He was a co-founder and Chief Science Officer of Plus Size Certified, Inc. and is a member of the Science Advisory Council of the International Council on Active Aging. In addition, he served as Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at UCSD Medical School, where he taught the Doctor-Patient Relationship course. He brings a specialty focus on physician wellbeing, physician burnout and elevating the patient experience. He has lectured at Pt. Loma Nazarene University and has provided a yearly 3-day Physician Wellness Studio for the American Society of Hematology. He is an invited guest instructor at Harvard University. Si toutes les espèces actuelles d'oiseaux possèdent toujours bel et bien des ailes, certaines ont vu leur membres antérieures s'atrophier au point de ne devenir que des moignons. C'est le cas notamment des oiseaux dits "coureurs" ou "Ratites". Si les Ratites ne forment pas un groupe biologique, ils possèdent des caractéristiques communes, à savoir une incapacité de voler suite à cette fameuse "perte" d'ailes, ainsi que des adaptations supérieures au reste des oiseaux pour naviguer au sol. Certains battent même des records de course, l'Autruche en tête, avec des pointes à 70 km/h !Les Ratites (qui tiennent ce nom de leur poitrine en forme de radeau, une poitrine plate car n'accueillant pas les puissants muscles du vol des autres oiseaux) sont présents sur tous presque tous les continents : Autruches en Afrique, Nandous en Asie, et plusieurs familles en Océanie, à savoir les Émeus, les Casoars et les Kiwis.Ces derniers, en plus de leur incapacité à voler, cumulent les bizarreries : ils ont un excellent odorat (contrairement à la plupart des oiseaux) grâce à des narines puissantes situées au bout de leur bec, ils ont des plumes qui ressemblent à de la fourrure ; et surtout, leur œuf est le plus gros de tous les oiseaux en termes de ratio bébé/maman. This is the story of an aircraft crash in January of 1956 that tragically ended the life of a military pilot. But the mystery behind the crash is strikingly similar to that of the famous Mantell UFO case. De dino's van Crystal Palace ParkMaarten en Gijs bezoeken het allereerste dino-park ter wereld! Zo'n 170 jaar vóór Jurassic Park werd er in Zuid-Londen al een prachtig park aangelegd met enorme beelden van de eerste dinosauriërs die toen bekend waren. Historicus (en vriend van de show) Ilja Nieuwland leidt ze langs de beelden, die stammen uit 1854 en die bezoekers ‘levensechte' dinosauriërs moesten laten zien. De dieren zijn nu nog steeds diep indrukwekkend. Als je bij station Crystal Palace uitstapt, wandel je binnen vijf minuten een dinowereld in zoals ze in de negentiende eeuw dachten dat die eruit heeft gezien. Vanuit de vijvers word je gadegeslagen door prehistorische zeereptielen. Een grote vleesetende Megalosaurus staart de bezoeker vanaf een heuveltje aan. De echte pronkstukken zijn de iguanodons, die te herkennen zijn aan de hoorns op de neus. Natuurlijk bezaten ze die niet echt, maar in 1854 dacht men nog van wél.Kunstenaar Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins die de beelden ontwierp, deed heus niet zomaar wat. Hij liet zich adviseren door de grootste wetenschapper uit die tijd: Richard Owen. We hebben het over zo'n dertig jaar na de ontdekking van het echtpaar Mantell, en evenveel jaren vóór de opgravingen in Bernissart. De Iguanodon ligt in 1854 niet meer met zijn buik op de grond als een soort leguaan, maar ziet er eerder uit als een fors uitgevallen neushoorn. Bij gebrek aan hard bewijs over uiterlijkheden van dino's baseerden ook wetenschappers hun voorstellingen vooral op de dieren die ze om zich heen zagen.De beelden in het park trokken in hun glorietijd honderdduizenden bezoekers. Alleen al bij de opening van het Geological Court, zoals het officieel heette, waren zo'n 40.000 mensen aanwezig. Kinderen en hun ouders vergaapten zich massaal aan de dieren uit een andere tijd, ver voor de bijbelse zondvloed. Prior to that, Michael had been a director of the Conservation Foundation and a deputy city attorney for the City of Los Angeles. Michael is known for innovating successful multi-stakeholder planning processes resulting in significant outcomes, particularly in the areas of natural resources conservation, urban open spaces, climate change, public funding, and engaging underserved communities. At CNRA, he saw the possibility to achieve greater outcomes by deploying simultaneous strategies to improve policy, refine regulations, acquire land and water rights, strengthen ocean protection, build capacity, and create networks but was stymied by tight budgets. Mantell, a Kentucky Air National Guard pilot, died in the crash of his P-51 Mustang fighter plane near Franklin, Kentucky, United States, after being sent in pursuit of an unidentified flying object.
