Last year we met Brie Ripley, a young newly married Seattlite who had moved to Rome for a job without ever having visited the city, or even the country. On this episode, we catch up with her and husband 10 months later to see how they are adjusting to life in Rome and life as expats, now that the expat honeymoon phase is over and they are faced with the real challenges of living abroad. We talk about their struggles to learn the language, their attempts to create a community, and how hard it can be to live in a foreign country when you don't particularly embrace trying new things. Thet both weign in on what it feels like to be the so-called "trailing spouse" vs. the (for lack of a better term) "leading spouse," how living in a foreign country has changed how they interact as a couple, and whether either of them would have moved to Rome if they had been single at the time (spoiler: their answers are very different from each other!) Would you move across the world to a country without ever having been there? That's what this week's guest did. We sit down with Brie Ripley to talk about her decision to take a 4-year contract with the World Food Program, which meant a relocation to Rome—a city she had never even visited.  She talks about the challenges of adjusting to life abroad as a brand-new expat, struggling to speak the language, searching for an apartment, missing her new husband who will be joining her soon, and quickly acquiring an unquenchable dependence on espresso. She also talks about what it was like to move her cats here, and how that came with its own set of challenges. ------------------------------------- ADVERTISE WITH US: Reach expats, future expats, and travelers all over the world. In the midst of such chaos it has become clear that Waste Division needs to activate its news function. Thankfully, Waste correspondent Phillip Griffin is on the case. He got his close friend Brie Ripley on the phone to discuss her circumstances in Seattle, WA, a hotspot of the COVID-19 virus in the U.S. Thanks to Brie for taking time to talk to us! We MUST MAKE CLEAR: we are not like other news providers. We provide scappy, raw journalism that you need to critically think about. We do not claim to be experts. We are interested in reporting on-the-ground experiences of normal people--make of it what you will. Do your own research and analysis to decide what is best for you. Google is useful sometimes, tho evil for sure. BUT HERE ARE OUR PRACTICAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR COVID-19 BASED ON THE BEST INFO WE HAVE: -STAY INSIDE -DON'T INTERACT WITH THE ELDERLY/INFIRM EVEN IF YOU'RE NOT SHOWING SYMPTOMS -WORRY LESS ABOUT YOUR JOB AND MORE ABOUT YOUR PEOPLE. RENT & MORTGAGE WILL LIKELY BE SUSPENDED FOR SOME PERIOD. For more updates (or arty distractions!) check out waste-division.org, and follow @philthyg6 on instagram for obsessive analysis on COVID-19. Our team is hard at work on Season Two, which drops fall 2019, but in the meantime we wanted to answer a question a lot of people ask us: Why are we making this podcast? Why make a podcast about solutions to the opioid epidemic? On this bonus episode, we bring you excerpts from interviews producers and co-hosts Anna Boiko-Weyrauch and Kye Norris did in October 2018 at KUOW with producer, Brie Ripley.
