In order to catch a really great wave, 100 foot or otherwise, you need to be extremely patient, waiting for that next great “set” (group of waves) that's going to put you in position for the ride of the day — or ride of your life. It's also true for those making films about surfing, including director Chris Smith (“American Movie”) and the massively talented — and patient — team behind the hugely successful series, “100 Foot Wave,” which, this year, dropped its third, and, in some ways, most ambitious season yet.   Executive Producer Joe Lewis (“Fleabag”, “Transparent”) returns to “Top Docs” to discuss the third season of this epic series, which follows big wave surfing icon Garrett McNamara, his wife Nicole, and a thoroughly engaging cast of characters as they span the globe, chasing those elusive giant waves. Joe describes the devastating experience for the community when surfing legend Marcio Freire loses his life at Nazare and the once-in-a-decade opportunity that arrives out of the blue for Garrett and his tightknit group to surf at mythical Cortes Bank in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Ultimately, through a seemingly endless pursuit of surfing dreams, it turns out that the greatest rewards for these restless souls may be waiting for them back home.   “100 Foot Wave, Season 3” is available for streaming on HBO Max. The film is nominated for the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series, Outstanding Cinematography for a Nonfiction Program, Outstanding Picture Editing for a Nonfiction Program, Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Nonfiction Program, and Outstanding Sound Editing for a Nonfiction or Reality Program.   Follow: @JoeLewis on Instagram and X @topdocspod on Instagram and X    “Top Docs” is now on YouTube!   Hidden Gem: “Burden of Dreams”   The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.

Bridget Everett’s last meal takes us to New Orleans’ second oldest restaurant, where Creole and Italian cooking collide into a cuisine called (you guessed it) Italian Creole! The owner of Pascal’s Manale, Dickie Brennan, joins the show to talk about the special menu and the restaurant’s long history. Bridget performed her delightfully raunchy cabaret act for years before landing the lead role on HBO Max’s Somebody Somewhere (and she still performs it!), but she made a living working in restaurants. We talk about the highs and lows of her 30-year restaurant career, and when she was able to quit. And she tells host Rachel Belle how she learned to cook on national television. Both Bridget and her character on Somebody Somewhere love ordering “French toast for the table” at The Chef, a diner in Manhattan, Kansas. Is French toast actually French? We learn its origin story from Max Miller, host of Tasting History. Watch Rachel’s Cascade PBS TV show The Nosh with Rachel Belle - Season 2 out now! Production Design doesn't always get the laugh — but on Hacks, Rob Tokarz helps set up the punchline. This week on Below the Line, Production Designer Rob Tokarz joins Skid to discuss Rob's Emmy-nominated work on Hacks, the HBO Max comedy that just wrapped its fourth season. Rob shares how the show's design evolved with Deborah and Ava's careers — from Vegas casinos to LA sound stages — and how visual comedy can live in the details. Among the highlights: Designing Deborah's late night talk show set — and how its clean lines, reflective surfaces, and scale marked a new chapter in her career Leaning into sleek, showbiz artifice while still grounding scenes in emotional truth How Rob approaches “passive comedy” through shape, scale, texture, and layout Collaborating with Showrunners Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky to ensure that design and comedy worked hand in hand Designing new spaces like Jimmy's office and the Home Shopping Network studio Working with returning directors, DPs, and department heads to maintain visual continuity Navigating studio notes and shifting production goals across multiple seasons Rob also shares how Hacks maintained character integrity even as its world kept expanding — and why no design detail is too small when you're playing for laughs.

A wide range of reviews, plus we're delighted to be back with movie news, on this week's Breakfast All Day podcast. We begin with a movie that we know so many of you are excited about: "Weapons," writer-director Zach Cregger's follow-up to "Barbarian" from 2022. This is a spoiler-free review, because one of the best parts of "Weapons" is not knowing anything about "Weapons." Just trust us when we tell you it's nuts, and you should see it. We'll have a LIVE spoiler chat at our YouTube channel at Noon Pacific time on Tuesday, Aug. 12, so come back then and we'll get into it. In theaters. Next up is a movie the whole family can see and enjoy: "Freakier Friday," which comes 22 years after "Freaky Friday," which was itself a remake of the 1976 Disney favorite. Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are back for more body-swap shenanigans. We laughed a lot more than we expected. The pacing is lively and the cast is game. In theaters. Then we catch up with the documentary "Billy Joel: And So It Goes," which we missed when it came out because we were both traveling. This is a two-part, five-hour exploration of this enduring musical artist, and it will make you appreciate Joel's songs on a deeper level. So many hits, and the stories behind them are fascinating. Streaming on HBO Max. Finally, it's our first Movie News LIVE! in a long time. Lots to talk about, including "The Wizard of Oz" at Sphere in Las Vegas, "Hamilton" playing in theaters, Dean Cain trying to be an ICE agent and more. We promise to be more consistent with these now that we're both back in town. Rob investigates the HBO Max mortician doc that's more horrifying than any horror movie, Jamie shares her take on breastfeeding etiquette and scented tampons (seriously), and the duo debate whether your kid is secretly watching boobs online. Plus: what it really means when a guy buys you floral tampons, Rob's Space Needle conspiracy theory, dodging poop during labor and the headshot trauma of child actors, and Rob's candid memory lane with Mr. Kanye West. It's chaotic, it's hilarious, it's slightly informative, and it smells like hibiscus. Have a question for Rob and Jamie?
