Just six months, three days, and 1200 miles removed from the infamous UFO crash at Roswell, New Mexico, on January 7th, 1948, something tragic happened in the skies over Franklin County, Kentucky, that would change the face of UFOlogy forever. At 2:30 in the afternoon, After repeated and coinciding reports around the region of a massive, white, circular object overhead, Twenty five year old Kentucky air national guardsman, Thomas F. Mantell, was dispatched to observe the unknown craft and report back to Godman Army Airfield, at Fort Knox. Around 3:15, Captain Mantell’s P-15 Mustang would come crashing down, into the Franklin County bluegrass below, ending the pilot’s life. What happened over the course of less than an hour on that January day, early in 1948, would redefine the golden age of the flying saucer phenomena and introduce a terrifying element of danger into the mystery that had come before. The very first casualty by an Air National Guardsmen took place just after World War II in Kentucky when Captain Thomas Mantell crashed while chasing an unidentified flying object. UFO stories usually center on aliens or the supernatural, but the basic fact of the crash that killed Captain Mantell is a reflection of real world anxieties and priorities. The object he was chasing was described initially as an odd disk, but when he and three other pilots flying P-51s began following it, they realized it was gaining altitude. Mantell was the only pilot who decided to chase it all the way, which is when he blacked out and his plane went into a tailspin. Mantell's death made the story an official government problem, as well as reflecting the basic facts of living in the new culture of the Cold War.

On January 7, 1948, the Kentucky Air National Guard ordered four planes to approach an unidentified flying object. Among the four pilots was Captain Thomas F. Mantell, an experienced, highly decorated WWII pilot. Over the next hour, the pilots would attempt to chase the object until they each began to turn back due to low fuel or lack of oxygen. All, except Captain Mantell. When his plane crashed to the earth, Mantell would become the first known casualty in history attributed to a UFO. Exactly what did those pilots see in the sky that day?
