Another editorial powerhouse, Bob Schreck has been all over the comics industry for the better part of five decades! He started out organizing and running conventions for Creation Entertainment in the mid 70s, then worked in marketing for Marvel before taking the reins at Comico (with then-wife and past guest Diana Schutz as EIC). From there, it was on to Dark Horse, where Bob expanded from his marketing role into editorial, overseeing such titles as Frank Miller's Sin City, Art Adam's Monkeyman and O'Brien, and the influential anthology Dark Horse Presents. Soon after his Dark Horse stint, he co-founded Oni Press, where among other projects, brought filmmaker Kevin Smith into the comics world. Then it was on to DC, where Bob oversaw huge Batman storylines like Hush, The Dark Knight Strikes Again, and Batman: Year 100, as well as Green Lantern, Green Arrow, All-Star Superman, and Sweet Tooth (Vertigo). And he still wasn't done, working for IDW and Legendary Comics after that. But jeez, we've got to end this intro! You can follow Bob on Facebook._________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. "Do you think you are where you thought you would be 20 years ago?" Dreams and goals we had when we were younger can look and feel a lot different in middle age. In this episode- with a topic posed to us by an audience member- we discuss how we have made our past selves proud and in some ways still have a ways to go. Join us for our first live show in conjunction with Creation Entertainment!
Join Ron and special guest Marina as we do a deep dive into comparing and contrasting both of the domestic Star Trek focused conventions - the 57 Year Mission Tour in Las Vegas, hosted by Creation Entertainment and Star Trek: Mission Seattle, hosted by ReedPop. This week, Bill & Dan review their first Vegas convention in over three years as they recap the goings on at the 56 Year Mission Convention which took place a couple of weeks ago. What went right, what went wrong, and what was up with that live music at the FanGeeks Party, anyway? They'll talk about it all and how they hope next year's return to the Rio All Suites Hotel brings back some qualities this year's show was apparently lacking. All things considered, we still want to thank Creation Entertainment for the great show they put on. As life gets closer to normal in some ways, it's good to be able to come together with our Trek Family.

Captain's Log, stardate... uh, actually, we don't have those on Earth yet. So let's call it Earth-date, August 28th, 2022. Number One (aka Linda) and Number Two (aka Josh Caito) and I beamed into Bally's hotel and casino in Las Vegas for Creation Entertainment's "56 Year Mission" Star Trek convention. Our last trip to this "Kahn" (as attendees like to refer to it) was in 2019, before COVID, and thus a lot of things have changed! To start with, Creation Entertainment is no longer a member of the Federation (read: no longer the Paramount officially licensed conventioneer for Star Trek). So, what did that mean for this years Kahn? Stream this week's episode for a full report live from the convention site! Also, learn about a new, little-known, must-see scifi attraction near the heart of the Las Vegas strip.
Jacob and Kayla discuss what it's like attending a Creation Entertainment convention!
Before we get into our deep dive of Season Two, we wanted to share a special episode of “Enterprise Incidents” that we recorded live in front of an audience at Creation Entertainment's “55 Year Mission” Celebration of “Star Trek” at the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas in August 2021! Throughout the course of our first season, where we re-assessed “Star Trek” as a serialized body of work, we saw The Original Series in a fresh new light and made so many new discoveries — the biggest of which involves the Captain of the Starship Enterprise himself, James T. Kirk. We always thought of Kirk as a bold, brash hero teeming with bravado (which he is), but he had to be a whole lot more than that to make the intelligent, informed and life-saving decisions that he did. So who is James T. Kirk, and how did he get to be this way? Listen to this fun, energetic and revealing live podcast of “Enterprise Incidents” to find out! Yes, it's been a while and yes it's a long one as we were a little jet lagged from Las Vegas and The 55 Year Mission Tour from Creation Entertainment. In this week's episode, we talk extensively about our acquisitions from Sin City and some of the wonderful memories that were made at the former STLV Convention. We pay special tribute to Kenneth Mitchell as he courageously battles ALS and continues to be an inspiration to us all. We also welcome one of our favorite guests, Jake Black. This conversation was incredible as we discuss the many wonderful projects this talented writer has been a part of from Smallville and comics to the DS9 Documentary and our coveted Star Trek Picard Trading cards from Rittenhouse. Jake talks about his extensive collection of cards and action figures. Check out our awards section this week as we hear some of the best and most unique stories ever discussed on the podcast! Creation Entertainment's annual Las Vegas Star Trek convention, now dubbed “The 55-Year Mission Tour”, will return next Wednesday, August 11, after last year's show get postponed twice due to the pandemic. While this year's convention is a go, it hasn't been without its challenges. The Delta variant has caused a surge of infections in Nevada, with mask mandates returning in various counties in the state, including Clark County, where Las Vegas is located. This development has made both fans and celebrities understandably concerned about traveling to the city. Most of the TrekMovie team will be heading to the con, including Shuttlepodders Kayla, Jared, and Brian. In this episode, they preview the convention, their own concerns about navigating a convention during a pandemic, and more. We also spoke to DS9's Chase Masterson, who will be a guest at the con, about how Creation is working to keep the actors safe as well as her work with Pop Culture Hero Coalition, which she'll be promoting at the show.

In Star Trek gaming, we dive further into House Shattered and STO Devs drop in on the team to say "Hello!" Then, Gray takes us down memory lane with another RetroTrekGame review followed by our review of the Season Finale of Lower Decks. Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: Do you believe the Star Trek Franchise is diverse enough to avoid ‘Franchise Fatigue? AND CQ: What Lower Decks content do you want to see in-game? Story missions with Beta Shift? Tulgana IV location map? The Dog? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Alex Kurtzman Takes 5 Alex Kurtzman is a busy man. Other than his work on “The Comey Rule” and the upcoming “Silence of the Lambs” television adaptation titled “Clarice”, Kurtzman also works on a little franchise called Star Trek. This week, Kurtzman sat down with the Hollywood Reporter’s “TV’s Top 5” to discuss everything he’s been working on - and while we may or may not be excited for his other projects - well...let’s just say we aren’t partnered with the Thomas Harris Podcast Network. Kurtzman spent a lot of time talking about Star Trek: Discovery, which is of no surprise - the third season’s premiere is set for October 15th. When asked about how long the series would likely run, Kurtzman was frank in both the series' praise and direction - as well as in the Showrunners commitment to keeping Trek fresh. Along those same lines, Kurtzman noted that he had plans with ViacomCBS for Star Trek that reached - currently - to 2027. When asked whether he was afraid of over-saturating the market with Star Trek, Kurtzman expressed that he felt the world needed the franchise, and that diversity in programming was the key to keeping it relevant. Lower Decks NYCC Panel Last week, in episode 481 of Priority One, we talked about the New York Comic Con Star Trek happenings. But if you’ll remember, we skipped coverage of the Lower Decks panel because it was spoiler heavy. You’ve had a week to catch up, but if you still haven’t watched the season finale of “Lower Decks”, skip to Star Trek Gaming! -- SPOILERS INCOMING -- During the Comic Con panel, Showrunner Mike McMahan and the cast of “Lower Decks” talked about what happened in season 1, and where their characters were heading for season 2 - sans, sadly, Fred Tatasciore’s Lieutenant Shaxs. There were some fun ideas on how to bring back the battle-hardened Bajoran - and discussion on whether he was really dead - or just mostly dead. About half way through the panel, the cast was joined by series special guest Jonathan Frakes, and that’s when things got predictably spoiler-y. As it turns out, Frakes spoiled plot points for co-star Jack Quaid before the show even started. Of Riker, and his appearance on Lower Decks, Showrunner Mike McMahan stressed the characters' fun attitude and joy. And if you’re concerned that Boimler will mysteriously find his way back to the Cerritos for the Season 2 premiere, fear not. He will be on the Titan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLVO17dQOS8 Mike McMahan Talks Lower Decks This week, Mike McMahan took a Season One victory lap - of sorts - hitting Youtube, Variety, and Inverse to discuss what happened on and off screen during “Lower Decks” first season. On Youtube, McMahan explained his thoughts behind using the Pakled as the finale’s “Big Bads”. He continued those musings with Variety, before moving on to spoilers - and cheeky possible-spoilers. ”We’ll see the Titan next season because Boimler is off the Cerritos, and we’ll be seeing Capt. Riker again as well. Boimler has been talking about moving on to bigger and better all first season, and now we’re going to see what happens when he gets what he wants.”. McMahan said Councilor Troi would NOT make in appearance in Season 2. But when asked if OTHER TNG Alumn would join, noted, ”That, my friend, I will not tell you, I would say, feels like a pretty good chance of it.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxWq77kgg3Q McMahan told Variety that the second season of Lower Decks would dive deeper into sexuality - Mariner’s specifically - saying ”For me and for the writers as we were making this, we didn’t intentionally mean for anybody to be strictly heteronormative or straight or cis. Every Starfleet officer is probably at the baseline bisexual, in a way. That being said, I am not the most amazing person at writing those kind of stories. I think we get a little bit better about it in the second season.” Mike McMahan Keeps Talking Lower Decks Heading to Inverse, McMahan may have answered a question we’ve asked on Priority One. Could Lower Decks be an off-kilter representation of the Cerritos’ adventures through Starfleet gossip? ”If you’re in Starfleet, and all this stuff has happened, it would be like if you were in the military now, and you were reading about — or hearing about – [real events] either officially or word of mouth through people who have been on ships, or people catching up. There are so many people on these ships, of course they’re going to talk to each other. They’re going to take real life events and put those into media. I think what I’m trying to say is there is no one unifying theory of communication. To me, it’s more that there’s going to be mosaic of communication. There’s things that are going to be popularized, there’s things in the news, there’s things you’ll learn at Starfleet academy there’s going to be stuff you’ll hear rumors about. It’s out there and it’s going to be known.” If you’re wondering about the “First Contact” uniforms making an appearance on Lower Decks, McMahan had an answer for that too! ”I’m very fascinated with the idea that we have replicators [in Star Trek] that can make anything. But who’s designing that stuff? It becomes like intellectual items, like why aren’t they all eating Lincoln’s last meal? The more you look at it, some ships would have different stuff, which is why you’d want to get the thing with the purple stripe on it, which goes all the way down to uniforms. I mean why is Starfleet even in uniforms? It’s not to make them camouflaged and they’re not strictly military. It’s representational of who Starfleet is.” STLV 2020 CANCELLED We’ve got some breaking news tonight, thanks to our Associate Producer Shane Hoover. According to NBC news affiliate Las Vegas 3, the official Star Trek Las Vegas convention has been cancelled. From the website, "Creation Entertainment, the company that brings the Trek convention each year, has announced that the December 2020 show is not going to happen due to pandemic-related reasons. The Star Trek convention will resume next year in Las Vegas on August 11 - 15 at the Rio.” Though we couldn't find any OFFICIAL release from Creation Entertainment at the time of this writing, their previous STLV 2020 page is no longer accessible. Instead it gives way to the 55th anniversary of Star Trek - and creator Gene Roddenberry’s 100th Birthday - in 2021. Keep your ear right here for more on the news. Star Trek Gaming News by Shane Hoover and Thomas Reynolds Venture(Beat) into the Final Frontier By Thomas Reynolds Newer captains may find it hard to believe (and older captains harder to accept), but Cryptic Studios opened its doors before the NX-01 first left spacedock. This year Cryptic celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and last week tech business magazine VentureBeat published an interview with Cryptic CEO Stephen D’Angelo. In the interview D’Angelo shows off his toy cabinet (he has a Galaxy-X model, not that we’re jealous or anything), and speaks about thirteen years with a game company driven by outside IP. Saying specifically of Star Trek Online, ”Star Trek is a universe more than a storytelling style. We’ve tried to, like I said, give people an experience in that universe that captures the look, the feel, and the stories, but going for the diversity the universe offers”. D’Angelo also talked about being STO’s executive producer when it went free-to-play, the changing nature of the game’s playerbase, and the company’s history in the MMO space as a whole. The Titan Reprises A Familiar Tune? By Thomas Reynolds Captains, be advised: the Trek nuggets in this segment may spoil your dinner. Proceed with caution. Last week’s season finale of Star Trek Lower Decks captivated us with drama, tragedy, callbacks, comedy–you know, all that jazz. While the show taketh away (RIP Shaxs), it might also giveth STO players something they’ve wanted for a very long time. On October 9th, the official STO Twitter account dropped a screenshot of the in-game Titan and quoted its swingin’ captain’s call to action. Admittedly, this doesn’t explicitly say what is going on with the Titan in 2411. Cryptic may have simply been capitalizing on the ship’s newfound public awareness. However, we had it from Ambassador Kael himself that “there’s something coming from Lower Decks soon-ish,” but he couldn’t tell us about it lest he ”spoil a surprise in the last episode.” It’s hard not to imagine a T6 Luna-class is finally in the cards, and its holodeck has the Bourbon Street Bar already loaded. Or maybe we’re getting little horga'hn ground devices for the upcoming Tulgana IV map. https://twitter.com/trekonlinegame/status/1314569893358968832 Synth Wave: the Extended Remix By Thomas Reynolds Hopefully you’ve had a chance to play House Shattered’s new TFO, “Synth Wave,” since it was released last week. If you have, you might've noticed some of the escaping ships really seem to like the Utopia Planitia Starbase, because they never leave it. On October 9th, the official STO Twitter account also confirmed that ships were getting stuck within the starbase, which means they could never leave and the TFO could never end. Cryptic says it’ll fix the issue with the October 13th patch, and the event will be extended by another week to make up for the bug. Apparently you shouldn’t let homicidal AIs write your Holodeck code. https://twitter.com/trekonlinegame/status/1314617854197526531?s=20

This week on Episode 464 of Priority One --- We ‘Trek Out’ STLV’s TWO big changes, Jason Isaacs’ thoughts on Prime Lorca, Jeffrey Combs clears up some confusion, and Jason Zimmerman talks special effects! In Star Trek Gaming, we have a call to action! Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: Where do YOU think Prime Lorca is? Do you want to see him in future Trek? AND CQ: What object in Romulan lore do you think could be a “Legendary” Item? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Star Trek Las Vegas Moved to December Star Trek Las Vegas. A place where thousands of Star Trek fans meet to celebrate our favorite franchise. A place that brings the creative minds behind the property - and the fans that have helped keep it alive for over fifty years - together. A place where you must remain indoors because it’s August in the desert, and there is fear of spontaneously combusting, melting into the pavement, or becoming a gas through sublimation. Sadly, this year, Star Trek fans won’t have the opportunity to OFFICIALLY meet up in Las Vegas this August. But imagine being able to celebrate STLV without fear of looking like Arnold Toht - at the end of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” - if we venture out for fresh air?!? On Friday June 5th, Creation Entertainment released an update to the 2020 Official Star Trek: Las Vegas Convention. From the release ”The 19th Annual Star Trek Convention’s NEW DATE is now December 9-13, 2020 and is beaming into Caesars Forum Conference Center Las Vegas, the brand-new state of the art, $375 million facility located in the heart of the famed Las Vegas Strip! Caesars Forum Conference Center features direct access to our new host hotel, the newly renovated Harrah’s Las Vegas!” That’s right! This year the convention will take place in December, and it WON’T be at the Rio. Creation followed, saying ”William Shatner, Walter Koenig, Kelsey Grammer and more guests have confirmed the new date, and we are currently working on more confirmations.” If you’re still not comfortable making plans to travel at this time, or simply can’t go in December, Creation is suggesting you cancel your room at the Rio, call your airline, and cancel your tickets to the convention through a link provided in their release. But act fast, the deadline to cancel convention tickets is June 19th, 2020. Jason Isaacs Talks About Returning To Pike as Lorca When Jason Isaacs was cast as the Captain of the USS Discovery, some people rose an eye-brow. It was interesting that the Villain from “The Patriot” , “Harry Potter”, and “The OA” - as well as the voice of Iconic super villains Lex Luthor, Ra's al Ghul, and Sinestro - was going to be one of Discovery’s heroes, Captain Gabriel Lorca. As Discovery’s first season unfolded, and it was revealed that Lorca should have had a goatee, few viewers were shocked; But Isaacs compelling portrayal left fans thirsty for more, and many were asking ‘where is PRIME Lorca’? As it turns out, it wasn’t only fans asking about the devious would-be-emperor’s doppelganger In an interview with the “Empire Films Podcast”, Jason Isaacs asked that very question. He said ”Where is Prime Lorca? Well, I admit that we talk. It’s not like when Mirror Lorca bit the bullet there wasn’t a clamoring for Prime Lorca, but the thing is, it has got to be a great story. Pike is already there! We know what he is like. We have seen him and he’s great. We don’t know who Prime Lorca is.” Isaacs went on to explain that no one wants to see an indecisive, logy character, saying /”He is going to have to be as interesting, as ballsy, and you have to find him a ship and find him a context to bring him into a story. So, we talk. And when and if we come up with something we think is fabulous I will happily go on a starvation diet required to slip into the snakeskin uniform again.” Jeffrey Combs on Returning To Trek A couple of weeks ago, we mentioned the hopeful proposition of a Jeffrey Combs return to Star Trek - this time as Captain Pike’s booze chucking Chief Medical Officer, Doctor Boyce. If you’ll recall, Combs was doubtful of the casting, saying ”the chasm between what fans want and what the studios want make the chances of it happening slim to none.... and Slim left town.”. But Combs clarified his comments this week, when he sat down with friends of the Roddenberry Podcast Network, Trekmovie.com Combs told Trekmovie he was surprised that the Twitter exchange had become newsworthy, before clearing up his statements ”Some people were saying, “Jeff says he doesn’t want to do it!” And that wasn’t my point at all. My point was there has always been a disconnect between and fans and the networks and studios. It goes all the way back and not just with Star Trek. There is often this disconnect and that is what my tweet was about. What you want and what they want is most of the time not in harmony…I took it as a compliment that people wanted me to be a part of it. It doesn’t mean I wouldn’t relish it or jump in and embrace it, but I have to be a bit of a realist here and it is not likely.” Combs also took the opportunity to explain his reaction, saying ”I deeply appreciate the enthusiasm of the fans. I love them so much. …I would love it. I was completely surprised the fans jumped all over that and I guess my tweet was an attempt to go: Thank you, I appreciate that, but let’s be realistic. I have to be realistic. No one wants their hopes to be dashed on the rocks of disappointment.” VFX Supervisor Jason Zimmerman Sits Down With Deadline It’s said that the most impressive special effects are those that the audience doesn’t consciously notice. If that’s true, Picard VFX Supervisor Jason Zimmerman and his team should be considered some of the best in the business. This week, the accomplished Zimmerman sat down with Deadline to discuss the challenges of working on Star Trek, and the importance of honoring what has come before. Zimmerman talked about the subtle work of “layering” effects to make sets look futuristic while still looking recognizable, like the sweeping shots of Okinawa or Boston, saying ”I think you first sort of establish the basic geometry and layout of the city, or the location that you’re shooting, Then, you start to go in and dress things to camera, like sky traffic shuttles, holograms, to sort of flesh the world out and make it feel scope-y.” The 2-time Emmy winner also discussed the importance of the past when creating new effects, telling Deadline ”Working with these canon things, like the [Starship] Enterprise and the Borg cube, it’s always a little bit daunting to be responsible for something that’s so revered, [that’s] been depicted so many times, so what you definitely don’t want to do is go back and start from scratch. You have probably the best amount of research and reference humanly possible for any show, so you definitely start there, and want to make sure that you don’t do anything that doesn’t make any sense. That’s, for us, a very important part of the process, doing our research and checking with everybody who knows the Star Trek universe, to ensure that we’re actually treating these things appropriately.” Gaming News by Shane Hoover and Thomas Reynolds Scopely Supports Black Lives Matter Last week, we touched on the Star Trek world’s responses to the ongoing protests and social upheaval in the United States, and around the world. This week, another part of the Star Trek gaming universe has shown their support. Scopely, the makers of Star Trek Fleet Command, recently donated $1 Million to the Black Lives Matter Foundation, NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, and the Equal Justice Initiative. The company stated “The time is now to listen, learn, and act for FOREVER change” Star Trek Timelines June Events June is lined up to be a big month for players of Star Trek Timelines. Starting on June 11th, Timelines will be celebrating Pride month. This month’s campaign will focus on DS9’s Lenara Kahn and “Reinforcements” Stamets as featured crew. On top of that, June is also time for the traditional Players Choice Month in Timelines. Players Choice will kick off a Mega-Event based on Voyager’s “Before and After” episode. This event will feature the Nacine, Suspiria, and a brand new Tholian starship. Players Choice month will also feature a theme pack chosen by the players, Homesteader Janeway from the episode “Resolutions”. A Call To Action
