newspapers including The Times, The Sunday Times, The Independent, and The Guardian. He was co-editor of New Internationalist magazine from 1976-1979 and East Africa correspondent of The Economist from 1981-1983.In the early 1980's Hancock's writing began to move consistently in the direction of books. His first book (Journey Through Pakistan, with photographers Mohamed Amin and Duncan Willetts) was published in 1981. It was followed by Under Ethiopian Skies (1983), co-authored with Richard Pankhurst and photographed by Duncan Willets, Ethiopia: The Challenge of Hunger (1984), and AIDS: The Deadly Epidemic (1986) co-authored with Enver Carim. In 1987 Hancock began work on his widely-acclaimed critique of foreign aid, Lords of Poverty, which was published in 1989. African Ark (with photographers Angela Fisher and Carol Beckwith) was published in 1990.Hancock's breakthrough to bestseller status came in 1992 with the publication of The Sign and The Seal, his epic investigation into the mystique and whereabouts today of the lost Ark of the Covenant. ‘Hancock has invented a new genre,' commented The Guardian, ‘an intellectual whodunit by a do-it-yourself sleuth.' Fingerprints of the Gods, published in 1995 confirmed Hancock's growing reputation. Described as ‘one of the intellectual landmarks of the decade' by the Literary Review, this book has now sold more than three million copies and continues to be in demand all around the world. Subsequent works such as Keeper Of Genesis (The Message of the Sphinx in the US) with co-author Robert Bauval, and Heaven's Mirror, with photographer Santha Faiia, have also been Number 1 bestsellers, the latter accompanied by Hancock's three-part television series Quest For the Lost Civilisation. In 2002 Hancock published Underworld: Flooded Kingdoms of the Ice Age to great critical acclaim, and hosted the accompanying major TV series. This was the culmination of years of research and on-hand dives at ancient underwater ruins. Arguing that many of the clues to the origin of civilization lay underwater, on coastal regions once above water but flooded at the end of the last Ice age, Underworld offered tangible archaeological evidence that myths and legends of ancient floods were not to be dismissed out of hand.Graham's next venture Talisman: Sacred Cities, Secret Faith, co-authored by Robert Bauval, was published in 2004. This work, a decade in preparation, returns to the themes last dealt with in Keeper Of Genesis, seeking further evidence for the continuation of a secret astronomical cult into modern times. It is a roller-coaster intellectual journey through the back streets and rat runs of history to uncover the traces in architecture and monuments of a secret religion that has shaped the world. In 2005 Graham published Supernatural: Meetings with The Ancient Teachers of Mankind, an investigation of shamanism and the origins of religion. This controversial book suggests that experiences in altered states of consciousness have played a fundamental role in the evolution of human culture, and that other realities – indeed parallel worlds – surround us all the time but are not normally accessible to our senses. While researching Supernatural, Hancock travelled to the Amazon to drink visionary brew Ayahuasca – the Vine of Souls – used by shamans for more than 4000 years. It was his experiences with the vine lead to his his first work of fiction, Entangled. Written with the same page-turning appeal that has made his non-fiction so popular Entangled tells the story of a supernatural battle of good against evil fought out across the dimension of time on the human plane. It was followed by two other novels, War God: Nights of the Witch and War God: Return of the Plumed Serpent — the first two volumes of his three volume supernatural adventure series on the Spanish conquest of Mexico. Returning to non-fiction Hancock has now completed Magicians of the Gods, the sequel to Fingerprints of the Gods. Published on 10 September 2015 in the UK and on 10 November 2015 in the US, Magicians is not an update of Fingerprints, but a completely new book presenting compelling new evidence for a lost civilisation and for the global cataclysm that swept it from the earth.

Returning guest, Dr. Owen Strachan, joins us for today's conversation in answering the question, what is the problem with transgenderism? What is at stake here? After chatting about beards, they jump into their conversation with guest Dr. Strachan, the Provost and Research Professor of Theology at Grace Bible Theological Seminary in Arkansas, along with being a Senior-fellow with Family Research Council (FRC). Dr. Strachan has written a number of books, with one being particularly applicable to today's conversation—What Does the Bible Teach about Transgenderism? How big of an issue is this facing the church today? Learn about the broader issue of destabilizing the divine design God established in Genesis and where the sinful heart of man ends up. Is there a culpability in silence on this issue? What is the responsibility of pastors and shepherds in considering and addressing this issue? They address all these issues and more.Taking a step back, Ray asks Dr. Strachan to explore how we got to where we are. They chat about Truman's The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self. While rejecting the doctrine of creation and embracing ungodly beliefs, the normalization of different things like homosexuality and transgenderism has become reality. Listen to their explanation of what the theological problem is with transgenderism. God is above and beyond man, but man is constantly seeking to be on the level of God. Learn about God's glory in our manhood and womanhood, and the created-creature distinction—the stakes are high, this is not a trivial issue.Ray asks Dr. Strachan to get practical with how this looks in real-life issues. What do you say to the parents dealing with this? How do you walk through children grappling with these issues? They address the shame and self-discrimination that can surround these issues. Learn about the wild, rebellious heart that is always an offense to God. Rejecting the will and design of God brings an appropriate level of grief. Pray and work to live in grace and truth. Learn about what it means to truly love your neighbor. Mantra is a powerful tool to shift one's outlook. Listen as they discuss the impacts and effects of mantra as conveyed through repetition of practice. Unfiltered entertainment is impacting the next generation and the repetition of what is being seen is determining what the people believe is normal and right. They touch on the underlying worldview in movies like Frozen. Learn to teach discernment to your children for both movies and music. Who is catechizing your children? As the conversation draws to a close, Ray asks, "Where does society go if we continue in this trajectory?" Dr. Strachan states it is a bleak future without the hope of the gospel. Christians and pagans are living together, we must be salt and light in preaching the gospel. Christian families need to be living witnesses in exerting influence on today's society. The church has been here before—look at the early church, what they were facing, and how they exploded in the face of a morally antithetical society. She explores what makes a good contributor, shares the importance of love in raising kids, and discusses why she prioritizes her family over her job. “Get over yourself and go serve where you're needed. Find out what's important and go work on what's important. Dr. Bill Schindler is a returning guest on our show! Be sure to check out his appearance on Boundless Body Radio on episode 14! Dr. Schindler is an archeologist who has traveled to every corner of the globe to learn about our human roots! In his travels, Dr. Schindler learned that our current industrialized food system is vastly different than what we have eaten as a species for millions of years. He and his family, nicknamed the Modern Stone-Age Family, strive to eat and live the way our ancestors did, all while dealing with our modern lives. His much-anticipated book, Eat Like A Human, was published in 2021! His goal is to help readers find food that is as nutrient-dense as possible, and preparing that food using methods that release those nutrients, and make them safe and bioavailable to our bodies, which is exactly what allowed our ancestors, millions of years ago, to not only live, but thrive! Let's begin with the glass half full, shall we? The Lakers' 113-107 loss to the Heat in Miami featured a second half comeback cutting a lead once as big as 26 down to four, indicative of their unwillingness to fold up the tents and quit against a team outplaying them in every facet. However much you think that push was the Heat having pulled their starters and taking their foot off the gas, rather than the Lakers actually playing better, can be debated. But either way, the visitors deserve credit for wanting to make a game of things. But glass half empty... holy hell, did the Lakers play incompetently bad basketball during the first half and change against Miami! Like, shockingly bad! "WTF are you people doing???" bad. And that badness raised some interesting postgame thoughts from Russell Westbrook, Avery Bradley and LeBron James about issues like playing hard, playing smart, playing with purpose, and what are the biggest problems plaguing the Lakers right now. If nothing else, it revealed a lot about different world views of different players. And finally, Anthony Davis is very close to returning, likely sometime this week.. What are some of the immediate impacts of having him back? Plus, Dwyane Johnson eats (bleep)tons of cod!!! No. Really. (Bleep)tons. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT ONE: The Kamenetzkys discuss the somewhat good and downright gross during the loss to Miami. SEGMENT TWO: How much of the Lakers' issues are playing hard vs. playing smart SEGMENT THREE: The ramifications of Anthony Davis' return. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Greetings Heathens! In today's episode of Talk Heathen, Katy Montgomerie is joined by Kenneth Leonard. It's going to be a great show!Let's get to calls! Nick from Arizona would like to talk about the greatest contradictions contained within the bible. Katy brings up the idea of Hell and how an all loving God has a place like that for punishment. I hurt you because I love you is incredibly toxic.Alex in Australia is up next, he claims that God does exist and he has the arguments to prove it scientifically and philosophically. He goes on to try to claim that mathematics (and specifically the Fibonacci Sequence,) is magical or indicates a supreme being because of its complexity.Returning caller Gohan in Texas claims that the existence of morality is based on God and created the standard of what is right and what is wrong in terms of this morality. Sadly, Gohan doesn't really define their terms and the call devolves into arbitrary lists of do's and don'ts (morality.) His arguments don't really fly though.Jeff in Ohio says the Bible is accurate and that it explains and reflects the human condition very well. Except for when it is inconsistent and conflicts with itself but purports itself to being THE source for accuracy, morality, etc. So it doesn't explain it all very well at all. That's our show for this week, please continue to be safe in your area, wear your mask, and please please PLEASE get vaccinated and boosted if you can. The world is better with you in it. See you next week!
In today's episode, I speak to Shterny Tubul about the lifelong process of Ratzui V'shuv, pining for spirituality, but always returning to the real work in this physical world. Shterny speaks about wrestling with a woman's profoundly physical role in Judaism and how she had to redefine her understanding of spirituality. Through parenting her child, she began to sense what it meant to connect to G-d through her daily life, and she shares how she balances her personal process of longing and returning. || To become a paying subscriber of the podcast, please visit patreon.com/humanandholy.
