People turning 65 have a lot of important decisions to make. Do they apply for Social Security, or do they wait until they're older? When do they apply for Medicare, what are the differences between A, B, C, and D, and which ones are right for them? To answer these questions, I talked with Retirement Management Advisor Marcia Mantell to provide some guidance to those having to make those decisions. In this episode you will learn: When to start the Social Security and Medicare application process — and why missing the window can cost you The most common and costly mistakes people make when applying, and how to avoid them How to decide when to claim Social Security, including the real trade-offs between claiming early and waiting How Medicare enrollment works — Parts A, B, C, and D — and what the timeline actually looks like What happens if you miss a Medicare deadline, and whether the penalties are as serious as people fear How Social Security works for married couples and what strategies exist to maximize lifetime benefits for both spouses What to do if you've already claimed and wonder if you made the wrong call

Show Highlights · A sit-down conversation with Dr. Michael Mantell- renowned and esteemed mental health architect and prolific author · How we disturb and upset ourselves · The key thoughts we use to sweat the small stuff · Self-rating is harmful · Stress… its negative impact on our lives SUMMARY: We often disturb and upset ourselves not because of events themselves, but because of the way we think about them. When we “sweat the small stuff,” it is usually driven by key thoughts such as demanding perfection, assuming minor problems are catastrophic, or believing that mistakes define our worth. This leads to harmful self-rating, where we judge our entire value as a person based on single outcomes or flaws rather than viewing ourselves as complex and constantly developing individuals. These patterns of thinking fuel stress, which can negatively impact our mental focus, emotional well-being, relationships, and even physical health. By recognizing and challenging these unhelpful thoughts, we can reduce unnecessary stress and respond to life’s challenges in a healthier, more balanced way. The film explores the 1948 death of Captain Thomas Mantell, a decorated pilot who died while chasing a mysterious object over Kentucky. Seth shares what drew him to the story, why it remains an overlooked case in UFO history, and how it connects to the broader conversation about secrecy, heroism, and unexplained aerial encounters. In January 1948, Kentucky Air National Guard pilot Captain Thomas Mantell died while pursuing an unidentified flying object near Fort Knox, after his P-51 Mustang went into a fatal climb. The U.S. Air Force later suggested he had been chasing a high-altitude Skyhook balloon, but many still regard the Mantell incident as one of the first major UFO cases of the modern era. This week on The Micah Hanks Program, we are joined by filmmaker Seth Breedlove, whose forthcoming documentary Lost Contact: UFOs After Wartime revisits one of the earliest controversies in the study of UFOs, involving the fatal plane crash that claimed the life of pilot Thomas Mantell in 1948. What does a fresh look at eyewitness testimony reveal about this classic of post-war ufology? Have you had a UFO/UAP sighting? Part two of our week of ghosts is all about one spirit – this time, a poltergeist. People have been arguing over this one since the 1660s, including some prominent skeptics and supporters. This is the story of an aircraft crash in January of 1956 that tragically ended the life of a military pilot. But the mystery behind the crash is strikingly similar to that of the famous Mantell UFO case.

Michael explains the ways donors can engage in funder collaboration for maximum impact. Episode Highlights:Pooling funds with other donors. How to fund effective campaigns. What to expect when there is a transition in leadership with the nonprofit organization you're funding. Michael Mantell Bio:Michael Mantell founded Resources Legacy Fund (RLF) and Resources Law Group (RLG) in 2000 to expand the work he had begun in partnership with the Packard Foundation and as a consulting lawyer in the late 1990s. Before consulting for the foundation, Michael was Undersecretary of the California Natural Resources Agency (CNRA) from 1991 to mid-1997. He was recruited to that position from his post as general counsel for the World Wildlife Fund. Prior to that, Michael had been a director of the Conservation Foundation and a deputy city attorney for the City of Los Angeles. Michael is known for innovating successful multi-stakeholder planning processes resulting in significant outcomes, particularly in the areas of natural resources conservation, urban open spaces, climate change, public funding, and engaging underserved communities. At CNRA, he saw the possibility to achieve greater outcomes by deploying simultaneous strategies to improve policy, refine regulations, acquire land and water rights, strengthen ocean protection, build capacity, and create networks but was stymied by tight budgets. Then he met Jeanne Sedgwick of the Packard Foundation. In this episode, The Annuity Man and Marcia Mantell discuss: The value of simplicity in understanding financial concepts Getting ready for the emotional aspect of retirement The key to financial success in retirement The importance of creating an estate plan Key Takeaways: If you can't explain a concept or product simply to somebody who doesn't live in your industry, then you don't understand that concept or product enough. You are going to retire someday, you have to be ready for not only the financial aspect but also the emotional aspect of retirement. This includes the loss of structure and social interactions. You will need to take the lead in creating new routines, new structures, and connections in chapter two of your life. The key to financial success in retirement is knowing how much you spend. The terms “essential expenses” and “discretionary expenses” simply mean “how much you have to spend” and “how much you want to spend.” Focus on having a good estimate of how much you spend each year and start there. Everyone who's still living needs to create an estate plan. Make your own funeral plans and decisions. Leave your children or family with an inheritance and a legacy rather than with financial and emotional burdens. "The key to financial success in retirement, in my humble opinion, is not what products you have or how great your investment strategy is. It's knowing how frickin much you spend." — Marcia Mantell Connect with Marcia Mantell: Website: https://mantellretirementconsulting.com/about/meet-marcia-mantell/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marciamantell/ Twitter:https://twitter.com/MarciaMantell Connect with The Annuity Man: Website: http://theannuityman.com/ Email: Stan@TheAnnuityMan.com Book: Owner's Manuals: https://www.stantheannuityman.com/how-do-annuities-work YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCXKKxvVslbeGAlEc5sra2g Get a Quote Today: https://www.stantheannuityman.com/annuity-calculator!
Tonight on Cryptique: Ryan tells the story of the Mantell UFO incident in which a decorated military pilot lost his life chasing a UFO. The government said he was chasing a weather balloon or Venus but there's plenty of evidence to the contrary. Guest: Jon Dauphiné, Esq. is the CEO of the Foundation for Financial Planning, the U.S.'s leading 501(c)(3) charity devoted to expanding access to pro bono financial planning for people in need. Dave Mantell, CFP®, CFA is a Managing Partner and wealth advisor at Stabler Wealth Management in Bellevue, WA. In a Nutshell: In fields like medicine, law, and education, pro bono work is an established part of the professional culture. My guests today are at the forefront of a movement to build an infrastructure for pro bono financial planning so that folks who can't afford to work with an advisor can gain access to the essential services we provide. On today's show, Jon Dauphiné and Dave Mantell explain how the Foundation for Financial Planning connects advisors to the resources they need to make a huge impact on people's lives and their communities. We also discuss how more advisors and -- hopefully -- conference organizers can get involved in building out this important network.
