It was an extraordinary public fight between two billionaires—President Donald Trump, the world's most powerful man, and Elon Musk, the world's richest. On a special bonus episode of the GZERO World Podcast, Ian Bremmer sits down with Semafor co-founder and editor-in-chief Ben Smith to talk about Trump and Musk's messy breakup, what led to the explosive public fallout, and whether there's any chance of reconciliation. Though their feud appears to be cooling down, there's still a lot at stake for both men: namely, Musk's political funding for the GOP ahead of the 2026 midterms and billions in government contracts and subsidies for his companies, which Trump has threatened to cancel. In the battle between politicians and tech oligarchs, who holds more power? Will President Trump's ability to punish his enemies in consequential ways have long-term consequences for Musk? And how does a fight like this change the nature of political journalism when everything is happening in real time in full view of the public? Smith and Bremmer break down the end of the bromance that has defined President Trump's second term and where the administration's relationship with Silicon Valley goes from here.Host: Ian BremmerGuest: Ben Smith Subscribe to the GZERO World with Ian Bremmer Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your preferred podcast platform, to receive new episodes as soon as they're published.

In the latest Facts vs Feelings, Ryan Detrick, Chief Market Strategist, and Sonu Varghese, VP, Global Macro Strategist, unpack the political feud between Donald Trump and Elon Musk — and what it signals for markets, sentiment, and investor behavior. But this episode covers more than just political drama: Ryan and Sonu break down what recent data says about inflation, the labor market, and Federal Reserve policy, while stressing the importance of not overreacting to headlines.Key TakeawaysTheater Meets Market Implications The Trump-Musk spat included insults, accusations, and the threat of government contract cancellations. Ryan and Sonu dig into how this narrative dominated headlines and its potential impact on investor sentiment.Markets Rally Despite the Drama Despite political noise, equity markets have remained resilient. The S&P 500 has posted strong returns since April lows, reflecting underlying market strength.Economic Data Is Mixed, Not Recessionary While headlines emphasize slowing job growth and sticky inflation, Ryan and Sonu stress that the broader picture doesn't scream recession. Job openings remain high, unemployment is low, and wages continue to rise.Fed Remains Cautious While job growth is slowing and inflation still sticky, the Fed is likely to keep interest rates paused for the foreseeable future—though a drop in inflation could trigger a reexamination.Watch Market Breadth and Participation Rather than obsess over megacap tech stocks, the hosts urge listeners to track participation across sectors and in global markets. HEADLINES the last 48 hours have been dominated by the public spat between President Trump and Elon Musk. What does it mean? To us, it seems like what pro wrestlers call kayfabe—a performance for the audience that looks real but is just an act. It's in the best interests of the government (at least as far as NASA and SpaceX are concerned) and Musk to patch things up. This could be a way to flush out people in the administration who aren't loyal to President Trump. On the other hand, if this is legit it could be President Trump's way of distancing himself from the “tech bros” like Musk, Peter Thiel, and Larry Ellison. We think that's less likely given the Trump administration's commitment to develop artificial intelligence. However, we note recent news stories about AI models that have lied, cheated, and threatened its engineers. And this week, it was reported that the newest OpenAI models rewrote its code during testing to avoid being shut down—in other words, refusing to obey a direct order! The conflict ignited when Musk publicly criticized Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill," labeling it a "disgusting abomination" due to its potential to increase the national deficit and cut electric vehicle subsidies. Trump retaliated by threatening to revoke federal contracts with Musk's companies and dismissed Musk as having "lost his mind." This public spat has caused divisions within Silicon Valley and raised questions about the future of their political alliance. The podcast also highlights a heartwarming story from the entertainment world: Rumi Carter, the seven-year-old daughter of Beyoncé and Jay-Z, has made her stage debut on the Cowboy Carter Tour. According to her grandmother, Tina Knowles, Rumi persistently asked to join her mother and sister, Blue Ivy, on stage, showcasing her eagerness to perform. On a more contentious note, the show discusses the ongoing custody battle between rapper DDG and singer Halle Bailey. DDG's mother, Tonya Granberry, alleges that Bailey used hidden AirTags to track her son during their relationship, adding another layer of complexity to their legal disputes. What a wild week it's been for NASA. With drastic budget cuts looming—pending any action by Congress—then comes the sudden and unexpected pulling of Jared Isaacman for the role of NASA Administrator, with no replacement named. Then came the very public split between President Trump and Elon Musk, and a flurry of furious Twitter/X and Truth Social postings, aimed at each other with razor-sharp edges. And finally, the proposed and drastic cuts to NASA outreach and education budgets, slimming them to nearly nothing. These are strange and concerning times for America's space agency, a premier global brand and icon of peaceful American prowess. We turned to Casey Dreier, the Chief of Space Policy for The Planetary Society, who has been quite vocal in his concern, for context. These are critical times for spaceflight, so you won't want to miss this episode!Headlines Trump and Musk "Bromance" Ends: Rod Pyle and Tariq Malik discuss the public falling out between Donald Trump and Elon Musk, which included Trump's threats to cancel SpaceX contracts and Musk's counter-accusations regarding the Jeffrey Epstein files. Commercial Crew Program and Boeing's Starliner: Tariq Malik highlights the critical role of SpaceX's Dragon in NASA's commercial crew program, especially given Boeing's Starliner delays, making NASA dependent on SpaceX for U.S. independent access to space. Japanese ispace Lunar Lander Failure: Rod Pyle and Tariq Malik discuss the second failed attempt by the Japanese company ispace to land its Hakuto-R lunar lander on the moon, losing the European Space Agency's mini-rover, called Tenacious, in the process. Speculation on SpaceX Nationalization: The hosts discuss online speculation, including from Steve Bannon, about the possibility of the U.S. government nationalizing SpaceX, and Elon Musk's subsequent de-escalation. LAUNCH Act: Rod Pyle introduces the bipartisan LAUNCH Act, aimed at streamlining licensing for commercial space companies to encourage more rocket launches with faster approvals. Senate Reconciliation Bill: Tariq Malik and Rod Pyle discuss Senator Ted Cruz's Senate reconciliation bill, which proposes to restore funding for the Space Launch System (SLS), increase NASA's budget by $10 billion, and fund Artemis 4 and 5, missions previously targeted for alternate architectures. 60th Anniversary of First U.S. Spacewalk: The hosts commemorate Ed White's historic spacewalk during the Gemini 4 mission in 1965 and discuss anecdotes and lingering questions surrounding the event. Definition of an Astronaut/Spacewalker Debate: Rod Pyle and Tariq Malik briefly touch on the ongoing debate about what defines an "astronaut" or "spacewalker," given varying definitions and commercial spaceflight. Tribute to Marc Garneau: The hosts pay tribute to Marc Garneau, Canada's first astronaut, who passed away at 76, highlighting his career with the Canadian Space Agency and his later political career. The Dark Age of NASA Science The Planetary Society's Mission: Space policy expert Casey Dreier provides an overview of the Planetary Society, its founding by Carl Sagan, its independence from government and corporate funding, and its projects like the Lightsail 2. Friday Focus provides listeners with a focused, half-hour masterclass on the big issues, events and trends driving the news and current events. The show features Janice Gross Stein, the founding director of the Munk School of Global Affairs and bestselling author, in conversation with Rudyard Griffiths, Chair and moderator of the Munk Debates. Rudyard and Janice start the show talking about the blowup of the bromance between Donald Trump and Elon Musk which took place in spectacular fashion over twitter. Was Elon's performance a genuine show of dismay at a congressional spending bill that flies in the face of all the cost cutting initiatives he was pursuing with DOGE? Or Is this a man having a nervous breakdown in public? And how will this breakup affect support from other tech billionaires and fracture the MAGA coalition? In the second half of the show Rudyard and Janice turn to the surprise Ukrainian drone attack that targeted Russian air bases hosting nuclear-capable strategic bombers thousands of km away from the border of Ukraine. What will Putin's response be to this brazen attack? How will the use of cheap weapons to destroy expensive weapons change the face of warfare? And finally, how will the loss of some of its military capacity affect Russia's war with Ukraine and its relationship with NATO?
