Andy J. Pizza is an illustrator.  Sometimes he uses pictures. Like in his kid's books, comics, and client work for the likes of The New York Times, Apple, or Nickelodeon.  Sometimes he uses words. Like when he's making his podcast Creative Pep Talk. CPT consists of monologues on building a thriving creative practice and conversations with creative powerhouses like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Abbi Jacobson, and Morgan Harper Nichols. His favorite way to illustrate ideas is with analogies and stories on stage. Andy's style of public speaking is one part TED Talk, one part one-man show — with a sprinkle of stand-up comedy. In this episode, we talk about creative taste and intuition, watching the tape, playing your hits, creative habits, and why he's more focused on storytelling than ever before. Andy J. If you listen to this podcast, you know that suburban women are a key voting bloc coming into the midterm elections. And they are fired up – about abortion rights, about their kids' schools, about voting rights, and so much more. So this week, we're taking a moment to talk about what exactly is on suburban women's minds right now. One of our favorite organizers, Julie Womack, drops by the pod to discuss what she's been hearing on the ground. Rachel adds what she's been hearing from women on her Troublemaker Tour, and Jasmine and Amanda talk about what they've been hearing in their communities. Everyone agrees that pundits and the media get a lot wrong about suburban women, like the idea that we'll “forget” about reproductive rights, or that we'll just vote with our husbands. (If anything, it's the other way around! Republicans are starting to have not just a Suburban Women Problem, but a Dad Problem as well.)Rachel then sits down with Sarah Longwell of The Focus Group podcast. Sarah recently ran a focus group with suburban women and she shares those findings with Rachel. She also chats about her “flippers” – women who voted for Trump in 2016 and Biden in 2020 – and how she thinks they're likely to vote this year. Finally, Amanda, Jasmine and Rachel raise a glass to working parents, attending the Congressional Black Caucus conference, and to Amanda's daughter getting to see the White House in this episode's “Toast to Joy.”With the election just around the corner, it's time to organize... like a woman! That means digging deep, getting vulnerable, and finding our courage. On Monday, October 10, Abbi Jacobson from A League of Their Own and Piper Perabo from Yellowstone are joining forces with Red Wine & Blue because they believe in the power of women supporting women. You can find out more about this exciting virtual event at redwine.blue.For a transcript of this episode, please email theswppod@redwine.blue.

Batter up!Ok, we're a little late on this one but as we sit on the brink of the MLB playoffs it only felt appropriate to step up to the plate and take a look at this new iteration of a beloved classic.  It's time for 'A League of Their Own'The comedy series from Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham about the 1940s All-American Girls Professional Baseball League is a reimagining of Penny Marshall's 1992 film of the same name. While the energy is familiar the content truly has room to breathe in this iteration and it's just an unequivocal delight.  We had the unique pleasure of sitting down with one of the stars of the show; Canada's own Kelly McCormack about lacing up her shoes and finding just the right glove to get on the field for this show that has the potential to have some serious legs for years to come.

In episode 20, we "chat up" the Amazon Prime series A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN with author and poet Toni Asante Lightfoot about the character Max Chapman, her family including her trans uncle Bertie, best friend Clance, and Rockford's African American community as depicted in the series. In the 1992 "A League of Their Own" feature film on which this series is based, you see the grit and romance of the game with the Rockford Peaches and women baseball teams that were part of the All American Professional Girls Baseball League during WWII. What was not prominent in the 1992 movie (more subtext) are untold stories of African American, Latina, and queer women baseball players and the lives they lived in the 1940s and 50s. These stories are highlighted in the Amazon Prime series. A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN (the 2022 series) is co-created by Abbi Jacobson (who plays Rockford Peaches player Carson Shaw) and Will Graham. BONUS content: Toni Asante Lightfoot reads her poem “Bat Her Up: Mom's Mabley watches Negro women play ball for their supper” (mentioned in Episode 20). You'll find the bonus content at this LINK. “I was a queer kid and I didn't really have a vocabulary for that — I don't know what was ‘wrong' with me — but I had this sense I wasn't right for the world exactly as it was around me,” said screenwriter Will Graham. “So I think stories, movies, TV, comic books, novels…they were a place I could escape and process what was happening to me.” Graham continued, “I think that's the impulse that brought me to making things. The idea of taking people somewhere outside the space of their normal lives that's special. Not just giving them a fun adventure but something they can take back with them.” These projects include Movie 43, Alpha House, Mozart in the Jungle, and the new series A League of Their Own. The latest series is a comedy about the WWII All-American professional women's baseball league. The ensemble stars Abbi Jacobson, D'Arcy Carden, Chanté Adams, Molly Emphraim, and Nick Offerman. The professional women's baseball team the Rockford Peaches were immortalized in the 1992 box office hit A League Of Their Own. Thirty years later, they're back in a new Amazon Prime series of the same name. Co-created by and starring Broad City alum Abbi Jacobson, the series showcases a new set of fictionalized characters, played by Chanté Adams, D'Arcy Carden, and more. While exploring queer themes and racial segregation, the show is a fresh take that both pays homage and stands on its own.

Jess and Carolyn share a love of Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell, who were their gateway into the 1992 film that the series is based on. They weren't sure how the new series would hold up without their icons, but it's safe to say that Abbi Jacobson and crew have made the case for retelling the story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. DTW is back again with some new shows that hit the big streamers;  This Fool over on Hulu, and Amazon finally released its tentpole show, A League of Their Own.   The guys really enjoyed the Hulu offering as it incorporates many Los Angeles-isms that the locals (like Raul) will get off on, but also brings the heart and the feels for its characters trying to live and thrive in an urban environment, which any and all audiences will be on board for.   Over at Amazon, the same cannot be said!  Abbi Jacobson has worked on this for the streamer since 2017 and after many delays (and what can be presumed to be infinite rewrite and reimagining's) creatively and societall unfortunately the juice just doesn't seem to be worth the squeeze AKA enough meat on that bone to really take a big bite out of a massive property based on a beloved film...not every property can or should be made into TV!!  Listen along as the guys give props and daps, but also some tough love for these "punk-ass bitch" shows! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/downtopod/message
