This week, we're diving into a fascinating conversation that bridges the worlds of high school sports and business leadership. I'm thrilled to welcome St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame 2024 Jimmy Dunn High School Soccer Coach of the Year David Aronberg of Ladue High School to the podcast. Coach Aronberg's boys team just clinched the State Class 3 championship in November 2024—a incredible achievement that speaks volumes about his leadership and the culture he's built within his program. But what makes this story even more compelling is how his approach to coaching mirrors the challenges businesses face every day: building a strong culture, developing leaders, onboarding new talent, and sustaining success in the face of constant change. Full disclosure, I'm a big fan of Coach Aronberg. Not only is my 15 year old son, Eliot, a member of state championship squad, but my youngest, Emerson, is a student in Coach's six grade social studies class. So I've seen firsthand how he cultivates leadership in young athletes and students and challenges them to be their best selves. In our first season of the podcast, we interviewed author Michael Zigarelli, who wrote  a book called The Messiah Method: The 7 Disciplines of the Winningest College Soccer Program in America. The book outlined the tremendous success of Messiah College soccer, where between 2000 and 2010 the mens and women's teams had won 11 national titles and been to 17 Final Fours between them. Ever since then, we have wanted to bring onto the podcast the architect of that dynasty Dave Brandt. Today we get to do that. In 24 seasons as a college head coach, including stints at Messiah, the US Naval Academy, Hope College and Bucknell, Dave Brandt has won over 360 games. In 12 years at Messiah, his teams compiled a 246-25-14 (.888) record, won six Division III national championships and made eight Final Four appearances. Brandt was a four-time National Coach of the Year honoree at Messiah, and five of his student-athletes earned National Player of the Year honors. He then moved on to the Naval Academy where he turned around a program and won the Patriot League as the first undefeated, untied conference champion in league history. After a short stint in professional soccer with the Pittsburg Riverhounds, he returned to college coaching at Hope College in MI where he again turned around a losing program and led them to an NCAA appearance and conference championship. This past Fall he led Bucknell to the Patriot League title and an NCAA tournament bid. In our chat today, Dave unpacks the core principles of all the winning programs he has built, how passion and intentionality drive his programs, the secrets to having standards not rules, the value of love in your coaching, and so much more. You will want a notebook for this one! Dan Blank didn't plan to be a soccer coach or a best-selling author. But after stumbling into coaching almost by accident, Blank began thinking about how written resources could help coaches and players, alike, play the game of soccer with a bit more acumen. In 2012, when self-publishing had become more common, Blanks wrote and published Soccer IQ: Things That Smart Players Do. Sales were initially modest, but some well placed promotion launched Soccer IQ onto the bestsellers list and made it one of the most purchased soccer books in America. Blank's title underscored a growing wave of both soccer literature as well as the beginning of other self-published resources about the game, such as training courses and videos. With an abundance of information available for Americans to access and consume, there were new ways to get smart and catch up on a game historically more accessible in other countries. Blank joined Founding Futbol to talk about how he came to write Soccer IQ, discuss some of his other titles, and more. Founding Futbol is a year-long exploration of the critical moments that have led to soccer's emerging popularity in America. Visit our website for more information: FoundingFutbol.com. Is tribalism destroying democracy? According to cultural psychologist Michael Morris of Columbia University, just the opposite may be the case. As he explains in his new book, Tribal, our tribal instincts can also be the source of our success--in politics, society, business, and even professional sports. Listen as Morris and EconTalk's Russ Roberts discuss real examples of how smart leaders pulled tribal levers to improve performance, solve stubborn problems, and create positive change.
