Reporters swarmed. Crowds gathered. State officials arrived on scene. People were hungry for information about the trapped cave explorer, Floyd Collins. They wanted to rescue the man trapped 55 feet below the earth's surface. But a collapse halted any further attempts through Sand Cave.Locals and state experts disagreed on the best path forward. And as they argued, hope dwindled.Remember, kids, history hoes always cite their sources! For this episode, Norm pulled from: Collins, Homer, and John Lehrberger. The Life and Death of Floyd Collins. Red, White & Blues FC | The World Cup Is Over and We're Not OkaySpain lifted the trophy, Argentina got what they deserved, FIFA gouged everybody blind — and we have to go back to just being Chelsea fans now.The World Cup's over, and Jason opened the show genuinely mourning the fact that he can't just be a fan of football anymore — he has to go back to being a fan of Chelsea. Before we get into it: yes, Morgan Rogers is coming to Chelsea, and no, we're not giving you our real take on that until Thursday's transfer roundup. Consider this the palate cleanser — one last love letter to a tournament that had no business being as good as it was. We both went in with expectations on the floor and walked out calling it an A+.Spain Were Just Better — One Goal the Entire TournamentWe're united as households on this one: shout out Spain. Daniel's big argument is the one he's been screaming at Blueco to copy since day one — you build from the back and you win by not letting the other team score. Spain conceded exactly one goal the whole tournament, ran a 19-year-old out at center back, let Unai Simón coast on one or two saves a game, and still found the goal when it mattered (that Nico Williams header back across for Ferran Torres was gorgeous). The final itself was a boring, ugly watch — Spain couldn't finish, Dibu Martínez put on one of the great World Cup final keeping performances and still lost because Argentina did, in Jason's words, absolutely jack all night. They didn't register a real shot in the first 90. They deserved nothing, and Enzo Fernández taking one for the team with that cartoon second yellow felt like poetry.FIFA, Infantino, and the Great Ticket HeistHere's where we go long and angry. Trump 80-year-old-manned the trophy presentation and nobody — not even Infantino sprinting back across the stage — could get him off it. That was the only prediction we nailed all tournament. From there it's the ticket scandal: FIFA running its own resale site for the first time, a whole Belgium-fan section mysteriously going on sale the day before the US–Belgium match at $1,600 a pop against a $60 face value, tier-two seats quietly getting “expanded” into what were really tier-three views. Canada forced FIFA to relist; the US gave them carte blanche. We put Infantino on a pace to out-corrupt Sepp Blatter and genuinely mean it.Funflation and the Fans Who Paid AnywayThe part that actually depresses us: people paid. Stadiums were full. And every dollar those fans coughed up just teaches FIFA it can charge more in four years — it's not if prices go up, it's how much. Jason walks through the “painted doors” idea (companies A/B testing what you'll tolerate) and “funflation,” the creeping cost of doing literally anything fun, from World Cup tickets to Ticketmaster concerts to $100 parking and $100 subway rides to a stadium built in a swamp you can't walk to. We admit it hit us personally — we'd planned to go for a couple years and priced ourselves out rather than be “World Cup broke” for the next two. Great tournament. FIFA gets zero credit for it.The Third-Place Classic, the Booth Wars, and Closing the Book on Messi & RonaldoThe stuff we loved: England vs. France in the third-place game, a ten-goal exhibition that turned into pure competitive pride once the players got going — Jason calls it better than the final. England going into the Azteca and beating Mexico. Cape Verde drawing Spain and going home heroes. On the booth: all hail Rebecca Lowe, and please, Paramount, give us Zlatan and Thierry Henry full-time and keep Alexi Lalas as far from a microphone as humanly possible. Stu Holden gets both barrels for narrating the obvious as if he has inside knowledge, and for the whole crew being so unready for a boring final they filled time talking about the weather. We close on the legends aging out — Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar waving goodbye while Mbappé's already passed them with two World Cups likely still ahead — plus the eternal USMNT reality check (Pulisic showed up for one game and vanished; stop with the Captain America stuff) and a quick debate over whether third-place stats should count. Verdict: two enthusiastic balls way up. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit redwhitebluesfc.substack.com

Goodbye Starmer, Hello Burnham | New UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham | Can He Succeed Where Keir Starmer Failed?Andy Burnham is Britain's new Prime Minister after replacing Keir Starmer as Labour leader, but will anything really change? In this episode of Mark and Pete, we ask the question millions of voters are already asking. Is this the fresh start Britain has been waiting for, or simply another change of face while the same old problems remain stubbornly parked on the nation's driveway?Burnham meets the King to be invited to form a government, beginning what could become one of the most closely watched premierships in recent history. We look at what brought Keir Starmer's time in office to an end, why Labour turned to Andy Burnham, and whether the new Prime Minister genuinely has a workable plan for Britain or merely a better sales pitch. We dig into the political realities behind the headlines. How secure is Burnham's position? Could he still be in Number 10 six months from now? What are his priorities on housing, immigration, the NHS, local government, policing and the economy? More importantly, can any Prime Minister realistically deliver meaningful change when expectations are sky high and public patience is, well, somewhere beneath the floorboards?Along the way we explore Britain's remarkable habit of changing Prime Ministers with alarming regularity. It almost feels as though Number 10 has become the political equivalent of a holiday cottage. Lovely address, but nobody seems to stay very long.As always, Mark and Pete go beyond the headlines with facts, context, statistics and plenty of good-humoured conversation. We don't simply repeat the news. We ask what it means, what might happen next, and what history suggests is likely to happen instead. Our Bible reflection comes from Psalm 146:3: "Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help." It's a timely reminder that while governments rise and fall, Christian hope rests somewhere far more secure than Westminster.Whether you're fascinated by British politics, interested in current affairs, or simply wondering if this latest chapter will finally bring stability, this episode offers thoughtful discussion with a little dry humour, a few surprising facts and, quite possibly, more optimism than the evening news can usually manage. Then again, that isn't setting the bar terribly high.

Is the Tour de France actually a circus, and how do riders survive the extreme heat? Plus, why you shouldn't put luggage on a race bike. This week, the whole gang is in the virtual studio to talk about everything happening in the cycling world right now. Logan Jones-Wilkins kicks things off with his firsthand account of the Tour de France and shares a radical take on why moving race start times to beat the heat is harder than it sounds. Then, Mike Levy pulls a listener question that sparks a debate on why we push gear testing past the 1,000-mile mark. That leads perfectly into a recap of the 200-mile Seattle to Portland (STP) event, where Lisa Charlebois pedaled a traditional round-tube metal bike while I coasted past on a fully-kitted aero Factor One. Finally, we break down my review of the Pinarello Dogma X and explain why its "endurance" label masks a bike that still fundamentally wants to race. In This Episode We Cover: The Tour de France: The reality of the circus and how the peloton handles scorching temperatures. Extreme Heat Strategies: Why starting races earlier isn't an easy fix, plus tips for surviving hot weather rides. Gear Testing: Why a saddle that feels great at 100 miles might fail at 1,000. The STP Ride: Aero bikes vs. round-tube metal frames over 200 miles. The Luggage Debate: Why race bikes and frame storage (or saddlebags) don't mix. I couldn't care less about one of these 2 Connors.  I'll let you decide which one, but I'll give you a clue.  It's the asxbag with the mohawk.Connor McGregor Mathers casting spells and trickery? Honey, who Hijacked the Kids? Is Nanotech in your blood, and everywhere else? Is it an interface with your devices? Are smart dust sensors all over, including within? What's that they're spraying above? Is this a final component to make us hackable animals? Are the devices you give your children changing them but not just by program influence? Is there a technological component that is altering their personality and sending information back and forth from their phones and the tech within them? Are the towers and their EMR frequency emissions also saturating our environment with manipulative power over how we think and treat one another? Parasitic tech is contaminating us all. To what extent is left to be determined.Connor Murphy is allegedly dead by drowning, and people [his so-called friends] who have no idea how to piece together a thought, and who themselves have no depth of character, are all chiming in to blame Connor's many odd personas and behaviors on Ayahuasca. That may have been the event, but it wasn't the cause. It was the experience derived from it, maybe. Remember you can't bronze a turd, and you can't level up in the spiritual caste system if you are a Hylic. You simply lack the essential component. Sand can't be water. It can be very troubling if you see too much, if you have even a short holiday out of the spell cast on your perception. Gnosis is something that bares some very unsettling realizations, as well as the self-actualization potential. The "remembering" of who you are. If you get sent the signal that you are an intruder and you don't belong in that realm of awareness, it may be detrimental. Not because you were mistaken, or hallucinating. But because you were more right than most everyone in the sense that you saw more truth and saw through more BS. The problem is when you have no actual escape route. Knowing is a curse to those still stuck in the snow globe, or the mouse maze.Let's see what's being posted and talked about on that there social media thingy. What is your feed dumping in your trough? Did you ask for it? Wouldn't you like to have more variety and less thought and perception manipulation by these sites? The 1920 Republican Convention in Chicago Guest: David Pietrusza The Republican Convention in Chicago was a sweltering "circus" where Warren G. Harding started with very low odds compared to favorites like Leonard Wood and Hiram Johnson. Harding initially ran for the presidency primarily to gain the "glamour" needed to protect his Senate seat in Ohio, doubting he could actually win the top spot. However, the leading candidates eventually reached a deadlock, hitting their "upper limits" and forcing the party to look for a compromise. Unlike the Democrats' more complex rules, the Republicans required only a simple majority for nomination. The final party platform was a masterclass in ambiguity, designed to satisfy both pro-League members like Taft and anti-League "irreconcilables." By saying very little of substance, the party managed to maintain a fragile unity, eventually selecting Harding as the candidate who could bridge the various factions of the GOP. (4)1919

Manga storytelling influence Joe Kelly recently mentioned how manga like One Piece can devote entire chapters to a single action sequence, something that's harder to replicate in American comics because of page counts and production realities. Is manga storytelling an influence on your work, and do you find yourself thinking about how to capture that same sense of scale and rhythm within Western comics? 2. Marvel and DC I recently spoke with Josh Williamson about writing Iron Man, and it was fascinating hearing how he's consulting on DC projects while also becoming part of Marvel's plans. Seeing creators move more freely between publishers these days, does that ever make you want to jump back into Marvel for another major project? 3. Harley Quinn and Joker The revelation that Joker is Harley's father completely reframes both characters. What made that the right relationship for the Absolute Universe, and what storytelling opportunities does it create that couldn't exist with their traditional dynamic 4. Designing Gotham's monsters Body horror and transformation have become defining visual elements of Absolute Batman. What are your guiding principles when reinventing characters like Poison Ivy, Clayface, and others while still making them instantly recognizable? 8. Absolute Batman animated series You're serving as showrunner on the newly announced Absolute Batman animated series. How does that creative role differ from making comics, and what has surprised you most about translating this version of Batman to animation? 10. Court of Owls Finally, the Court of Owls has entered the picture. Without spoiling anything, what can readers expect from your take on one of the most important Batman concepts you've ever created?

This week we're heading to Walnut Grove with "Circus Man," the episode that proves if a charming stranger shows up with a monkey, a few magic tricks, and some questionable miracle cures...everyone immediately forgets to ask for credentials. Academy Award winner Red Buttons guest stars as the lovable drifter Willie O'Hara, winning over the entire town—except Doc Baker, who isn't exactly thrilled to lose patients to a guy whose medical license appears to be "trust me." Which leads us to ask the eternal question: Is Doc Baker hot???Meanwhile, Laura is completely enchanted by Willie and becomes convinced he can perform real miracles when her beloved Jack is badly injured. It's a touching story about hope, faith, and learning that sometimes the greatest magic isn't sleight of hand—it's love, kindness, and people showing up when it matters most.Join us as we revisit one of the series' sweetest and most emotional episodes, celebrate Red Buttons' unforgettable guest performance, talk about Laura's unwavering belief in magic, and wonder how Walnut Grove somehow never developed a healthy skepticism of traveling salesmen. Then, join us on Patreon where Dean and Pamela talk about pragmatism vs. hope (and "woo woo"), and Dean gives us more fascinating behind-the-scenes details on how the show was made.Links and Resources:Haven't signed up for Patreon yet? We talk about his strong feelings on AI and what it's taking from photographers and creatives. Craig also shares what he believes is the single most important element of a great portrait — and it has nothing to do with your camera. She followed that up with '73 Dove Street' and 'Circus of Mirrors'. Her short film, 'Baby Cakes', won the Celtic Media Award and won at the Swansea Film Festival. She's inspired by finding the fiction in history, thoroughly researching a time, so she can dive right in and create her own world. Her new novel is 'Elizabeth and Marilyn', which takes us back to the summer of 1956. It looks at the intertwining lives of Queen Elizabeth II and Marilyn Monroe, two of the 20th Century's biggest icons, and why for a brief moment they were neighbours. We discuss how art inspires her writing, and reminds her she's done the hard stuff before.
