Join us for a behind-the-scenes conversation with the Oscar-nominated sound team behind “One Battle After Another,” as they share how they shaped the film's world through sound—from intimate character moments to large-scale action. They discuss what it takes to capture great audio on set, build powerful sequences in post, and blending dialogue, effects, and music into a mix that plays on the biggest screens — plus how their collaboration with Paul Thomas Anderson guided the sonic identity of the movie from start to finish. “Knowing Paul [Thomas Anderson] — and knowing any director — something happens on set, sound-wise and [in] production, and [if] you don't have a reference for it… it could potentially be a problem. You have the cars — the actual cars — you have the drivers, you have the road, you have the permits. Can we just spend a little time and try and get some good recordings of these vehicles? Because they're going to be really useful. It's such an iconic sequence. People are like, ‘oh man, that chase at the end of the movie is amazing.' And we worked and worked and worked on that sequence trying to find what that was supposed to be.” —Chris Scarabosio, Re-recording Mixer, Supervising Sound Editor, and Sound Designer, “One Battle After Another” Joining today's conversation: - José Antonio García - Production Sound Mixer - Tony Villaflor - Re-recording Mixer - Chris Scarabosio - Re-recording Mixer, Supervising Sound Editor, and Sound Designer Be sure to check out “One Battle After Another,” now streaming on HBO Max, in Dolby Vision® and Dolby Atmos®. In this solo episode, Dr. Marianne Miller explores how the Emmy-winning and Golden Globe–winning medical drama The Pitt portrays eating disorders, emergency medicine, and bias in ways that feel both culturally meaningful and clinically relevant. She reflects on how the show separates two critical themes across seasons: the medical system's tendency to miss eating disorders in Black women, and the role of weight bias in emergency department diagnosis and care. Drawing from years of clinical experience, Dr. Miller discusses how many clients first encounter medical crisis in emergency rooms, often because of dangerously low heart rates, dizziness, fainting, or other complications linked to disordered eating. She explains how ER responses vary widely, and how bias, time pressure, and assumptions about body size or race can shape whether clinicians recognize eating disorder symptoms. The episode highlights a season two storyline in which a Black woman presents to the ER without classic eating disorder signs, making diagnosis more complex. Dr. Marianne examines why missing textbook symptoms often leads clinicians to overlook bulimia and other eating disorders, especially in populations that medicine historically underdiagnoses. She also reflects on how the show names this reality directly and why that representation matters for visibility, validation, and future care. Dr. Marianne then turns to season one's depiction of a physician challenging a resident's assumption that body weight predicts health. She explores how medical weight bias affects diagnosis, delays treatment, and reinforces stigma in emergency medicine. She also shares the change she wishes the episode had made, noting that many people with bulimia live in bodies that are not thin, and that anti-fat bias and racial bias together create additional barriers for Black women seeking care. Throughout the episode, Dr. Marianne centers a liberation-informed lens that honors intersectionality, context, nervous system safety, and autonomy in eating disorder recovery. She invites listeners to consider how accurate media representation can shift clinical awareness and expand who medicine recognizes as deserving care. You can watch The Pitt on HBO and HBO Max. Topics Covered in This Episode Eating disorders in Black women Missed diagnosis in emergency medicine Low heart rate and medical risk in eating disorders Bulimia without classic symptoms Medical weight bias in ER care Race, stigma, and underdiagnosis Media representation and clinical awareness Liberation-informed eating disorder therapy Related Episodes Boundaries, Therapy While Black, & Eating Disorders with Kaela Farrise, LMFT on Apple and Spotify. In this episode of Quakers Today, host Peterson Toscano explores how we can remain steady when the world feels like it is spinning out of control. We revisit a vital conversation with Australian activist and Quaker Adrian Glamorgan about activism, despair, and finding our specific leadings. We also hear from Kat Griffith on the spiritual work required to bridge deep political divides in rural communities. Peterson also shares a personal reflection on the "chemistry of fear" and how the choice to love is a practical move against alienation. This Season of Quakers Today is sponsored by: Friends Fiduciary American Friends Service Committee The Chemistry of Fear and the Choice to Love Peterson reflects on a message received during Quaker worship regarding the physiological impact of fear. Drawing on research and the wisdom of bell hooks, he discusses how fear narrows the mind and fuels "structures of domination." “The choice to love is a choice to connect—to find ourselves in the ‘Other.'” — Peterson Toscano Remaining Steady with Adrian Glamorgan We revisit words from Adrian Glamorgan, the Asia and West Pacific Section Executive Secretary of the Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC). Host Victor opens by previewing the podcast's current coverage: HBO's Industry (focus of this episode), The Pitt on HBO Max, Apple TV+'s Drops of God, and a Christopher Nolan rewatch ahead of The Odyssey (with upcoming discussion of Insomnia). He also mentions upcoming premieres including Paradise, which remains the podcast's most popular show. mailto:needssomeintroduction@gmail.com Victor calls Industry's episode “Dear Henry” an elite, event-packed installment that feels like a season finale while resolving little. He follows up on last week's revelation that Tender is effectively a Ponzi scheme by outlining real-world analogs: the FTX collapse (FTX/Alameda circular self-inflation via the FTT token), Germany's Wirecard fraud (manufactured transactions, overpaying for acquisitions, auditors' failures, and political/regulatory protection including actions against Financial Times reporting), and Theranos as a charisma-driven deception. He also notes money-laundering examples involving Ghana and argues the show's broader theme is the emptiness of a culture fixated on wealth, valuation, and belief-driven “truth,” raising questions about how much corporate value is overstated and whether society celebrates con men. Joined by Darren, they first discuss the Game of Thrones prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (episodes 1–5), praising its intimacy, sets, humor, acting, and a brutal recent battle episode, and noting its short season and fast production cadence. They then break down “Dear Henry”: Harper warns Yasmin that she and Henry were duped by Whitney, and while Yasmin reacts defensively, the warning sinks in. Whitney's unsettling dynamic with Henry escalates (including a bathroom/shower moment and later clubbing), while Henry grows suspicious about Tender's audit and Whitney's manipulation. Sweetpea's public takedown presentation at an Alpha conference drives Tender's stock down sharply and impresses Eric, who watches with pride. In Ghana, a planned whistleblower meeting is disrupted when Whitney arrives first and intimidates the potential source (Tony), reinforcing fears of more dangerous forces behind Tender. Later, Whitney is revealed to be using a fabricated identity (a Lithuanian passport is shown) and a conversation indicates Russian-linked backers are laundering money through Tender, trapping Whitney and raising the stakes for everyone. They discuss Whitney's use of high-end escorts as tools for access and influence; Hayley confirms she and others were planted around key figures and that sex acts were recorded, confronting Yasmin with how they were exploited. Eric receives a compromising video involving an underage girl (“Dolly”) while with his daughter, but still appears on TV to push for a new audit, warning Whitney not to corner him and implying he could expose Whitney. Henry fires an auditor and tries to assert control as CEO, while Whitney continues drafting a “Dear Henry” letter about a “hole in the bucket,” revealed as a cash-flow/shortfall problem. The episode culminates in Eric meeting Harper with a lawyer present; he asks only for his original investment back to be put in trusts for his daughters if the short pays off, suggesting he may be planning to exit entirely. Eric admits he felt genuine pride watching Sweetpea, more than he expected he could feel, and the final image of him walking alone fuels Victor and Darren's concern about possible suicide or at least Eric's departure from the show. They close by anticipating two remaining Industry episodes, the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms finale, and the upcoming launch of Paradise, while noting Darren will be traveling and will catch up later. 00:00 Welcome & What We're Covering This Week (Industry, The Pit, Drops of God, Nolan Rewatch) 02:36 Why This Week's Industry Episode ‘Dear Henry' Feels Like a Finale 03:20 Tender as a Ponzi: Looking for Real-World Analogs 05:24 FTX Explained: The Circular Token House of Cards 10:27 Wirecard: The Closer European Parallel (Fraud, Audits, Politics) 18:26 More Scams & Money Laundering Threads: Theranos, Ghana, and Beyond 19:59 What Industry Is Really Saying: The Emptiness of Wealth Culture 23:49 Darren Joins: Quick Detour Into the New GoT Prequel ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' 39:41 Back to Industry: First Impressions, Then Scene-by-Scene Breakdown Begins (Yasmin & Harper) 42:46 Yasmin vs. Harper: Self-Made Power vs. Riding Coattails 43:32 Trailer Talk: Are Harper & Yasmin Two Sides of the Same Coin? 45:48 Whitney's Shower Ambush & the ‘Hole in the Bucket' Letter 49:44 Boarding School ‘Experimentation' and Henry's Growing Suspicion 52:12 Whitney's Intimate Manipulation: Touch, Jealousy, and Control 57:03 Political Satire + Real-World Scam Parallels (FTX, Wirecard, Theranos) 01:01:35 ‘Too Big to Fail' Lies: Can a Fake World Hold Together? 01:03:06 Clubbing, Relapse Energy, and Henry's Night Spirals 01:05:53 Was Jim's Overdose a Setup? A day in the life of a women's reproductive healthcare center is unlike any other. In this post-Roe world, potential danger lurks in the dark or right out in the open. In the tense and nuanced Oscar-nominated documentary short “The Devil Is Busy” (directed by Christalyn Hampton and Geeta Gandbhir), we follow Tracii, the head of security at an Atlanta women's health clinic, as she goes through her routine to ensure that no physical harm comes to those seeking care or dispensing it. Christalyn and producer Rose Arce join Ken on the pod to discuss the intense stress facing Tracii, her colleagues, and the clinic's patients (referred to as “guests”), many of whom have traveled hundreds of miles for an appointment at one of the few remaining abortion providers in the region. Over the course of the film, we learn more about Tracii, the difficult decisions she has had to face, and the role that religion and a forgiving God play in her life. Countering the shrill voices of the male anti-abortion protestors outside, Tracii's simple acts of kindness transform an average day into something extraordinary. “The Devil Is Busy” has been nominated for the Oscar for Best Documentary Short. It can be streamed on HBO MAX. The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix. Follow: @cwdivadance and @rose_marie_arce on Instagram @topdocspod on Instagram and twitter
Die Serie „A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms“ nähert sich ihrem ersten Staffelfinale. This week, I discuss my review of Peacock's Super Bowl stream, which was executed flawlessly, along with some of the limited viewership numbers released to date. I also detail the new live TV bundles from YouTube TV, the launch of HBO Max in the UK and Ireland and a new bundle from Sky that includes Disney+, HBO Max, Netflix, and Hayu. I cover earnings results from Roku (full-year revenue up 15%), AMC Networks (AMC+ price increase), Optimum (lost 49,000 pay-TV subs), Amagi (which had its IPO last month) and positive earnings from Fastly and Cloudflare, with Fastly stock up 116% in the week of earnings. Finally, with the hyperscalers projected to collectively spend close to $700 billion in capex in 2026, I break down what we are seeing in the bond market for their capital raise, the risks, and why analysts expect free cash flow to plummet this year.Podcast produced by Security Halt Media

Negotiating love feels responsible until you realize it is costing you your self-respect. For many gay men over 40, relationships quietly turn into endurance tests disguised as commitment. You tolerate distance. You excuse confusion. You call chemistry connection and safety love. In this eve before Valnetines Day episode, Rick Clemons exposes the heated rivalry (with cheeky, but wise observations from the HBO Max series by the same name) playing out beneath your dating patterns. The fight between choosing comfort or choosing truth. This conversation cuts through avoidance, people-pleasing, and half-choices that keep men stuck repeating the same emotional loop. You will walk away clearer about where you are negotiating, why honesty feels risky, and what changes when you stop disappearing in the name of love. It's about seeing your own bullshit clearly enough to stop flirting with half-choices. This is the Perfect Detour moment where you stop negotiating and start living like you mean it. Key takeaways: Endurance is not devotion. If love requires you to disappear, you're not committed — you're negotiating.Chemistry opens the door. Capacity determines whether love stays. Most men keep choosing heat over honesty.Truth builds intimacy faster than approval ever will.Being lovable keeps you safe. Being honest makes you alive. About Rick Rick Clemons is a kick-ass coach, captivating speaker, and tell-it-like-it-is podcast host bringing a no-nonsense approach for gay men over 40 to see their own bullshit, stop flirting with decisions, hook up with life, and never go back. If you're still explaining your life, you're not ready for Rick. His line in the sand is simple: stop negotiating, or stop pretending you want more. Stop Negotiating Your Gay Life After 40. English folk (AKA non-Amish) try to go Amish for 30 days, and somehow the producers found the least prepared humans for the task. They even found an Amish cosplayer, and even THEY were completely unprepared. The culture clash is real, the struggles are hilarious, and we're here for every chaotic second of it. Love isn't soft this week — it's sharp. In Valentine's Week Horror History (Feb 9–15), we trace the anniversaries where romance curdles into obsession, suburbia turns sinister, and the holiday's heart-shaped sheen hides something mean underneath.Inside this episode (Quick Hits + Spotlight):Feb 11, 1981 — My Bloody Valentine: blue-collar slasher dread in a mining town where the tunnels feel alive and the “tradition” is murder. (U.S. this week: free via Kanopy / buy-rent on major VOD.) Feb 13, 2009 — Friday the 13th (reboot): Jason's modern-era brutality — fast, nasty, and built like a greatest-hits mixtape of the franchise's worst impulses. (U.S. this week: Netflix and Tubi, plus VOD.) Feb 14, 1991 — The Silence of the Lambs: prestige terror and psychological horror that changed the culture — and proved “thriller” can still be nightmare fuel. (U.S. this week: AMC+.) Feb 13, 2019 — Happy Death Day 2U: time-loop mayhem with real heart and a wicked sense of humor. (U.S. this week: HBO Max.) Deep-Cut Spotlight:Feb 12, 1975 — The Stepford Wives: no monster suit required — just a perfect town, perfect smiles, and a nightmare hiding behind domestic bliss. (U.S. this week: Tubi.) Birthday Roll (4): Emma Roberts (1991), Natalie Dormer (1982), Simon Pegg (1970), Claire Bloom (1931).Weekly Recommendation (Valentine's “bouquet” stack): Misery (1990) (MGM+), Audition (1999), The Fly (1986) (Tubi), plus modern Valentine carnage with Heart Eyes (2025) (Netflix) and Companion (2025) (HBO Max). If you like your romance with slashers, psychological dread, body horror, and suburban nightmares, this week's timeline is a whole box of chocolates… and at least one of them bites back.
In this episode, we review the first batch of episodes from the second season of the hit HBO Max original series The Pitt, starring Noah Wyle. We discuss how the new season begins over the July 4th weekend and how that setting plays a role in the new patients we see. We also debate whether we like some of the new cast members on the hospital team and how their roles may develop over the rest of the season.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
