PASSED BALL SHOW #87 7/2/2013 Part 2 WITH BROOKS KIESCHNICK; I open up by talking about the probability of the Twins trading 1B Justin Morneau and OF Josh Willingham and how the Twins may not be in a hurry to deal them. I then talk to former Cubs, Reds, Rockies and Brewers OF/ 1B Brooks Kieschnick about being drafted in the 1st round of the 1993 draft, never getting a chance to get 500 ABs for the Cubs and being taken in the expansion draft by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. We also talk about being a two way player (pitcher and position player) and how revolutionary his place in baseball was at the time. I then talk about the LOOGYs and why they have to be experienced to be effective, how it is not a surprise that the Pirates have taken their game to the next level and Ryne Duren, the original "Wild Thing." I finish off by sending by condolences to the family of former MLB pitcher Justin Miller and play the interview I recorded with his this past February
Longtime play-by-play announcer Paul Olden is currently the public address announcer for the new Yankee Stadium. He's been the only PA announcer since the new Stadium opened in 2009. His storied career started in southern California. Over the years he has called games for ESPN, the then-Cleveland Indians, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the New York Yankees, New York Jets, Los Angeles Rams, UCLA Bruins, and even more. He was a WFAN sports anchor when Seth Everett was an intern at the station in the summer of 1994. They were together when calls started coming in about a possible OJ Simpson murder case. He also was the reporter who interviewed Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda and infamously asked what he thought of Dave Kingman's performance. He is also an avid photographer and went back to school in his 50s. This episode was recorded before Game 5 of the 2022 American League Division Series between the Yankees and Cleveland Guardians.
As we head deeper into MLB's postseason excitement, it's a perfect time for Mike to sit down with former Major League pitcher Jim “The Rookie” Morris. Jim shares many of the obstacles he overcame in life, and is a real-life example that it is never too late for God to work, even through the most painful and least likely places in our lives.Jim Morris is no stranger to big dreams. Since he was five years old, he passionately yearned to play baseball in the major leagues. However, despite all his hard work and determination, a series of unfortunate events and injuries scuttled his career before he was twenty-five. Doctors told him he would never play again. Then, at age thirty-five—after a string of highly implausible events and at an age when most players are retiring—Morris found himself on the mound as a relief pitcher for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. His return to the game was so incredible that Disney made his story into aheartwarming film—The Rookie—with Jim portrayed by Dennis Quaid. It was released to popular acclaim and was a huge box office success. It won the ESPY for Best Sports Movie in 2002 and the CAMIE award for Character and Morality in Entertainment.Morris is the author of two books, with his most recent release entitled Dream Makers. It picks up where The Rookie left off. This compelling memoir explores the untapped territory of Morris' life, including his contentious relationship with his father, his incessant and grueling struggle with pain and addiction, the mentorship with his wise and loving grandfather who kept him grounded, and the resolve and faith that drove him to overcome every tribulation. Dream Makers explores the transformative power of surrounding yourself with the best, most accomplished people possible—inspiring you to overcome life's obstacles and achieve your dreams.

What's in a game? Specifically, the MLB game played on May 6, 2000, between the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the Boston Red Sox which featured a pitchers' duel with Pedro Martinez and Steve Trachsel. We answer that question as we speak with Bob Ryan, Bill Chuck, and Steve Trachsel. Not to be outdone, the second half of the show features an interview with The Grill Dads which will make you laugh and want to cook, all at the same time. Bob Ryan was a spectator at the game and it is his scorecard which appears in the book he co-authored with Bill Chuck, In Scoring Position: 40 Years of a Baseball Love Affair, that sparked the idea of a discussion on this particularly incredible game. Ryan is a member of five Halls of Fame for his sportswriting. In addition, he is a recipient of the Associated Press sports editor's Red Smith Award "For Extended Meritorious Labor in the Art of Sports Journalism," and the PEN Award "For Literary Excellence in Sportswriting." He has also been featured on various ESPN programs for over three decades, including, the current show, Around the Horn. Bill Chuck recently joined us on episode 139 to discuss his latest book, In Scoring Position: 40 Years Of A Baseball Love Affair, which he co-authored with Bob Ryan. That is 139 episodes too late as we wish we had known Bill when we first started the show, almost five years ago. Bill is a baseball writer and researcher and has a weekly column in the Chicago Sun-Times. He feels lucky to have found us, but that feeling goes both ways, as we are so fortunate to have him on again and will have him back as many times as he will say yes. Bill knows baseball and loves the game. Steve Trachsel was a Major League pitcher for 16 years. Primarily known for his time with the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets, it is the May 6, 2000 game he played for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park which we discuss. In that game, Trachsel was masterful as he struck out 11 batters in a complete game 1-0 gem; outdueling future Hall of Famer, Pedro Martinez who K'd 17 hitters. Steve was a previous guest on episode 127 and discussed his remarkable baseball career, which included the ability to remain on the field and give his teams well-pitched innings, usually throwing more than 200 per year. He takes us into the game as we get to see it played from his perspective. This is a rare treat that was not lost on us or either of our guests, Bob and Bill. Ryan Fey and Mark Anderson are known as The Grill Dads. After winning Guy's Big Project, hosted by Guy Fieri they starred in the prime-time shows, The Grill Dads and Comfort Food Tour on the Food Network. They have also appeared on Beat Bobby Flay, The Wendy Williams Show, The Today Show, and the Howard Stern Wrap-Up Show. Their latest project is the incredibly funny cookbook, The Best Grilling Cookbook Ever Written By Two Idiots. The book has recipes that will expand your grilling repertoire while making food you will thoroughly enjoy. Fey and Mark are two best friends who are both from the world of advertising and love to cook. It is that friendship, love of cooking, creativity, and excellent senses of humor that are making The Grill Dads a brand you will want to know and this cookbook one you will want to own. You should never trade with the Tampa Bay (Devil) Rays, says Joe, as the old moniker tends to come back in negotiations, evidenced by their Paredes/Meadows swap. What do Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio and Tampa Bay Devil Rays pitcher Jason Adam have in common? They lend credence to the dumb-jock stereotype. Episode #133 features Chef, Reuben Harley aka Big Rube and New York Yankees Public Address Announcer, Paul Olden, and an Extra Special Rant from Co-host, Jeff Reuben Harley is known to everyone as Big Rube. We invited him on to discuss the product he created, Diamond Dirt Rub which is perfect for your grilled foods and can be found at baseballbbq.com https://baseballbbq.com/products/big-rubes-diamond-dirt-rub. Big Rube's love of fashion and baseball helped turn a passion for throwback jerseys into the marketing plan that helped Mitchell & Ness cross over from a niche supplier of old jerseys to older men into a pop-culture phenomenon. Throughout his career, Big Rube has used cooking to fuel his passion, selling homemade cakes, operating a food truck, and cooking in pop-ups to satisfy hungry customers. Over many acts of a varied career, Big Rube has become an accomplished photographer, a fashion designer, and a sought-after chef. We talk about so many things, including his mother being a seamstress for Muhammad Ali's wife, his grandfather driving Jackie Robinson, his 35-year friendship with Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff, and his decision not to appear in their music video as to not lose out on tip money, and the perfect Philly Cheesesteak which he makes and serves at Philadelphia's, Pitchers Pub. Paul Olden has had an incredible and distinguished career in the world of sports, which has led him to his current position as public address announcer for the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. The journey has included working as a radio and television play-by-play announcer for the Yankees, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, California Angels, Cleveland Indians, Philadelphia Eagles, UCLA Bruins, Los Angeles Rams, New York Jets, New Jersey Nets, and ESPN as well as serving as a sports update guy for WFAN radio. Paul is another of our guests who have been a target of an infamous profanity-laden rant from the late, Los Angeles Dodgers manager, Tommy Lasorda. From 1994 to 2005, Paul worked as the Super Bowl public address announcer. We discuss all of this and so much more as Paul leads us through his wonderful life and career. Between the two interviews, Jeff has a rant you will not want to miss. Baseball and BBQ Episode #127 features former MLB pitcher, Steve Trachsel and special guest co-host/champion pitmaster, Doug Scheiding. Trachsel enjoys talking baseball, but he seems to really love talking about barbecue and wine. Great baseball and barbecue talk are found here. Steve Trachsel was a Major League pitcher for 16 years. Known primarily for his time with the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets, he also played for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Baltimore Orioles. His baseball journey includes being a once-proud member of the Long Beach State Dirtbags and playing in the College World Series. Steve hit three career home runs and his first was hit off of Curt Schilling. He possessed an incredible ability to remain on the field and give his teams well-pitched innings, usually throwing more than 200 per year. His bobblehead is rare, and it is one of the most sought after at the New York Mets Fantasy Camp. 16 years in the Major Leagues are bound to produce some memorable moments and excellent stories, and Steve has tons of them, including giving up Mark McGwire's record-breaking 62nd home run in 1998 and his feelings on Sammy Sosa and his other teammates reactions. Steve was once nicknamed the "Human Rain Delay" and he discusses how it bothered him at first, but later embraced it and now uses it to his advantage. Even how he chose his uniform number is a good story. A lover of barbecue and wine (he even has a wonderful story about visiting Tom Seaver's California Vineyard), Steve is thrilled to talk with Doug and pepper him with lots of really good barbecue talk and some very good questions.
