Today on the podcast are the members of Braid talking about their 25th Anniversary and tour for Frame & Canvas. I thought it'd be funny to interview them in order asking similar questions about the album, their feelings on resisting this record, the remixing of the album from J Robbins, and touring. What's amazing is everyone gave different answers and memories. Plus, the secret gem of the episode is worth listening through the whole thing I promise you. I had each person describe the other band members in one word. The answers they give are insightful, sweet, and hilarious. First up is Todd Bell, then Bob Nanna, Chris Broach, then finishing up with Damon Atkinson. What's amazing listening back to these interviews is how different everyone is but how they need a vote of 4 to decide anything as Braid. They're back, ready to rock again. Lastly, please stay for Damon's stories which had me laughing and a great set closer to the episodes. We hadn't spoken before for the pod, so we had a little extra time to chat. This was an absolute blast to do and put together. Thanks to Polyvinyl, Tito and the dudes for being game to have some fun.
Today's episode is an interview with Bob Nanna and Chris Broach of the massively influential '90s emo band Braid, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of their classic 1998 album 'Frame & Canvas.' Bob and Chris discuss their own separate musical upbringings, their early days in the Chicago area scene, landing on the classic Braid sound, recording 'Frame & Canvas' with one of their musical heroes, J. Robbins of Jawbox, the emo explosion of the 2000s, the emo revival of the 2010s, and much more. !!!Trigger Warning!!! This week it is my distinct honor to unpack the last 2 years in the life of Mid-West "EmoCore" legend, Chris Broach. We examine his time in recovery, the pandemic, his battle with health issues ( to put it mildly), family, and creating music during/despite it all. We uncover our mutual existential dread, having been born mere weeks apart, and the impetus of his interest in Punk. We go over the birth of Braid, a childhood love of Hip Hop, and find myriad avenues to relate to one another. An absolute MUST HEAR.
This is a repost of my interview with Chris Broach that I did back in 2019 and here is what we chatted about: The band not having a digestible sound Skating with the dudes from Cap'n Jazz when they were in High School Teaching himself how to play guitar based on what he thought sounded good How he joined the band Chicago pride Touring a lot burning out the band The Actuality of Thought DVD Frame and Canvas (this part is sick) Damon's drumming And a ton more Go check out Chris' newer music from SNST and his solo stuff. If you market aggressively on Instagram Stories and want custom stickers then go here to get custom stickers or just email mike@drive80.com and I can send you samples. Since the mid nineties, Chris Broach has brought joy to thousands of not more. With a new full length coming in May, Broach now joined by his wife Sonja are ready to deliver SNST to a broader audience without any compromise to do so. Braid is an American emo band from Champaign, Illinois, formed in 1993. Following several early line-up changes, the band eventually settled on Bob, Todd, Chris and Damon. In 1998 the group released their third album, Frame & Canvas, to critical acclaim and is considered a staple of the late 90's emo movement. Despite Frame & Canvas's success, Braid disbanded in 1999. This lead to the formations of Hey Mercedes and Chris would continue with The Firebird Band which was previously a side project. The band reunited shortly from June to August 2004, before disbanding again. In 2011, Braid reunited permanently, playing their 600th show and releasing a new album, No Coast. I reached out to their FB page to see if they’d like to chat and got in touch with Chris Broach, he was down to talk and here’s what we chatted about: The band not having a digestible sound Skating with the dudes from Cap’n Jazz when they were in High School Teaching himself how to play guitar based on what he thought sounded good How he joined the band Chicago pride Touring a lot burning out the band The Actuality of Thought DVD Frame and Canvas (this part is sick) Damon’s drumming And a ton more Go check out Chris' newer music from SNST and his solo stuff. Chapter 133: "1998 Looked Great" ...as read by Bob Nanna, Chris Broach, Todd Bell, Damon Atkinson, Chris Bickert, Matt Lunsford and J Robbins (whew!) If you know this show then you probably know that Bryan and I are Braid fans. (That's Bob singing the theme song at the end.) Well back on April 7th, 1998 Braid had an album released on Polyvinyl Records called "Frame And Canvas". This is an important album to me and quite a few people, seeing on how this makes the top indie/emo albums of all time list again and again. I was able to assemble all four members of Braid, their roadie Bicks, Matt Lunsford (head of Polyvinyl) and J Robbins of Jawbox (produced and mixed) all together under one podcast roof to discuss this album. I hope you enjoy this. And again, this would not have been glued together without the wizardry of Bryan Patton. Thanks to everyone involved. If you like this, hang in there. There were lots of leftovers from this huge seven-course meal. https://www.facebook.com/braidcentral/ Chapter 133 Music: Every song from Frame And Canvas. Duh. Our podcast is recorded live at Third City Sound in Downtown Joliet on the third floor above Chicago Street Pub. We've met so many great people from all walks of life at The Pub. With venues like The Forge close by, I've even run into some of my musical idols. We thought it would be a great idea to start documenting all of the, shall I say, adventures at Chicago Street Pub. It seemed like a good idea to start talking about the efforts of people outside of our friend circle, too. There have been a lot of good times had, and new friends made. We hope you'll like listening to us discover the hidden gems in our neighborhoods.Episode 32 features Chris Broach of Braid, and currently of SNST(Sunset). We convinced Chris to perform a rare solo acoustic performance from of two SNST songs. The interview hits a pretty wide variety of topics, so there's a little somethin' for everyone. Chris came on the podcast to promote a show at Third City Sound on Saturday December 9th, 2017. Great friends of ours The Vadevileins and Ovef Ow are on the bill, as well. Hopefully you'll read this and make it out. If you're reading this after that date let this serve as a time capsule.
