Two Cannabis Scientists get Nerdy: Genetics & Plant Chemistry

Dr. Riley Kirk welcomes Dr. Anna Schwabe to the Bioactive Podcast for a deep dive into cannabis genetics, cultivar identity, plant chemistry, and the challenges of making sense of cannabis in a rapidly evolving industry. As two cannabis scientists get thoroughly nerdy, they explore the relationship between genetics and chemical expression, why cultivar names matter, and what science can and cannot tell us about predicting cannabis effects. Drawing from years of research in cannabis genomics, chemotypes, and consumer behavior, Anna explains the disconnect between strain names, marketing claims, and actual genetic identity. The conversation examines how genetics, environment, cultivation practices, and post-harvest handling influence the final chemistry of a cannabis product, often making consumer expectations difficult to predict. They also explore the limitations of the indica, sativa, and hybrid framework, discussing why these categories may still serve a purpose for new consumers while highlighting the need for more nuanced approaches to cannabis classification. The discussion dives into terpene science, aroma-based selection, cultivar verification, consumer perception, breeding strategies, and the future of genetic authentication in cannabis. Additionally, Riley and Anna tackle common industry misconceptions, the importance of preserving cannabis history and culture, and how science can help bridge the gap between growers, consumers, researchers, and retailers. Throughout the episode, they emphasize practical ways consumers can make better decisions while exploring the fascinating complexity of cannabis chemistry and genetics. Whether you're a grower, breeder, budtender, researcher, medical patient, or curious consumer, this episode offers valuable insights into how cannabis genetics shape the products we use and the experiences we have. A leaked celebrity tape had the internet doing what it does best: joking first and thinking later. In this episode, I talk through why that whole reaction feels messy, funny, uncomfortable, and honestly a little grimy all at once. I get into the part nobody wants to sit with for too long: where the line is between clowning a headline and losing your humanity. Yes, I bring the jokes. But I also ask a bigger question about revenge porn, celebrity culture, and why people get way too comfortable turning somebody's private humiliation into public entertainment. Along the way, I talk about the media machine, the comment-section psychology behind all this, and why some “funny” moments hit different when you stop and really look at them. And this is where it gets interesting: the conversation isn't really just about one scandal. It's about what we reward online, what we excuse, and what that says about us. If you like hot takes with a side of side-eye, this one's for you. Watch/listen all the way through, then tell me: when does internet humor cross the line? Timestamps 0:06 - I set up the episode and explain why this topic felt impossible to ignore 1:20 - My first reaction to the leaked Diddy tape and why I wasn't feeling the rollout 3:45 - Where the jokes started flying and why the whole thing got uncomfortable fast 7:15 - My take on media coverage, clickbait, and why some questions should never be asked 11:40 - The bigger issue with revenge porn and turning humiliation into content17:30 - Why celebrity sex scandals rarely land the way people think they do 22:10 - My final thoughts on internet culture, shame, and where comedy should stop If this episode made you laugh, pause, or question the timeline for a second, subscribe to Nerdy's Umbrella on YouTube and keep up with the full series. A Forbes investigation by Anna Tong put a number on something Silicon Valley wasn't talking about: a small group of high-end escorts charging AI founders thousands an hour, and selling intellectual conversation about GPUs, crypto, and longevity alongside the sex. This episode breaks down the reporting and the economics behind it. The rates are the headline. Aella, an escort and self-described data scientist, charges $6,000 an hour, the highest rate in the piece, and is credited with coining the "nerd-first" label. Meida Marek charges $3,500 an hour and says she's booked months out. Talia Sable, a former programmer who lists Dungeons & Dragons and supply chain logistics among her interests, charges $3,000. Forbes cites figures up to $23,000 a day and $30,000 a weekend, where five years ago it was rare to charge more than $1,000 an hour. The why is the part worth sitting with. It's a lens on how the AI gold rush is reshaping social life in the Valley, where founders raising at huge valuations and working 100-hour weeks deprioritize ordinary relationships, and a market fills the gap with transactional intimacy that doubles as founder therapy. There's also a labor angle that ties this directly to the AI story. Marek left an entry-level finance job because she grew anxious that AI would automate her career, then pivoted to a relational skill she figured a model couldn't replicate. We cover that bet, whether it holds, and the obvious risks around discretion when founders talk freely in private.A note on the numbers: most of these rates are self-reported marketing, and people in adjacent corners of the industry have publicly called them inflated. Treat them as claimed, not audited.Silicon Valley AI boom, nerdy escorts, intimacy as a service, AI founders, Aella, Meida Marek, Anna Tong Forbes, AI economy, automation, future of work, tech wealth.

You know that moment when you want something badly, but the boring part starts to feel personal? That's what I'm getting into in this episode. I'm talking about the line between real burnout and the kind of frustration that shows up when discipline is being tested. Because a lot of us are calling every hard season burnout, when sometimes the truth is a lot less comfortable. And yeah, I said it. If you're building a business, making content, chasing a creative goal, or trying to get outside the 9-to-5 script, this conversation is for you. I'm sharing why repetitive work matters, how tedious tasks help you set the standard, and why giving up too early can cost you more than you think. Along the way, I also get into mindset, faith, accountability, and the question a lot of people avoid: do you really need rest, or do you need structure? That part right there? It hits. I also feature music from Young G-Way, an artist with a hungry, determined sound that fits this episode's whole message about building something bigger than yourself. If you've been feeling stuck, tired, or tempted to quit, press play. Then let me know in the comments: when does burnout feel real, and when is it just discipline calling your bluff?

Get ready for another unforgettable adventure through fatherhood, fandom, and hilarious life lessons as Charles and Joe roll the dice and let fate decide the path of this episode of Wise_N_Nerdy. The episode opens with the always entertaining Question of the Week: “Which video game world would be the most difficult to survive in for a month?” What begins as a fun hypothetical quickly turns into a survival challenge worthy of gaming legends. The hosts and community throw around brutal worlds and impossible odds, discussing nightmare scenarios from Duke Nukem and the monster-filled chaos of Resident Evil. Between alien invasions, zombie outbreaks, and impossible odds, Charles and Joe debate whether surviving would come down to skill, luck, or simply accepting defeat immediately. As tradition demands, the dice determine the next destination—and naturally they summon a barrage of Bad Dad Jokes, courtesy of Joe's middle child, Bob. Groans echo across the kingdom as joke after joke lands with the perfect blend of cringe, chaos, and dad-approved comedy. The dice roll again and land on the always insightful “Parliament of Papas” segment. This time, the hosts react to a workplace dilemma involving someone who took PTO specifically to enjoy a newly released video game, only to have an entitled coworker pressure them into giving up their day off so she could visit family instead. Charles and Joe unpack expectations around personal time, respecting boundaries, and why rest, hobbies, and recreation are not somehow less valuable simply because they look different from someone else's priorities. Next, fate leads into the reflective “Daddy, Tell Me A Story” segment, where Charles and Joe discuss those unforgettable moments in life when they realized adults don't actually have everything figured out. Through personal stories and honest reflection, they explore how growing up often means discovering that the people you looked up to were simply doing their best. The conversation becomes an unexpectedly meaningful reminder that uncertainty doesn't make someone incapable—it makes them human. The dice continue their journey into the practical “How Do I…?” segment, where the hosts tackle a challenge that becomes surprisingly difficult as life gets busier: How do you make friends as an adult? Charles and Joe explore ways to build meaningful relationships through shared interests, intentional effort, showing up consistently, and creating space for connection. Whether through hobbies, gaming groups, parenting circles, conventions, or simply reaching out first, the discussion offers encouraging advice for anyone trying to expand their community and deepen friendships. Finally, the episode closes with “What Are You Nerding Out About?” Charles shares his excitement over the Netflix adaptation of Devil May Cry, talking about how thoroughly he's enjoying the action, style, and energy of the series. Meanwhile, Joe reflects on quality family time spent introducing his youngest son to Super Mario World—proving once again that some gaming experiences never lose their magic. Joe also talks about completing his first randomizer experience with The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, discovering a fresh new appreciation for a classic adventure through unexpected twists and discoveries. This episode delivers everything Wise_N_Nerdy fans love: gaming discussions, thoughtful conversations, nostalgic stories, practical advice, and enough dad jokes to cause emotional damage. What happens when everybody knows your name... but you still don't feel okay? In this episode, I'm talking about the tension between fame and fulfillment—and why those two things are not the same, no matter how often we act like they are. I get honest about what I want from creating content, what actually helps me sleep at night, and why being seen by more people isn't always the win we think it is. Because the thing is, attention can feel good for a minute. But then what? If the applause gets louder and your peace gets quieter, that's a problem. I also talk about the hidden cost of being known, why some people are chasing visibility when they really want meaning, and how your purpose can take you somewhere bigger than you planned—if you're ready for it. And yeah, I ask the question a lot of us avoid: Is it really worth it? If you're a creator, entrepreneur, or just someone trying to build a life that actually feels good on the inside, this one will hit home. If this conversation makes you think, watch the full episode and let me know: are you chasing attention, or are you chasing peace?

Our guest today is one of the most influential figures at the intersection of education, technology, and social development. He has dedicated his entire career to the question of how learning can become better, more accessible, and more effective. He studied at the College of the Holy Cross and began exploring the role of technology in education early on. His career is characterized by a deep understanding of how systems work and how to change them. He spent over 15 years at Microsoft, most recently as Vice President of Worldwide Education. In this role, he was responsible for global education strategy and collaborated with governments, institutions, and schools around the world. His goal: to rethink education and empower people to develop the skills needed for the 21st century. He led large international teams, forged partnerships with public institutions, and played a key role in shaping how technology is used in classrooms today. After his time at Microsoft, he took on the role of Chief Institution Officer at Nerdy, where he focused on making personalized learning scalable and making schools more student-centered. Today, he is Senior Vice President and General Manager at Coursera. There, he oversees the global enterprise business, which involves collaborating with companies, governments, and universities. It's about nothing less than the question of how learning becomes accessible worldwide and how people can continuously develop themselves. For many years, he has spoken on international stages, advised organizations, and received multiple awards for his work in the field of education technology. For nine years, this podcast has explored the question of how work empowers people rather than weakening them. In over 550 episodes, we've spoken with more then 700 individuals about what has changed and what still needs to change. How is AI changing learningand thus the very foundation of work itself? What does lifelong learning really mean when entire job profiles shift in just a few years? And what responsibility do companies and governments bear when education becomes the central issue for the future? One thing is certain: to solve our current challenges, we need new inspiration. That's why we continue to seek out methods, role models, experiences, tools, and ideas that bring us closer to the heart of New Work. Furthermore, from the very beginning, we've been grappling with the question of whether everyone can truly find and live what they truly, truly want deep down. You've seen the “I blew up overnight” story. I'm calling out what gets left out. In this episode, I talk about the myth of overnight success and why that idea keeps fooling people who are actually putting in real work. The thing is, most “overnight” wins are years in the making. We just meet the person at the loud part. I get personal here too. I share what it's looked like for me to keep building Nerdy's Umbrella, keep showing up, and keep adjusting when things don't click right away. From podcasting since 2018 to learning editing, sound, clips, and promotion on the fly, I'm pulling back the curtain on what steady effort really looks like. I also get into the part people don't talk about enough: what happens after the viral moment. Because if attention shows up tomorrow, would you even be ready for it? And if you're not, then what are you really chasing? If you've been feeling behind, frustrated, or a little played by online success culture, this one is for you. Listen through, then ask yourself what kind of success actually lasts. If this episode hit home, subscribe, watch the full conversation, and tell me in the comments: are we too obsessed with fast success and not enough with staying power?

In this powerful new Nerdy Bitz: TL;DL titled “The Stepmom Trap,” The Reverend Tracy takes a deep dive into one of the most unfairly judged roles in modern family dynamics: the stepmother. Long before a stepmom even has the opportunity to build trust, bond with children, or find her place within a family, society often hands her a villain label wrapped in centuries of cultural baggage.Using the evolution of Hansel and Gretel as a striking example, The Reverend Tracy explores how the original versions of the fairy tale featured the children's biological mother as the parent responsible for abandoning them. Over time, however, later retellings transformed that mother into the now-infamous “evil stepmother,” helping cement one of the most enduring stereotypes in storytelling. From fairy tales to sitcoms to modern social media narratives, stepmothers have repeatedly been portrayed as cold, manipulative, jealous, or dangerous — and The Reverend Tracy examines how deeply those narratives still influence real families today. This episode also explores psychological and sociological studies surrounding blended families, including how unclear roles and unrealistic expectations can create emotional tension for everyone involved. Unlike biological parents, step parents often enter family systems without clearly defined boundaries, authority, or emotional security. The Reverend Tracy discusses how many stepmothers are expected to provide emotional labor, caregiving, and support while simultaneously being criticized for “trying too hard” or accused of overstepping. It's a no-win situation that leaves many step parents feeling isolated, hyper-analyzed, and emotionally exhausted. The Reverend Tracy also tackles the painful reality that genuine love and care from a step parent is often viewed through a lens of suspicion. Whether it's affection being questioned, discipline being scrutinized, or emotional closeness being treated as somehow artificial, step parents frequently face social distrust that biological parents rarely encounter. This episode unpacks the emotional toll of constantly being treated as temporary, secondary, or potentially harmful — even while showing up every day for the children they love.Blending personal insight, cultural analysis, psychology, and storytelling, “The Stepmom Trap” challenges listeners to rethink the stereotypes we casually accept and the damage those assumptions can cause inside blended families. It's an empathetic, thought-provoking conversation about family roles, emotional labor, identity, and the complicated realities of building connection in spaces where trust is often hardest to earn.Support Friends Talking Nerdy on Patreon. As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song. I'm talking about signs, self-doubt, and the moments life gets loud because we ignored the quiet version first. In this episode of Oh, That's Random, I get into something a lot of us feel but don't always name: the way the universe, a higher power, or plain old life keeps trying to get our attention. And the thing is, most of us are so distracted, stressed, or stuck in our own heads that we miss what's right in front of us.I'm sharing why certain patterns keep showing up, why “that's weird” might actually mean “pay attention,” and how self-doubt can make us walk away from exactly what's meant for us. I also get personal about a season in my life when the signs stopped being subtle and started hitting like a brick through a window. If you've ever wondered whether life is trying to tell you something—or if you've been feeling off, stuck, or one step behind your own purpose—this episode will probably hit home. And honestly, it may leave you asking a bigger question: what have you been seeing that you keep brushing off? In this emotionally insightful episode of Nerdy Bitz, The Reverend Tracy returns with a brand-new TL;DL titled “Gilmore Girls, Parentification, And The Romanticization Of Enmeshment.” Using the beloved television series Gilmore Girls as the centerpiece of the discussion, The Reverend Tracy takes a deeper psychological look at the show's famous “best friend mother” dynamic and why so many audiences mistake emotional enmeshment for healthy parenting. While Gilmore Girls is often celebrated for its fast dialogue, quirky charm, and close-knit relationships, this episode explores the darker emotional implications underneath Lorelai and Rory Gilmore's relationship dynamic. The Reverend Tracy examines how the show unintentionally normalizes parentification — a psychological pattern where children take on emotional responsibilities, burdens, or relational roles that are developmentally inappropriate for them.Throughout the episode, she discusses how children placed into emotionally adult roles often become caretakers, mediators, therapists, or emotional support systems for their parents long before they are emotionally equipped to carry those responsibilities. What may appear “cute,” “mature,” or “best-friend-like” on the surface can actually create long-term difficulties involving boundaries, emotional regulation, identity formation, conflict management, and adult relationships later in life. The episode breaks down:What parentification actually isThe difference between closeness and emotional enmeshmentWhy “best friend parenting” can blur emotional boundariesHow children in enmeshed households often suppress their own emotional needsThe psychological consequences of children becoming emotional caretakersHow media romanticizes unhealthy family dynamicsWhy emotionally immature parenting is often misunderstood as relatabilityThe long-term effects parentification can have on anxiety, guilt, people-pleasing, and adult relationshipsThe Reverend Tracy also explores why audiences are frequently drawn to these relationship dynamics in television and film, especially when unhealthy emotional dependency is framed as loyalty, closeness, or unconditional love. Using examples from Gilmore Girls, she highlights how unresolved trauma and emotional loneliness can shape parenting styles in ways that feel normal to viewers who experienced similar family structures growing up.Rather than attacking the series itself, the discussion uses Gilmore Girls as a lens to better understand the importance of healthy boundaries, emotional maturity, and allowing children to fully experience childhood without carrying adult emotional burdens.Support Friends Talking Nerdy on Patreon. As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song. I watched The Belle Collective expecting messy TV. What I got instead was a real question about love, loyalty, and what success can expose. In this episode, I'm talking through the tension that hit me while watching one couple shift in real time. When one partner starts building something bigger, what happens to the marriage that helped get them there? And when money, image, and ambition all change at once, how do you tell the difference between growth and checking out?I get into why one storyline on this reality show felt bigger than reality TV, the moment that made me think divorce might already be loading, and why conversations about trust, value, and partnership get real uncomfortable real fast. I'm also asking a question a lot of people avoid: when somebody says, “I don't need you in this part of my life,” what does that actually mean for the relationship? If you've ever watched a couple outgrow each other—or claim they did—this one's for you. And honestly, I want to know if you saw the same red flags I did.
