Atlanta can seem like it's a very long way from the oystering communities in Florida's Panhandle. There are, in fact, hundreds of miles between them. But there are ways even distant places are intimately connected, perhaps more intimately than you'd guess. And when one of those places is in trouble, those connections get revealed. This is the story of what's happening to the oysters in Apalachicola Bay, and why that has inspired interstate legal battles—even a Supreme Court lawsuit. It's also the story of what a place whose whole identity revolves around seafood does, when that seafood is threatened. The audio from oysterman A.L. Quick was gathered in 2006 as part of the Southern Foodways Alliance oral history project on Florida's Forgotten Coast. You can listen to that oral history and more than a dozen others with oystermen and other residents of Franklin County at southernfoodways.org. Learn more about your ad choices. Michael McKee allegedly told Monique Tepe he could kill her at any time. That she would always be his wife. That he would find her wherever she went. According to witnesses cited in an unsealed Franklin County affidavit, those threats were made during and after a marriage that allegedly included strangulation, sexual violence, and sustained emotional abuse. Monique left. She divorced McKee in 2017, married Spencer Tepe in 2020, and built a life with two young children in Columbus, Ohio.On December 30, 2025, Spencer and Monique were found shot to death inside their Weinland Park home. McKee has been charged with aggravated murder and aggravated burglary. He has pleaded not guilty. This episode explores the psychology of sustained threat — how chronic fear physically reshapes the brain, why normalization of danger makes escalation harder to detect from the inside, and why telling survivors to "just leave" ignores the most dangerous phase of domestic violence. Court records allege McKee surveilled the Tepe home in the weeks before the killings using a vehicle with stolen license plates. Surveillance video allegedly captured him on the Tepe property during the Big Ten Championship weekend, three weeks before the murders. We also examine how McKee allegedly moved through four state licensing systems over a decade — Virginia, Colorado, Nevada, Illinois — with expiring credentials, a malpractice lawsuit, and a process server who couldn't locate him, while no institution connected his alleged history of domestic violence threats to the licenses being issued in his name.Monique Tepe's story challenges everything we think we know about escaping danger.#MoniqueTepe #MichaelMcKee #SpencerTepe #DomesticViolence #HiddenKillers #NormalizationOfFear #SystemFailure #AggravatedMurder #ColumbusOhio #TrueCrimePodcastJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? The probable cause affidavit in the Michael McKee case has been unsealed, and the details are damning. According to court documents filed in Franklin County, McKee allegedly stalked his ex-wife Monique Tepe and her husband Spencer for weeks before their December 30th murders—and drove 900 miles round trip in just 17 hours to carry out the killings. Here's what we now know from the affidavit:McKee allegedly entered the Tepe property on December 6th while the couple was at the Big Ten Championship game in Indianapolis. Surveillance video captured him on the property for several hours. Monique left the game at halftime, reportedly upset about something involving her ex-husband.Witnesses told investigators McKee had threatened Monique for years, allegedly telling her he could "kill her at any time" and that she would "always be his wife." At least one witness reported allegations of strangulation and forced sex during their marriage. On December 29th, McKee allegedly left his cell phone at the hospital where he worked in Rockford, Illinois. That phone showed no activity for 17 hours—the exact window needed to drive 450 miles to Columbus, commit the murders at approximately 3:50 a.m., and return.Investigators tracked a silver SUV with a distinctive window sticker to McKee. After the murders, fresh scrape marks appeared where the sticker had been. A firearm found at his Chicago condo was matched through ballistics to the crime scene.McKee was arrested 11 days later at a Chick-fil-A near his workplace. He has pleaded not guilty to four counts of aggravated murder and one count of aggravated burglary.#TrueCrimeToday #MichaelMcKee #TepeCase #BreakingNews #ColumbusOhio #AffidavitUnsealed #AggravatedMurder #SpencerTepe #MoniqueTepe #DomesticViolenceJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Michael McKee is sitting in a Franklin County jail cell facing four counts of aggravated murder. The evidence police have described is damning—ballistic matches, vehicle surveillance, the figure in the alley footage, and a firearm suppressor. Prosecutors allege the vascular surgeon drove 300 miles from Chicago to Columbus to execute his ex-wife Monique Tepe and her husband Dr. Spencer Tepe while their children slept nearby. Eleven days later, investigators say they recovered the murder weapon from McKee's property. But how do you prove premeditation when there are no eyewitnesses and an eight-year gap since the divorce? And what defense strategies are even available when the forensic evidence appears this overwhelming? Former felony prosecutor Eric Faddis joins us live to break down exactly what the state needs to establish—and where cases like this can fall apart. Faddis spent years in the Special Victims Unit handling first-degree murder cases and has tried 45+ jury trials. He knows how prosecutors weaponize contradictory alibis, how they establish motive across a decade-long timeline, and why charges were upgraded from murder to aggravated murder. We'll also examine McKee through the Dark Triad framework—narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy—to analyze how these personality patterns typically manifest in criminal defense situations. A man who allegedly evaded a malpractice lawsuit nine times and fled his marriage after seven months may be incapable of accepting accountability even when his freedom depends on it. The same arrogance that allegedly drove him to murder may be the thing that convicts him.#MichaelMcKee #MoniqueTepe #SpencerTepe #EricFaddis #TepeMurders #AggravatedMurder #DarkTriad #ColumbusOhio #TrueCrimeLive #HiddenKillersLiveJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Today we have major developments in the Spencer and Monique Tepe murder case. An affidavit unsealed in Franklin County reveals disturbing new allegations about suspect Michael McKee's behavior in the weeks, months, and years before the December 30th killings.According to witnesses who spoke with investigators, McKee told Monique he could "kill her at any time," that he would "find her and buy the house right next to her," and that "she will always be his wife"—statements allegedly made during and after their marriage, which ended in divorce in 2017. Witnesses also told investigators that McKee allegedly strangled Monique and forced unwanted sex on her during the marriage. The affidavit reveals that surveillance captured McKee walking through the Tepes' property on December 7th, 2025, while the couple was in Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championship game. Monique reportedly left the game early, upset about something involving her ex-husband. Three weeks later, both she and Spencer were found shot to death in their Weinland Park home.Investigators tracked McKee's vehicle arriving in Columbus before the murders and leaving afterward. His cell phone showed no activity from December 29th until after noon on December 30th. We're going live with defense attorney Bob Motta to break down Michael McKee's defense strategy after his not guilty plea to four counts of aggravated murder. McKee is now represented by Diane Menashe—the Columbus defense attorney who got Dr. William Husel acquitted of fourteen murder charges in 2022 by calling one witness and letting the prosecution's case collapse. The evidence against McKee appears substantial. Ballistics matching a weapon from his Chicago condo to shell casings at the scene. Vehicle tracking. Surveillance footage. A suppressor. No forced entry. Eight years between the divorce from Monique Tepe and her murder alongside her husband Spencer Tepe. But Menashe doesn't build defenses—she destroys prosecutions. And she's facing a Franklin County team where the lead prosecutor is trying her first felony case ever.Bob Motta walks us through how Menashe might attack each piece of evidence, whether NIBIN ballistics matching holds up to cross-examination, and what the no-forced-entry detail could mean for an alternative theory of the case. We'll discuss whether the eight-year gap helps the defense argue this wasn't an obsessed ex-husband, and what the suppressor specification signals about premeditation. The man accused of murdering Monique Tepe and her husband Dr. Spencer Tepe pleaded not guilty on January 23rd to four counts of aggravated murder. Michael McKee, 39, Monique's ex-husband, appeared via video before a Franklin County magistrate and waived bond. He remains in custody. Prosecutors allege McKee, a vascular surgeon, traveled from Illinois to Columbus and killed the couple in the early morning hours of December 30th. Spencer was shot multiple times. Monique sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. Their two children, ages four and one, were found inside the home unharmed. Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant has called this a "targeted" and "domestic violence related attack." Investigators say surveillance footage places McKee's vehicle at the scene before and after the killings. When multiple firearms were seized from his Rockford property, preliminary ballistic analysis linked one weapon to three 9mm shell casings recovered from the Tepe residence. The charges carry firearm specifications for using a gun and a suppressor. McKee is represented by Diane Menashe, who previously defended Dr. William Husel. Monique divorced McKee in 2017. She married Spencer in 2019. If convicted, McKee faces a minimum of life with parole eligibility after 32 years—or life without parole.#MichaelMcKee #MoniqueTepe #SpencerTepe #TepeMurders #ColumbusOhio #AggravatedMurder #BallisticEvidence #DomesticViolenceHomicide #JusticeForTepe #TepeCaseJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Michael McKee stood before a Franklin County magistrate on January 23rd and pleaded not guilty to four counts of aggravated murder in the deaths of Monique Tepe and Dr. Spencer Tepe. The 39-year-old vascular surgeon waived bond and remains in custody. His defense attorney, Diane Menashe—known for representing Dr. William Husel in the Mount Carmel deaths case—entered the plea on his behalf via video appearance. Prosecutors allege McKee traveled from Illinois to Columbus and killed his ex-wife and her husband in the early morning hours of December 30th while their two young children slept nearby. The children, ages four and one, were found unharmed but alone with their parents' bodies. Columbus police say they have surveillance footage placing McKee's vehicle at the scene before and after the killings, and preliminary ballistic analysis links a firearm seized from his property to shell casings recovered inside the home. The charges include firearm specifications for using a gun and a suppressor. McKee's medical license expired months before the killings. Monique divorced him in 2017 after less than two years of marriage. She and Spencer were days away from their fifth wedding anniversary. The suppressor allegation changes everything in the McKee case. Prosecutors allege Dr. Michael McKee used a firearm equipped with a silencer to kill Monique and Spencer Tepe while their young children slept in another room. That's not impulsive violence. That's allegedly planning the murders down to making sure no one would hear the shots. The Franklin County grand jury handed down five counts: four counts of aggravated murder and one count of aggravated burglary. Under Ohio law, proving "prior calculation and design" is required for aggravated murder. The suppressor allegation gives prosecutors a powerful tool to establish premeditation.Defense attorney Bob Motta breaks down the indictment. Why four counts for two victims? What does the aggravated burglary charge tell us about entry when there's no forced entry documented? And how definitive is the NIBIN ballistics match that's still being called "preliminary"?McKee gave police an alibi before his arrest. It didn't hold up. He only invoked his right to remain silent after the cuffs went on. Those pre-arrest statements could be devastating at trial — but Motta explains what the defense would need to argue for suppression.McKee is 39 years old. A vascular surgeon. No criminal record. No malpractice. His neighbors called him friendly and normal. He's facing a minimum of life with parole after 32 years. Prosecutors have not filed capital specifications — they're not seeking the death penalty. Is that strategy, or does it signal weakness? Motta analyzes.#MichaelMcKee #MoniqueTepe #SpencerTepe #TepeMurders #TrueCrimeToday #BobMotta #Suppressor #AggravatedMurder #OhioIndictment #NIBINMatchJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? If you want to understand not just the headlines but the gritty realities of law, training, and police accountability, this episode is a must-listen.Welcome back to Lawyer Talk! In this special panel episode, “Minnesota ICE,” Steve Palmer brings together a powerhouse group of voices to dig deep into the complexities of police use of force, especially when officers are confronted with split-second decisions involving moving vehicles. Joining Steve Palmer at the table are veteran law enforcement officer Eric Delbert, renowned police defense attorney Mark Collins, and civil rights litigator Dave Goldstein—each bringing decades of experience, unique perspectives, and real-world insights to an issue captivating national attention. The discussion kicks off with reflections on high-profile cases, including the recent Minnesota shooting involving a federal ICE agent and the local Franklin County officer Connor Grubb, whose prosecution highlighted how perspectives can shift based on the facts known to police at the time of a critical incident. The group navigates the legal frameworks that govern use of force, the importance of training, the shifting public attitudes toward police authority, and the ways grand juries and media narratives influence outcomes before all the facts are in.You will hear candid opinions about grand jury secrecy, the impact of recent protests on police morale and recruitment, and robust debate over qualified immunity for officers and public officials. Throughout the episode, the panel emphasizes the need for thorough investigations, transparency, and legal guidance, all while maintaining a commitment to justice—no matter who is sitting at the defense or the prosecution table.Pull up a seat and join the conversation as Lawyer Talk takes you beyond the soundbites and into the heart of the issues shaping law enforcement and civil rights today.Top 3 takeaways for fellow legal professionals, law enforcement, and anyone passionate about justice:Officers' Use of Force is Complex: The legal standard for police use of deadly force is built around the reasonable officer standard—not civilian self-defense. It's shaped by landmark cases like Graham v. Connor, demanding juries step into an officer's shoes, considering split-second perceptions and training, not just “what would you do?”Obey Now, Challenge Later: The panel reinforced—no matter how tense or unjust a police interaction may feel—comply in the moment, challenge in court. Civil rights and justice are far better protected and remedied after the fact, rather than escalating roadside confrontations. The Need for Clarity & Transparency: Ohio (and the nation) desperately needs clearer jury instructions and legal guidance in police shooting cases. As Mark Collins pointed out, inconsistency across courts and shifting grand jury protocols put officers, victims, and the justice process on unsteady ground. Transparent, thorough investigations and communication with the public can help restore trust.Moments00:00 Commitment to Truth and Accountability08:48 "Officer's Response to Threat"13:29 Reasonable Officer Perspective Explained20:14 "Compliance with Police Orders"23:39 "Comply Now, Address Later"26:36 Police Recruitment and Accountability Challenges36:20 Polarized Reactions to Minnesota Case41:23 Body Cam Perspective Sparks Debate50:33 "Unexplained Noise in Basement"56:26 Assessing Threats and Justification01:02:12 "Justice, Pressure, and Settlements"01:06:29 "1890 Case: Federal Immunity Standard"01:12:25...

After more than 100 days in hospitals and rehab centers, Rob returned home to the farm just in time for Thanksgiving last year. This season is a reminder of what they walked through and how blessed they are to still have Rob with them. During the podcast, Kerri describes how their journey in dairy farming started and where they are now. Eight years ago, she and Rob started dairy farming from scratch, renting different facilities and growing their herd until they entered into a partnership with two brothers. About four weeks after her husband's brain injury, Kerri was faced with finishing the transition process on her own and making the decision to sell the cows or buy out the rest of the partnership. Knowing Rob needed to come home to a full barn, Kerri made a decision to move forward with the transition. She reflects on her decision-making process, the trusted team they've built, the community that stepped up, and the simple joys she gathers from her animals and children. Ultimately, Kerri has learned how to be grateful for each day and for what they have even when the circumstances are not what she expected them to be.
