In this episode of DSC's Campfires, host Larry Weishuhn shares the thrilling details of his recent European roe deer hunt. He recounts his journey through Sweden, Poland, and Scotland alongside friends Mark and Carol Little, as well as expert guides Stefan and Sofia Bengtsson from Scandinavian Pro Hunters. Larry's deep passion for the sport and the delicious rewards of the hunt shine through as he details the beautiful landscapes, his gear, and the magnificent animals he encountered along the way. Larry compares the European roe deer to the whitetailed deer of European countries. These deer have a notably small body size, typically weighing between 50 and 60 pounds. Beyond the challenge of the hunt, Larry notes that the meat from these deer is absolutely delicious. The three-nation hunt was initially created as a donation for the DSC Foundation Gala in 2025. The package was generously put together by Larry alongside Stefan and Sofia Bengtsson of Scandinavian Pro Hunters. Mark and Carol Little purchased the hunt at the gala to help fund various DSC Foundation projects. The actual hunt came to fruition shortly before recording, taking place in May 2026. Larry traveled from Austin to London to Copenhagen, eventually driving across the waterway to the southernmost tip of Sweden. The group hunted on a large estate managed by Scandinavian Pro Hunters. This property featured a beautifully rehabilitated waterway that now supports abundant wildlife and sea-run trout. Carol Little successfully harvested a great deer early in the trip. Larry hunted from a "hochsitz" (an open-top deer blind) using Stefan's single-shot K95 Blaser rifle chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. He harvested a mature, silver-medal buck with gorgeous ivory-colored antler tips. The group traveled by train from Malmo to Copenhagen, then flew directly into Warsaw, Poland. The Polish hunting grounds were highly agricultural, filled with apple orchards, blackberries, and strawberries. Larry hunted with Stefan and a local English-speaking guide named Derek. Using an R8 Blaser in .243, Larry shot a buck late in the evening. The local property manager used a thermal drone, which is completely legal in Poland, to recover the deer in the dark. This buck scored as a silver medal and featured a unique 3x4 point configuration. On a subsequent outing in Poland, Larry successfully used an 8x57 JS rifle to take another beautiful silver-medal buck. The final leg involved flying into Glasgow, Scotland, and driving to an area near Inverness. Larry hunted with a local Scottish guide named George. Larry used George's 6.5x55 Swede rifle to stalk and harvest another incredible roe deer buck. In total, Larry took four roe deer during the trip, including three 3x3s and two featuring a fourth point. Larry will be attending the Texas Wildlife Association Convention in San Antonio from July 23rd to July 26th. He will also be present at the upcoming DSC Summer Expo and DSC Gala. Another Scandinavian Pro Hunter trip will be auctioned off at the DSC Gala. Listeners can find full written stories and photos on Larry's website at larryweishuhn.net. Video coverage of the hunt will be available on Carbon TV and his YouTube channel, A Sportsman's Life. Frank Lesniak joins Andrew Pla for a wide-ranging conversation that covers Frank's newly minted Microsoft MVP status, his journey through PowerShell, and what it looks like to build a real presence in the tech community. Frank talks through the pipeline struggles that tripped him up early on, how his VB Script and object-oriented background made the shift to PowerShell's object model feel disorienting, and how AI has quietly changed the way he approaches scripting today. The conversation takes a thoughtful turn as Andrew and Frank dig into impostor syndrome, the value of conference speaking, and how showing up consistently in the community compounds into a career. Frank also shares an update on DuPage Animal Friends, the nonprofit he serves, which supports one of the country's highest-performing open-admission animal shelters. Key Takeaways: The PowerShell pipeline is one of the most commonly cited stumbling blocks for newcomers, especially those coming from text-based scripting backgrounds. Learning to visualize what your objects look like at each stage of the pipeline, using tools like Get-Member, is a skill that pays dividends long term. Showing up at conferences and user groups, even when you feel underprepared, is how you build the reps that eventually make it feel natural. Frank's consulting background gave him a head start on presentation skills, and he's clear that no one is born polished. Community involvement and career growth are more connected than they might look from the outside. Engaging with people on GitHub, at events, and through open source creates a feedback loop that builds confidence and opens doors. Guest Bio: Frank Lesniak returns to The PowerShell Podcast, this time as a Microsoft MVP (Microsoft Azure, PowerShell). Frank is a Sr. Cybersecurity & Enterprise Technology Architect at West Monroe, where PowerShell runs through client work on corporate M&A: carve-outs, tenant-to-tenant migrations, identity consolidation, endpoint moves, and security posture improvement across Microsoft 365, Azure, Entra ID, Active Directory, Intune, Defender, and Windows. Beyond consulting, Frank speaks at technical conferences, mentors first-time speakers, and publishes open-source PowerShell standards and tooling, including PSStyleGuide, GloryRole, and PSConnMon. His public work threads least-privilege identity, cloud role mining, cross-platform observability, and high-quality AI-assisted development through standards, automated tests, and automated code quality reviews. In this deeply emotional episode of Metabolic Matters, host Christina Mason sits down with Houneida Rechrech, a doctor of veterinary medicine, a mother, a biochemistry lover, and a stage 4 breast cancer thriver. They are joined by Dr. Yvonne Teverbaugh, a doctor of natural medicine and an expert in integrative metabolic oncology. Together, they share an extremely personal story which illuminates the waves of emotion one experiences on a cancer journey: fear, surrender, empowerment, and healing that extends far beyond the physical body. After initially receiving a stage 0 breast cancer diagnosis in 2022, Houneida's condition rapidly progressed to stage 4. Feeling disconnected from a conventional system that focused only on the disease, she began searching for a more personalized and integrative approach to healing—one that addressed metabolic, emotional and physical health. What makes this conversation especially powerful is the relationship between Houneida and Dr. Yvonne. Their dialogue goes beyond a typical practitioner-patient conversation. Via her questions and comments, Dr. Yvonne demonstrates that healing a patient is far more than just looking at lab work and images. They dive deep into biology, psychology, spirituality and more.Houneida vulnerably shares her experiences: immigrating to Michigan from the Mediterranean, navigating motherhood, anxiety, sleep disruption, and the emotional burdens she believes led to a cancer diagnosis. Dr. Yvonne listens with compassion and offers insight into how metabolic and integrative approaches can help patients feel more connected, informed, and empowered throughout treatment. Jess Pomfret returns for her third appearance on the PowerShell Podcast and brings the same energy that keeps people coming back. She and Andrew cover a lot of ground, starting with her upcoming "Chase the Sun" charity cycling event where she'll attempt to ride 205 miles coast-to-coast across the UK in a single day, starting at sunrise on the longest day of the year and racing the sun to the finish line. It's a big undertaking, and she's riding to raise money for Momentum in Fitness, a charity her wife works for that brings fitness opportunities to older adults, kids in non-traditional school settings, and children with cancer. On the technical side, Jess makes the case for PowerShell splatting as an underrated beginner concept that makes code dramatically more readable. She walks through the idea of pulling parameters out of a long command line, organizing them into a hash table, and passing that hash table to the command instead. It's one of those things experienced scripters take for granted, but seeing it for the first time is genuinely useful. The conversation also gets into Desired State Configuration (DSC), where Andrew and Jess dig into what it is, how it works, and why it matters for sysadmins who want to maintain consistent configuration across their environments. Jess also opens up about managing a packed schedule between her day job, speaking, podcasting, LinkedIn Learning courses, and serious bike training. Her answer is honest and relatable: she's still figuring it out, but Todoist and a very supportive partner help a lot. Key Takeaways: Splatting is one of the most readable improvements you can make to your PowerShell code. Instead of chaining parameters into one long command, you load them into a hash table and pass that to your command with an @ symbol. Cleaner to write, easier to read, and especially useful when you're sharing code on a screen. DSC lets you define what a system should look like and PowerShell handles the work of getting it (and keeping it) there. It's a mindset shift from scripting manual steps to declaring an end state, and it's particularly powerful in large environments where consistency matters. Having a support system is one of the most underrated factors in being able to sustain a high-output career alongside community contributions. Whether it's people around you who help carry the load or finding your people in the data and PowerShell communities, you can't do it alone indefinitely. Mack, MD, MS, FCCM, speaks with pediatric SSC guideline cochairs Scott L. Weiss, MD, MSCE, FCCM, and Pierre Tissieres, MD, DSc, about the latest guideline recommendations for the care of children with sepsis and septic shock. The updated guidelines emphasize the early identification of sepsis, an evolution to a more targeted way of treatment, and a more practical approach to guideline implementation. Other aspects of the previous guidelines, such as lactate measurements, continuous reassessment, and the role of point-of-care monitoring, were reinforced in the 2026 guidelines. The guidelines, “Surviving Sepsis Campaign International Guidelines for the Management of Sepsis and Septic Shock in Children 2026,” were released in the April issue of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. Key updates and new areas of emphasis include: A more nuanced approach to sepsis screening and early recognition New guidance on supplemental oxygen, including limiting hyperoxia and using more conservative oxygenation targets in children with septic shock New patient, intervention, comparison, outcome questions related to immune dysregulation, highlighting an important area for future research New attention to post-sepsis morbidity Greater emphasis on long-term follow-up and risk assessment for children who survive sepsis Scott L. Weiss, MD, MSCE, FCCM, is division chief of critical care and vice-chair of research at Nemours Children's Hospital (DuPont)-Delaware and professor of pediatrics and pathology and genomic medicine at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. This episode of DSC's Campfires with Larry Weishuhn welcomes renowned outdoorsman, guide, and seminar speaker Randy Flannery back to Texas for a wide-ranging conversation on hunting, woodsmanship, and life on the road. Flannery shares insights from an intense seminar season, where he travels across the country speaking at major sportsmen's shows, connecting with hunters, and sharing decades of experience in the field. The discussion highlights some of the nation's premier outdoor shows, including the NRA Great American Outdoor Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania—described as the “Super Bowl” of hunting expos—as well as other top-tier events across the country. Flannery emphasizes the importance of these gatherings not just for education, but for the relationships, stories, and sense of community they foster among hunters and outdoor enthusiasts. A major focus of the episode centers on the impact of extreme weather conditions on wildlife and hunting success. Flannery details the severe drought in Maine—the worst he's seen—which dramatically affected water levels, habitat conditions, and animal behavior. He explains how these environmental shifts made traditional hunting methods less effective, reinforcing the importance of adaptability and true woodsmanship in the field. Flannery stresses that modern technology can never replace foundational hunting skills. He underscores that success in challenging conditions comes down to reading terrain, understanding animal behavior, and mastering tracking and stalking techniques. Through his tracking and stalking schools, he teaches hunters how to develop these critical skills—training that has grown in demand as hunters seek to move beyond reliance on tools like trail cameras. The conversation also explores the broader philosophy of hunting, where Flannery emphasizes that the most important tool a hunter possesses is their mind. He discusses the need for preparation, adaptability, and respect for the land—whether navigating the dense forests of Maine or the vast ranches of Texas. In addition, Flannery shares updates on his upcoming book, which will focus heavily on woodsmanship, tracking, and stalking whitetails. Drawing from a lifetime of experience and mentorship, the book aims to preserve traditional hunting knowledge that he believes is being lost in today's technology-driven world. The episode concludes with a look ahead at upcoming hunting seasons, preparations at his Maine outfitting operation, and encouragement for listeners to stay engaged in conservation and advocacy efforts—particularly through support of organizations like the NRA and DSC. This episode of DSC's Campfires with Larry Weishuhn features an engaging conversation with shotgun expert and instructor Cyle Foley, who shares his journey into the world of sporting clays and competitive shooting. Foley explains how a casual invitation to a charity shoot in 2015 sparked a deep passion that led him to become a certified instructor at the Dallas Gun Club and serve on the Texas State Board for the sport. The discussion centers on practical advice for newcomers to shotgun sports, emphasizing that the right firearm depends on the shooter's level of commitment. Foley highlights the importance of gun fit, noting that a properly fitted shotgun improves accuracy, reduces felt recoil, and allows for more natural movement and target acquisition. He often recommends semi-automatic shotguns—especially for beginners and youth shooters—because of their reduced recoil, simplicity, and versatility. Foley also draws a clear distinction between instruction and coaching: instruction focuses on mechanics and technique, while coaching dives deeper into mindset, strategy, and self-correction. He stresses that mastering fundamentals like mechanics and vision can dramatically improve performance, and that even a short session with a qualified instructor can accelerate progress significantly. The conversation touches on the dynamics of teaching, particularly within families, where Foley notes that children often respond better to outside instructors than to parents. He also reflects on how mental focus, life stress, and age affect learning and performance, with younger shooters often progressing more quickly due to fewer distractions. Beyond technique, Foley highlights the camaraderie and travel opportunities within the sporting clays community, describing unique shooting environments across the country and the strong relationships built through the sport. He also discusses equipment choices for youth shooters, recommending 12-gauge shotguns in many cases due to cost efficiency and adaptability, while cautioning against assumptions about recoil and smaller gauges like .410. The episode concludes with a look at Wing & Clay Life magazine, a publication Foley is involved with, which aims to bring storytelling, authenticity, and high-quality writing back into the shotgun and hunting media space—capturing not just the hunt, but the full experience surrounding it. DSC's Campfires with Larry Weishuhn: Episode Show Notes Location: Choctaw Hunting Lodge Host: Larry Weishuhn Dusty Vickrey: Manager of the Choctaw Hunting Lodge. Jesse Barrett: Representative from Aviant. Jim Bequette: Longtime friend of Larry Weishuhn. Jim Block: A regular guest and hunting partner. In this episode, Larry Weishuhn gathers around the table at the Choctaw Hunting Lodge with a few of his closest friends. The conversation is filled with camaraderie, good-natured ribbing, and deep appreciation for the bonds formed through hunting. The group discusses the impressive advancements in crossbow technology, shares stories of recent successful hunts, and highlights the sentimental value behind gifting and collecting special firearms. The Evolution of Crossbow Technology Brian Flaherty from TenPoint visited the lodge to test out their new 2026 crossbow models. Aviant produces the Gordon Glass limbs that are heavily utilized in the industry. Modern crossbows are incredibly powerful, with one tested model pushing a 540-grain arrow at speeds exceeding 510 feet per second. TenPoint broadheads featuring over a 3 1/4 inch cutting surface were used with devastating effectiveness. Larry successfully used a crossbow with a lit reticle to harvest a hog and to humanely dispatch an injured, three-legged fallow deer doe. Memorable Hunts and Milestones Jim Block has the unique distinction of shooting two bison at the Choctaw Hunting Lodge using a Sharps rifle with a black powder cartridge. Jim Bequette successfully conspired with Jim Block's wife to surprise him with a birthday hog hunt. The group emphasizes that while taking an animal is the goal, the true value of hunting lies in spending time with old and new friends. Firearm Addictions and Unforgettable Gifts Dusty Vickrey openly admits to having a collecting addiction for old bolt-action Remington 700 BDL rifles with wood stocks. Jim Bequette coordinated secretly with Dusty's wife to gift him a very unique heavy-barrel .223 rifle for Christmas. In another grand gesture, Jim Bequette transported a 12-foot Remington sign from 1987 all the way from Illinois to hang in the lodge for Dusty. Larry gifted Jim Bequette an incredibly accurate Marlin 45-70 rifle that originally came from their mutual friend, Tony Ashleman. The men agree that firearms are ultimately about the memories, the specific hunts, and the people you were with. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Location: Choctaw Hunting Lodge In this episode of DSC's Campfires, Larry Weishuhn sits down at the beautiful Choctaw Hunting Lodge with Mark Sidelinger and Brian Flaherty of TenPoint Crossbows. What begins as a conversation about gear quickly turns into a deeper discussion about the evolution of hunting, the role of technology, and how crossbows are reshaping access and opportunity in the outdoors. From lifelong friendships and family-owned business values to the future of hunting participation, this episode blends storytelling, innovation, and a shared passion for conservation and ethical harvest. The Rise of Crossbows in Modern Hunting Larry explores how crossbows have grown from niche equipment into a powerful and accessible tool for hunters of all backgrounds. With rifle-like familiarity and increasing precision, crossbows are opening new doors for both seasoned and first-time hunters. Recruitment, Retention & Recreation – The “Three R's” The conversation highlights how crossbows help: Recruit new hunters into the sport Retain aging or physically limited hunters Provide new ways to recreate and extend hunting seasons This philosophy emphasizes growing the overall hunting community—not just competing for market share. Accuracy, Ethics & Real-World Application While modern crossbows deliver impressive accuracy—even at longer distances—the discussion reinforces ethical hunting practices, with most shots remaining within 40 yards. The balance between technology and responsibility remains central. A New Challenge for Experienced Hunters Larry shares his personal shift from skepticism to appreciation after hands-on experience. For hunters who have “done it all” with rifles and handguns, crossbows offer a fresh challenge while maintaining familiarity and precision. Hunting as a Lifestyle – From Field to TableThe group reflects on the deeper rewards of hunting, including harvesting wild game, providing food, and connecting with nature. Stories from the field—including Brian's successful axis deer hunt—bring this to life. Conservation & Community Through DSCThe episode also highlights the mission of DSC and the DSC Foundation, including upcoming conservation-driven hunts and the role of partnerships—like TenPoint's support—in expanding opportunities for hunters and conservation efforts alike. Brian Flaherty shares his successful axis deer hunt at Choctaw Hunting Lodge—his first velvet buck—offering insight into preparation, opportunity, and the excitement that keeps hunters coming back to the field. “Crossbows aren't replacing other tools—they're adding to the toolbox.” This idea becomes a central theme: rifles, vertical bows, and crossbows all work together to grow the sport and keep hunters engaged across seasons and life stages. This episode is a reflection on adaptation—how hunters evolve, how technology advances, and how traditions endure. Whether you're a lifelong rifle hunter or new to archery, the message is clear: the outdoors always has another level to offer. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Hunting England's “Vampire Deer” & Classic Red Stag Adventures with John Landgraf In this fascinating episode of DSC's Campfires, Larry Weishuhn sits down with longtime friend and hunting companion John Landgraf to recount their recent international adventure in the English countryside—pursuing the unique and elusive “vampire deer,” including Chinese water deer and muntjac. The conversation dives deep into what makes these species so extraordinary. Unlike traditional deer, Chinese water deer lack antlers but feature prominent, tusk-like canine fangs used for fighting—earning them their “vampire” nickname. Larry and John describe the challenges of spotting and stalking these small, quick animals in marshy, reed-filled terrain, where their natural camouflage and erratic movement make for an exciting and technical hunt. They also highlight the expertise of local gamekeepers, whose ability to judge maturity based on fang length, coloration, and physical traits proved critical in selecting the right animal. From gear choices—like the effective use of a .223 rifle—to fieldcraft and shooting techniques, the episode offers practical insights alongside storytelling. Beyond the hunt itself, the episode paints a vivid picture of rural England—hedgerows instead of fences, centuries-old inns, abundant pheasant populations, and a strong conservation culture supported by land management programs. The adventure continues with John's successful pursuit of a classic English red stag, taken on a historic estate rich with wildlife and tradition. Larry shares his own success with a muntjac, rounding out a bucket-list experience decades in the making. Blending global hunting experiences, wildlife biology, and camaraderie, this episode captures the spirit of adventure and appreciation for unique game species across the world. Podcast Summary In this episode of DSC's Campfires, host Larry Weishuhn sits down with his long-time friend and fellow outdoorsman, Johnnie Hudman. The two swap stories about Johnnie's recent outdoor adventures in South America, focusing heavily on an action-packed fishing trip for massive Golden Dorado on the border of Uruguay and Argentina. They also discuss high-volume dove hunting in Argentina and look ahead to Johnnie's upcoming safari in South Africa. The episode features host Larry Weishuhn interviewing his long-time friend Johnnie Hudman. Johnnie recently traveled to the border of Uruguay and Argentina to fish for Golden Dorado. The group fished below a large electric dam in very swift water. Golden Dorado are described as beautiful, bright gold fish that resemble a 50-pound golden shiner minnow. The fishing was so physically demanding that the anglers only fished for about two and a half hours at a time. They used baitcasting reels and medium-weight rods with heavy eight-ounce sinkers, large hooks, and double steel leaders. The group caught many fish in the 30 to 40-pound range, which far exceeded Johnnie's initial goal of catching a 20-pounder. Golden Dorado are not considered good to eat, but the group did catch and eat large piranhas weighing up to four pounds. The trip also included high-volume dove hunting in Argentina, where they stayed at a historic 1912 horse ranch. One of the hunters in the group shot 1,000 doves in a single day. Johnnie is currently preparing for an upcoming trip to South Africa to hunt dangerous game. During his African safari, he plans to use mouth calls to try and call in predators like jackals, caracals, and potentially leopards. Listeners interested in booking a similar South American trip are directed to look into River Plate Outfitters. Over the years River Plate Outfitters has grown into one of the largest outfitting companies in South America, offering the most prestigious wingshooting and fishing programs in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. For over two decades RPO has been leader in Uruguay and Argentina Mixed Bag Shoots. RPO offers top quality in all of its destinations, and shows continuous effort for innovating in its service, fishing programs and staff training. Its service is up to the standards that American anglers and shooters have come to expect. RPO has the experience, local connections and backcountry savvy to provide an unparalleled fishing and/or hunting adventure. In this episode host Erin Gallardo, PT, DPT, NCS interviews Multiple Sclerosis specialist and researcher Dr. Herb Karpatkin, PT, DSc, NCS, MSCS to discuss how therapy for people with multiple sclerosis must be fundamentally different from approaches used for stroke, spinal cord injury, or TBI. In his research Herb discovered an incidental finding that led to more questions that he and his team wanted to investigate: does treadmill walking carry over to overground walking in persons with MS? In the show he explains the nuances of treadmill walking for persons with MS vs healthy controls and when to use it or not. Herb shares his framework on intermittent, high-intensity interval walking and strength training, which allow people with MS to push hard, rest, and achieve meaningful aerobic gains and functional improvements without excessive fatigue. Instead of telling people with MS they can't work hard or lift heavy, his research finds that to be absolutely untrue. Herb and Erin also discuss a couple of past patients who wanted to complete the MS Society 5k walk and what the training looked like and what could have been done differently. The topic of cooling came up and how to effectively implement this technique to allow persons with MS to do more without overheating. In this episode, Etienne Nichols sits down with Thor Rollins, a leader at Nelson Labs and the convener of the committee revising ISO 10993-1. The conversation centers on the newest 2025 version of the standard, which represents a massive philosophical shift from a "checkbox" testing mentality to a rigorous, risk-based approach aligned with ISO 14971.Rollins explains that modern medical devices are far more complex than the metal and hard plastics of the past. With the rise of degradable materials, coatings, and nanomaterials, traditional animal testing often fails to provide the best science. The new standard introduces critical concepts such as biological risk estimation, foreseeable misuse, and a comprehensive lifecycle evaluation that looks beyond "time zero" safety. The duo also discusses the practical implications for manufacturers, including the controversial requirement to evaluate biocompatibility at the end of a product's lifecycle—a particular challenge for reprocessed devices. Rollins provides insider knowledge on the US's stance on the revision, the timeline for FDA recognition, and how companies can leverage biological equivalence to potentially reduce their testing burden.Key Timestamps01:45 – The shift from "checkboxing" to a risk-based approach.03:10 – The rapid timeline of the 2025 revision and the influence of ISO 14971.04:22 – Lifecycle Evaluation: Assessing safety beyond the "brand new" state.06:50 – Chronic toxicity vs. acute reactions: Why front-end evaluation matters.08:15 – Foreseeable Misuse: When doctors use scopes outside their intended anatomy.12:10 – The concept of Bioequivalence: Using existing data to justify reduced testing.13:45 – Breakthrough: The removal of material-mediated pyrogenicity testing for known materials.15:30 – Why the US voted "No" on the current draft: A call for better guidance.18:50 – Notified Bodies and MDR: The 2025 version as "State of the Art."21:15 – Practical chemistry tests for aging polymers (DSC, GPC, FTIR).25:40 – Advice for small vs. large companies on building material databases.Quotes"The testing that we developed back in the 50s and 60s actually doesn't really work the best with some of these complex devices... we've been moving the standard away from what we call checkboxing." - Thor Rollins"I only say that expensive tests always impact innovation. We don't want to over-test, but we want to do the right tests." - Thor RollinsTakeawaysLifecycle is the New Frontier: You must now evaluate biocompatibility throughout the product's life, especially for reprocessed devices that

How do you separate legit African safari outfitters from salesmen at hunting conventions like SCI and Dallas Safari Club? In this episode, we break down the three most important questions every hunter must ask before booking an African hunting safari: 1️⃣ How big is the property you hunt? 2️⃣ How many hunters do you take at one time? 3️⃣ What's a realistic starter package for a first-time Africa hunter? These questions reveal hunting pressure, ethics, experience quality, and honesty — without relying on marketing brochures or trophy photos. We explain: Why property size matters more than trophy lists How hunter-to-PH ratios affect your actual hunting experience What a good first African safari package really looks like Common mistakes first-time Africa hunters make Red flags to watch for when speaking to safari exhibitors What ethical, sustainable African hunting looks like on the ground Whether you're planning your first plains game safari, comparing African outfitters, or attending SCI or DSC to book a hunt, this episode gives you practical, real-world advice from inside the African hunting industry.
In this episode, recorded in the rugged beauty of West Texas, Larry Weishuhn is joined by a true icon of the outdoor industry: Fred Eichler. Known for his boundless energy and his show Everything Eichler, Fred sits down at the campfire to discuss the evolution of hunting, from traditional archery to the rise of technology. The two legends swap compliments and stories, discussing the art of getting close to game—whether with a recurve bow or a handgun—and the vital importance of "woodsmanship" in the modern era. The conversation concludes with a strong message about unity among hunters, the importance of firearms safety education, and the necessity of the NRA. [00:00] Intro & Sponsors: Larry welcomes listeners back to camp in West Texas. [01:15] Legends Collide: Fred and Larry discuss their mutual respect. Fred shares how Larry's writing and TV presence influenced him growing up, viewing Larry as the "Whitetail Guru." [03:30] The Evolution of a Hunter: Fred talks about starting with shotguns and .22s under his father's guidance before gravitating toward bowhunting for the challenge. [05:45] Handguns vs. Bows: A comparison of short-range hunting methods. Fred expresses his admiration for Larry's proficiency with a handgun, noting that it requires the same stalking skills as archery. [08:00] Woodsmanship: Larry laments the shift from relying on instinct ("what's between the ears") to relying on technology ("fingertips"), and the importance of knowing how to navigate the wild without GPS. [12:20] The Africa Connection: How Larry inspired Fred's dreams of hunting Africa. They share a laugh about the "weird stuff" they've eaten in bush camps, from snakes to "little dickey birds." [14:45] The Second Amendment: A serious look at the role of the NRA. Fred emphasizes that the NRA is the most significant organization protecting gun rights and stresses the importance of safety education for children. [18:00] Unity in the Field: The need for all gun owners—whether they hunt with bows, rifles, or handguns—to belong to the NRA to protect the future of the lifestyle. "I hate to say 'growing up,' but watching you handle yourself on TV, your articles, your books... you backed it with knowledge." — Fred Eichler to Larry Weishuhn "Years ago, we took what you had between this ear and this ear, and that's what you used. Now... we've put it at fingertips. Somewhere down the way, those buttons are not going to work." — Larry Weishuhn on modern technology vs. woodsmanship "A firearm has never hurt anybody... until it gets into somebody's hands and they determine what they're going to do with it." — Fred Eichler "The finest people in the world are out there, those who love the outdoors." — Larry Weishuhn This episode is brought to you by: DSC (Dallas Safari Club): Conservation, Education, and Advocacy. In this episode, Larry Weishuhn sits down in the wilds of West Texas with Jeff Johnston of the NRA and American Hunter. Recorded on a sprawling 40,000-acre cattle ranch near the Mexican border, the two discuss the unique challenges of hunting the "fan-tailed" Carmen Mountain Whitetail in the high desert. Larry and Jeff swap stories about the rugged terrain, the necessity of quality optics, and the diverse wildlife of the Chihuahuan Desert. The conversation then turns to a passionate discussion about the vital importance of the Second Amendment, the role of the NRA, and why unity among gun owners is critical for the future of the United States. [00:00] Intro & Sponsors: Larry introduces the show from the high-elevation desert of West Texas. [02:00] The Landscape: Discussing the "spine-filled" vegetation and diverse wildlife of the Chihuahuan Desert (Javelina, Mule Deer, Elk, Black Bear, and Quail). [04:15] The Carmen Mountain Whitetail: Larry explains the biology of this unique subspecies—smaller than a Coues deer but with a tail the size of a standard whitetail. [06:30] Hunting Stories: Jeff recounts his successful hunt and Larry jokes about "double drop tines." Mentions of Fred Eichler's success in camp. [09:45] Tactics & Gear: The importance of "glassing" in vast country. Discussion on optics (Stealth Vision), rifles, and the necessity of flat-shooting calibers (.270, 7x57, 6.5) and accurate ammo (Hornady). [14:20] The Second Amendment: A serious pivot to the state of gun rights. Larry emphasizes why the 2nd Amendment is the backbone of American freedom. [16:00] The NRA's Role: Why the NRA remains the strongest lobbying organization due to its membership base, not just money. [18:30] Call to Action: Larry urges listeners to write handwritten letters to legislators and maintain membership in gun rights organizations. [21:00] What's Next: Larry discusses his upcoming hunts in Oklahoma and Texas. "Everything here, for the most part, has got spines, stickers... if you look at our hands, you can probably see all the scratches." — Larry Weishuhn "To me, anything that scores 85 or better is one heck of a deer." — Larry Weishuhn on the Carmen Mountain Whitetail "Without the Second Amendment and our ability to own guns, this country will not exist in a relatively short period of time." — Larry Weishuhn This episode is brought to you by: DSC (Dallas Safari Club): Conservation, Education, and Advocacy.
