141 - Space: 1999 with John Kenneth Muir

The Bloody Pit

John Kenneth Muir has been writing about film and television for more than twenty-five years. His published works range in subject matter from the horror films of various decades and books focused on individual movie directors to in-depth tomes about several different science fiction television series. His first published book was about a much maligned Gerry Anderson produced science fiction show from the 1970's called Space: 1999. The two seasons of that show have recently been released on Blu-Ray by Scream Factory, reigniting my interest in engaging with its highs and lows. Forgotten by most but beloved by many Space: 1999 has always been an odd series that is somewhat difficult for a broad audience to embrace, but its finer points are extraordinary, its special effects are superb and the production rarely lacked ambition. It is a television program ripe for rediscovery even in this age of endless streaming possibilities.   Mr. Muir and I discuss the show from the perspective of a novel he wrote several years ago that uses the first season episode ‘Space Brain' as a starting point. Along the way we talk about our own history with Space: 1999 and how our opinions have changed over time. The stark differences between the first and second season are debated and we certainly engage in the age-old conversation about favorite and least favorite episodes. The scientific implausibility inherent in the show's set-up are hashed over with a number of details explained about how various writers acknowledged the biggest one within the body of their scripts. We discuss the philosophical approach taken by the show's creators and how it differs from what people expected from sci-fi TV in the 70's – and possibly today. We do get off track at one point and talk about a few horror movies, but we are soon back onto MoonBase Alpha – I promise!  If you have anything to say about Space: 1999 or any other subject we talk about in the show thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send your emails. We'll be thrilled to hear from you. Thank you for listening to the podcast.

George has never seen any Kung Fu movies... except for Kung Fu Panda. He was not ready for the awesomeness of Vinegar Syndrome Pictures' first release: New York Ninja. Luckily, Vinegar Syndrome provided us with a sneak peak at the upcoming film. And Travis and Dan stepped up to show George what magic was waiting for him in the Big Apple of the 1980s.   New York Ninja was shot in 1984, in guerilla fashion around New York, by director John Liu (In the Claws of the CIA, Dragon Blood). But it was thought to be lost to time until it was rescued by the restoration wizards at Vinegar Syndrome. Director Kurtis Spieler compiled the nearly 30 year old footage into a streamlined story. And with the help of producers including Brad Henderson, also of Vinegar Syndrome, he compiled a cast of voice actors from the exploitation and B-Movie Hall of Fame (not a real place, but it should be).    Included on the upcoming Blu-Ray release is an excellent documentary look at the process of shooting a guerilla Kung Fu project on Staten Island and around New York in the 80s. But the behind the scenes feature goes on to explain the process of creating a new movie out of the old footage. The featurette is a must-watch, and very well may be worth the price of admission!   Will George's new drinking game catch on with our listeners... (we hope not!) Will Travis ever learn to love a movie with a redubbed audio track? (don't hold your breath!) Did Dan just say "Unrelenting Crotch Hell" in... context? (He did!)   Come for the Bad Dudes vs Dragon Ninja: The Movie vibes, and stay for the Beat-It aesthetics and Pink Floyd sexy scenes. New York Ninja is one to seek out!   Coming November 1st, 2021, from Vinegar Syndrome Pictures. Available at www.vinegarsyndrome.com   *Update* The review states that the film will be released on UHD, however a Facebook post from Vinegar Syndrome states that it will be in standard Blu-ray only. Don't let that dampen your excitement. This movie is still wonderful in 1080p!   Still need a little convincing? Here's the trailer! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1wMt3fgOyM   And after the episode, check out the Extra Credit Discussion group on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/remedialfilmpod   Did you know we are now on YouTube?  It's almost Halloween, so of course, all October, the Planet 8 crew has been watching scary movies! Of course, we tend to watch scary movies all year long, but it's a little more concentrated this month, and we focus a little more on certain films this time of year. This episode we discuss what type of films get us in the "Halloween spirit" ! If you're looking for ideas for things to watch leading up to Halloween, tune in!For Chief Engineer Bob, it's all about spooky films with a comedic twist. Some of the films he likes to watch to get into a Halloween mood include the Don Knotts classic, The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, Munster Go Home,  and of course, Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein. Another great scary yet humorous film to watch is John Landis' An American Werewolf in London.Recon Officer Karen always starts with the Universal Monsters, and this year it began with Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman, which has the creepiest opening of any Universal monster film. Next up was Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, which never fails to entertain. She'll be moving on to  the Hammer films, in particular the Hammer version of The Mummy. She also watched some John Carpenter movies, The Thing and Prince of Darkness.Commander Larry has been showing his wife Jasmine a lot of films she's never seen before, but more on the lighter side. One of these was The Monster Squad, which is still entertaining and has some great updated designs for the classic monsters. He also had some Hammer films on his list, including the Hammer Phantom of the Opera.Of course we divert and digress and discuss Phantom of the Paradise, Phantasm, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Milpitas Monster (really, we swear), and many others! For the Sensor Sweep, Bob came across an unusual Blu-Ray -Night of the Animated Dead, an animated version of the classic Night of the Living Dead. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a stinker. The animation is just not very good. It's also basically a shot for shot recreation of the film. So this is our first trick, not treat, sensor sweep! All right, friends, that's all this time around. We wish you all a safe and fun Halloween! Let us know what movies you're watching.Twitter: https://twitter.com/Planet8CastFacebook: www.Facebook.com/Planet8PodcastHappy Halloween!

Horror movie "The Night House" proves to be a powerful one not because of its story, which starts off well and then never quite succeeds, but rather because of the performance of the actress at its center, Rebecca Hall.  This week, we celebrate what Hall brings to an otherwise mediocre haunted house film, one that requires her to spend a whole lot of time on screen alone, and is perhaps best in those moments.
