Navigating the magnificent scale of South Asian weddings demands more than standard planning approaches—it requires masterful team leadership. In this compelling episode, Certified Wedding Planner and Educator Rima Shah of Big Guava Events joins Krisy Thomas, COO of the CWP Society, to share battle-tested strategies for building, preparing, and leading teams through multi-day celebrations with hundreds of guests.Rima reveals why finding the right team members is her first priority, seeking out Certified Wedding Planners whose foundation of knowledge provides an essential "security blanket" when executing complex events. She emphasizes matching team size to wedding scale, noting that a 400-person celebration across multiple spaces simply cannot be managed by a skeleton crew without sacrificing quality. The conversation delves into Rima's meticulous communication protocols, from comprehensive Google Docs shared a week before the wedding to on-site walkthroughs that orient team members to each space and responsibility. For those new to South Asian traditions, she describes her approach to cultural education, ensuring assistants understand not just what happens during ceremonies like Baraat or Hindu rituals, but why these moments matter—allowing them to anticipate needs and recognize significant transitions. With remarkable candor, Rima shares a challenging leadership moment involving an assistant who crossed professional boundaries at a destination wedding, highlighting the importance of swift decision-making to protect your reputation and client experience. Her powerful closing advice—"Don't be scared to ask for help"—reminds planners that delegation is strength, not weakness, and that trusting your team to handle more than you might initially believe can be the difference between merely surviving and truly thriving in the world of complex cultural celebrations.Whether you're specifically interested in South Asian weddings or simply want to strengthen your team management approach for any large-scale celebration, this episode offers practical wisdom from someone who's mastered the art of leading with intention. Last week, my guest was Oscar Arias, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former President of Costa Rica, who brought peace to Central America. This week, I continue to prove that Chatter That Matters has no boundaries, only journeys of those who overcome, who chase, who change their world and ours for the better. My guest is Rima Berns-McGowan, a woman who has devoted her life to making the world a better place. She has walked many paths—scholar, author, community builder, politician and then made one of the most unexpected and courageous pivots imaginable: leaving politics to become a Medium connecting those who live here with those who have departed. What ties it all together is her conviction in tikkun olam, a jewish concept meaning reapir of the world. Whether through evidence-based research, community activism, or channelling messages of love and healing from those who've passed, Rima's life is devoted to building inclusion, belonging, and hope. In this conversation, we explore: How her family's escape from apartheid South Africa shaped her identity and lifelong quest for justice. The lessons she's learned from academia, politics, and the people she's served. Why she believes our ancestors never leave us, and how as a Medium she can help bring messages from the other side that brings healing and forgiveness. What her journey teaches us about choosing good over cynicism, compassion over division, and possibility over despair. Suspend disbelief. Open your heart and listen to the many wonderful messages from Rima Berns-McGown, the Medium. Presented by RBC, because they believe in stories of human possibility. E aiiiiiii Diooooovens!!

Finalist, Award for Excellence in the Study of Religion, Constructive-Reflective Studies, given by the American Academy of ReligionExplores how Black Buddhist Teachers and Practitioners interpret Western Buddhism in unique spiritual and communal waysIn Black Buddhists and the Black Radical Tradition: The Practice of Stillness in the Movement for Liberation (NYU Press, 2022), Rima Vesely-Flad examines the distinctive features of Black-identifying Buddhist practitioners, arguing that Black Buddhists interpret Buddhist teachings in ways that are congruent with Black radical thought. Indeed, the volume makes the case that given their experiences with racism—both in the larger society and also within largely white-oriented Buddhist organizations—Black cultural frameworks are necessary for illuminating the Buddha's wisdom.Drawing on interviews with forty Black Buddhist teachers and practitioners, Vesely-Flad argues that Buddhist teachings, through their focus on healing intergenerational trauma, provide a vitally important foundation for achieving Black liberation. She shows that Buddhist teachings as practiced by Black Americans emphasize different aspects of the religion than do those in white convert Buddhist communities, focusing more on devotional practices to ancestors and community uplift. The book includes discussions of the Black Power movement, the Black feminist movement, and the Black prophetic tradition. It also offers a nuanced discussion of how the Black body, which has historically been reviled, is claimed as a vehicle for liberation. In so doing, the book explores how the experiences of non-binary, gender non-conforming, and transgender practitioners of African descent are validated within the tradition. The book also uplifts the voices of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer Black Buddhists. This unique volume shows the importance of Black Buddhist teachers' insights into Buddhist wisdom, and how they align Buddhism with Black radical teachings, helping to pull Buddhism away from dominant white cultural norms.
