Gene and cohost Tim Swartz introduce a tale about a truly weird character who hung out on the fringes of UFO research with Bryan Shickley. An animator and storyteller, is best known for Fred Crisman: Cave of the Space Nazis, a short film inspired by fan letters sent to Amazing Stories in the 1940s, during the height of the Shaver Mystery. He has interviewed the family of controversial UFO figure Fred Crisman and collaborated with Pacific Northwest historians to adapt Crisman and Shaver's extraordinary lives into an upcoming tongue-in-cheek serialized audio drama. Crisman's life had many curious aspects. He was a key figure in the 1947 Maury Island UFO Sighting, where alleged fragments fell from a UFO. Or maybe they were just conventional pieces of metal. The story was the main focus of a book published in 1952, "The Coming of the Saucers," authored by former Amazing Stories editor Ray Palmer, and the "original" flying saucer witness, Kenneth Arnold. Gene and cohost Tim Swartz present a return visit from Dean Bertram, who has a Ph.D in history from the University of Sydney, Australia. His doctoral dissertation was titled “Flying Saucer Culture: An Historical Survey of American UFO Belief.” During this episode, he'll talk about his upcoming documentary, "The Man Who Invented Flying Saucers," about Raymond A. Palmer, notorious for introducing the legendary Shaver Mystery to the readers of Amazing Stories, the sci-fi magazine he edited. Bertram will reveal how the flying saucers were first discussed in that magazine, and expanded upon in Fate magazine, a pulp magazine Palmer co-founded and edited. The dark history of the UFO field, beginning with Men In Black, was chronicled by Palmer and the "original" flying saucer witness, Kenneth Arnold, in their book, "The Coming of Saucers." Bertram is also a filmmaker and film festival programmer. Over 75 years after the modern UFO era began, Bertram, an Australian expatriate and UFO historian, found himself living in central Wisconsin: In a neighboring county to the one Palmer called home, and just a short, back-road, commute to the rural property where Palmer ran his UFO publishing company. Steve Ward has been fascinated by the unexplained for over half a century. There were two major events that inspired his interest in the unexplained.Growing up in Michigan, the March 1966 UFO flap occurred virtually in his backyard. The following November a winged humanoid chased two couples down a lonely country road near Point Pleasant, West Virginia. The legend of the Mothman was born.Steve would be chasing the Mothman the rest of his life. Influenced primarily by John Keel and Jacques Vallee, his views on UFOs became unconventional and moved more toward a more paranormal explanation.Steve's main area of research is, what some call "high strangeness" or "window areas" (as Keel dubbed them) where disparate types of paranormal phenomena all seem to occur in the same location, and he believes that studying these paranormally active locations may be the key to understanding what the origin behind these manifestations may be.He has his own podcast called The High Strangeness Factor on the Paranormal UK Radio Network, and is a correspondent on Mack Maloney's Military X-Files, which can be found on that same network. Through his long career as a UFO researcher, Stringfield was considered the expert on UFO crashes and dead alien bodies. He had hundreds of sources. He gave the first crashed saucer lecture at the 1978 MUFON conference in Dayton despite the death threats that came in. Len was a friend of mine. Our correspondence can be viewed as a part of the collection of my documents that I have placed on the internet for all to see. Collection Scans Leonard Stringfield was born in 1920. He was director of CRIFO (Civilian Research, Interplanetary Flying Objects) - one of the world's largest research groups during the mid-5Os, and publisher of its newsletter, ORBIT (1953-1957). He also worked in cooperation with the United States Air Force (1953-1957), investigating and reporting UFO activity, having been assigned a special code number for reporting to the Air Defense Command in Columbus, Ohio. For over 30 years, Stringfield served in several of the major UFO organizations in a public relations capacity. From 1957 to 1970, he was public relations adviser with the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP). Later on, he was Director of Public Relations and a board member of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). He was also a regional investigator for the Center for UFO Studies, directed by Dr. J. Allen Hynek. Stringfield was an executive with DuBois Chemicals, an international manufacturer. Stringfield retired in 1981 as Director of Public Relations and Marketing Services for DuBois Chemicals, a division of Chemed Corp., after 31 years of service with the company. From 1967 to 1968 he served as Early Warning Coordinator for the University of Colorado UFO Project, screening UFO reports for possible scientific study. Stringfield was also an advisor to Sir Eric Gairy, former Prime Minister of Grenada, 1977-78, during his efforts to establish a UFO research agency within the framework of the United Nations. Stringfield passed away in 1994, leaving a string of fascinating publications behind, one of which is "UFO Crash Retrievals: The Inner Sanctum - Status Report VI," written not long before his death. Long before the existence of AAWSAP or AATIP, there was another UFO investigation within the Dept. of Defense named ATP [the Advanced Theoretical Physics program], headed by a veteran intelligence officer named Col. John Alexander. Alexander and colleagues searched for hidden evidence of UFO crash retrieval/reverse engineering programs but didn't find any. For years afterward, Alexander was skeptical whenever "crashed saucers" were mentioned, but what about now?  His detractors refer to Col. Alexander as "Dr. Death”. He is purported to have psychic powers and mind control abilities, is often associated with the shadowy "Aviary" group of UFO insiders, and is viewed with fear and suspicion whenever he attends a UFO conference, on a par with the Men in Black or Darth Vader. Alexander chuckles about how he is perceived by ufologists. He led special forces teams into combat during the Vietnam conflict, was involved with the US Army's remote viewing program, became the head of Non-Lethal Weapons research at Los Alamos lab, and in the 90's, hooked up with NIDS, the National Institute for Discovery Science which was created and funded by Las Vegas billionaire Robert Bigelow. Alexander was with Bigelow when the businessman purchased what came to be known as Skinwalker Ranch.  In this episode, Dr. Alexander reveals to George and Jeremy how his view of the “crashed saucers” story has evolved, shares his impressions from the recent Sol conference, discusses previous attempts to achieve UFO transparency through congressional action, and gives his assessment of fellow intelligence officer Col. Inspired by the sworn testimony of UFO whistleblowers, Congress is grappling with legislation designed to force the disclosure of materials, craft, and bodies allegedly collected from crash sites. The current wave of whistleblowers is not the first to spill secrets about UFO crashes and reverse engineering efforts by military contractors. In 1997, a high-ranking Army Intelligence official Colonel Phillip Corso shocked the world with his account about a Pentagon office charged with dribbling bits and pieces of alien technology out to major corporations and labs. The tech, Corso said, came from crashes near Roswell New Mexico. Corso's book "The Day After Roswell" became a huge bestseller in 1997, the 50th anniversary of the Roswell events.  But five years before he released a book, long before he was known to anyone in the UFO field, Corso told his story to George Knapp. Corso also sat down for two lengthy interviews conducted by personnel associated with NIDS, the National Institute for Discovery Science. The interviews were recorded, though the recordings were never released.
