Interview with Alec Peters from Axanar Productions.
With just 11 days before the start of a copyright infringement trial, Axanar Productions and Alec Peters announced they had settled the lawsuit brought against them by CBS and Paramount Pictures. It was a case that had taken many twists and turns, ultimately revealing in court filings that the "Independent Star Trek Film" was out of money, having spent $1,400,000.00 with nothing to show for it. Joining us to talk about the settlement is screenwriter and producer Carlos Pedraza--the principal behind AxaMonitor.com--the fact-checking and reporting that was created in the wake of the lawsuit against Axanar Productions and Alec Peters. He is also a former educator, Associated Press writer, and Fan Film Producer---three past lives which have all added a unique and wonderful perspective to his coverage of this whole mess. We'll discuss what this agreement means for the beleaguered production and what will happen to the film itself. Plus, we'll discuss the potential ramifications for Star Trek fans who donated to the crowdfunding and what recourse they might have. We'll also pose questions to Carlos from our Official Facebook Group, Camp Khitomer! SPECIAL THANKS We can't thank FIVE YEAR MISSION enough. We are truly grateful to them for allowing us to use their music for every episode of Trek Geeks. You really should check them out--they're writing and recording one original song for each episode of the classic Star Trek series from the 1960's. Warp on over to their website at FiveYearMission.net and check out all of their fantastic albums! You can hear them all: Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, The Trouble with Tribbles, and of course, the amazing Spock's Brain! Plus, here is a little secret...they are working on Year 4 right now! Here’s a rundown of the Five Year Mission songs you'll hear in this episode! Alec Peters is calling it a victory. But is it? Word came out last week that CBS and Paramount had reached a settlement with Peters and Axanar Productions in the copyright infringement lawsuit. Just days before they were set to go to trial, they issued a joint announcement that a bargain had been put in place. Axanar had to admit to overreaching with their original production, but they can still move forward as long as they stay within the new official guidelines from CBS. We take a look at what's public about the deal and discuss what it could mean not only for Axanar, but for fan films in other franchises moving forward.

They speak with June Grasso on Bloomberg Radio's "Bloomberg Law."

In this week's episode, we'll take an in-depth look at the new Fan Film Guidelines released by CBS last week! These guidelines seem to change fan films as we know them--and they're all the result of one production's actions. For months, Axanar Productions has complained that there were no guidelines. Their constant complaining has prompted CBS to give them exactly what they wanted--and now all fan films will have to pay the price. Be careful what you wish for, right? There are still a lot of unknowns in this process, but we'll examine the new rules as fans and what we believe they translate to. Plus, there is a LOT of huge news in this episode: Blu-Ray returns, a new Star Trek Beyond trailer, RIHANNA...it's all in Episode 65: The Axanar Rules! SPECIAL THANKS There just aren't enough words to convey our gratitude to FIVE YEAR MISSION for allowing us to use their music in every episode of our podcast! They are a fantastic group of guys and we're excited to see them on stage at Creation Entertainment's 50th Anniversary Celebration at the Official Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas this August! Five straight days of Five Year Mission--we feel spoiled! Prepare yourself, though--head on over to FiveYearMission.net and get ALL of their music. We promise, you'll love it. Continuing our discussions of the Paramount/CBS vs. Axanar Productions, Star Athletica vs. Varsity Brands, and the take-down of X-Men: Danger Room Protocols.Michael Hinman, editor-in-chief of 1701News, joins our panel in an examination of the Star Trek: Axanar production, how it's become the focus of the copyright protection efforts on the part of Paramount Pictures and CBS Television. Is Alec Peters in the right? Is Axanar just a fan film? Is it a threat to Star Trek Beyond? Or is it more the fact that Peters & Company are building a commercial enterprise using the reputation of Star Trek?Plus: if copyright law covers the design of a cheerleader uniform, what impact could that have on the cosplay community? Especially considering that some cosplayers are actually profiting (at least a little bit...) from their work/play in cosplay, will movie costumes fall under copyright protection? Will cosplayers take a hit?

While we were away on our holiday break, there were a few...uh...developments...in the world of Star Trek, too. The first trailer for Star Trek Beyond was released along with Star Wars: The Force Awakens! We'll break down what we thought of it--AND why we're not freaking out yet. We're also going to take some time to talk about the lawsuit brought against Axanar Productions by CBS and Paramount Pictures for copyright infringement. In full disclosure, we've both donated to Axanar on two different occasions. We are not attorneys and do not claim to know the intricacies of intellectual property law. There are things we’ve observed and questions/concerns was have AS DONORS that will be the focus of our discussion in today's episode. Allow us to say up front that we have absolutely no beef or problem with Alec Peters, Rob Burnett, or anyone associated with Axanar. We’ve had Alec on our podcast twice--once at our invite and once at Axanar's request. We've asked our listeners to consider donating to this project in the past, and we feel justified in asking some of these questions in the wake of the lawsuit. Let us also say that we do NOT believe that anyone associated with Axanar has done anything illegal or malfeasant in any way. That's not what this episode is about. Most importantly, we want to see the Axanar feature completed. We LOVE the concept. We LOVE the story. Truthfully, that's why we donated our money in the first place. We hope for a resolution in this dispute so the movie can be made and fans around the world can enjoy the movie. We'll also kick off our Trek50 Project for Star Trek's 50th Anniversary and YOU play a direct part in it! All you have to do is tell us about the very first time you ever watched Star Trek!
