#081. THE LAST OF US (S1 - 2023) REVIEWAirdate: March 22, 2023The Last of Us, based on the successful Naughty Dog video game for Playstation, hit HBO Max in 2023. The highly anticipated series stars Pedro Pascal (Joel) and Bella Ramsey (Ellie) in a tale of infection, greed, and the fall of mankind. Did it live up to the hype surrounding it? How close did it follow the game's storyline? Did they include the DLC? There were so many questions going into this, and Forever Fangirls needed answers.**Spoiler Warning**If you'd like the show notes, see the trailer or links mentioned in this episode, head to:https://www.foreverfangirls.com/episode081/ Leave a 90s Message: https://www.speakpipe.com/ForeverFangirlsPodcastFollow Forever Fangirls: https://linktr.ee/ForeverFanPod
Dead Man's Hand. With the last of The Last of Us finished for the season and HBO Max succumbing to bloaters, it's time to find another show, and what's more promising than Rian Johnson and Natasha Lyonne creating a modern day Columbo. Shelby brings her sister back to the pod so they can talk about their feelings around video games, zombies, and Pedro Pascal's mustache in their riotous review of HBO Max's The Last of Us. It's a lot of laughs for a dark, post-apocalytic, fungi trip of the flesh eating variety, but that's just how some of us cope. Listen for all their thoughts on the show, the reviews, and the episode by episode recounting two sisters can't always agree on. And yes there is no Pop Culture Roundup this week entirely because Shelby is avoiding spoilers for Taylor Swift's tour. We'll be back to our regularly scheduled programming next week!

Hey there lovely listeners! It's not Wine Wednesday, so think of this as a Sunday surprise instead. Candi and I are entering the home stretch of our coverage of HBO's The Last of Us with our discussion about episodes 7 and 8. We share our thoughts on getting more insight into Ellie's backstory in episode 7 and the discovery that she has much more in common with Joel than we understood. We then move on to episode 8 and the evil cult. We're always here for Ellie saving herself, but we did think there was some room for improvement in the writing for David. It would've been nice to have a little more of a reveal of him as a villain, rather than him looking completely sketchy from the very first moment he appears. Candi had a few questions about Joel's miraculous ability to rally from his injury. Penicillin is great, but there is usually a crash after that initial feeling of improved health. As always, we talk about who was hustling backwards, the moment that felt most like a video game, and we give out a yummy chicken sandwich what we enjoyed most from the episodes. For the thirst segment, we were inspired by Riley and Ellie's first date so we discuss what our perfect date during the apocalypse would be.Thanks so much for listening! Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a great time. Keep an eye on the feed for our close out discussion of The Last of Us. We will share our thoughts on the finale and reflections on the first season as a whole.Find and follow Candi on Twitter here. Support the showFollow the pod on IG and Twitter.

Have you been watching this HBO MAX series? It is based on the action-adventure video game from 2013 by Naughty Dog. We admit we've never played the video games. However, our SPECIAL GUEST has. Add the mint leaves and sugar. Add ice, vodka, club soda, prosecco and lime juice to a cocktail mixer and shake. Garnish with strawberry slices and more mint. Enjoy!Note: For the episode I muddled fruit and mint in each glass. However, I didn't love mine during the recording of the episode. Was it the gin? or that I left out the LIME by accident. It's what happens when I'm focused on too many things at once i.e. family dinner, podcast set-up and not using recipe or note cards. I ended up re-making the cocktail after we were done recording w/vodka and exactly how recipe said to prepare. Summary: Hop on board, buckle up, and stow your luggage, folks - we're in transit today! Whether by plane, train or automobile, travel can open up a lot of possibilities for characters across genres. Holly and Devin talk through the “closed door” atmosphere transit can bring to a story, and how physical travel can augment the metaphorical evolution of character arcs with a more unique twist. Topics Discussed: The Dagger (9:10): Holly discussed Bullet Train by Kotaro Isaka, a novel that follows the perilous train ride of five highly motivated assassins, the principal of which is Nanao, aka Ladybug. Boarding a bullet train from Tokyo to Morioka, Ladybug is given one simple task - grab a suitcase and get off at the next step. Things quickly devolve as he is met with competition, challenge, and various murder attempts. Holly's key takeaways were: This novel takes the time to take us inside characters to understand the shame, motivations, and quirks of a grisly set of over-the-top assassins. The depth Isaka achieves adds to the satirical tone while also increasing reader investment in the outcome of the wild train ride. While rife with murder, Bullet Train is also full of humor. Nanao keeps trying and failing to get off at the next stop, people get killed and characters have to prop them up to seem like they're still alive, and accidents lead to additional problems throughout the novel. The 2022 Brad Pitt film version changed a lot of the characters' racial and gender identities, but overall it captured the spirit, plot, and humor of the original story well. The Heart (24:50): Devin discussed The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren, a novel of mishaps and undesired outcomes that leads to a destiny no one ever imagined. Olive Torres has always seen herself as unlucky, and having to survive her sister's wedding next to her arch nemesis (and the brother of the groom) Ethan is just one more bit of evidence that she's right. When all the guests (and the happy couple) get food poisoning except for Olive and Ethan, they agree to go on the honeymoon so as not to waste the trip. Devin's key takeaways were: Olive and Ethan's mutual animosity was born from a misunderstanding and simple miscommunication. By traveling to Hawaii together and escaping their typical routines, they're both afforded space and a different perspective to begin to reconcile their differences. A combination of The Hating Game and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, this novel is full of hijinks, forced proximity, and miscommunication that ultimately allows both protagonists to reframe and transform their perception of reality. All it took was bad buffet food and a faux honeymoon to Hawaii. Trigger Warning: there are consistent references to body, physical beauty, and allusions to body dysmorphia that any reader, and especially those with a history or sensitivity to eating disorders, should be aware of. Ali Baluch (@baluchx) started his career in video on YouTube — by joining FouseyTube in its early days. Ali worked with Yousef to take the channel from 500k to 10m (and over 1.5b views), creating one of the early YouTube phenomenons (which I learned was..stunted!). Ali's journey in production and cinematography is a journey that spans through household names like Nickelodeon, HBO Max, and MTV. And outside of those names, Ali is behind a few podcasts (The Apartment and the Fahim Anwar Dance Hour) where he chats with some of the most popular names in the industry. What is Ali up to next? More film, he suspects. This is a chilling-with-friends-in-your-living room type of episode, with more of a hair down vibe than the typical epi. The backstory is that Ali is a friend who came by to chat about a media project on a Friday night. I asked Ali to record a pod in return, so I have the very rare in person epi. With a lot of Friday night, barely made it through the week a (childcare fell through at home, work was demanding as usual) laughs. What makes this episode even more funny is that Ali is a professional video and audio dude — and I have him sharing a mic on a MacBook pro as my setup. Enjoy! I did.
