Where did Lord Byron and Percy Shelley come to sip coffee while they jotted down their verses? Where did Bizet and Berlioz go to discuss their work? Where could Casanova be found trying to pick up girls? Caffè Greco, where else? Having opened in 1760, Antico Caffè Greco is the oldest café in Rome and the second-oldest in all of Italy! And you can still go there and sit where Hawthorne, Ibsen, Gogol, Goethe, Canova, and many many other literary, art, and musical greats rubbed elbows and drank coffee. On this episode, we visit the famous café, grab some espresso ourselves, and discuss what it feels like to drink coffee in the same place so many brilliant thinkers over the generations did the same.   Hear this episode transformed into a bedtime story by Sleep With Me podcast's Drew Ackerman (aka Dear Scooter).   If you'd like to learn more about Literary Rome, download Tiffany's VoiceMap audio tour Rome for Readers, a self-guided walking tour that takes you past the residences of the most famous foreign writers who visited and lived in Rome.   ***Katy's sister Dana has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 agressive brain cancer. This week, we explore the underground world with Robert MacFarlane of Cambridge University in England. Robert is the best-selling author of Landmarks and The Old Ways, and was awarded the EM Forster Prize for Literature by the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His latest book, UNDERLAND, is an “epic exploration of the Earth's underworlds as they exist in myth, literature, memory, and the land itself.” The book also details the three major things that humans do with or in the underground world. You'll have to listen to the interview (or read the book!) to find out what they are. Katy and Robert discuss fascinating yet obscure concepts like deep-time, and how instead of making our lives seem insignificant, this concept can inspire us to live every second more fully. Robert also points out how important it is to keep cognizant of our ignorance, and never stop exploring and learning, and how spending so much time underground has taught him how much he loves the light and the living. Listen all the way to the end to find out the very scariest underground experience MacFarlane ever had. ***The Bittersweet Life podcast has been on the air for an impressive 10+ years! Who remembers what life felt like during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, when cities and entire countries were shutting down right and left? Believe it or not, it all started five years ago this month! So we are digging back into our archives to bring you episodes from that momentous time all month long. On this episode, which originally aired on April 5th 2020, we ask our listeners: What does a day in the life of someone under lockdown look like? And they responded, offering a peek into their lives throughout the course of a day. We also offer our own.  From Lynn in San Francisco as she studies Italian to Scott trying to find some space for himself in his basement, from Madeline in Menlo Park remembering to be thankful to best-selling author Jess Walter who is very used to working from home. From Nancy in Wisconsin dealing with spring snowfall to Theresa in Port Townsend in a hailstorm to Jill in Manhattan, where the only sound on the city streets is the chirping of birds, and many, many others. We got so many glimpses into the lives of our diverse listeners that we had to divide this episode into two parts. But don't fret—the second part is available here. ***The Bittersweet Life podcast has been on the air for an impressive 10+ years! There was no going out except for basic necessities or medical reasons—or work if you had an essential job that could not be done from home. How was Tiffany coping? How was she staying sane, keeping her four-year-old entertained, and resisting tearing her husband limb from limb? And while Tiffany was living through that unprecedented time in Italy, Katy reported on how Seattle was responding to the rapid spread of coronavirus in Washington State and the rest of the US. Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy We're getting deeper into our exploration of popular American TV with Christian themes, now scraping into this seemingly forgotten spinoff series of TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL, also created by TBAA executive producer Martha Williamson. PROMISED LAND launched with a “backdoor pilot” in the third season of TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL where audiences met their new favorite family: the Greenes (Dad Russell, mom Claire, son Josh, daughter Dinah, mother Hattie, and roguish redheaded nephew Nathaniel.) Recently homeless, the family decides to nomadically drive their trailer around America after being told by an angel that their purpose is to help others. The American promise is a major theme of PROMISED LAND, leaning more heavily into an explicit endorsement of American values than TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL ever does. In fact, pilot episode “The Expatriate” centers around the Greene family helping a man who is moving from America to New Zealand after suffering a spinal injury from gun violence. It seems reasonable that a man who suffered a traumatic injury might want a change of scenery, but the Greenes (and thereby the logic of the show's writers) seem to think it's a sin to abandon America. It's “ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country” taken to an extreme and delusional degree, with the Greenes adding value to America by inflicting themselves on average people's lives who hold reasonable opinions. To get a broader sense of the vibe of PROMISED LAND, we also watch a late series episode where the show has completely abandoned the trailer-roaming angle of the show and the Greenes have settled down in Denver, CO. In the episode “What's in a Word?” Nathaniel overhears cool black teenagers saying the “soft ‘a' n-word” among themselves and, innocently not understanding the racial context, repeats this word to his own black friend in school the next day. This causes a massive stir within his community and ignites a conversation, poorly handled by the show's writers, about racial dynamics in America. The conclusion? America is the greatest country on earth, no matter the cost. [THE BITTERSWEET PAST] How Traveling Makes You Rude

The Bittersweet Life

Have you ever walked into someone's house in Japan with your shoes on and had a room full of people laugh at you? (Katy has.) Have you ever traipsed into a room in an Italian home that has been freshly mopped and been given the evil eye by the lady of the house? (Tiffany has.) Part of living in a foreign culture is learning (often the hard way) that some things that are totally acceptable back home are, at best, a faux pas in your adopted country, and, at worst, a humiliating gaff. Picking up on the social rules of your new country is part of adjusting to life abroad. Inevitably, all expats will go through it. But what makes things rude in one culture and acceptable in another? What does it say about the people of those countries, and what they value? Why is it ok to litter on the street in Italy, but not ok to wash your hands in the kitchen sink? Why is it fine, in Italy, to wave to get your waiter's attention, but unspeakably rude to leave a shop without saying “grazie, arrivederci”—the exact opposite of which is true in the US? And what happens when you pick up habits that are perfectly acceptable in your new country, and take them back home with you, where they are seen as downright rude? (Case in point: after a one-year stint in Rome, polite, mild-mannered Katy has taken to cutting lines, a heinous crime in America and merely an eye-rolling annoyance in Italy.) We discuss these social conundrums and etiquette paradoxes and try to make sense of it all on this episode from our archives. ***The Bittersweet life podcast has been on the air for an impressive 10+ years! Want to raise a bilingual child? Whether you are an expat or not, in a mixed-culture relationship or not, it is possible to raise your child in two (or more) languages, and the benefits you will pass on to your child are significant. But how do you go about it? On this episode from our archives, we sit down with British mum Kristie Prada, author and creator of the blog Mamma Prada. She and her Italian husband live in the UK and are serious about raising their children to speak both languages flawlessly. In her effort to do just that, she has become an expert on childhood bilingualism, and shares that knowledge onto her blog. On this episode, Kristie shares her favorite resources for raising children in two languages, the most interesting of which is double-language book series by One Third Stories. She also shares the brilliant idea of teaching your child about the other country and its culture as a way of piquing his or her interest in the language (instead of the other way around), and offers tips and tricks for staying strong when your older child resists the minority language. If bilingualism is something you want for your child, this is the episode for you! This episode also features a bonus appearance by none other than Tiffany's son Aurelio, who offers a peek into the mind of a bilingual toddler, and answers Katy's hard-hitting questions, such as, “What does a cow say?” ***The Bittersweet Life podcast has been on the air for an impressive 10+ years! “You fall in love with Rome very slowly, a little at a time—but for all your life.” Nikolaj Gogol sums up so perfectly what many people experience when viisting Rome. The city can be so overwhelming, so daunting, that many people aren't able to fully experience it on their first visit, or even their first few visits. And yet, it's a city that has captivated and fascinated people—perhaps beyond any other city—for centuries if not millennia, and it continues to do so to this day. So what is it about Rome? What is it that pulls people here, over and over and over? What is it that  brings people back year after year? Tiffany and Katy try to put their finger on why so many people fall helplessly in love with Rome (either little by little or suddenly), and why one of Rome's most impressive qualities is its resilence. It's a city that has been burned, flooded, sacked, and destroyed countless times. Yet like a phoenix, it emerges from the ashes somehow better than it was before.  ------------------------------------- ADVERTISE WITH US: Reach expats, future expats, and travelers all over the world. Tomorrow is presidential election day in the US! (Cue the angst-ridden gnashing of teeth.) If you're so worried about the results of the election that you are considering fleeing the country if your side doesn't win, consider this first: The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence. Countries like Italy, with its year-round sunshine, amazing food, and infamous "dolce far niente" lifestyle, can feel awfully tempting when things in your home country aren't going your way. But is life really better over here? Tiffany takes off the rose-colored glasses for a moment to rant about how stressful and frustrating Italian life has been for her lately. Just so you don't quit your job and move to Italy and say we didn't warn you!  Admittedly, this episode is a light-hearted take on what is in fact a serious subject that we may decide to tackle in its entirety in a future episode. In this episode, Jack Russo dives into a conversation with Bob Acker, who offers a unique perspective as an American expatriate living in Laos. They explore how the U.S. election is viewed from abroad, with Bob expressing concerns about the political climate and rising polarization. From his vantage point, the media's heavy focus on Trump—five times more coverage than Kamala Harris—has shaped global perceptions, making Trump a polarizing figure even overseas. Bob shares doubts about Kamala Harris's effectiveness in the current administration, while Jack questions the future leadership of the Democratic party. From his perspective abroad, Bob sees the media's overwhelming focus on Trump shaping global perceptions, making him a polarizing figure even among expatriates. They also reflect on the stark political divide between rural and urban America, which seems more pronounced when viewed from an international lens. Both express concerns about the Republican party's radicalization and how it could lead to further instability, leaving many expats like Bob questioning the future of the U.S. Tune in for an insightful take on U.S. politics from abroad!   Jack Russo Managing Partner Jrusso@computerlaw.com www.computerlaw.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/jackrusso "Every Entrepreneur Imagines a Better World"®️
