James Franco visits Google to discuss writing, directing, producing and starring in his film "The Disaster Artist.” The movie is based on Greg Sestero's best-selling tell-all book about the making of Tommy Wiseau's cult-classic disasterpiece The Room, often referred to as “The Greatest Bad Movie Ever Made”. In the film, Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero become friends after meeting each other in an acting class in San Francisco. Hoping to achieve Hollywood stardom, Sestero moves to Los Angeles and signs on to appear in Wiseau's project. Financed with his own money, Wiseau writes, directs and stars in "The Room," a critically maligned movie that becomes a cult classic. The film also stars Dave Franco, Seth Rogen and Zac Efron. Tread Perilously's Cornucopia of Sci-Fi continues with an episode of Upload called "Strawberry." Nathan and Nora are still on the road returning consciousnesses of the departed to their families. Their latest stop brings them to a farm where pork and cheese are produced. Note the wording. While the parents of the departed prove folksy and nice, their world is anything but. Back in the "Afterlife," Ingrid realizes the Nathan she's seeing is not the genuine person ... even if it gives her another advantage on Tinsley. Choak also realizes there are two Nathans, but will he be able to put all the pieces together? Justin is alerted to another secret show. He also rallies against the modern meaning of "content." Star Robbie Amell proves to be unmemorable. Erik refuses to accept another member of the cast as anything other than his most memorable role. His criticism of The Disaster Artist adaptation also comes up. Justin champions Andor again. A different league of guest actors are suggested for the farmers. Erik forgets if a Baldwin passed away. Fantasyland rides become important. The pair try to figure out how pet names emerge. A new marketing angle is found. Justin gets completely lost in the episode and learns about the "Afterlife" live.

Before the memes of Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems flooded the internet, there was another Safdie brother directed film that flooded the internet with memes, and that's the 2017 crime-thriller "Good Time." After the Twilight saga, Robert Pattinson was looking to break from the pretty boy role he was typecasted as. Many say that "Good Time" was his breakout performance that made audiences take him seriously as an indie actor. It also put the Safdie brothers on the map as directing favorites for A24 fans. What's it about? It centers around two Queens brother's named Connie and Nick who decide to rob a bank. After a paint bomb is released in the duffle bag they were carrying, they go on the run in New York City. Chaos ensues. Caution: movie spoilers. Intro: 0 to 2:22. Film Discussion: 2:22 to 1:05:52. Plot sinkholes, disappearing characters, bizarre dialogue, wooden performances - all features of the 2003 film The Room. Described by one reviewer as "like getting stabbed in the head," the $6 million film earned a grand total of $1,800 at the box office when it first opened. Despite it's disastrous debut the independent film starring and written, produced, and directed by mysterious misfit Tommy Wiseau has gone on to cult status and continues to play to sell-out crowds. Screenings are often raucous with audiences throwing American footballs around and hurling plastic spoons at the screen. Greg Sestero played Mark in the film and co-wrote The Disaster Artist, a memoir about the experience of making the film, which became a 2018 movie starring and directed by James Franco. He's in New Zealand for a screening and Q&A at Wellington's Roxy cinema.

SIDE HUSTLE 6: JAMES FRANCO: WE KNOW HE IS CANCELLED, STOP TEXTING US ABOUT IT We live in an era where men are being held accountable for being awful (not nearly enough of them but it's a start). This is a good thing. Most of these men are older, however, and in the creative sphere most are past their Best By date. So it is unusual to have someone like James Franco, literally at the apex of his skills both as actor and director, undone by his own destructive impulses. It offers a fascinating "what if" to a career that will more than likely never be now. As actor we begin with PINEAPPLE EXPRESS (2008), the first mainstream feature directed by David Gordon Green (we talked about his brilliant "Joe" during our Cage Uncaged season, still worth a watch!) and featuring a near-future murderers row of comedic actors. Like most films written by Seth Rogen and longtime co-writer Evan Goldberg, Express eventually boils down to a story about male friendship. This time between Rogen and Franco's sweet, open-hearted stoner Saul. It is a classic performance in a classic stoner comedy.Franco has directed a lot in a short time and our "side hustle" film of his is THE DISASTER ARTIST (2017) detailing the, uh, male friendship between real life Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero. No, this was not written by Rogen and Goldberg. Instead we have a true life story about the man behind one of the best worst movies ever made, The Room, who spends a lot of time, money and effort in order to not have to say "I love you" to his best bud (who is played by Franco's own brother, not-cancelled Mr. Allison Brie, Dave). Both a singular performance that strives to go beyond imitation and directing makes this the most Franco of movies. It shouldn't work but does. An amazing career most likely cut short in mainstream cinema with no one else to blame but himself. Maybe he can play himself in the eventual film version. Ken and Thomas are joined by Leigh to sort it all out. My guest today is an award-winning author, journalist and writer for film, television, and video games. After graduating from Michigan State University with a degree in English literature, he travelled to Uzbekistan as a volunteer for the Peace Corps. He then returned to New York where he worked as author and editor, reporting on the Iraq war for Harper's Magazine and contributing literary criticism to The New York Times Book Review. A keen thinker on video games, in 2010 he published Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter, a book that included a dissection of his experiences playing Grand Theft Auto IV while abusing cocaine. His 2013 book, The Disaster Artist, was turned into an Oscar-nominated feature film directed by James Franco, and his short story Aral inspired Werner Herzog's 2016 film Salt and Fire. My guest has also written for video games such as The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Uncharted 4, and Gears of War 5, and in 2021 he co-developed the Apple TV series The Mosquito Coast, based on the Paul Theroux novel of the same title. Recently he wrote three episodes for the second season of Star Wars: Andor, due to air in 2024. Welcome, Tom Bissell. Thank you for listening to My Perfect Console. It's time to end the season, and it's only fitting that we talk about The Disaster Artist for our "good movie" episode! For those of you who have been following closely, you know already that The Room won the worst movie of the season, so we figured we'd give our favorite bad production a nod with this James Franco Adaptation. Filmmaker and author Greg Sestero joins me for this episode of Salt Lake Dirt. Greg wrote The Disaster Artist which is about his friendship with Tommy Wiseau and their experience making the cult classic film The Room. The book is one of the best film memoirs out there in my opinion. And of course, The Room speaks for itself. There is a reason why after 20 years the film resonates with a worldwide audience. Greg will make his first Salt Lake City appearance on Saturday May 27, 2023. The Salt Lake Film Society will host a 35mm screening of The Room and a Q & A with Greg as well as some other fun surprises. You can grab tickets at SLFSTIX.com. Great book, great film, great guy. I look forward to chatting with Greg in the future about his upcoming film projects. Thanks for listening. Mario Brothers Not PC 1993Get M A D with Chris Graves 5-8-2023 Super MarioGM #46(Graves Notes)On yet another experimental episode of Get M.A.D. with yours truly, super producer Chuck Ochelli & I poke fun at an awesomely bad attempt at bringing the classic 1985 Nintendo game "Super Mario Bros." to the big screen! The making of this movie is a notorious Hollywood story in & of itself, so it's not at all surprising that this was the end result! More than a few times throughout the years, I've actually considered writing a screenplay about the making of this movie! I truly feel like that story would make for a hilarious Hollywood cautionary tale, in a similar kind of way that "The Disaster Artist" showed us the making of the cult classic, "The Room". Like countless other projects, I may still write that screenplay one day. The story of how Daisy Jones & the Six went from book to TV show is a fascinating one. Scott Neustadter, best known for comedies like 500 Days of Summer and The Disaster Artist, was sent the unpublished manuscript about the rise of a rock band in Los Angeles in the 1970s, on a whim. Little did he know it would become a bestseller. At the time, he had given the book to his wife, with whom he had never worked before. But she just so happened to be at Reese Witherspoon's production company, Hello Sunshine. They loved the book and his adaptation and the show was born. Now, Neustadter is the co-creator and co-showrunner of the Amazon show. Final Draft's podcast Write On sat down with Neustadter to hear about his process. “If you're going to write television– it's an important, huge undertaking so you have to have passion, you have to love the thing... It isn't something you can do on the side. It will become your whole life, so you better love it,” he said. Daisy Jones & the Six is available on Amazon Prime. Please note: this podcast was recorded prior to the WGA Strike.
On this episode of Made in Hollywood Mark and William deep dive into the new upcoming remake of The Room. You may also hear irrelevant things on this episode about Michelle Yeoh, Star Trek, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Star Wars, Tommy Wiseau, The Disaster Artist, Bob Odenkirk, The Flash, Micheal Keaton, Ezra Miller, DC, Marvel, Dr. Strange: Across the Multi-Verse, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, IMAX, AMC Theaters, Ari Aster, Beau is Afraid, Joaquin Phoenix, Phantom of the Opera, The Machine, Amazon, Dialogue Boost, Yellowstone, Beef, Ted Lasso, The Weekend, and The Idol.
Pippa and KJ are joined once more by Ryan Trumpler, this time to discuss James Franco's The Disaster Artist, based on Greg Sestero's memoir of the same name about the making of The Room. This is an episode that started out silly, but turned into a deeper discussion of bad behavior from directors and whether that behavior is tolerable for the sake of art. (Spoiler: it's not.)
We chat with special guest Greg Sestero (The Room, The Disaster Artist) about his upcoming appearance at The Strand in Delaware, OH. Thanks to Yellow Paper Planes for our theme song "Stare To Hold" Purchase tickets for the event here!
Joining Sarah for this special interview episode is actor, writer, director, producer, AND best-selling author, Greg Sestero! You may know him best from the 2003 cult classic "The Room," but Greg has been involved in a lot of cool projects since then — including writing his memoir, "The Disaster Artist" which was adapted into the 2017 Oscar-nominated and Golden Globe-winning movie. We talk about horror influences, the longevity of practical effects over CGI, plus his upcoming sci-fi/horror movie, "Forbidden Sky." You can follow Greg on Twitter/Instagram: @GregSestero And we'll be adding the link for the "Forbidden Sky" Kickstarter when it is live!
The show took a week off but comes back firing on all cylinders. This week, we have a very special guest. Greg Sestero, writer of the best-selling book "The Disaster Artist", co-star of the Best Bad Film ever made "The Room" and writer-director-actor in a new creepy horror film, "Miracle Valley", joins The Bucktooth Gremlins for a nearly 2 hour conversation about Greg's career, famous faces and some of the best bad movies we have seen. By the end of the episode, will Greg really get his answers on Eric, Julia & Emma Roberts??
The time has come to review a piece of cinema for our 150th episode that is hailed as being one of the worst movies ever made - and we try tackle that statement with special guests Nathan and Ty from the Midnight Screening podcast! We discuss the Wiseua phenomenon, Nathan's connection to Greg Sestero, the Disaster Artist (book and movie) and most importantly, what Sophie made of this as her first viewing experience! But even more importantly, this is Sophie's first attempt at editing the podcast, so you can wonder if she had as much fun watching as she did editing it... We look at films like The Founder, The Disaster Artist, Man On The Moon, and more. Let us know your favorites on Facebook! Then we turn our attention to James to talk about his new autobiography, A Movie Making Nerd. A Movie Making Nerd is a personal account of his origins, starting with an early love of making home movies before the rise of the internet and digital video. Rolfe candidly details moments of triumph and failure in both life and filmmaking—from his time in special education school and struggles during adolescence and college, to personal relationships, finding employment, and raising children. Every recollection in A Movie Making Nerd, whether happy, funny, or painful, shows how one might turn a childhood hobby into a life-long calling.
