I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” Exodus 17:3,5-6 Water from a Rock If you grew up in a home like mine and you complained about your food, you heard your parents say something like this: “There are starving children in Africa who would love to have that food.” Whether the reasoning was sound, the point was that we should be thankful for what we had instead of complaining. The temptation to be dissatisfied with what we have has plagued humanity for almost as long as this world has existed. But what if it is a basic need that seems to be missing? The nation of Israel was in the wilderness. No running water. No cool springs, pools, or streams to draw water from. We can live without food, but water is essential. Didn't God care enough to provide? But God wasn’t ignoring their need. With a miracle, he would show that he was the one who provided for them. He told Moses to strike a rock with his staff, and water flowed out of that rock for them to drink. How patient God was with them. How patient God is with us. We grumble and complain; yet he patiently continues to provide just what we need every day. The greatest gift he provides is another Rock. The Bible later comments on this time period and says, “They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:3-4). Jesus was always with them, and he is always with us, too. In his word of grace, he gives us the essential water for our spiritual lives. Through that living water that flows from Jesus, we are rescued from the wilderness we deserve because of our sins. And we are kept alive to dwell with our God, whose patient love for us always provides everything we need and more! Thanks be to God! Prayer: Jesus, forgive my grumbling and lack of trust. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.” John 4:7,9,13-15 The Picture We Can't Live Without In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Have you ever heard someone say, “A picture is worth a thousand words”? It means that sometimes showing a picture is better than trying to explain it with words. For example, I could describe a famous painting for a long time but seeing it in person makes it so much easier to understand. When Jesus taught people, he loved to use pictures like that to help them understand really important truths. One of his favorite pictures was water. Why water? Because we literally can't live without it! A human body can only survive about three days without water. Water is essential for life. One day, Jesus met a woman at a well. She had come to draw water to drink. Jesus used that every day, important water to teach her about something even more important: spiritual life. He said: “Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14). Jesus wasn't talking about water you guzzle from a bottle that quenches your thirst for a little while. He was talking about the gift of salvation—forgiveness of sins and eternal life—something that lasts forever. We all look for things in this life to make us happy. The woman at the well thought the right person in her life would make her happy. We might think games, friends, screens, or even AI will satisfy us. The problem is those things never fully satisfy us. They leave us wanting more. They leave us feeling empty. Jesus gives us what we can't find anywhere else: Forgiveness when we foolishly look elsewhere for fulfillment. Peace with God for the moments we need it most. Eternal life to someday replace this life. And the best part? He fully satisfies us with salvation! We don't need to keep going back and trying over and over—Jesus already gives us everything we need. Jesus even gave us a picture of this truth: his cross. Full Text of Readings Friday of the Third Week of Lent Lectionary: 241 The Saint of the day is Saint Leander of Seville Saint Leander of Seville's Story The next time you recite the Nicene Creed at Mass, think of today's saint. For it was Leander of Seville who, as bishop, introduced the practice in the sixth century. He saw it as a way to help reinforce the faith of his people and as an antidote against the heresy of Arianism, which denied the divinity of Christ. By the end of his life, Leander had helped Christianity flourish in Spain at a time of political and religious upheaval. Saint Leander of Seville's own family were staunch Christians: his brothers Isidore and Fulgentius were named bishops, and their sister Florentina became an abbess. Leander entered a monastery as a young man and spent three years in prayer and study. At the end of that tranquil period he was made a bishop. For the rest of his life he worked strenuously to fight against heresy. The death of the anti-Christian king in 586 helped Leander's cause. He and the new king worked hand in hand to restore orthodoxy and a renewed sense of morality. Leander succeeded in persuading many Arian bishops to change their loyalties. Saint Leander of Seville died around 600. In Spain, he is honored as a Doctor of the Church. Reflection As we pray the Nicene Creed every Sunday, we might reflect on the fact that that same prayer is not only being prayed by every Catholic throughout the world, but by many other Christians as well. Psalm 95:6-7 Under His Care Imagine a shepherd who takes care of sheep. However, he is only concerned about making sure that they have food to eat. As long as the grass is growing in the field, nothing else matters. Or he only thinks about providing shelter. As long as the barn or the sheep pen is in good repair, he thinks he’s done his job. Such a shepherd won’t be a shepherd for long. The sheep may be well fed but have no protection from wolves that want to attack. They may have shelter but lack the basic food and water they need to survive. No, that would be unthinkable. A shepherd needs to attend to all the needs of his sheep. Today’s Bible verse invites us to worship the Lord because he is our Maker. Reflecting on all that we are and all that we have from the Lord who made heaven and earth leads us to joyful worship. But then he adds another even greater reason to worship. “He is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care.” The God who made us is the Shepherd who cares for us. Who better to care for us than he? He knows our needs, inside and out. He knows the diseases that threaten our bodies and our souls. He sees the wolves that want to attack and destroy us. He knows the nourishment our hearts need not only to survive but to thrive. With his innocent life and death, Jesus crushed Satan’s power to accuse and destroy us, no matter what we've done. With the nourishing food of his Word, he feeds our faith to receive forgiveness and the life he won at the cross. No, not a single need escapes his notice. Not a single need is beyond his care. He consistently, lovingly, and perfectly provides for all our needs. And he blesses us every day with one goal in mind—to bring us safely into his eternal pastures, where we will praise him forever. Full Text of Readings Thursday of the Third Week of Lent Lectionary: 240 The Saint of the day is Blessed Angela Salawa Blessed Angela Salawa's Story Angela served Christ and Christ's little ones with all her strength. Born in Siepraw, near Kraków, Poland, Blessed Angela Salawa was the 11th child of Bartlomiej and Ewa Salawa. In 1897, she moved to Kraków where her older sister Therese lived. Angela immediately began to gather together and instruct young women domestic workers. During World War I, she helped prisoners of war without regard for their nationality or religion. The writings of Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross were a great comfort to her. Angela gave great service in caring for soldiers wounded in World War I. After 1918, her health did not permit her to exercise her customary apostolate. Addressing herself to Christ, she wrote in her diary, “I want you to be adored as much as you were destroyed.” In another place, she wrote, “Lord, I live by your will. I shall die when you desire; save me because you can.” At her 1991 beatification in Kraków, Pope John Paul II said: “It is in this city that she worked, that she suffered and that her holiness came to maturity. While connected to the spirituality of Saint Francis, she showed an extraordinary responsiveness to the action of the Holy Spirit” (L'Osservatore Romano, volume 34, number 4, 1991). Full Text of Readings Wednesday of the Third Week of Lent Lectionary: 239 The Saint of the day is Saint John Ogilvie Saint John Ogilvie's Story Saint John Ogilvie's noble Scottish family was partly Catholic and partly Presbyterian. His father raised him as a Calvinist, sending him to the continent to be educated. There, John became interested in the popular debates going on between Catholic and Calvinist scholars. Confused by the arguments of Catholic scholars whom he sought out, he turned to Scripture. Two texts particularly struck him: “God wills all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth,” and “Come to me all you who are weary and find life burdensome, and I will refresh you.” Slowly, Saint John Ogilvie came to see that the Catholic Church could embrace all kinds of people. Among these, he noted, were many martyrs. He decided to become Catholic and was received into the Church at Louvain, Belgium, in 1596 at the age of 17. Saint John Ogilvie continued his studies, first with the Benedictines, then as a student at the Jesuit College at Olmutz. He joined the Jesuits and for the next 10 years underwent their rigorous intellectual and spiritual training. At his ordination to the priesthood in France in 1610, Saint John Ogilvie met two Jesuits who had just returned from Scotland after suffering arrest and imprisonment. They saw little hope for any successful work there in view of the tightening of the penal laws. But a fire had been lit within John. For the next two and a half years he pleaded to be placed there as a missionary. Sent by his superiors, he secretly entered Scotland posing as a horse trader or a soldier returning from the wars in Europe. Unable to do significant work among the relatively few Catholics in Scotland, John made his way back to Paris to consult his superiors. Rebuked for having left his assignment in Scotland, he was sent back. He warmed to the task before him and had some success in making converts and in secretly serving Scottish Catholics. But he was soon betrayed, arrested, and brought before the court. His trial dragged on until he had been without food for 26 hours. He was imprisoned and deprived of sleep. For eight days and nights he was dragged around, prodded with sharp sticks, his hair pulled out. Still, he refused to reveal the names of Catholics or to acknowledge the jurisdiction of the king in spiritual affairs. He underwent a second and third trial but held firm. At his final trial, he assured his judges: “In all that concerns the king, I will be slavishly obedient; if any attack his temporal power, I will shed my last drop of blood for him. But in the things of spiritual jurisdiction which a king unjustly seizes I cannot and must not obey.” Condemned to death as a traitor, he was faithful to the end, even when on the scaffold he was offered his freedom and a fine living if he would deny his faith. His courage in prison and in his martyrdom was reported throughout Scotland. Saint John Ogilvie was canonized in 1976, becoming the first Scottish saint since 1250. His liturgical feast is celebrated on March 10. Reflection John came of age when neither Catholics nor Protestants were willing to tolerate one another. Turning to Scripture, he found words that enlarged his vision. Although he became a Catholic and died for his faith, he understood the meaning of “small-c catholic,” the wide range of believers who embrace Christianity. Read OnlinePeter approached Jesus and asked him, “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times.” Matthew 18:21–22After replying to Peter, Jesus tells a parable about a servant who owed his master a “huge amount.” The literal translation from the Greek is “ten thousand talents.” One talent alone was a substantial sum, equivalent to about twenty years of wages for a day laborer. Therefore, ten thousand talents would represent an astonishing debt—roughly 200,000 years of wages, or about 24 billion U.S. dollars for a worker making $50 an hour.It's difficult to even fathom that much. Jesus uses this immense amount to emphasize His point. When the king in the parable decided to settle accounts with his servants and the one who owed him this enormous debt was brought before him, the king initially decided to have the man and his family sold into slavery. However, the servant pleaded with the king, asking for more time and promising to repay the debt in full. As a result, the king forgave the entire debt. This was undoubtedly a life-changing day for the servant.Things changed quickly, however. When that servant encountered one of his fellow servants who owed him a much smaller amount—100 denarii in Greek—he immediately demanded repayment. When his fellow servant pleaded for mercy, the man refused and had him thrown into prison. Using the same calculation, 100 denarii would be 100 days' wages or 40,000 U.S. dollars.The contrast is stark! The king represents God, and each of us represents the servant forgiven for the enormous debt. When we beg for mercy, God grants it in superabundance. He knows that we are unable to repay the debt of our sins, so He wipes it away with one condition: that we, in turn, forgive everyone who sins against us.Jesus tells this parable in response to Peter's question about how often he must forgive his brother who sins against him. Peter suggests, “Seven times?” but Jesus responds with the symbolic number, “Seventy-seven times,” meaning that our forgiveness should have no limits—an infinite number of times. How well do we live out this call?Overcoming anger is challenging, as we often feel that justice should be served when we are wronged. But perhaps if someone came to us, confessed his or her sin, and begged for mercy, we might offer it. But Jesus teaches that forgiveness must go beyond mere words—it must come from the heart. It must be sincere, complete, and without reservation. Every fiber of our being must forgive. And if someone sins against us and refuses to acknowledge any wrongdoing, the same applies: We must forgive even that unrepentant person from the heart. This is no easy task.If forgiveness is difficult for you, as it is for most people, consider the consequences of withholding forgiveness. When the king in this parable learned that his servant refused to forgive his fellow servant's small debt, he “handed him over to the torturers until he should pay back the whole debt.” Jesus concludes the parable with a stark warning: “So will my heavenly Father do to you, unless each of you forgives your brother from your heart.” This should inspire a holy fear in us, often called servile fear—a fear of punishment that helps turn us away from sin. This is a good starting point, but the ideal is to cultivate filial fear, the fear of offending God that springs from love. When we truly love God and experience His infinite mercy, we strive to avoid sin not just out of fear of punishment but because we do not want to hurt or offend our loving Father.Reflect today on two key things. First, grasp the unfathomable mercy God has given you. Let it fill your heart with deep gratitude. Second, call to mind anyone against whom you harbor anger or resentment. Even the smallest trace of unforgiveness must be confronted. Make an act of your will to forgive, and continue doing so until that forgiveness flows sincerely from your heart.Most merciful God, Your mercy is unfathomable. I beg for Your forgiveness for my sins. There is no way I can ever repay You. I acknowledge that Your forgiveness is contingent upon me offering the same mercy to everyone who has sinned against me.
