Don't miss our fascinating interview with Daniel Sumegi, the international Opera Star, based in New York. Daniel was born in Sydney and is the grandson of Hungarian Auschwitz survivor, who moved with family to Sydney in 1952. Daniel is currently in Australia to sing the leading role of Opera Australia’s production Bluebeard’s Castle, written by Bella Bartok in 1911.
On this episode, I talk to my friend Ella about Béla Bartók's only opera Bluebeard's Castle. Incidentally, the Hungarian opera is based on a French folk tale from the Middle Ages. This is a two-for-one episode: an opera recap and a folk tale recap! We chat about the creepiness of emotionally closed and murderous men, the nightmares the original folk tale gave me, relationship dynamics, and whether or not the protagonist in this one is truly evil.

We are super jazzed to talk about one of Naomi and Elspeth's favorite operas - BLUEBEARD'S CASTLE by Béla Bartók! Based on fairy tale sources, this is a seriously awesome stage work, and one could debate themes and layers of meaning all day long. Bluebeard has been rumored to have killed his former wives. He has now married Judith, and told her she can go and do anything in his castle EXCEPT look behind a set of 7 doors. You can begin to imagine how well this goes... listen to the episode for more - you won't regret it!
