While many people believe the description was originally made by Kenneth Arnold in 1947 when describing the nine objects he saw flying over Mount Rainier in Washington, it actually occurred in 1878. The Dallas Herald, on Jan. 25, 1878, ran an article about a saucer-shaped craft seen flying through the sky by Denison, Texas farmer John Martin on Jan. 22, 1878. Also, the 1973 Falkville, Alabama "Metal Man" is discussed. Young Police Chief Jeff Greenhaw responded to a report of a flying saucer on Oct. 17, 1973, and when he arrived on the scene, he saw and photographed an apparent robot standing on the road. The robot eventually fled into a field, and Greenhaw gave chase, only to run his police car into a ditch. SOCIAL MEDIA is abuzz! Not with NCAA basketball—with the JFK conspiracy archives and the alleged discovery of “a vast underground city” beneath the pyramids at Giza. It's really not that exciting. First, a conspiracy powerful enough to take down an American president, especially if it involved the intelligence community (CIA, NSA, etc.), isn't likely to be incompetent enough to leave a paper trail—especially with more than 60 years to scrub the files. So far, there doesn't appear to be anything new in the files released this week in response to President Trump's executive order. The claim that the files prove that Israel was involved in the plot is based on bias confirmation and poor reading comprehension. To summarize, it made no sense for Israel to replace a Massachusetts liberal with a Texan backed by Big Oil, which made lots of money dealing with Israel's oil-rich Arab enemies. LBJ was less a friend to Israel than JFK. However, there are plenty of odd and mysterious links between the JFK plot and the UFO/UAP phenomenon. The earliest UFO flaps—the Maury Island incident and the Kenneth Arnold sighting in the Pacific Northwest—were investigated by FBI agent Guy Banister, who later turned up in New Orleans as a private detective with an office in the same building as Lee Harvey Oswald's branch of the Fair Play for Cuba Committee. We also discuss The Nine and its odd connections to the JFK conspiracy, the CIA, several old money families, Israeli psychic Uri Geller, and Star Trek. An animator and storyteller, is best known for Fred Crisman: Cave of the Space Nazis, a short film inspired by fan letters sent to Amazing Stories in the 1940s, during the height of the Shaver Mystery. He has interviewed the family of controversial UFO figure Fred Crisman and collaborated with Pacific Northwest historians to adapt Crisman and Shaver's extraordinary lives into an upcoming tongue-in-cheek serialized audio drama. My guest for this episode is Greg Eghigian, who joined me to talk about his new book After the Flying Saucers Came: A Global History of the UFO Phenomenon. Greg is a Professor of History and Bioethics at Pennsylvania State University. An expert on the history of the abnormal and the paranormal in the modern world, his research has been supported by NASA and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. After the Flying Saucers Came begins with the 1947 Kenneth Arnold incident near Mount Rainier in Washington State and traces how that incident sparked an international drama involving shady figures, questionable evidence, suspicions of conspiracy, hoaxes, new religions, scandals, unsettling alien encounters, debunkers, and celebrities. It examines how descriptions, theories, and debates about unidentified flying objects and alien abduction changed over time and how they appeared in the United States, Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Russia. It also explores the impact UFOs have had on our understanding of space, science, technology, and ourselves up through the present day. In the interview I start off by talking with Greg about his background and what drew him to write a book on the subject of UFOs. We talk about Kenneth Arnold's sighting, and the remarkable way that the term ‘Flying Saucer' helped launch Ufology as the latest incarnation of humanity's fascincation with visitors from the stars. Later on we discuss the way the book looks at the subject matter from a cultural context and talk further about how that viewpoint can help us to understand the human experience and meaning of encounters not just with UFO's, but otherworldly, strange phenomenon in general. Chehalis, the county seat of Lewis County in Washington State, is a city that celebrates both UFOs and Bigfoot. For the 75th anniversary of Kenneth Arnold's sighting over Mt. Rainier (120 miles east) on June 24, 1947, Arnold's granddaughter, Shanelle Shanz, was among a group of speakers at the Chehalis City Farm during the annual “Flying Saucer Party,” which includes exhibits at and benefits the Lewis County Historical Museum. An event centered around Bigfoot, “Bigfoot: Real or Hoax?” was held on April 15, 2023, at Mcfiler's Chehalis Theatre with presentations sponsored by the Historical Museum. Even before people started calling large, cryptic, woods-dwelling, hairy humanoids “Bigfoot,” there was an early report of “Sasquatch” terrorizing residents of the Chehalis Reservation (22 miles northwest of the city) in the March 2, 1934, edition of The Province from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. With such deep roots in UFOs and Bigfoot, it's fitting that there should be a case in the area involving both. His doctoral dissertation was titled “Flying Saucer Culture: An Historical Survey of American UFO Belief.” During this episode, he'll talk about his upcoming documentary, "The Man Who Invented Flying Saucers," about Raymond A. Palmer, notorious for introducing the legendary Shaver Mystery to the readers of Amazing Stories, the sci-fi magazine he edited. Bertram will reveal how the flying saucers were first discussed in that magazine, and expanded upon in Fate magazine, a pulp magazine Palmer co-founded and edited. The dark history of the UFO field, beginning with Men In Black, was chronicled by Palmer and the "original" flying saucer witness, Kenneth Arnold, in their book, "The Coming of Saucers." Bertram is also a filmmaker and film festival programmer. Over 75 years after the modern UFO era began, Bertram, an Australian expatriate and UFO historian, found himself living in central Wisconsin: In a neighboring county to the one Palmer called home, and just a short, back-road, commute to the rural property where Palmer ran his UFO publishing company. My special guest tonight is Ali Saidatan who's here to discuss the alien-hybrids that are being created to replace the human race in secret. Abductions in History: While "alien abduction" did not achieve widespread attention until the 1960s, many similar stories are known to have been circulating decades earlier. These early abduction-like accounts have been dubbed "paleo-abductions" by UFO researcher Jerome Clark.[3] This same two-part article ([4] and [3]) makes note of many paleo-abductions, some of which were reported well before the 1957 Antonio Villas Boas case earned much attention, or even before the UFO report claimed in 1947 by pilot Kenneth Arnold that first generated widespread interest in UFOs: At least one case of attempted abduction was reported in conjunction with the mystery airships of the late 19th century. Colonel H. G. Shaw's account was published in the Stockton, California Daily Mail in 1897: Shaw claimed that he and a friend were harassed by three tall, slender humanoids whose bodies were covered with a fine, downy hair. The beings tried to accost or kidnap Shaw and his friend, who were able to fight them off.[4] In his book New Lands (1923), American writer Charles Fort speculated that extraterrestrial beings might have kidnapped humans: "One supposes that if extra-mundane vessels have sometimes come close to this earth, then sailing away, terrestrial aëronauts may have occasionally left this earth, or may have been seized and carried away from this earth."[5] The 1951 case of Fred Reagan was publicized by Flying Saucer Review in the late 1960s based on news clippings from 1952. Reagan claimed to have been piloting his small airplane, which was struck by a UFO; the occupants (who resembled metallic stalks of asparagus) apologized, and tried to cure Reagan's cancer. Reagan reportedly died of a brain disorder not long after the alleged UFO encounter.[6][unreliable source?] In 1954, Paris Match printed a story said to have occurred in 1921, when the anonymous writer was a child. The writer claimed to have been snatched by two tall "men" who wore helmets and "diving suits", who took the boy to an "oddly shaped tank" before being released. Rogerson calls this story "the earliest known abduction survivor report".[2] A 1958 letter to NICAP asserted that two U.S. Army soldiers witnessed two bright red lights near their base. The soldiers had a strange sense of dissociation, and found themselves in a new location, with no memory of how they arrived there.[citation needed] Rogerson writes that the publication of Harold T. Wilkins's Flying Saucers Uncensored (1955) declared that two contactees (Karl Hunrath and Wilbur Wilkinson) had disappeared under mysterious circumstances; Wilkins reported speculation that the duo were the victims of "alleged abduction by flying saucers".[2] The so-called Shaver Mystery of the 1940s has some similarities to later abduction accounts, as well, with sinister beings said to be kidnapping and torturing people. Steve Ward has been fascinated by the unexplained for over half a century. There were two major events that inspired his interest in the unexplained.Growing up in Michigan, the March 1966 UFO flap occurred virtually in his backyard. The following November a winged humanoid chased two couples down a lonely country road near Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
On June 24th, 1947, a private pilot and fire suppression equipment manufacturer named Kenneth Arnold was flying south of Mount Rainier, bound for Yakima, Washington. At about 3 PM he saw a flash of light in the air to the north of the mountain, and subsequently he saw a long chain of flying objects passing in front of the mountain. He described them as having convex shapes, and this was soon changed to the term “flying saucer". Arnold's was in fact not the first UFO sighting following the Second World War; nor was it even part of the first wave of sightings of strange things in the sky. Yet something unprecedented did happen after 1947, not only in the United States, but around the world–not necessarily involving aliens, but very much involving humans. As Greg Egighian observes in his new book After the Flying Saucers Came: A Global History of the UFO Phenomenon, UFO sightings “have made people wonder, fret, question, probe, and argue. In that regard, they have revealed more about human beings than about alien worlds. And that is a story worth investigating.” Greg Eghigian is a Professor of History and Bioethics at Pennsylvania State University. A 2022 Netflix film called White Noise, about a train carrying toxic chemicals derailing in a small Ohio town, was brought to life when on February 3, 2023, a train carrying toxic chemicals derailed in the same town, East Palestine, Ohio, which was used for filming the movie crash.Some may remember the United Airlines engine that fell onto a neighborhood in Colorado back in February 20, 2021, almost twenty years to the date of the release of Donnie Darko on January 19, 2001. The movie Independence Day, released July 3, 1996, also seemed to predict the appearance of a city-sized UFO, which manifested in Phoenix as the infamous ‘Phoenix Lights' on March 13, 1997. Now with UFOs being shot down in Deadhorse, Alaska, Yukon, Canada, and over Lake Huron, and another detected in Montana, we are learning that at least one of them had “strings hanging off” of it like Jordan Peele's monster-UFO in the movie Nope which was released on July 22, 2022. The Lake Huron UFO was taken down on February 11, 2023. Such a craft reminds us of the 1956 White Sands story of AF sergeant Jonathan P. Lovette who was seen by Major William Cunningham being picked up by some kind of serpentine arm dangling from a silver disc.This all has to mean something. It also reminds us of Kenneth Arnold, who on June 24, 1947, witnessed several aircraft near Mount Rainier that he later described as flying “like a saucer would if you skipped it across the water." Kenneth Arnold was soon asked to investigate the June 21, 1947, Maury Island Incident in Washington State. Both cases took place weeks before the July 7-8, 1947, Roswell incident, of which it was famously reported that the Army Air Force “Captures Flying Saucer.” Before Arnold most UFO reports were of ghost rockets, foo fighters, and cigar-shaped craft by both the military and civilians. Just weeks after his sighting, however, a flying saucer supposedly crashed in Roswell as part of a series of additional crashes. That debris was, of course, called a weather balloon to take our attention away from questioning otherworld origins, and now 75 years later after a spy balloon was shot down of the coast of South Carolina there is renewed interest in the sky, which has resulted in numerous UFOs being detected and shot down. Tan solo unos minutos después, hace una llamada a control de Boston. Dice que a menos de 1 km, hay un Objeto Volador que no sabe identificar.
