In 1992, US President George H.W. Bush famously remarked, during a speech at the Annual Convention of the National Religious Broadcasters, that the American family needs to be “a lot more like the Waltons and a lot less like the Simpsons.”The longest-running American animated series, longest-running American sitcom, and the longest-running American scripted primetime television series, both in seasons and individual episodes. The Simpsons is, quite frankly, a phenomenon, and the long-awaited The Simpsons Movie took nearly two decades to come to fruition, as fans eagerly anticipated a feature film adaptation of their beloved show. But despite being a long-running, beloved show, the making of the movie wasn't easy, and it faced numerous rewrites, with the script being revised over a hundred times before its release. Many iconic characters from the series made appearances, with a total of over 320 characters included throughout the movie, with creator Matt Groening aiming to create a cinematic experience that would appeal to both long-time fans and newcomers to the franchise. But appealing to newcomers led to many fan-favourite characters being omitted from the script, and somehow Arnold Schwarzenegger and Rainier Wolfcastle exist within the same universe? But who copied whom? I guess we'll never truly know... I would love to hear your thoughts on The Simpsons Movie (2007) !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! The series is a satirical parody of a middle class American lifestyle epitomized by its eponymous family, which consists of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie. Video games based on the series have reached multiple platforms since their debut in 1991. The Simpsons' first video game release, The Simpsons, developed and published by Konami, saw a release on the Commodore 64 and DOS, while Bart vs. the Space Mutants (1991), developed by Imagineering, expanded the franchise into new platforms, including the Amstrad CPC, NES and Master System. Over the next few years, the franchise would continue to expand, releasing system-exclusive games, such as the PC's Cartoon Studio (1996) and the PlayStation's The Simpsons Wrestling (2001). The release of The Simpsons Game (2007), developed by EA Redwood Shores (Visceral Games), further expanded the franchise, appearing on new platforms including the Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. ________________________________________________________________________ Grab a beer, a slice of pizza and come hang out with us. It's been a minute since I've put out a new show, and so I thought maybe I'd let you in on what has been keeping me so busy. A couple years ago, I started working on an oral history project funded by the city- appropriately titled The Olympia Music History Project. We (myself, Mariella Luz and Kelsey Smith) have since broken off from the city into our own nonprofit organization, and I'm excited to announce that we are launching olympiamusichistory.org on New Year's Day, 2025! So let me tell you about what this is: I was a part of a team that interviewed 30 people who were doing significant things in Olympia's legendary indie music scene between 1980-2002. We spoke with folks from globally revered bands like Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney and The Gossip, as well as hometown heroes including Young Pioneers, The Noses, Fitz of Depression, even Olympia's only known ska band of that era, Engine 54. I've learned so much working on this project- and I've heard all the interviews several times, because I'm the guy who edited them. Have you ever seen that T-Shirt that says “Reading is Sexy?” That was designed by Sarah Utter, the singer and guitarist from The Bangs. Allegedly Patrick Swayze lived here at some point, but I don't know if he ever got out to any punk shows. And yeah, Nirvana was a part of our scene for a while too, I forget what happened after they moved to Seattle. And there were all these festivals- International Pop Underground Convention in 1991, The YoYo A Go Go festivals after that, Ladyfest- which became an international series- and a groundbreaking, grassroots rock opera called The Transfused. All these things happened in that 22-year window. My interview with a guy named John Foster focuses on a couple of crucial things happening, that the scene- at least in part- owes its existence. The first one is the enactment of the Green Line Policy at KAOS- that's KAOS, 89.3 FM, Olympia- a game-changing move making it against the rules to play any less than 80% independently released music. That had a huge impact on a lot of creative people that tuned in. The second is the publication of OP Magazine, a dense zine focused on independent music of every kind, and featured contributing writers like Matt Groening, Eugene Chadbourne, Jonathan Richman, on and on. This magazine was globally distributed from right here in Olympia, and served as a regularly updated encyclopedia of indie music- and where to get it. Basically, it was like a precursor to something in-between Pitchfork and Bandcamp, in the pre-internet dark ages. John Foster was at the helm for both of these endeavors, and he was one of the people I interviewed for the Olympia Music History Project, and here is our conversation, recorded in the historic Rockway-Leland building downtown.

We discuss a true touchstone of our childhood Halloweens: The Simpsons' inaugural Treehouse of Horror episode from 1990, then we preview Samantha's Spooktober pick: the 2019 horror/comedy Ready or Not! Stay spooky, friends. Stay Spooky. I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha & Indy Randhawa "Treehouse of Horror" is the third episode of the second season of the American animated television series The Simpsons. It originally aired on Fox in the United States on October 25, 1990. The episode was inspired by 1950s horror comics, and begins with a disclaimer that it may be too scary for children. It is the first Treehouse of Horror episode. These episodes do not obey the show's rule of realism and are not treated as canon. The plot revolves around three scary stories told by the Simpson children in the family's treehouse. The first segment involves a haunted house that is based on various haunted house films, primarily The Amityville Horror (1979) and Poltergeist (1982). In the second segment, Kang and Kodos are introduced when the Simpsons are abducted by aliens. The third segment is an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's 1845 poem "The Raven". James Earl Jones guest starred in all three segments. The episode was received positively, being included in several critics' "best of" lists. Critics singled out The Raven for praise, although Simpsons creator Matt Groening was concerned that it would be seen as pretentious. Ready or Not is a 2019 American dark comedy horror film directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, and written by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy. It stars Samara Weaving, Adam Brody, Mark O'Brien, Elyse Levesque, Nicky Guadagni, Henry Czerny, and Andie MacDowell. It follows a young bride who is hunted by her spouse's wealthy family as part of a wedding night ritual to worship the Devil.

Blurb: Matt and I talk about the legacy of The Simpsons, what it means to go from super fan to icon, always knowing he wanted to draw cartoons, having kid are better than making great art, how music makes The Simpsons great, how Jay could come back to work if he came back crawling on his knees, and how Jay agreed to crawl. Bio: Matt Groening was born in Portland, Oregon, on February 15, the third of five children. His father, Homer, was a cartoonist and filmmaker. From an early age, Matt created his own cartoons, amusing his friends and annoying his teachers. Groening attended Evergreen State College in Washington State, where he studied philosophy and continued his interest in cartoons, comics and music. After his graduation in 1977, Groening headed to Los Angeles where he struggled in immobilizing but irksome poverty. Increasingly frustrated by the traffic, smog, and his landlords, Matt began to vent his angst to his friends by sending them cartoons starring a bug-eyed rabbit named Binky. Groening soon began to publish and sell these cartoons at the record shop where he worked. Their popularity encouraged Matt to syndicate, and in April 1980, Life In Hell® formally debuted in the Los Angeles Reader and ran successfully in more than 250 newspapers around the world and half-dozen languages before Groening concluded it's production in 2012. Life in Hell® has also been collected in a best-selling series of books with over two million copies in print, including Love is Hell, Work is Hell, School is Hell, Childhood is Hell, Akbar & Jeff's Guide to Life, Greetings From Hell, The Big Book of Hell, With Love From Hell, How to Go to Hell, The Road to Hell, Binky's Guide to Love, and Love is Still Hell. In 1987 James L. Brooks approached Matt about creating animated shorts to fit between sketches of “The Tracey Ullman Show.” Matt agreed, but instead of using the Life in Hell® characters, he created an entirely new cast: The Simpsons, which bear the names of his family members, Homer, Marge, Lisa and Maggie (Bart is an anagram for brat). The Simpsons were soon spun off into a half-hour animated series which first aired on December 17, 1989 with a Christmas special, followed by the series premiere on January 14, 1990. It has since gone on to become the longest running prime-time animated show in television history. An international hit, the series has also spawned a licensing and merchandising empire. It has spanned a hit feature film and a revolutionary virtual coaster ride at Universal Studios. He also created the Emmy Award-winning animated series “Futurama.” As a cartoonist, Groening began his “Life in Hell” weekly comic strip series in the 1980s, and concluded it in 2012. In 1993, he formed Bongo Comics Group, and continues to serve as publisher. Winner of multiple Emmy Awards, the prestigious Peabody Award, Annie Awards and the Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year, the highest honor presented by the National Cartoonist Society, he also received a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in February 2012 and was personally honored with designing five U.S. postage stamps.

Dimitri and Khalid record what is probably the last SJ episode before their assassinations by apoplectic Simpsons reply guys lashing out in the throes of total ego death. Topics include: the dominance of “Gen X irony” in 1990s pop culture, the rise of contextual/information-based toy culture, Pynchon's cameos, reflections on Bartmania, the modern tendency to view the Simpsons as both profound and deeply left-wing, “the purpose of a Simpsons is what it does”, the Trump trial self-immolator's anti-Simpsons manifesto, DSA Lisa teaching us to perpetuate official LIES… The Simpsons as reflection “of the cynicism at the heart of the neoliberal economy”, FOX's deliberate “selling” of Gen X, Douglas Coupland's generation-defining book, the inversion of words like “stupid” and “bad”, the centrality of the hot couch and “ironic consumption”, “the Simpsons is to Fox what Bart Simpson is to Principal Skinner”, similarities with the fourth wall-breaking WWF Attitude Era, the 1993 paper “Homer Simpson's Eyes and the Culture of Late Nostalgia”, Time vs. “Megatrends”, Bill Cosby's “ontological run-in with Bart” and his defeat by the “superior intelligence of the ‘toon”… The secret etymology of the “Bad Boy” and precursors to the Bart Simpson archetype in Gilded Age America - specifically the creepy neotenous “Yellow Kid” comic strip, as well as the wildly successful “Peck's Bad Boy” series by Wisconsin Governor George Wilbur Peck… Bart failing to embody the Nietzschean übermensch while inoculating you to the nihilism of the neoliberal 90s, The Simpsons as information conversion spectacle, Matt Groening's revolting foot massage on the Lolita Express, the inexplicable number of Harvard mathematics Ph.Ds on the Simpsons writing staff, and why all “floating timeline” adult-oriented ‘toons are structurally conservative and inexorably sus.

Escuchar audio

Embarking on the journey into the world of mokuhanga, each of us starts with a unique desire. It begins with early prints, guided by exploration, and the innate desire to create something—anything—all viewed through the prism of mokuhanga, shaping our voices in this captivating journey. In this episode of the Unfinished Print, I speak with the burgeoning mokuhanga printmaker Jack Moranetz. We discuss how he got involved in the art form, his early prints, his visit to Japan and meeting David Bull, collaborations, and how he approaches his printmaking. Please follow The Unfinished Print and my own mokuhanga work on Instagram @andrezadoroznyprints or email me at theunfinishedprint@gmail.com Notes: may contain a hyperlink. Simply click on the highlighted word or phrase. Artists works follow after the note if available. Pieces are mokuhanga unless otherwise noted. Dimensions are given if known. Print publishers are given if known. Jack Moranetz - website, YouTube, Etsy Awagami - is arguably the largest paper making company in Japan at the moment. With a large International name, Awagami sponsors, and promotes its paper all over the world. More information can be found on its website, here. Dick Blick Art Supplies - is an art supply store with various brick and mortar stores throughout the United States, as well as online. Founded in 1911 by Dick Blick in Galesburg, Illinois, BLICK, as it's more commonly known, sells various types of art supplies, much like Jerry's Artarama. More info, here. linocut - is a printmaking technique in which a design is carved into a sheet of linoleum with specialized cutting tools. The carved linoleum surface is then inked, and paper is pressed onto it to create a print. Linocut is a relief printing method, similar to woodcut, but it uses linoleum instead of wood as the printing surface. Linocut is popular for its versatility and is used in both fine art and craft applications. Michael's Art Supplies - is a big box art supply store located throughout North America. More info can be found, here. brayer - is a roller with a handle used to apply ink to a printing surface. It typically consists of a cylindrical rubber roller attached to a handle. Printmakers use the brayer to evenly distribute ink over the surface of a printing block, such as linoleum or wood, before pressing it onto paper or another substrate. The brayer ensures a smooth and uniform ink coverage, allowing for clear and consistent impressions during the printing process. Artists can control the amount of ink applied by rolling the brayer over an ink slab or palette before transferring it to the printing surface. Brayers are an essential tool in various printmaking techniques, including linocut, woodcut, and monotype. Bender - is a fictional character in the animated television series "Futurama," created by Matt Groening. Bender is a robot with a humanoid appearance and a distinctive metal body. He is known for his irreverent and sarcastic personality, as well as his love for bending girders and other metal objects. He serves as one of the main characters in the series. David Bull - is a Canadian woodblock printmaker, and educator who lives and works in Japan. His love of mokuhanga has almost singlehandedly promoted the art form around the world. His company, Mokuhankan, has a brick and mortar store in Asakusa, Tōkyō, and online, here. Chapter 9 - The Seacoast In Winter, from the My Solitudes series (2007) Twitch - is a widely-used live streaming platform, initially focused on video game streaming and e-sports, but later expanding to include diverse content like music and art. Streamers create communities around their content, and viewers can engage by subscribing to channels for exclusive benefits. Twitch has become a prominent platform for live content creation, fostering a sense of community among its users. sumi - is a rich black stick or liquid used by artists, calligraphers, and traditional Japanese horimono tattoo artists. Sumi is made from the soot of burnt lamp oil. Sumi is used predominantly in key blocks in traditional mokuhanga and to mix pigments. Pigment Tōkyō conducts a great interview with their chief of pigments, Kei Iwaizumi, about sumi ink, here. shina - is a type of Japanese plywood used in mokuhanga. Not all shina is made equally, buyer beware. McClains Woodblock Print Supply Co. - based in Portland, Oregon, McClain's is the go-to supplier of woodblock print tools in the United States. Their website can be found here. The Unfinished Print interview with Daniel Jasa of McClain's can be found here. Disk Baren - crafted by Akira Kurosaki (1937-2019), is a plastic baren which features a replaceable disc with small surface bumps that ensure uniform pressure application across the paper during the printing process. murasaki baren - is a mid-range mokuhanga baren. “murasaki” meaning “purple” , come in two types of weight (medium and heavy), and two types of sizes (10cm and 12cm). They are a reasonably priced baren. bokashi - is a mokuhanga technique, where the pigment fades from a heavy colour to a softer, broad colour. Made famous by prints designed by Hokusai and Hiroshige, this technique is, for me, the most popular technique utilized by mokuhanga printmakers. There are various types: Ichimoji-bokashi or straight line graduation, used in the above mentioned Hiroshige and Hokusai prints. Ichimoji-mura-bokashi or straight line gradation with uneven edge. Ō-bokashi or wide gradation, Ate-nashi-bokashi or gradation without definition. Futa-iro-bokashi or two tone gradation, and ita-bokashi or softer-edge gradation, where the block is cut in a specific way to achieve this style of gradation. All of these styles of bokashi technique take practice and skill but are very much doable. Laura Boswell ARE - is a renowned British printmaker recognized for her expertise in linocut and woodblock printing. Her artistic repertoire includes creating intricate and detailed prints inspired by nature, landscapes, and everyday life. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Feb 15th Publish Date: Feb 14th Commercial: From the Drake Realty Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Thursday, February 15th, and Happy 69th Birthday to Simpson creator Matt Groening. ***02.15.24 – BIRTHDAY – MATT GROENING*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Technical Issues with Farebox Distort CobbLinc's Ridership and Revenue Data Cobb County to Launch Innovative Transit Pilot Program in South Cobb Cobb Commissioner Challenges Chairwoman's Funding Proposals Amid Trust Issues Plus, Bruce Jenkins sits down with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss microwave meals. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Farebox Malfunctions Skew CobbLinc Data on Riders, Revenue Activists and Cobb County bus drivers have raised concerns about the reliability of the county's bus system ridership data due to faulty fareboxes. Local transit advocate Matt Stigall and Reverend Jeff Jones have voiced their skepticism, supported by four CobbLinc drivers who confirmed the existence of these technical problems. In response to these issues, the Cobb Department of Transportation is set to request a $1.3 million budget allocation for the replacement of the malfunctioning fareboxes. This move acknowledges the technical issues that have been causing data inaccuracies. The timing of these developments coincides with an upcoming vote in Cobb County on November 5. The vote will decide on a proposed 30-year, 1% sales tax (M-SPLOST) designed to fund future transit projects. However, there are ongoing concerns about the current ridership numbers and the financial sustainability of these projects. Bus drivers have reported increased stress levels due to the faulty equipment, which has also led to additional distractions as they are forced to manually count passengers. To address these concerns and improve data accuracy, Cobb DOT director Drew Raessler plans to seek approval for the farebox replacement from the county commission by April 9. STORY 2: Cobb to Implement Transit Pilot Program in South Cobb The Cobb Board of Commissioners has greenlighted an initiative to fund a two-year pilot microtransit program in the southern region of Cobb County. With an approved budget of nearly $3.5 million, the program is designed to boost localized, on-demand transit services. Primarily funded through state and federal grants, the county will be responsible for covering 30% of the total cost. The microtransit program aims to provide curb-to-curb service, connecting riders to other transit services within Cobb County and extending to Atlanta. This initiative is part of a broader plan, the Mobility Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (M-SPLOST), which proposes funding for significant transit improvements. These include the addition of 108 miles of bus rapid transit and arterial rapid transit routes. Despite facing opposition from several commissioners, the microtransit program ultimately received approval. Funding for a potential third year of the program is currently being reviewed by CobbLinc and the Atlanta-Region Transit Link Authority. STORY 3: I Don't Trust You': Cobb Commissioner Fights Chairwoman's Funding Requests During a recent Cobb Board of Commissioners meeting, a heated debate arose between Chairwoman Lisa Cupid and Commissioner Keli Gambrill. The dispute centered around Cupid's proposal to shift $200,000 from her contingency fund to the county's operational budget. This move, which was ultimately passed with a 4-1 vote, is intended to finance policy research and other related expenses. Gambrill accused Cupid of lacking transparency in her actions, raising specific concerns about the expenditure on the "Cupid Loves Cobb Tour." This initiative, led by Cupid, aims to spotlight local businesses. In response to Gambrill's criticisms, Cupid defended the tour as a valuable community event. The exchange emphasized the deepening divisions within the commission. During an hour-long debate, both Cupid and Gambrill exchanged personal barbs, highlighting the ongoing tensions. Break: DRAKE STORY 4: Cobb Elections Establishing New Absentee Ballot Division Cobb County Elections Director, Tate Fall, recently received approval from the Board of Commissioners to establish distinct absentee and registration divisions within her department. This structural change is intended to ease the workload on staff during election periods. To support this reorganization, Fall requested funding for three new full-time positions: a division manager, a communications specialist, and a GIS analyst. However, Commissioner Keli Gambrill expressed reservations about the approval process. Fall underscored the importance of these new roles in ensuring effective voter service and enhancing the organizational structure of the department. The division manager will be responsible for overseeing aspects of election operations, which will enable better focus and efficiency. STORY 5: Kennesaw State University to Offer Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence The University System of Georgia's Board of Regents has given the green light to Kennesaw State University (KSU) to launch a Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence (MSAI) degree program. Set to begin in fall 2024, KSU becomes the second institution in the state to offer a master's degree in AI, aiming to cater to the growing demand for professionals in this field. This interdisciplinary program will be based in the College of Computing and Software Engineering and will build upon the existing AI Concentration within the Computer Science Department. KSU President Kathy Schwaig emphasized that the program is designed to prepare the next generation of AI leaders and address the changing needs of the workforce. The MSAI curriculum will provide an integrated approach to computer science, data science, IT, and software engineering, preparing students for a wide range of roles within the AI sector. Graduates of this program will be well-positioned to enter a field that is projected to have a substantial impact on the global economy by 2030. The program places a strong emphasis on practical experience, offering internships and collaborative projects to equip students with the skills necessary to handle real-world AI challenges. We'll be back in a moment. Break: INGLES 9 STORY 6: LEAH MCGRATH And now here is Bruce Jenkins' conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss microwave meals.
