Hello Filmy People! This pod was delayed slightly due to us attending the London Podcast Festival (There is a funny story about this in the pod). On the show today we review American Animals: Spencer Reinhard, Warren Lipka, Eric Borsuk and Chas Allen are four friends who live an ordinary existence in Kentucky. After a visit to Transylvania University, Lipka comes up with the idea to steal the rarest and most valuable books from the school's library. As one of the most audacious art heists in U.S. history starts to unfold, the men question whether their attempts to inject excitement and purpose into their lives are simply misguided attempts at achieving the American dream. We also review Amazon prime video original Jack Ryan Author Tom Clancy introduced the character of Jack Ryan in a series of books before Ryan headed to the big screen in several films. Now the former U.S. Marine is featured in an episodic series for the first time, with John Krasinski portraying Ryan in this Amazon original thriller that centers on Ryan as an up-and-coming CIA analyst. He is thrust into a dangerous field assignment for the first time and uncovers a pattern in terrorist communication. That launches him into the middle of a dangerous gambit with a new breed of terrorism that threatens destruction on a global scale. Finally we also review Disenchantment After tackling modern times with "The Simpsons" and the future with "Futurama," producer Matt Groening steps into the past with "Disenchantment." The animated fantasy series geared toward adults takes place in the crumbling medieval kingdom of Dreamland. It follows the misadventures of hard-drinking young princess Bean, her feisty elf companion Elfo and personal demon Luci. The oddball trio encounters the likes of ogres, sprites, imps, trolls and human fools along the way. The voice cast features Abbi Jacobson as Bean and includes veteran voiceover artists such as John DiMaggio, Billy West and Maurice LaMarche. Six years out of prison, Chas Allen joins the show to talk about the time him and his three college friends attempted to steal 12 million dollars worth of rare artwork from their campus library.(Yes, this really happened.)Since then, the incident - later dubbed the "Transylvania book heist" - has been transformed into a film called "American Animals", now out in theaters across the country. While it captures much of what unfolded in Lexington, Kentucky, 2004, there's more to the story. To Chas' story. Today, he was ready to tell it.
At 19 years old, Chas Allen, now and author and motivational speaker, was a member of the crew that pulled the Transylvania University rare book heist (one of the F.B.I.’s “all-time most significant art theft cases”) in Lexington, KY. Their haul included a first editions of John James Audubon’s BIRD OF AMERICA and Charles Darwin’s ON THE ORIGIN OF THE SPECIES. This heist inspired the film American Animals (out in June); in it, Allen is portrayed by Blake Jenner. Allen made his debut as an author in 2011 with MR. PINK: THE INSIDE STORY OF THE TRANSYLVANIA BOOK HEIST. His next book, EVOLUTION: BECOMING A CRIMINAL, will release on June 19. With both, he hopes to be a “voice for people who are lost” and encourage them to “come back to the straight and narrow.”
Moderator Sam Fragoso discusses AMERICAN ANIMALS with Actor Blake Jenner and the man he plays in the film, Chas Allen. Recorded at the Landmark in Los Angeles on 6/1/18.
