He previously held senior roles on the Senate Judiciary Committee, served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Justice Department's Office of Legal Policy, clerked for Judge Diane Sykes on the Seventh Circuit, and began his career as a litigator at Kirkland & Ellis. The occasion for doing so is the publication in September of Justice Barrett's new book, Listening to the Law. Anchoring Truths featured an exclusive review of the book by Michael A. Fragoso. Fragoso joins the podcast to discuss his review. Fragoso was not only a student of the justice while in law school at Notre Dame, but also one of the Senate staffers most responsible for her confirmation to the Supreme Court. He brings a fascinating and unique perspective to the path the justice has taken to the Court and the approach to judging she details in the book.Fragoso is currently Partner at Torridon LLC, the boutique law firm founded by former AG Bill Barr. Before joining Torridon, he was chief counsel to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Fragoso was the Leader's primary legal advisor and managed the “last mile” of any legislation touching on the Senate Judiciary Committee. He also repeatedly represented Leader McConnell as counsel of record at the Supreme Court. Leader McConnell said of Fragoso that he's “equally at home in the high-minded philosophical discourse of the legal community and the urgent pragmatism of Congressional dealmaking,” and that he “maintains a firm grasp on the realm of the possible” but “knows which screws to twist.” He observed that Mike “is so exceptionally competent that he often produces from his desk the work that would normally require, literally, teams of outside counsel.”Fragoso previously was chief counsel for nominations and constitutional law for the Senate Judiciary Committee under Ranking Member Chuck Grassley and Chairman Lindsey Graham. During this time, he advised the Senators on two presidential impeachments, ran multiple policy hearings, and managed the confirmation process for over 80 federal judges, including Justice Amy Coney Barrett. Chairman Graham described Fragoso as “a force of nature.” He frequently comments on public affairs, and his writing has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, National Review, and the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy.Fragoso has also served as a law clerk to Judge Diane Sykes of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He is a graduate of Notre Dame Law School and Princeton University.

They dive into recent activity from Brazil's data protection authority (the ANPD), and the history of the LGPD. They also cover how regulatory control of Artificial Intelligence is shaping up. Marcela Mattiuzzo is partner at VMCA in the areas of data protection and competition law. She holds a PhD and a Masters from the University of São Paulo. Previously, she was a Visiting Fellow at the Information Society Project at Yale University. In addition, she worked as advisor and chief of staff to the President of the Brazilian competition authority. Nathalie Fragoso is a partner at VMCA in the area of data protection and technology as well, with a special focus on internet regulation. She is also a Professor at Insper. Previously, she has been the Head of Research on Privacy and Surveillance at InternetLab, and held roles at the Brazilian Institute for the Defense of the Right to Defense, the Criminal Justice Network, and the Luiz Gama Human Rights Clinic at the University of São Paulo Law School. Today, our guest is Zulema Fragoso, school counselor at Nogales High School and the 2023 Arizona School Counselor of the Year. We chat with Zulema about how she began her career in school counseling and what has kept her motivated for the past 16 years while she works with students and families. She explains how she collaborates with other staff and advocates for the role of school counselors. Additionally, Zulema discusses how she continues to build relationships and support students in the community through a student-led University Club at her school. Zulema Fragoso is a school counselor at Nogales High School in Nogales Unified School District #1. She graduated from the University of Arizona with a Master's in School Counseling. Has been working in school counseling since 2006 when she started with GEAR UP. Started her career at Rio Rico High School and then moved to Nogales High School. Has found her passion in helping students obtain post-secondary education in whatever are they pursue. Major accomplishments include: • 2017 Arizona Star Award recipient from College Success Arizona • Arizona School Counselor Association Board of Director (Elected term 2020-2023) • Horatio Alger Field Director for the State of Arizona (2020-Present) Ms. Fragoso enjoys spending time with her family, baking and enjoying her friends.
