The Martians are coming! Don't trust anyone! So it goes when a young boy descends into a nightmare of tentacled alien heads, mind-controlled parents, and Martians in green pajamas. And it's all shot in surreal, colorful imagery. Grab your telescopes, get in your tank, and cover your necks - we're digging into this seminal, yet underseen, sci-fi film that influenced the likes of Spielberg, Scorsese, Dante, Cameron, and more. Then, if that wasn't enough, Peter Lorre trims his lilacs on the Poverty Row Picture Show covering the John Carradine classic, Bluebeard (1944). What a time to be alive! Another moral: Apply logic to this grim story, and you will ascertain that it took place many years ago. Join Jim & Livio as they once again travel to Paris and are witness to the crimes of the person known as 'Bluebeard'. Made in 1944 and directed by Edgar G. Ulmer (The Black Cat, 1934) and starring John Carradine. Carradine delivers one of his finest performances as the tortured, yet evil Gaston Morrell. The film also stars Jean Parker, Nils Asther, Ludwig Stossel, and Sonia Sorrell. What on the surface seems like a typical 1940's PRC quickie horror movie, it quickly turns to a fantastically dark, moody, and deep horror film. This is truly a hidden gem of the 40's horror cycle! When a savage creature known only as the Adversary conquered the fabled lands of legends and fairy tales, all of the infamous inhabitants of folklore were forced into exile. Disguised among the normal citizens of modern-day New York, these magical characters have created their own peaceful and secret society within an exclusive luxury apartment building called Fabletown. But when Snow White's party-girl sister, Rose Red, is apparently murdered, it is up to Fabletown's sheriff, a reformed and pardoned Big Bad Wolf, to determine if the killer is Bluebeard, Rose's ex-lover and notorious wife killer, or Jack, her current live-in boyfriend and former beanstalk-climber. Michelle is back again to continue our discussion of the beautiful films of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. This time we look at perhaps P&P at their most exquisite, as we discuss how The Red Shoes, The Tales of Hoffmann and Bluebeard's Ghost all appeal to us, who aren't opera or ballet fans but who love a beautiful film. The big surprise for us was Bluebeard's Ghost, a short film for German TV that's rarely seen today. We tracked down a copy and found the film gorgeous in its minimalism - well, hey, listen to the pod to hear what we thought of it in detail!

When Kathryn Wombacher suspected her husband, Walter Andrew, of having an affair in the spring of 1920, she hired a private detective to follow him on one of his many “out-of-town” trips that he'd taken in their short marriage. However, rather than follow Walter out of town, the private detective tracked the man less than a mile from his home in Hollywood, where he discovered that Walter had indeed been carrying on a relationship with another woman—but that was to be the least of Kathryn's worries.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1920. Two friends and academics recap classic literature and take it off its pedestal. In our sixtieth episode and Halloween special, we examine Angela Carter's feminist novella and Bluebeard retelling (which is NOT an adult version of a fairy tale), The Bloody Chamber (1979). In this episode, Daniel expresses Carter-fatigue and we praise Carter's depiction of sex with someone gross.Cover art © Catherine Wu.Episode Theme: Bela Bartok, Duke Bluebeard's Castle, an Opera in One Act, 1965. Two years ago for Halloween, I presented the first of my “Haunted Opera House” episodes. At the time, I had such a plethora of creepy musical material that I produced a bonus episode of material that otherwise would have ended up in the dung heap (like the body of Faust at the end of Schnittke's Faust Cantata, which closes the episode). We also hear music from Damn Yankees featuring the red-hot Gwen Verdon; Dvořák's Rusalka (a stunning duet with Teresa Stratas and Gwendolyn Killebrew); Respighi's comic opera Belfagor (in which a devil [Lajos Miller] encounters his superior in a cunning young woman [Sylvia Sass]; Ernest Bloch's Macbeth (in which Inge Borkh gives a luminous performance of Lady Macbeth's Sleepwalking Scene); Willem Pijper's strange musical drama based on the medieval legend of Halewijn, a Bluebeard of the Lowlands; La Chute de la Maison Usher, (the climax of Claude Debussy's incomplete opera based on Edgar Allan Poe's Fall of the House of Usher); and Antikrist, Rued Langgaard's unique, indescribable, and nearly unstageable mystery play. But it is Iva Bittová's gleefully deranged performance of Alfred Schnittke's gruesome Faust tango which will, I predict, find its way into your nightmares! Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. This week, the sublime Julia Varady celebrated her 83rd birthday, and here at Countermelody that is an occasion well worth commemorating and celebrating. I'm newly home in Berlin, but with a huge pile of “welcome home” stuff that I have to attend to, so this episode consists of bonus content that I published a year ago while I was (once again) in transit between my extended visit to the US and my return home to Berlin. It was a doozy of a trip (and not in a good way!) but this is a doozy of an episode in the best way possible. That Julia Varady could sing! And this episode presents numerous extended operatic excerpts, from Otello, Lear, Feuersnot, Pique-Dame, and Forza del destino, plus songs by Bartók, Zemlinsky, and Kodály, the latter of which in particular, an arrangement of a Hungarian folk song which offers a feminist spin on the Bluebeard story, will knock you on your ear!
The Adventures of Sam Spade, a popular crime drama, aired from 1946 to 1951. Howard Duff portrayed Sam Spade, a hardboiled San Francisco detective. The show featured intricate cases and compelling storytelling. William Spier, a renowned radio producer, assembled a talented writing team. Duff's distinctive voice and acting prowess brought the character to life. The show's success led to Duff's national fame. Duff eventually left the show for film opportunities, and Stephen Dunne replaced him. However, the change in voice and style affected the show's popularity, leading to its cancellation in 1951. Despite its relatively short run, The Adventures of Sam Spade left a lasting impression on the radio detective genre and is cherished by old-time radio enthusiasts. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dwight-allen0/support

Part 4: In the thrilling conclusion of Dreamworld, the Redeemers must mount a daring final mission to restore the world to its rightful state. With the fate of both Dreamworld and Earth hanging in the balance, they will face their greatest challenges yet. Alliances will be tested, sacrifices will be made, and the power of belief will be pushed to its limits. Will Cassidy and the Redeemers succeed in setting things right, or will the forces of darkness prevail? Don't miss this epic finale that will determine the future of Dreamworld and all who inhabit it. About DreamWorld "Dreamworld" transports us to a place far beyond imagination, where the fanciful inhabitants of bedtime stories roam free behind magic barriers. But when grief-stricken Cassidy arrives via Father Time's whims, he discovers this wonderland in peril. The villainous Sleeper has shaken Dreamworld from its slumber after the untimely death of Princess Marigold, imposing a cruel new order devoid of “happily ever after.” Yet rebel Jack and his motley crew of fairy tale renegades still fight to restore their realm's happily-ever-afters. These valiant “Redeemers” - Red Riding Hood's feisty granddaughter Scarlett, lovesick ex-pirate Bluebeard, towering gentle giant Mastodon - join Cassidy on his time-twisting quest. Fantasy and reality collide as enemies become allies, innocence turns to experience, and make-believe becomes life or death. Layering postmodern wit atop old world sublimity, “Dreamworld” casts ageless characters in a newly complex light. The big bad wolf howls with regret, Cinderella asserts her dignity under oppression, and the skin-deep hero discovers his commanding heart. By making fantasy painfully real, the creator renews its power to inspire hope. Sword fights and sorcery abound on this spirited cinematic adventure, clearly crafted with epic spectacle in mind. Yet swashbuckling showmanship belies sensitivity. When forces of evil shatter to reveal frightened souls, when a sound heart guides a wayward giant home, “Dreamworld” transcends sensation to find timeless truth. We all must wake up and battle dragons, but castles await those brave enough to dream. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
