153 | Why Mobility Matters for Hypertrophy or Strength Gains

The FITSPRO Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 17, 2022 16:57

Mobility came on the fitness scene in large thanks to CrossFit. Perhaps you disagree or perhaps that is even untrue. But in 2011-2013 CrossFit was booming and thus came a large demand and need for mobility in the fitness industry. People like Kelly Starrett with Supple Leopard, and resources like ROMWOD mobility became more advisable than ever (from my experience and perspective). To my knowledge, mobility has been an important part of sports like weightlifting for decades. But was not as aggressively integrated into general strength training. Here's the deal, mobility is, in short, your active range of motion. This is in contrast to flexibility which is your passive range of motion. Sitting in the middle splits is your passive range of motion, while sliding down into and back out of the middle splits is your active range motions. Can your muscles get you into and out of your end ranges? As you can imagine from these definitions, flexibility is the potential for mobility. For instance if you can't get there passively, then you more than likely won't be able to get to or past that point actively. Why does all of this matter for putting on muscle and/or gaining strength? I am guessing you'll have more questions after listening to this podcast than when you came into it. But I don't think that's entirely a bad thing. I will do my best to keep it clear and concise, providing disclaimers where needed. I say that because this is not black and white. So, stay curious, and keep context in mind as we move forward. For starters, it comes down to muscle fiber recruitment. One could think of range of motion as the practical use of mobility within weight lifting. Range of motion is simply the distance traveled from start to finish of an exercise. Are you lowering all the way down in pull ups, are you squatting ass to grass? These would be considered FULL range of motion (or ROM). I hope you can see that if you lack mobility in a given area, you may be limiting your potential range of motion in a given lift. This is not the end of the world, most people have mobility restrictions and can still put on plenty of muscle. I don't wish to scare you or over complicate this. Why does range of motion matter for strength or hypertrophy? We answer these questions because they CAN BE connected. Muscle mass is the potential for strength. Muscle is the how the body will eventually demonstrate strength (force production). So now we ask how we build muscle. As discussed on many episodes, there are three main factors - being mechanical tension (this is most important), metabolic stress, and muscle damage. We will be thinking about mechanical tension and maybe muscle damage. For a muscle to contract, muscle fibers are recruited. Number of muscle fibers recruited and strength of a contraction are positively correlated. Meaning more fibers = higher contraction. This is what we are after both for strength and hypertrophy. That is also where range of motion comes in. Within range of motion, the muscle is lengthening - this is known as the eccentric phase. That means the shortening phase only has to contract within the range the muscle was lengthened. That also limits the fibers which are recruited. More range of motion has the potential to mean MORE FIBERS recruited. And that means more potential mechanical tension and muscle damage. Ideally, with proper load, recovery, and diet, muscle cell growth or strength gains. Think about body building and the idea that they want to stress a given muscle from as many angles as possible. The literal point of this is to maximize motor unit recruitment and fatigue. The same applies here. More range of motion or improved range of motion could mean more fibers working. Remember I said this was not black and white. Just using full range of motion in the absence of a load challenging enough to stimulate the muscles is not going to equate to more muscle or strength.

Long time listeners might remember the words split property taxes. The idea being - the city of Detroit's tax burden is only second only to New York City. But, I don't know if you've looked around. We don't have the household incomes, the commerce, or the number of people to support that. We were closer to that many decades ago. But no more. So the idea is to change the code to make it so land speculators and others would get punished, and those who are taking care of and improving their land get rewarded. Now that the city of Detroit has a better handle of its finances and we're not immediately after bankruptcy, maybe it's time for the city leaders to look to the future. What could we do different to truly become more resident-friendly and more competitive for businesses of all sizes? What if we could change the system so there were fewer foreclosures and more people stay in their homes? When we talked about this last, it was more theoretical. Now, there's a new report by the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and commissioned by some local big hitters in Invest Detroit and the Kresge Foundation.  That, if you're paying attention, is major local interest in the topic. Nick Allen, an author of the report, joins us to discuss it. If this is your first time meeting the show, don't forget to follow us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you download your favorite shows. U.S. home prices in March climbed a record 20.9% year over year, but the explosive pace of appreciation is expected to cool down to the single digits by the same time next year. The jump in March marks the 122nd consecutive month that the annual housing-price measure has increased, according to CoreLogic‘s recent national Home Price Index report. Mounting mortgage rates and home prices are creating increasing affordability pressures for some prospective buyers. “The annual growth in the U.S. index was the largest we have measured in the 45-year history of the CoreLogic Home Price Index,” Frank Nothaft, chief economist at CoreLogic, said in a statement. “In April, 30-year fixed mortgage rates averaged nearly 2 percentage points higher than one year earlier. “With the growth in home prices, that means the monthly principal and interest payment to buy the median-priced home was up about 50% in April [2022] compared with last April.” As of April 21, the payment-to-income ratio for homeowners was 32.5%, just 1.6 percentage points shy of the record of 34.1% in July 2006, according to Black Knight's latest monthly Mortgage Monitor report. Black Knight forecasts that a 5% increase in home prices would push affordability to its worst level on record. Housing prices are up 5.9% since the start of the year. Buyers who closed on a property in March had a good chance of locking in mortgage rates at around 4%. By late April, rates had climbed past 5% — and were up by more than 200 basis points from the same period last year. That trend might derail more prospective buyers, CoreLogic noted. Interest rates hit 5.10% last week, compared with 2.98% a year ago, according to Freddie Mac PMMS. Black Knight's Optimal Blue OBMMI pricing engine, which considers refinancings and additional data from the Mortgage Bankers Association, measured the 30-year conforming mortgage rate at 5.317% last week. Coming Up Clutch with J.R.
Dr. Matt Kritz | The Key Drivers of High Performance

Coming Up Clutch with J.R.

There's a foundational component to human performance that's not being talked about enough.  And it's preventing SO MANY people from unlocking their greatest capabilities and using their gifts and talents at the highest level possible. What about you? You feel like you have more in the tank?  If so, you'll want to lean in hard today. Because Dr. Matt Kritz BROUGHT IT… Dr. Matt is a Human Performance Specialist and the man behind New Zealand DOUBLING their Olympic medals earned. He leans right into the KEY DRIVERS to high performance and what MUST happen for you to unlock your best. Matt is BEYOND impressive and he has a take on human performance that's going to relieve a lot of your stress about getting out your best. J.R. and Matt talk about things like:  The fundamental characteristics that drive high performance What to do when you're in the proverbial “s*** or get off the pot” moment The mistake high achievers are making when they get feedback or information about how to achieve their goals And this is just a taste of what J.R. and Matt get into today. Matt is an absolute genius when it comes to human performance. [00:01 - 12:18] Introducing Dr. Matt to the Show  Dr. Matt's most embarrassing moment and how he overcame it Developing a stronger sense of self-efficacy and self-mastery [12:19 - 26:42] The Fundamental Characteristics That Drive High Performance #1: People thrive when the stresses they experience are within their capability and capacity If we don't understand THIS, it doesn't matter what program we're in MUST know WHO you are as an individual and, specifically your capabilities and capacities. IF not, the best program in the world won't work for you! Your FOUNDATIONS of what you're doing must be set FIRST. You have to understand what YOU need relative to your capabilities and capacity, then make sure you can deliver that EVERY DAY. THEN, AND ONLY THEN, can you start looking at making GAINS… #2: Pursue MARGINAL gains (1-2% gains) NOTE: The BIG ROCKS should be addressed first if you're operating at UNDER-capacity [26:43 - 33:41]  What To Do When You're In The Proverbial “S*** Or Get Off The Pot” Moment You have to know yourself first Who am I?  What do I know I can deliver?  What part of that satisfies what was asked of me?  What areas do I have NO idea about (i.e. necessary development)?  How do I prioritize that development?  How do I be open and honest and transparent about that (i.e. not being delusional or hiding behind something you can't do)? Too many people are not raising their hand and saying, “I don't know. I'm not sure. I need clarity here.” If you choose to hide behind the unknown, that's called HOPE Performance vs. High Performance There's no such thing as strengths and weaknesses…it's more about CONTEXT. You have to be AWARE of your environment and what's expected of you and understanding what your natural drivers are and how'd they'd land in that particular moment and environment [33:42 - 37:50] Mistake People Are Making With Feedback And Information They're Getting They feel like they have to take it at face value and implement it right away because that's what they have to do to be successful If you have the expectation that it's the TOP or bust, you'll often miss things along the way, compromise people along the way, and often not be true to yourself along the way If what you're trying to achieve is NOT within your IDENTITY, you'll compromise [37:51 - 54:19] Extra Nuggets from Dr. Matt Matt's take on the BE YOU movement There's NEVER a balance between work and life. It's about how well you can integrate the two. How to be content with the 1-2% gain [54:20 - 55:57] Wrapping Up!  Dr. Matt's BIG domino How to connect with Dr. Matt KEY QUOTES “High performance is transparent. Hope performance hides.” - Dr. Matt Kritz “There's no such thing as strengths and weaknesses. It's about being AWARE of your environment, what's expected of you, your natural drivers, and how those drivers will affect the particular moment and environment you're in.” - Dr. Matt Kritz “If what you're trying to achieve is NOT within your IDENTITY, you'll compromise. ” - Dr. Matt Kritz “There's NEVER a balance between work and life. It's about how well you can integrate the two.” - Dr. Matt Kritz “Anything worth achieving requires you to be uncomfortable.” - Dr. Matt Kritz CONNECT WITH DR.   Landaas & Company newsletter  May edition now available. Advisors on This Week's Show Kyle Tetting Art Rothschild Mike Hoelzl (with Max Hoelzl, engineered by Jason Scuglik) Week in Review (April 25-29) SIGNIFICANT ECONOMIC INDICATORS & REPORTS Monday No major releases Tuesday Manufacturing resumed its expansion in March, with durable goods orders rising 0.8% from February, according to the Commerce Department. Orders grew for the fifth time in six months following a 1.7% setback in February. Gains were led by a 5% rise in automotive orders and a 2.6% gain for computers and electronics. Aircraft orders declined. Excluding volatile transportation equipment, orders were up 1.1%. Since March 2021, all orders rose 12.6%, including 10.3% without transportation. Core capital goods orders, a proxy for business investment, rose 1% from February and were up 10.4% from March 2021. An imbalance between weak supply and strong demand continued to drive the year-to-year increase in residential prices in February, according to the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller home price index. The national index rose by 19.8%, behind only August and July last year as the highest in 35 years of data. All 20 cities in the composite index increased year-to-year gains from January. An analyst from S&P said he expects rising mortgage rates eventually to slow home price increases, which have been far outpacing overall inflation. The Commerce Department said the annual rate of new home sales declined 8.6% in March, the third dip in a row, falling to the slowest pace since November. As a result, the supply of houses for sale rose to the highest level since October. Cost of ownership continued to rise. The median sales price rose 21% from March 2021 to $436,700. New houses of $500,000 and higher accounted for 38% of all sales, vs. 22% the year before. The Conference Board said its consumer confidence index declined slightly in April with relatively high opinions on current conditions suggesting continued economic growth. The business research group said gas prices and the war in Ukraine did not appear to dampen expectations, which rose slightly but remained relatively low. Fears of inflation receded from a record high in March, and more consumers reported plans to buy big-ticket items like cars and appliances. Wednesday The National Association of Realtors said its index of pending home sales fell 1.2% in March, the fifth decline in a row. The trade group's index was down 8.2% from the year before, the 10th consecutive year-to-year decline. An economist for the association said higher mortgage rates were narrowing the pool of home buyers. He forecast a 9% drop in houses sold this year and projected annual price increases to decelerate to 8%. Thursday The U.S. economy sank at an annual pace of 1.4% in the first quarter, though on a full-year basis, inflation-adjusted gross domestic product was up 3.6%, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Real GDP was 2.8% above its pre-COVID peak at the end of 2019. Global supply issues slowed economic pace with declines in inventories and a record trade deficit. Consumer spending, which drives about two-thirds of economic activity, advanced at a 2.7% annual pace, led by spending on services. Year-to-year, adjusted for inflation, consumer spending rose 4.7%, down from 6.9% in the fourth quarter. The Federal Reserve Board's preferred measure of inflation rose 6.3% from the first quarter of 2021, more than triple the Fed's target pace. The four-week moving average for initial unemployment claims rose for the third week in a row after reaching an all-time low. New claims were 51% lower than the 55-year average, according to Labor Department data. In the latest week, 1.5 million Americans claimed jobless benefits, down 6.3% from the week before and down from 16.5 million the year before. Friday The Bureau of Economic Analysis said consumer spending rose 1.1% in March, exceeding a 0.
