In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Barry Ritholtz. From his early days navigating chaos on a trading desk to building a $5 billion advisory firm, Barry shares why investing is simple, but not easy—and how mastering your emotions may matter more than mastering the market. These are the lessons Barry covers in his most recent book How Not To Invest: The ideas, numbers, and behaviors that destroy wealth - and how to avoid them. Barry is the co-founder, chairman, and chief investment officer of Ritholtz Wealth Management LLC. Launched in 2013, RWM is one of the country's fastest-growing financial planning and asset management firms. Named ETF Investor of the Year and one of the Financial Times' top 300 firms, RWM manages over $5 billion for 3,900 families. Called the “blogfather” for creating The Big Picture, one of the first market weblogs, the site covers everything related to investing. Since its launch in 2003, its mix of behavioral finance and data analysis has attracted 275 million visitors. Barry is also the creator and host of Masters in Business, the longest-running and most popular podcast on Bloomberg Radio. His book, Bailout Nation, was named one of the Best Business Books of the Year, selected as the Investment Book of the Year, and awarded a First Amendment Award for Outstanding Journalism. He lives on the north shore of Long Island with his wife, Wendy, and their spoiled dogs, Teddy and Kody.
The “America First” trade is unraveling in the sweeping turmoil in global markets, with stocks acutely exposed to the US economy sinking alongside the dollar. As Wall Street’s rebellion against Donald Trump’s tariff war intensifies, traders are rushing into fixed-income havens.About $2 trillion was erased from the S&P 500, with the gauge down about 5%. The Russell 2000 of smaller firms extended its plunge from a 2021 all-time high to 20% on speculation the president’s trade offensive will stunt the American economy. The greenback slid 1.5%, reigniting the debate about its haven reputation during challenging times as the euro, yen and Swiss franc surged. Oil joined a selloff in commodities. All in, the much-vaunted America-first trade — buying up assets that win when the US outperforms the rest of the world — is reversing on concern that the steepest increase in American tariffs in a century will hammer economic growth. That’s driving a fierce rally in global bonds, sending the yield on benchmark Treasuries briefly below the closely-watched 4% level. Most other yields also tumbled as money markets priced in a 50% chance of the Federal Reserve delivering four quarter-point rate reductions this year.Trump has embraced tariffs as a tool to assert US power, revive manufacturing at home and extract geopolitical concessions. Economists say the near-term result of his measures will likely be higher US prices and slower growth, or perhaps even a recession.Listen for comprehensive coverage of the U.S. market close on Bloomberg Television, Bloomberg Radio, and YouTube with Romaine Bostick, Alix Steel, Carol Massar and Tim Stenovec.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

He runs Ritholtz Wealth Management which has been named ETF Advisor of the Year, Financial Times Top 300 Advisors, and one of America's fastest-growing RIAs. He's also the host of Masters in Business, Bloomberg Radio's most popular podcast (50+ million streams/downloads), which he started way back in 2014. In his new book, How Not To Invest, Barry emphasizes how avoiding rookie mistakes can significantly help you do better financially. He blends engaging stories with data-driven insights, and explores overlooked aspects of behavioral finance, psychology and the market. In today's episode from Merit Street: Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy have promised "large-scale firings" in the federal workforce, partly through return-to-office mandates. Most RTO mandates have the same purpose, but private companies are less transparent about the reason. The federal government is inefficient, but that's a problem of accountability and culture rather than size. Disruption at this level could foster innovation, but could also just be catastrophic. The key is how federal workers and the public react to change. 2025 will be the year of large-scale RTO mandates--not just hybrid schedules, but five days a week. In today's episode: A lot of companies are pushing return-to-office mandates as if COVID was just a blip; in reality, culture has fundamentally changed workers' relationship to work. Activity-based management requires employees to be visible at the desk, but outcome-based management is far more effective--and can be achieved without the office. The key questions: What are the results you're trying to achieve? What shared beliefs within your team are getting in the way? And will working from home help to correct those beliefs? In today's episode: Boeing's striking workers and executives are coming closer to a deal, but it's still not there yet. Boeing is a good example of a company that has focused too much on "results" in a short-time financial sense. The mistrust and resentment of its workers is now a long-term consequence. Culture can't be orchestrated from afar. Boeing's leaders need to take the lead publicly and wholeheartedly if they want to make a real change. In today's episode: Per the results pyramid, results are created by actions. Actions come from beliefs. Beliefs are shaped by experiences. To build experiences, follow the 1, 2, 3 rule: tell one story, give two people of recognition, and offer (or ask for) three pieces of feedback. When offering feedback, tie actions to beliefs and results. Highlight the beliefs you want to encourage, and how they contributed to the results you want. In today's episode: Aligning purpose, strategy, and culture drives revenue growth. A company's purpose is its reason for existing, outside of revenue, in six words or less. A stronger dollar is one of the few obstacles threatening to hamper the stock market boom which has lifted US stocks to a series of records, according to Morgan Stanley's Mike Wilson. The S&P 500 index recorded its 46th all-time closing high of 2024 on Monday as investors gear up for the latest round of corporate earnings. The benchmark ticked up again at the US market open.“One of the things that could slow down the rally again would be a strengthening dollar,” the bank's chief US equity strategist said Tuesday in an interview with Bloomberg Radio.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In today's episode: Results come from actions. Actions are driven by belief. Beliefs are built by experiences. Current results--for better or worse--are a result of existing actions, beliefs, and experiences within the company. To change results, leaders should avoid getting caught in the "action trap." Think about the experiences you want employees to have that will drive their beliefs and actions. In today's episode: The longshoremen strike is over, for now--they've agreed on a wage increase, but the automation question is still open. The union's opposition to automation isn't about fancy new technology, but things like parking gates and timecard stamping. With these tactics, they're making the argument FOR automation--if things were automated, the economy wouldn't be in this much danger.
