GDP Script/ Top Stories for August 16th Publish Date: August 16th PRE-ROLL: MONSTER JAM From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Saturday, August 16th and Happy Birthday to Madonna I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by Gwinnett KIA Mall of Georgia. Archer student donating to needy gets big surprise from Amazon Gwinnett school tax rate going down, but property owners will still owe more Author Leigh Dunlap to discuss debut book 'Bless Your Heart' at Duluth library Plus, the Stripers report with pitcher Dane Dunning All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Archer student donating to needy gets big surprise from Amazon  Sometimes, it’s the smallest things that spark the biggest change. Nehemiah Hamilton, a senior at Archer High, used to dream of coding the next billion-dollar app. But after diving into community programs like Gwinnett’s Youth Commission and interning for Dacula’s mayor, his focus shifted. He didn’t just want to make millions—he wanted to help millions. So, he started “The Little Things,” a fundraiser to buy essentials low-income families often go without: detergent, toiletries, underwear, umbrellas. Especially umbrellas. Nehemiah set a modest goal—$500. Two weeks later, he’d raised over $2,000. Then, Amazon stepped in. After Gwinnett Chairwoman Nicole Love-Hendrickson shared his story on LinkedIn, Amazon’s Georgia community affairs lead, Terreta Rodgers, showed up with a truck. Literally. 3,600 items. Triple his donation. Nehemiah’s not stopping. He’s thinking about Morehouse, public service, maybe even running for office someday. But for now? He’s extending his fundraiser and calling on others to step up. STORY 2: Gwinnett school tax rate going down, but property owners will still owe more The Gwinnett County Board of Education voted Wednesday to lower the property tax rate by nearly half a mill—sounds like good news, right? Not so fast. Even with the drop to 20.15 mills, many property owners will still see higher tax bills, thanks to rising property values. Board Vice Chair Tarece Johnson-Morgan wasn’t thrilled, casting the lone “no” vote. Meanwhile, residents like Kay Vickers didn’t hold back. She slammed the board for firing two superintendents in four years (with pricey buyouts) and ignoring overcrowding at schools like Grayson High. The board’s decision followed three public hearings, but the tension? Far from over. STORY 3: Author Leigh Dunlap to discuss debut book 'Bless Your Heart' at Duluth library Mark your calendars: On Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 6:30 p.m., the Duluth Branch of the Gwinnett County Public Library will host Leigh Dunlap, author of the debut novel Bless Your Heart. The event, moderated by Iranian-American writer Samira Shakib-Bregeth, promises a lively discussion about family, reinvention, and the quirks of Southern hospitality—or lack thereof. Dunlap, best known for penning A Cinderella Story (yes, the one with Hilary Duff), brings her screenwriting chops to the page. She splits her time between South Carolina and South Kensington and has also written The Standoff and 16-Love. For details, visit gwinnettpl.org. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets 7 STRIPERS INTERVIEW Break 3: MONSTER JAM STORY 6: Three family members guilty of pandemic fraud A man from Pelham, Georgia, has been found guilty of wire fraud in a pandemic relief scam that roped in his family. Tyreek Brown, 28, now faces up to 30 years in prison, five years of supervised release, and a $1 million fine. Sentencing? TBD. His co-conspirators, Sherronica Jackson, 38, and Alan Brown, 52, both pleaded guilty and will be sentenced Nov. 12. Here’s the deal: Jackson snagged a $20,207 PPP loan in 2021, claiming a fake $97,000 income. She then helped Alan and Tyreek secure fraudulent loans for businesses that didn’t exist. Tyreek even sent her $3,000 after cashing in. STORY 7: Georgia unemployment rate down to 3.4% Georgia’s unemployment rate dipped to 3.4% last month, down just a tick from June’s 3.5%, according to the state Department of Labor. For context? That’s well below the national rate of 4.2%. But here’s the twist: while unemployment dropped, the state actually lost 500 jobs, leaving the total just shy of 5 million. Gains in health care (+2,800), manufacturing (+2,700), and construction (+2,100) couldn’t offset losses in food services (-4,500) and transportation (-1,400). Meanwhile, Georgia’s labor force grew slightly, with 732 more people joining in July. He sees a rotation out of financial assets and into companies that own hard assets, such as copper, silver, and gold miners, as well as natural gas equities. McDonald believes this shift is not about being bearish or bullish but about a "colossal rotation" in portfolio construction, driven in part by rising stagflationary forces.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist for Janney Montgomery Scott, says that with no one talking about recession these days, he says "it is the one thing the market is at risk of having happen right now" because the market isn't pricing in any potential downturn. Recession is not his base case, but he says there is an economic soft patch to get through that will take the economy to the edge of stall speed; he does think the market will get through that to finish the year higher, with the Standard & Poor's 500 moving hitting 6,600. Luschini thinks investors will want to ride that upturn well diversified, including allocations to international stocks — and particularly developed Europe — where he thinks valuations will help to keep this year's run-up rolling along. Joseph Schuster, chief executive officer at IPOX Schuster, says that the market for initial public offerings has been hot this year — a fund based on his landmark IPO index is up more than 30 percent year-to-date — and has some more solid names that are ready for their roll-out, including financial companies Bullish and Miami International Holdings, which make their debuts this week. Plus, with the S&P 500 having closed Tuesday above 6,400 for the first time, Chuck has a recommendation for how investors should be reacting to the news, and the move they should be making here with the market at highs.

Amanda Agati, chief investment officer at PNC Asset Management Group, says that with the purple haze of fiscal policy uncertainty and tariffs having lifted, the "pace of natural advancement" doesn't have a lot of room left in 2025, but after a slower grind into the end of the year, she thinks that 2026 "is shaping up to be an acceleration type of a year."  She expects broader stock market participation to help with that, though she says that breadth will extend to the 493 stocks that are in the Standard & Poor's 500 but not the Magnificent Seven, rather than to small caps. Agati also said that the international rally thus far this year is likely to slow significantly.  David Trainer of New Constructs put "unattractive asset managers" in the Danger Zone this week, and singled out Virtus Investment Partners as a prime example, saying it wasn't just that the money manager has a suite of mostly unattractive funds, but that its results as a stock could get ugly too. Ted Rossman, senior industry analyst at BankRate.com discusses the site's back-to-school shopping survey, which surprisingly showed that fewer Americans are saying that school shopping is putting pressure on their finances this year. One reason why is that shoppers say they have changed some of the ways they shop in response to higher inflation.  Plus, in the intro segment, Chuck discusses his experience with a warranty program — something he normally disdains and avoids — that started out looking ugly, but wound up with a happy ending.

This Day in Legal History: First SCOTUS DecisionOn August 11, 1792, the United States Supreme Court issued its first reported decision in Georgia v. Brailsford. The case arose from the complex aftermath of the Revolutionary War, when questions about debts owed to British creditors came before the new federal judiciary. The State of Georgia had enacted laws seizing debts owed to British subjects, while the 1783 Treaty of Paris required those debts to be honored. The dispute involved a British creditor, Samuel Brailsford, seeking repayment from a Georgia resident. Georgia argued that its confiscation laws extinguished the debt, but the Court was faced with balancing state statutes against treaty obligations. In its decision, the Court reaffirmed that treaties made under the authority of the United States were binding on the states, even when they conflicted with local laws. This early opinion helped cement the principle of federal supremacy in foreign affairs and treaty enforcement. It also demonstrated the Court's willingness to decide politically sensitive disputes involving state sovereignty. The ruling, authored before the modern opinion-writing style developed, was short and straightforward, focusing narrowly on the facts and legal issue. It set an early precedent for judicial interpretation of the Constitution's Supremacy Clause. Georgia v. Brailsford thus marked the Court's entry into shaping the balance between state power and federal authority. The case also foreshadowed the judiciary's role in resolving conflicts between domestic law and international agreements. While not as well-known as later landmark cases, its legacy lies in establishing the Court as a neutral arbiter in disputes implicating both constitutional structure and international commitments.President Donald Trump is expected to nominate David Rosner, a Democrat currently serving on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), as its next chair. The agency oversees decisions on natural gas export facilities and major power infrastructure, making it central to Trump's energy agenda. Rosner, appointed to FERC by President Joe Biden, previously worked for former Senator Joe Manchin, who was known for supporting coal and gas interests. White House officials say Rosner aligns with Trump's priorities, despite his party affiliation. FERC was a flashpoint during Trump's first term, when his appointees attempted—but failed—to push policies favoring fossil fuel power generation. Today, surging energy demand from data centers has renewed attention on expanding cheap power sources. In July, the country's largest electric grid saw record power auction revenues of $16.1 billion, highlighting the strain on supply. Rosner's promotion would follow the departure of Republican Mark Christie as chair, signaling a bipartisan leadership shift at the influential regulator.Trump to Tap Democrat to Lead US Agency Overseeing Gas, PowerA closely watched trial began today in San Francisco over President Trump's deployment of National Guard troops to assist immigration raids and manage protests in Los Angeles. California argues the move violates the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, which limits the use of the military in civilian law enforcement. The dispute centers on Trump's June order sending 700 Marines and 4,000 National Guard members to the city after mass immigration raids sparked unrest. State officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom, claim about 2,000 Guard members are still aiding U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in raids and restricting civilian movement. The administration denies the troops engaged in law enforcement, saying they were protecting federal property and ICE personnel. The three-day, non-jury trial before U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer could set limits on Trump's authority to deploy the military in U.S. cities. California is also seeking to regain control of its National Guard from federal command. A ruling against the administration could have lasting implications for the president's power to use military forces domestically.Landmark trial kicks off over Trump's use of US military in policing role | ReutersU.S. law firms saw stronger-than-expected business in the second quarter of 2025, with overall demand rising 1.6% from the same period last year and billing rates climbing 7.4%, according to the Thomson Reuters Institute. Clients sought legal guidance on shifting tariffs, regulatory changes, and an unsteady economy, partly fueled by President Trump's trade policies. The growth was uneven—top 100 firms experienced a 0.6% drop in demand, while the next-largest 100 grew 2.6% and midsized firms rose 3.5%, suggesting clients may be opting for lower-cost or more specialized services. Practice area results also varied: litigation demand rose 2%, corporate work 1.3%, mergers and acquisitions 0.3%, while intellectual property fell 1.4%. The industry's Financial Index score hit 55, up four points from Q1, but the report warned of risks ahead as overhead costs climb, collections dip, and productivity lags 1.3% year-over-year. Unpaid bills and write-downs could create further financial pressure if trends persist. Law firms stayed busy in second quarter but uncertainty looms - report | ReutersThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has moved to terminate its labor contract with the union representing 8,000 of its employees, according to the union's president. The action is part of President Trump's broader push to limit collective bargaining rights across federal agencies. Trump's March executive order seeks to remove such rights at more than 30 agencies, including the EPA, and is being challenged in court by unions that argue it violates free speech and bargaining obligations. The EPA says it is acting in compliance with the order, which would make it easier for agencies to discipline or dismiss workers. The move comes as the EPA plans to reduce its workforce by at least 23% and close its scientific research office as part of broader federal downsizing. Unions, including the American Federation of Government Employees, are suing to stop the effort, but a recent federal appeals court decision allowed the administration to proceed with exempting some agencies from negotiating with unions. He explores how this unaddressed grief drove him to seek validation and success in his career, eventually leading to burnout and an epiphany that brought him to therapy. Through the support of his therapist, he confronted his grief by writing a letter to his deceased father and releasing it into the sea. Trig emphasizes the importance of addressing unresolved grief and offers six key principles for achieving meaningful success: passion, progress over perfection, promotion and meaning, leveraging existing resources (parlay), taking action, and philanthropy. He invites listeners to join him on this journey of progress and self-discovery, offering a potential digital tool to aid in this process.

Allegations by Donald Trump: Former President Donald Trump is quoted calling for an investigation into Nancy Pelosi, accusing her of using insider information to amass wealth through stock trading. He claims Pelosi has achieved returns “practically in the history of Wall Street” and suggests this is due to her access to non-public information. Financial Discrepancies Highlighted: Pelosi’s government salary is cited as $174,000/year, yet her net worth is reported to have grown from $114.7 million in 2018 to potentially $413 million by 2024. The file references sources like OpenSecrets, Investopedia, and The Times to support these figures. Paul Pelosi reportedly earned between $7.8 million and $42.5 million in 2024 from stock trades. Stock Performance: The Pelosi portfolio allegedly returned 54% in 2024, outperforming the S&P 500’s 25% gain. Notable trades included early investments in Nvidia and Palo Alto Networks, and timely sales of Microsoft and Visa. Pelosi’s Response: In a CNN interview with Jake Tapper, Pelosi deflects the insider trading question, emphasizing her focus on the 60th anniversary of Medicaid. She denies wrongdoing, stating: “I’m not into it. My husband is,” and accuses Trump of “projecting.” Please Hit Subscribe to this podcast Right Now.
