“Enduring night. A spectre of death. He spreads his shadow, and he's coming.” An intertitle from a 1922 film reads: “Nosferatu. Does this word not sound like the deathbird calling your name at midnight? Beware you never say it—for then the pictures of life will fade to shadows, haunting dreams will climb forth from your heart and feed on your blood.” This week, we continue our seventh annual Freaky Film Festival with a gothic horror remake. #WDRadio WEEK OF OCTOBER 05,2025 | For centuries, Transylvania has harbored a mystery far stranger than vampires—documented UFO sightings dating back to 1595, including a Romanian fighter jet's confirmed collision with four unidentified objects in 2007. From medieval chronicles to modern military reports, Europe's most mysterious region has been watching the skies, but why have the skies been watching back?==========HOUR ONE: “The Gadsden Hotel in Cochise County, Arizona” *** When you hear the name “Transylvania” the immediate image in your mind is probably that of Dracula. But this Romanian town has more creepiness than just the Count's castle – it is also a hot spot for UFO activity and mysterious unexplained happenings. Some even think it could be the location of a portal to another dimension. (Is There A Dimensional Portal in Transylvania?) *** Sightings of unidentified flying objects might seem like a recent phenomena, with most reports occurring in the 20th and 21stcenturies. But UFO sightings go a lot further back in human history – and our ancient ancestors were just as shocked, confused and sometimes terrified, as we are today. (Ancient UFO Sightings)==========HOUR TWO: In the 1960s, Brian Leathley-Andrew investigated and reported on numerous cases of strange objects in the sky, trying to get to the truth of what people were seeing. But when sinister events began happening to him, he knew he had to walk away from his career in Ufology – or the government might make him go away. (UFO Hunter Becomes The Hunted) *** Saying the disappearance of David Glenn Lewis is bizarre doesn't even begin to scratch the surface. What started out as a strange missing person's case would eventually be resolved. But the answer that would come would pose even more questions, proving the adage that “truth is stranger than fiction”. (The Disappearance of David Glenn Lewis) *** The idea of a person changing into a wolf, or shape-shifting into some type of animal or cryptid is mostly confined to the authors of fictional horror. But not all societies and cultures are so quick to label shape-shifting as make-believe. (Shapeshifters And Therianthropes)==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: A man goes off for supplies, leaving his wife behind to tend to the home in his absence – but not only did he never come home with the groceries, but a ghost story grew out of it. (The Ghosts of Hunger Valley) *** A UFO incident which we have covered before, but is worth looking at again, is an incident in 1952. This was one of the first admitted entity sightings and probably also one of the earliest close encounters of the third kind investigated officially at the time it took place.==========SOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM TONIGHT'S SHOW:“The Gadsden Hotel in Cochise County, Arizona” from Paranormality Magazine“Is There A Dimensional Portal in Transylvania?” by A. This week the hosts begin a month of classic Universal monster movies beginning with Dracula (1931). From wiki: "Dracula is a 1931 American pre-Code vampire film directed and co-produced by Tod Browning from a screenplay written by Garrett Fort and starring Bela Lugosi in the title role. It is based on the stage play Dracula by Hamilton Deane and John L. Balderston, which in turn is adapted from the 1897 novel Dracula by Bram Stoker.[3] Lugosi portrays Count Dracula, a vampire who emigrates from Transylvania to England and preys upon the blood of living victims, including a young man's fiancée."Also discussed: spiders, Sparks, transcendental meditation, One Battle After Another, Thomas Pynchon, Meiko Kaji films, and more. The turn of the century was an interesting time to be alive. You had the doomsdayers who were convinced some bug called Y2K was going to wipe out the planet via technological genocide, and others who were convinced the world was going to come to a screeching halt at the stroke of midnight. For every theory was a counter theory, to the point where people were being driven to drink just to maintain some semblance of sanity.Into the world was born an anthemic tune that was just good enough to divert people's attention away from all of the fear and uncertainty in the world and allow us to refocus on the one thing that will never let us down.Music.So when three young upstarts from Adelaide started a sonic movement that bucked the growing tide of uncertainty, its wings spanned the entire world, with people as far away as Transylvania heard running through the streets and yelling four simple words that, when put together, became the voice of a generation. The voice your mother warned you about. The voice of change. I can still picture myself screaming above the live band in those times, shouting those same four words that have now become as much a part of music folklore as Iron Maiden and those that came before or after them. Those words?Turn That Shit Up. And the band responsible?Adelaide's Testeagles, that's who. After putting out just the one sensational metal/indie rock album laced with electronic beats and samples called Non Comprehendus, Testeagles vanished into the abyss. Job done. Order restored.Over the years, there have been many calls for Testeagles to return and finish what they had started, most of which fell on deaf ears until the band was coaxed out of retirement and onto the stage of last year's Froth & Fury Festival. The response was so overwhelmingly powerful and positive, it was only a matter of time before that one-off comeback became a fully fledged reunion, and the band did not disappoint, recently bowing to public demand by announcing a national tour in celebration of 25 years since the world collectively turned their shit up.Returning to our early days of musical indulgence, HEAVY sat down for an entertaining chat with Testeagles drummer "Ady" Matt to fill in the many blanks. We start by asking how rehearsals are going with the first show only weeks away."We played a show last year for the first time in like 20 years or something ridiculous, and that was a nightmare trying to get ready for," Ady laughed. "We had our doubts because we hadn't played properly for a really long time, but this time around we've kept it together ever since we did that one-off show. And we've been jamming. We built this really cool rehearsal space so we get to do this all day, every day, and it's got us really firing."With Testeagles having large electronic components to their music, we ask Ady how their live show has had to change in order to keep up with advances in the music industry."We weren't sure if we should just do exactly the same as what we used to, or if we should spice it up a little," he admitted. "We've ended up making a few changes - mainly due to all the different technology available - and it gives you all these ideas. We sat down and had a chat about it together, and thought about back in the day, and how it would sound now if we never stopped. We were always looking for the latest type of equipment and the latest tricks and things to do. I guess that's how we justify changing now, or thinking if we never got out of it, we would be completely different now to what we were then. So we've embraced some new technology, which is letting us do some extra things. I think it's a way better show now than we ever could have done back in the day, and it makes it probably more entertaining and interesting."In the full interview, Ady conveyed confidence in the band's preparations for the tour after a long hiatus, despite the challenges of relearning older songs and accommodating the health needs of their bass player, Dave. He reflected on the band's musical journey since their formation in 1994, noting their eclectic influences ranging from rock to electronic music. He recounted the unexpected success of their track Turn That Shit Up, which propelled Testeagles into the spotlight, while also revealing some initial doubts about their music's reception before it was released. As the tour approaches, Ady expressed a mix of excitement and anxiety about performing as the main act, emphasising the importance of nostalgia for fans by prioritising classic songs in the set list. The conversation also touched on the eclectic blending of genres at Testeagles disposal and how they get the balance right in the creative process, and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Here, his resilience is tested in an encounter that would shape Hungarian history forever. In this 1on1, we speak to the cast and producer of the epic series as they tell us about bringing history to life and elevating strong women.Rise of the Raven premieres on CBC Gem on Friday, September 19th, 2025.

Mamuwalde Unchained: William Crain's Blacula Well Boys & Girls, this week Mr. Chavez & I begin our yearly dive into Horror, returning to the genre with a search for lesser-known, less-discussed titles in the Vampire sub-genre. Over the next two months we will be traveling to Korea, Canada, the American Southwest, a post-apocalyptic Japan, and New Zealand. This week we start in Transylvania and travel to Los Angeles with 1972s Blaxploitation Classic, Blacula. A film with a mixed reputation, there certainly is a great deal to admire in William Crain's re-imagining of the Dracula legend. One of the most powerful aspect is the performance of its lead actor William Marshall. Much of what we do here is an examination of cinema in the popular culture, social history, and an embracing of the "what-if's" - There are quite a few that this film raises. Take a listen and let us know what you think. As always, we can be reached at gondoramos@yahoo.com - Our Continued Thanks. Globalization is dying, maybe even dead. Borders are back, baby. That's the message in Jonn Elledge's sparkling Brief History of the World in 47 Borders. In this romp around world history , Elledge introduces us to 47 of the world's oddest borders including particularly weird ones in Detroit, Kaliningrad and Bolivia. So should be celebrating or mourning the rebirth of the border? Elledge is in mourning. A self-described progressive who grew up on Star Trek dreams of planetary unity, he sees nationalism's resurgence since 2016 as "quite a bad thing." He blames economic stagnation—when the pie stops growing, generous approaches to migration and distribution become much harder to sustain. I'm more sanguine. Whatever globalist bureaucrats at the UN or EU promised us, borders were never going away. As a species, we humans are agoraphobic. The Trekkies are wrong. The claustrophobia of the border is what gives us our sense of space. 1. Borders are having a political moment - The "liberal hegemony" that promised borderless globalization has been collapsing since 2016 (Brexit, Trump), making nationalism and territorial division the dominant political force again.2. Economic stagnation drives border obsession - When economies aren't growing and people aren't getting richer, generous policies on migration and wealth distribution become much harder to sustain politically.3. Maps shape leaders' minds - Trump's fixation on his Oval Office Ukraine map shows how visual representations of territory directly influence foreign policy decisions and geopolitical thinking.4. Most "historic" borders are recent inventions - What we assume are natural, ancient boundaries (like the Berlin Wall, Bangladesh, or even Germany's division) are often just decades old, showing how arbitrary our sense of "normal" geography really is.5. Borders create unexpected consequences - From Bolivia maintaining a navy despite being landlocked to Detroit's expansion bankrupting the city, where you draw lines has profound, often unintended effects on politics, economics, and culture for generations.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. Justin Timberlake BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.Justin Timberlake has dominated headlines the past few days after revealing in a heartfelt July 31 Instagram statement that he's been battling Lyme disease. According to AOL, Timberlake described his struggle as relentlessly debilitating, saying the diagnosis finally explained the bouts of nerve pain, crushing fatigue, and illness he endured on stage during his recently wrapped Forget Tomorrow World Tour. The pop icon admitted he considered canceling the tour more than once but ultimately pressed on, crediting the pure joy he gets from performing as greater than the stress on his body. As he opened up about his condition, Timberlake acknowledged speculation around his recent live appearances, particularly the noticeably low-energy performances that drew bewildered responses from concert goers and social media. Viral TikToks surfaced showing him barely singing in Transylvania, prompting widespread fan concern and a wave of commentary online. TwistedSifter dryly noted he “phoned in” the set, with clips showing Timberlake letting the crowd fill in lyrics while he swayed passively, fueling questions regarding his health and commitment on stage. His statement marks a rare public transparency from Timberlake, a notoriously private star, and the tone strongly suggested this might have been his last big tour, or at least the end of arena-scale performances for now. He capped the announcement by thanking fans, his touring crew, and especially his wife Jessica Biel and their children for “unconditional love,” saying he's unsure what the future holds for his live shows. The news trended widely on X and Instagram, with #JustinTimberlakeHealth one of the top searches. In business news, Finance Monthly and Scottish Sun report Timberlake is expanding his portfolio, partnering with Tiger Woods to launch a sports bar and cinema called T-Squared Social in St Andrews, Scotland, coming this fall after a successful launch in New York. His recent real estate play—offloading a massive Tennessee estate—has also made the property news pages. Meanwhile, Billboard and Rolling Stone confirmed Timberlake as a headliner for the 2025 BottleRock festival, though it remains unknown whether his diagnosis will impact future commitments.Coverage has focused on the biographical weight of his health revelation, widely seen as a turning point for one of pop's most resilient entertainers. Timberlake's candidness has drawn empathy from the music world and fans alike. Whatever comes next, his honesty in the face of adversity is cementing a new chapter in a superstar legacy.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOta

Everyone knows about America's 13 original colonies… but did you know there was almost a 14th? In 1775, a private land deal known as The Transylvania Purchase sought to create a brand-new colony in the rugged mountains where Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee meet. Frontiersman Daniel Boone carved the Wilderness Road through the Cumberland Gap, opening America's first true gateway to the West. But the plan was tangled in conflict with Indigenous nations, colonial governments, and the Revolution itself. In this episode of Parkography, Jason explores the rise and fall of the Colony of Transylvania, the battles that defined it, and how the Cumberland Gap went from a dangerous frontier to a National Historical Park that tells the story of America's earliest westward expansion. Twenty years ago, Kimberly Haley Coleman was stuck abroad on business weekends, wanting to volunteer but finding nothing meaningful to do. So she created her own opportunities—and Globe Aware was born. Today, Globe Aware connects volunteers with communities in 21 countries through week-long service projects. We're talking about real work: installing concrete floors in Guatemala, assembling wheelchairs in Cambodia, building stoves that actually vent smoke out of homes. In our conversation, Kimberly shared something that didn't surprise me. Volunteers consistently tell her they received more from the experience than they gave. There's something about showing up, working alongside families, and seeing their daily reality that writing a check simply can't replicate. These aren't luxury trips. You're staying in modest accommodations, eating local food, and getting your hands dirty. But families come home fundamentally changed in how they see the world. As Kimberly puts it, "There's no check you can write that can do that to a kid's brain." If you've been thinking about meaningful travel or want to show your family a bigger world, this episode offers a completely different way to think about vacation time. You could even revisit a few places through new eyes and opportunities. Think Machu Picchu, Transylvania, Thailand, Cuba, Mexico, Vietnam, the Philippines, and the Galapagos Islands. What does Planet of the Apes and a Van Helsing analog traveling to Transylvania have in common with titanium orgy werewolves and bad mod music? Episode 990- Jason Interviews Brian Gonsar DRACULA'S BRUNCH CLUBDracula's Brunch Club graphic novel: Have you ever wondered how vampires got their taste for blood? In Dracula's Brunch Club, it all started with a crimson-red donut, dripping and oozing with spooky secrets—I mean, jelly. Dripping and oozing with non-spooky-tasting JELLY. Get ready to sink your fangs into the hilarious new graphic novel Blood, treachery, and humor from two promising newcomers not enough? Count Dracula is not your average vampire. Well, sure, he's undead, hates garlic, and will burn up in sunlight––but unlike other vampires, he has a knack for baking. And it's his brunch club's famous blood-orange-jelly donuts that give his fellow vampires the energy source they need to live forever. But when Transylvania experiences a mysterious jelly shortage, it allows his nemesis, Constantine, to swoop in and steal the brunch club—and the vampires' loyalty—from Dracula. But it's not just jelly donuts at stake. When townsfolk start to go missing, Dracula suspects Constantine has far more sinister motives lurking that could threaten everything vampires and humans have worked for. With the help of his chef and human friend, Elena, Dracula must find a new energy source before every vampire and human turns on him and he loses his coveted brunch club forever.Buy It: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Draculas-Brunch-Club/Brian-Gonsar/9781637158401Theme Songs by Drew: Donuts and Darkness & Jelly DreamsLike & Subscribe on Youtube www.youtube.com/@comicsforfunandprofit5331Patreon https://www.patreon.com/comicsfunprofit Merch https://comicsfunprofit.threadless.comYour Support Keeps Our Show Going On Our Way to a Thousand EpisodesDonate Here https://bit.ly/36s7YeLAll the C4FaP links you could ever need https://beacons.ai/comicsfunprofit Listen To the Episode Here: https://comcsforfunandprofit.podomatic.com/

Today I'm so pleased to welcome back someone who you all loved the first time around on the podcast - the brilliant author and travel writer, Monisha Rajesh. Her passion for trains, and for the way rail travel slows you down and opens you up to new worlds, was just infectious. And I'm so excited to say that she's back with a gorgeous new book called Moonlight Express, which takes us deep into the magical world of sleeper trains. In this new adventure, Monisha journeys across Europe, the Americas and beyond, trading airports for railway platforms and following moonlit tracks through some of the most cinematic landscapes on Earth, which we have the pleasure of chatting about today. From the soft snow and candlelit calm of the Norwegian night trains to the fairy-tale villages of Transylvania, glimpsed at sunrise through the window of a creaky couchette on the Dacia Express. Or to the pastel-painted streets of Savannah, Georgia, in the US, reached on Amtrak's Silver Meteor. She takes us high into the Andes too, aboard the luxurious Belmond Andean Explorer from Cusco to Arequipa, where the train carves through deserts and towering peaks, so close to everyday life you feel like you could touch it. And back in Britain, she celebrates her mum's 70th aboard the Royal Scotsman, sipping whisky in the observation car as the Highlands go past. She reminds us what makes train travel so unique: the romance, the community, and the chance to simply sit by the window and watch the world roll by.Destination Recap: Oslo to trondheim, Trondheim to Buda, NorwayTransylvania, Romania FinlandPeru - Belmond Andean Explorer - Cusco to ArequipaBelmond Royal Scotsman Caledonia Sleeper Train, London to Edinburgh Cornish Riviera trainSilver Meteor - Orlando, Florida to Savannah, GeorgiaSavannah, Georgia, USAMoonlight Express: Around the World by Night Train by Monisha Rajesh is published by Bloomsbury (28 August). With thanks to Airbnb for their support of today's episode. Thanks so much for listening today. America is littered with lots of almost-states, which very nearly joined the Union in their own right, but for some reason did not. In today's episode we cover Vandalia, Transylvania, Westylvania, Franklin, and Nickajack. By investigating these almost-states, we delve into constitutional law on matters of succession, and tap into a centuries-old conflict between populist hillbillies and English lordlings. www.ThePoliticalOrphanage.com
