Live torture! Live executions! Televised experimentation! It's reality TV gone mad in Vengeance on Varos! Is this one too gruesome, or is its violence and gore used to make a point in a time of Doctor Who that's been accused of going over-the-top on the violence?   Join us as we repeatedly freak out Diana with impressions of Sil, the Catholic-style worship of video, how a society like that of Varos actually comes to exist and how it correlates to real world fascist regimes, what the punishment dome's layout actually is, the proper way to democratically agree on ending the life of the state's leader, and we wonder where the vengeance actually happens in this story. And, OF COURSE, Julie wants to talk about chairs!   If you would like to watch along with us, you can find this entire season available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). James Cameron-Wilson thought the belated #1 Practical Magic 2 with Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock akin to a mediocre syrupy episode of the old TV show Bewitched. But he was bewitched by #3 Pressure, based on David Haig's true-life play. Andrew Scott is the Scottish weatherman advising Brendan Fraser's Eisenhower on the feasibility of landing Allied forces in France. Playing out like a courtroom thriller, James feels this brilliant film is one of the greatest portrayals of a World War 2 figure. He is full of admiration for the supernatural thriller Obsession, out on Blu-Ray. It is beautifully made and acted, with every frame used for maximum effect. The film is deeply unsettling but it works wonderfully. He is also a fan of Apple TV's buddy comedy Mayday. Set in 1987, Ryan Reynolds is an American pilot who crashes in Russia near the home of hermit Kenneth Branagh, who is the funniest he has been in ages. Learn more about your ad choices. Harry Dodge and Silas Howard talk with Mike about By Hook or By Crook, their 2001 queer-cinema landmark, now touring U.S. theaters and streaming on VOD in a new 4K restoration. The pair met working at a dyke-run cafe in late-1980s San Francisco, and trace the film's origin story to an absurdly literal turning point: Dodge getting a cigarette-littering ticket that forced a thirteen-hour drive to Portland and back, during which the idea for a buddy story about Shy (Howard) and Valentine (Dodge) started to take shape. They talk about writing the script out of their own friendship rather than research, shooting for thirty days on dot-com money borrowed from newly flush friends, and staffing the crew almost entirely with fellow San Francisco artists and musicians. They also get into the year-long restoration process — producer Steak House rebuilding the film from raw footage into an entirely new timeline — and why a movie about two "outsiders of the outsiders" still doesn't feel dated twenty-five years later.By Hook or By Crook is currently playing in select theaters and available on-demand from Altered Innocence, with a Blu-ray and DVD — featuring a new commentary track with Dodge, Howard, and Steak House — arriving October 13th.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth--5513239/support.Become a supporter of The Projection Booth at http://www.patreon.com/projectionbooth

We chat with Alex Winter and William Sadler about Arrow Video's new 4K UHD Blu-ray release of Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, why the film has endured, the value of physical media, Sadler's beloved turn as Death, and whether a fourth Bill & Ted movie could ever happen.

We're kicking off Season 22 with the fanwank fest that is Attack of the Cybermen, which, let's be honest, is just a series of checkboxes on a rabid fanboy's list. Oh, and that fanboy is Ian Levine. Maybe also with Eric Saward, and possibly also Saward's ex-girlfriend? Sheesh, the authorship of this one is VERY confusing. ANYWAY…!   Join us as we discuss how this story does nothing but make us think of far better stories, cyber body positivity, the problems with our new Peri-l monkey (Anthony is SO sorry for that one), posh failed Cyber converts, how the Cryons are apparently trying to seduce absolute EVERYONE, and the dumb humor that Griffiths brings to the episode . Meanwhile, in the mail, one of our listeners threatens to send Anthony “back to Twink College” – OH MY!   If you would like to watch along with us, you can find this entire season available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). Recorded over six months ago, we finally bring you our Season 21 Retrospective! It's been a long road – we started Season 21 way back in January 2026, and finally put this out at the end of August 2026. Life events led to a four-month hiatus, and so here we are, finishing up this particular journey. And so we bring you the usual blend of awards, metrics, and questions from our friends on social media that has come to epitomise the end of a season for us! Join us as we recap the season, discussing such highs as the Tiny Master, Sixie's magnificent table jump, Turlough finally coming good, as well as such lows as the beigest Doctor of them all, excessively creepy villains, and very questionable martial arts moves (yes, we keep coming back to Warriors on the Cheap for this season's bad moments!). Meanwhile, Reilly and Anthony sing some Prokofiev, and the crew discusses whether the Fifth Doctor's death scene was truly upstaged by Nicola Bryant's cleavage…   If you would like to watch along with us, you can find this entire season available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). It's the start of a new era, as we talk about the Sixth Doctor's rocky debut in The Twin Dilemma. With creepy twins, giant gastropods, and a throttled companion, fandom has consistently rated this story as one of the worst in the history of Doctor Who… but will the Watchers agree with that assessment? Join us as we discuss the creepy clown vibe of the Sixth Doctor, how terrible he is to Peri, his questionable sartorial tastes (and how he really isn't in a position to criticize Peri), and the questionable decision to introduce him at the end of a season. We also discuss the arrogance creeping into the production of the show, the new Doctor's apparent ACAB tendencies, how we meet the “chillest” Time Lord to date (and how he could have been utilised better), and the best way of dealing with a glut of gastropods. Meanwhile, Reilly discloses his intense dislike for men with curly hair (he's says he's working on it).   If you would like to watch along with us, you can find this entire season available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB).
