Some monsters don't lurk in the dark — they wear a familiar face and sit down at your table. | June 07, 2026 #WDRadio==========HOUR ONE: In the 1960s, Brian Leathley-Andrew investigated and reported on numerous cases of strange objects in the sky, trying to get to the truth of what people were seeing. But when sinister events began happening to him, he knew he had to walk away from his career in Ufology – or the government might make him go away. (UFO Hunter Becomes The Hunted) *** Saying the disappearance of David Glenn Lewis is bizarre doesn't even begin to scratch the surface. What started out as a strange missing person's case would eventually be resolved. But the answer that would come would pose even more questions, proving the adage that “truth is stranger than fiction”. (The Disappearance of David Glenn Lewis) *** The idea of a person changing into a wolf, or shape-shifting into some type of animal or cryptid is mostly confined to the authors of fictional horror. But not all societies and cultures are so quick to label shape-shifting as make-believe. (Shapeshifters And Therianthropes)==========HOUR TWO: “The Gadsden Hotel in Cochise County, Arizona” *** When you hear the name “Transylvania” the immediate image in your mind is probably that of Dracula. But this Romanian town has more creepiness than just the Count's castle – it is also a hot spot for UFO activity and mysterious unexplained happenings. Some even think it could be the location of a portal to another dimension. (Is There A Dimensional Portal in Transylvania?) *** Sightings of unidentified flying objects might seem like a recent phenomena, with most reports occurring in the 20th and 21stcenturies. But UFO sightings go a lot further back in human history – and our ancient ancestors were just as shocked, confused and sometimes terrified, as we are today. (Ancient UFO Sightings)==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: A man goes off for supplies, leaving his wife behind to tend to the home in his absence – but not only did he never come home with the groceries, but a ghost story grew out of it. (The Ghosts of Hunger Valley) *** A UFO incident which we have covered before, but is worth looking at again, is an incident in 1952. This was one of the first admitted entity sightings and probably also one of the earliest close encounters of the third kind investigated officially at the time it took place.==========SOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM TONIGHT'S SHOW:“The Gadsden Hotel in Cochise County, Arizona” from Paranormality Magazine“Is There A Dimensional Portal in Transylvania?” by A. KPFA Theatre Critic Richard Woinsky reviews “Dracula, A Feminist Revenge Fantasy, Really: by Kate Hamill at San Francisco Playhouse through June 27, 2026.           TEXT OF REVIEW According to Google's unreliable AI, nobody beats Dracula as the single most portrayed literary character in film history, with over two hundred direct adaptations, parodies and crossover appearances. You can add the hundreds of theatrical versions floating around as well. Due to a screw-up in the 19th Century, Dracula has always been in the public domain in the United States.

There's also the whole vampire thing too, Vlad Tepes, Anne Rice, the Lost Boys. In 2020, following a flurry of Jane Austen adaptations, playwright Kate Hamill chose to take a bite out of Bram Stoker, and thus we have Dracula, A Feminist Revenge Fantasy, Really … yes, that's the title, which now runs at San Francisco Playhouse through June 27th. This Dracula hews to the beats of the Stoker novel, and at the same time turns it upside down. Dracula is not merely a monster, he's the archetype of toxic masculinity, particularly as muscularly and scarily performed by Johnny Moreno. Renfield, or rather Mrs. Renfield, the fly-eating comic lunatic, played here in an indelible performance by Stacy Ross, is the night's most tragic victim, the rejected female child, yearning for daddy to take her back. After a brief prologue the show opens at the doors of Dracula's castle in Transylvania, where estate agent Jonathan Harker, in a physical performance by James Aaron Oh that runs from torment to slapstick, meets up with the titular vampire, and his vampire wives, who are themselves victims of a misogynist society.

Then we move on to the main story involving Jonathan's Wife Mina, an engaging Sharon Shao, and her friend Lucy, a feisty Nemma Adeni, she's a proto-feminist planning to marry for security, certainly not love. And her fiancé, the staid anti-feminist Dr. Seward of the asylum, a deliberately stiff Josh Schell. And then we meet Dr. Van Helsing, in a cowboy hat, played with gusto by Susi Damilano, and all the elements fall in place. It's to director Bill English's credit that Dracula stays most of the time on a tightrope between Victorian melodrama, horror and camp. The laughter is uneasy, the pathos over the top, and the violence pretty graphic. This Dracula doesn't shy away from its bloody roots. While the subject may be fear and the subtext dealing with the evils of traditional masculinity, this is a fearless production with an impeccable cast. If you don't mind the viscera. Dracula, A Feminist Revenge Fantasy Really by Kate Hamill plays at San Francisco Playhouse through June 27th. For more information, you can go to sfplayhouse.org. I'm Richard Wolinsky on Bay Area theatre for KPFA. The post Review: “Dracula, A Feminist Revenge Fantasy, Really” at San Francisco Playhouse appeared first on KPFA.

The Supervillains are back!  And no, we're not talking about The Guys, though all three of them are in the studio today.  It's time for a catch-up episode on the Regrettable Supervillains segment, aka Jay's Regrettable Segment.  He mustered up a couple of doozies in this episode.  Let us begin.  First up is The Dictator, aka Hitler disguised as the devil.  The Guys aren't sure he's redeemable, but his arch-enemy Mr. Justice has a quirky backstory.  Then comes Dr. Dracula, who neither sees patients, teaches students, or hails from Transylvania.  What's up with this guy?  Not much, as it turns out.  It doesn't take much for Captain Battle and sidekick Hale to overcome him and his Nazi spies dressed like bats.  How a superhero lost an eye might make for a better story.  Before they get to Villain news, though, it's time for Geeks of the Week.  More sad news from Art?  Afraid so, and this time it's Roger Sweet: without him there would be no He-Man movie this year.  And there is great anticipation that none of the guys will be able to see any of 2026's movies in a local Infinity Vision theater - who's ready to sponsor a work trip to Vegas?  Robbie teases the teaser from the new season of Ted Lasso, and also announces (to GOCA listeners, anyway) that there's about to be one less Cook in the kitchen at Apple.  Jay was going to apply for the job, until found out they make computers, not pies.

Remembered Homelands, Divided Lands: Ottoman Legacies and the Roots of Ethnic Conflict

This talk argues that the ethnic conflicts of Southeast Europe are not the result of “ancient hatreds,” but of a specific historical configuration shaped during the Ottoman period. Under Ottoman rule, earlier forms of statehood did not disappear but survived in memory and identity in a kind of “suspended animation,” while at the same time demographic structures were significantly reshaped. Conflict emerged where these two processes intersected. In regions such as Kosovo, Bosnia, Vojvodina, and Transylvania, one group could claim historical precedence based on earlier statehood, while another could claim legitimacy based on later demographic dominance. The Greek–Turkish case shows a similar pattern, where a Byzantine territorial memory and Turkish nationhood collided over territories that became ethnically mixed during the Ottoman rule. The result is a particular type of conflict: not between truth and falsehood, but between competing and internally coherent forms of historical legitimacy — where both sides can plausibly claim that the land is, in different senses, their own. The Real Transylvania: Braşov's Castles and Dark Legends

In this episode of the GoNOMAD Travel Podcast, Senior Writer Chin Liang takes us deep into the heart of Transylvania, a region forever linked to gothic legends, dark forests, and of course… vampires. But as Chin quickly shows us, the real Transylvania—and the real Brașov—is far more fascinating than any fictional horror story. We begin with the scenic train ride from Bucharest, winding through the Carpathian Mountains before arriving in Brașov, a city of 250,000 people that still feels like a perfectly preserved medieval town. In the Old Town's Council Square, Chin notices something unusual: the eyebrow dormer windows that look like hundreds of half‑closed eyes watching from the rooftops. Built by Saxons centuries ago, these “eyes” once ventilated attics—but today they give Brașov its unforgettable, slightly eerie charm.Chin explores the Black Church, the city's most famous landmark, named for the fire that blackened its walls in the 17th century. Inside stands one of the largest pipe organs in Southeastern Europe, with nearly 4,000 pipes still used for concerts. No trip to Brașov is complete without a visit to Bran Castle, the so‑called “Dracula's Castle.” Chin sets the record straight: the castle has nothing to do with vampires. Instead, it was a fortress, then a royal residence, and now a museum perched dramatically on a rocky cliff. Still, its silhouette was close enough to Bram Stoker's imagination that the legend stuck.Chin also recommends pairing your visit with Râșnov Fortress, a 13th‑century hilltop stronghold, and Peleș Palace, a spectacular neo‑Renaissance royal residence filled with secret doors, stained glass, medieval weapons, and ornate rooms that feel straight out of a fairytale.Back in Brașov, Chin samples local dishes like hearty beef stew and creamy roasted eggplant spread. And for the best view in town, he rides the cable car up Mount Tâmpa, where the forests and ridges of Transylvania stretch out in every direction. It's here, above the rooftops and the “watchful eyes,” that the city's resilience and history truly come into focus.Brașov is a place shaped by fire, rebuilt with pride, and wrapped in centuries of myth. And as Chin reminds us, sometimes the real stories are even better than the legends. If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe to the GoNOMAD Travel Podcast and never miss a new journey.Explore more great travel stories at GoNOMAD.com

This week we watch another classic, Young Frankenstein (1974), written by Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks, directed by Mel Brooks. A parody of the classic story of Frankenstein, Young Frankenstein stars Wilder along side Peter Boyle, Madeline Kahn, Marty Feldman and Teri Garr among others. It's an unbelievable cast putting on a comedic clinic. We also finish this month strong with another classic pairing of Gene Wilder with Richard Pryor in See No Evil, Hear No Evil (1989).And if that isn't enough to take in, we also get Marco's reveal for next month. In classic Marco form he realized we were having too much fun lately so made it a point to bring our fun to a grinding halt. What could it be? Tune in to find out.email us at mracfilmclub@gmail.com

Send us a message! Really! This week on the Get More Smarter Podcast, by the time you hear this episode we may be at war with Cuba, or Ecuador, or Transylvania, because there is seemingly no country that the FIFA Peace Prize President won't bomb! Also, the Colorado GOP hasn't won a major election in Colorado in over 12 years, but they've defeated their own party chairperson yet again...and just months before a critical election. Then, if you thought International Women's Day could be the last bastion of bipartisanship in Colorado politics, you'd be wrong! We also have some more 2026 updates as caucuses turn to assemblies and assemblies turn to conventions and these processes get neither more democratic nor less inscrutable to decide who actual voters get to vote for. But first, in our third and final installment of “who wants to be the CD8 Democratic Nominee, we've got Evan Munsing on the show to tell us why Democratic Primary voters should pick him to run against our 8th favorite member of Congress from Colorado this November. That's it for this episode! If you loved watching and/or listening to it as much as we loved recording it, you can thank us by subscribing to the pod wherever you listen, following us over on New Old Twitter AKA Bluesky, subscribing to our shiny new channel on YouTube, smashing that subscribe button on our Substack, and sharing this episode with your friends, your enemies, and your 8th favorite Member of Congress from Colorado! In this spine-tingling episode, travel writer and award-winning author Nick Jubber joins Paul Bavill to rage against the myth that vampires were born in Transylvania. From Serbian graveyards and Croatian legends to the age of Enlightenment and Hammer Horror, Nick traces how fear, politics, and imagination turned the undead into one of history's most enduring monsters. Discover how the printing press helped spread vampire hysteria, how priests profited from graveyard rituals, and why monsters mirror humanity's deepest desires and darkest fears.Whether you're a folklore fan or just love a good supernatural tale, this episode will have you rethinking everything you thought you knew about the vampire myth.

At that time the trail was 1400km but at the time of this interview covers just on 1600km in distance. He's not the scion of a wealthy empire in Gotham City, he's the son of a public school teacher who he experienced the unimaginable horror of random gun violence as a child, changing the trajectory of his life forever. With no limitless resources, no billions to fund him, no mansion, and no butler to care for him, Bruce has shaped himself into an entirely different breed of Batman, one that is equal parts brain and brawn, who exists exclusively in the grittiest and most underserved parts of Gotham with no high society mask to fall back on.
