This week's story is the bizarre true tale of Leila Davidson Hansell, known as "The Sunshine Woman," and the controversy surrounding her final resting place in Hendersonville, NC.Leila's final wish upon her death in 1915 was to be buried above ground in a unique mausoleum topped with 147 squares of prism glass, designed to let the sun shine down on her remains. For over two decades, her glass-topped tomb became a must-see tourist attraction, fueled by a 1926 newspaper article that confirmed the skeleton could, indeed, be seen through the glass, contrary to the designer's adamant denials. Don't miss a single one of our Stories of Appalachia! This week on Hafta, Newslaundry's Abhinandan Sekhri, Manisha Pande and Jayashree Arunachalam are joined by journalist and entrepreneur Govindraj Ethiraj. The discussion opens up with the recently concluded World Economic Forum held in Davos. Abhinandan sharply questions the performative nature of Indian participation at the forum, criticising chief ministers for announcing Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Indian companies on foreign soil. “We are funding the circus,” Jayashree remarks bluntly, calling Davos a “clown show” driven by optics rather than outcomes.Govindraj also agrees that announcing MoUs, especially with Indian firms, is a misallocation of time and attention, given how the WEF offers leaders “an opportunity to gauge the temperature of what is happening in the world order right now”. The discussion also touches on the much-touted India-EU free trade agreement, which European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen described as the “mother of all deals”. Govindraj, however, tempers expectations, warning that free trade agreements are often narrow and slow-moving. “The first bottle of cheaper Scotch won't arrive tomorrow – it could take five years,” he quips. He further adds, “The red lines for India are clearly dairy and agricultural products… You can't do something which immediately jeopardises your farming lobby. So, if you take away agriculture and cheese, what's left now?”From Davos, the conversation shifts to press freedom in Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking on the recent summonses sent national media reporters by the J&K Police, Manisha remarks, “Over the last one year, at least 25 journalists have been summoned by the J&K Police… anything at all can just land you in a police station being questioned, because it's ‘public disorder', you're causing ‘public safety' disorder.”Drawing a contrast between reporters in New Delhi and Kashmir, Abhinandan says, “It's very difficult for someone in J&K to tough it out because there is no insulation. Delhi provides great insulation; that's why those headquartered in Delhi have to step up and protect their reporters who are not in Delhi. This and a lot more. On October 21, 1836, crowds lined the docks of Saint John, New Brunswick, to watch the steamship Royal Tar depart for Portland, Maine - this time carrying an entire circus. Cages filled with exotic birds, snakes, lions and a tiger rolled on board, along with horses, camels and the star attraction: Mogul, a massive Asian elephant, who took his place on the upper deck. Four days later, after battling fierce storms, the ship caught fire, killing many on board. In desperation, some animals were forced into the icy waters of Penobscot Bay, while others perished in their cages. My guest is Jane Parks Gardner, author of The Wreck of the Circus Ship Royal Tar: Tragedy in Penobscot Bay. She shares details on the disaster, and its impact on Maine's maritime history. The video available to the public clearly shows her vehicle going towards and swiping the ICE official who had to fire in self-defense. However, if you are on the left side of politics you're seeing something different. In this tragic moment we see democrat officials use this moment to further divide the American public with talk of "us vs them". In this episode I read the first chapter of the Paradoxes of Juggling by Michael Staroseletsky, a book published by NDjuggling.com which of course is run by Niels Duinker who was a guest on the podcast back in episode 135. If you are interested in ways to view the world through a craft this is a book you should check out. If you're interested in advanced practice and the technique of juggling this is a great read. It is also part of the brand new Compendium of Soviet Juggling Wisdom. What if a juggling act is more than patterns in the air—what if it's a blueprint for freedom, identity, and the courage to keep going when you drop? We dive into a lyrical reading from Michael Staroseletsky's The Paradoxes of Juggling and unpack why this art form refuses shortcuts and demands honesty. From the first image of balls moving like “living creatures” to the stubborn physics of clubs that won't always obey, we sit with the tension between intention and reality and show how mastery grows inside that friction.Staroseletsky's core claim is perhaps that the trick is both the vehicle and the destination. Juggling isn't just technique polished to shine; it's an inner practice that widens your tolerance for error and refines your timing until correction feels effortless. We explore the paradox that to juggle more, you must accept more—more variables, more variance, and more responsibility for recovery. We also talk about persona and truth onstage. Circus artists often “play themselves,” so the work only lands when the human behind the pattern is vivid and honest. Props aren't passive; the moment an object leaves your hand, it asserts its own will, and the act becomes a dialogue you can see—rhythm as visible music, choreography in space, and story told through catches and drops. If Staroseletsky's vision resonates, you'll find the book at ndjuggling.com alongside other gems for artists, jugglers, and curious minds. Listen, reflect, and tell us what craft is teaching you about time, space, and self. The Brown University shooting gave us an example of a botched investigation. Failure to call it a terrorist act prevents the FBI from investigating and leaves it to the local municipalities to investigate, who have limited resources. First, they had no witnesses and could not find the shooter. Probably because they sent everyone home before asking questions. Then there was a lack of camera footage. The suspected shooter ended up dead, like many others. The first installment of the Epstein files showed us nothing new. The DOJ disclosed a short version of the files after redactions along with information claiming the FBI still has national security reasons for witholding much of it. On a chilly evening in early February 2010, a group of friends gathered around the table at a restaurant in a French ski resort. They had been out on the slopes all day and were warming up with mulled wine by the fire. A cell phone buzzed, and one of the friends looked down and frowned. They excused themselves and stepped away from the table to talk. When they came back, they were pale and their hands were shaking. The others asked what was wrong, but they just shook their head and grabbed their coat. They had to leave, right now. Someone they cared about very much needed their help. For 100s more stories like this one, check out my YouTube channel just called "MrBallen" -- https://www.youtube.com/c/MrBallenIf you want to reach out to me, contact me on Instagram, Twitter or any other major social media platform, my username on all of them is @MrBallen Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The Brown University shooting gave an example of a botched investigation. Failure to call it a terrorist act prevents the FBI from investigating and leaves it to the local municipalities to investigate, in which has limited resources. At first they had no witnesses and could not find the shooter. Probably because they sent everyone home before asking questions. Then they had a lack of cameras to give any substantial information. The shooter later was suspected and ended up dead, like many others. The Epsteing files first installment of releases showed us nothing much. The DOJ disclosed a short version of files after redacted pages and information claiming the FBI still has national security reasons for witholding much of it. Protection of the high profile politicians.

Trump gave his primetime speech and of course the left scoffs so it's up to America to decide. The Conservative Circus gives its own reaction to the President's speech, and the Circus audience don't see eye to eye with James T. and Producer Aaron. The Australian government's reaction the Bondi Beach shooting is to enact gun control and limit free speech! It seems the Aussie citizens are waking up to the nonsensical policies of their county's liberal wing government. Plus, we review the greatest soul singers and songs of all time, Democrats defend children mutilations, Arizona schools closing and enrollments are down, and the Minneapolis Police Chief compares Muslims to the Nativity story. Riley Gaines is joined by Senator John Kennedy as they react to a series of jaw-dropping clips from Texas' own Jasmine Crockett, including her famous claim that “committing a crime doesn't make you a criminal.” Kennedy's reactions are instant classics: sharp, unfiltered, and delivered with the kind of dry humor that makes the insanity almost bearable. Together, they walk through Crockett's wildest campaign moments and the deeper problem underneath them: a political culture that treats outrage as strategy and common sense as optional. Kennedy also shares stories behind his #1 bestselling book and why he believes Americans are starving for leaders who still speak plainly. A conversation full of laughter, blunt truth, and a reminder that sometimes the best way to expose the circus… is simply to let it speak for itself. Learn more about your ad choices.
