U of I in Champaign / Urbana in the 90's was typical of many satelite college towns to big cities with a happening urban center, dive bars and house parties for the indie scene to procreate within. Drummer Steve Lamos' band American Football was one of the bands within that scene that made a record for Polyvinyl Records, played a few shows then broke up -- except the lore and legend of that special debut album grew like crazy for the next 15 years. Reunion tours in 2014 and reissues all sold like wildfire. An appearance on NPR Tiny Desk Concerts puts the bands success into stark relief. Throughout it all Steve's drumming has added a jazz-influenced mathy component to the jangle and chime of their guitar lines, also punctuating many songs with his trumpet lines throughout their catalog. But even more impressive is his career as Professor of English and Writing at UC Boulder for the past 20 years. He's written extensively on something he calls Resonant Literacy as a way of listeners of music describing what they're hearing in esoteric and abstract ways. As American Football embarks this summer on tours of the US and Europe in celebration of the 25th anniversary of LP 1, Steve's living his best artistic life with more to come!

Nate Kinsella is a singer, multi-instrumentalist and song writer based in Brooklyn, NY. Since the mid 1990's he's has recorded, toured and or been a founding member of the bands Joan of Arc, American Football and Make Believe. His most recent project, Birthmark, has released a new LP titled Birth Of Omni, and is out now on Polyvinyl Records.  Birth Of Omni is a rich sonic tapestry of eclectic electro pop, close and textured vocals, and personal and experiential lyrics. Nate tells us about the familial logistics and focus required to make a solo record as a primary caregiver of two kids, how the process brought him closer to his true self and what the motivation behind Birth Of Omni was. Joe and Nate discuss the power of patience and “bravery” in creating something with limited time and the difference between making a record with a band vs. alone. The two share childhood stories of cooking things in the woods, Nate talks social nudity, roller-skating and we hear a few tunes. Today, on the podcast, there is a massive announcement. This morning, I launched a book publishing company called Washed Up Books. After two volumes of Anthology of Emo, I really felt there was more to do in this space and because of your support, it's time to make this a real thing.  Today, I'm proud to announce Red Letter Days, the debut novel from Matt Pryor from the Get Up Kids, New Amsterdams, and Terrible Twos. Today, it's available for preorder via WashedUpBooks.com or via our friends at PolyvinylRecords.com. And yes, it is available worldwide. Wherever you are in the world, you can get this! I thought it would be fun to recap the releases of Anthology of Emo and how we got to doing Red Letter Days with the designer Jesse Reed. Jesse's day job is Order, a design firm, Standards Manual book series, and in a fantastic band called Sharkswimmer, where he's the drummer. It'll make sense as you hear the episode. Jesse was invaluable to making these a reality, and we go into the story of how we started doing books and dive into books and music.  This is overwhelming to have happened. It's amazing to think someone like Matt Pryor, whom I idolized, has put pen to paper and written a fantastic series of stories that I have been waiting to tell you for so long.  Truly, thank you for the support on this podcast and the books. Shout out to everyone who helped make the Anthologies happen, Polyvinyl Records, Ian King, and many others… This is just the start of Washed Up Books.  Learn more about your ad choices. Today on the podcast are the members of Braid talking about their 25th Anniversary and tour for Frame & Canvas. I thought it'd be funny to interview them in order asking similar questions about the album, their feelings on resisting this record, the remixing of the album from J Robbins, and touring. What's amazing is everyone gave different answers and memories. Plus, the secret gem of the episode is worth listening through the whole thing I promise you. I had each person describe the other band members in one word. The answers they give are insightful, sweet, and hilarious. First up is Todd Bell, then Bob Nanna, Chris Broach, then finishing up with Damon Atkinson. What's amazing listening back to these interviews is how different everyone is but how they need a vote of 4 to decide anything as Braid. They're back, ready to rock again. Lastly, please stay for Damon's stories which had me laughing and a great set closer to the episodes. We hadn't spoken before for the pod, so we had a little extra time to chat. This was an absolute blast to do and put together. Thanks to Polyvinyl, Tito and the dudes for being game to have some fun.

Whether you hailed from Gainesville, Grand Forks or Green Bay in the late 90's, it wasn't rare to hear criss-crossing vocal shouts, razor-sharp guitars and drums with jazz-like precision, all blasting out of your local VFW hall. That's partly thanks to Braid, four modest Midwesterners who funneled their obsessions with Fugazi, Jawbox and Gauge through a roulette wheel of glorious rhythmic shifts and six-string swan dives. During their original run, the quartet were known to be workhorses, releasing new songs as immediately as they wrote them, and putting thousands of tour miles on the odometer. The culmination of these efforts took the shape of Frame & Canvas, their third album, released in 1998. Recorded and mixed in just five days, it became much more than a benchmark for Braid's then brethren; these twelve tracks grew to influence each punk rock generation (and variation) that followed, with Rolling Stone even listing it as one of the top five emo albums of all-time. On today's show, returning guests Bob Nanna (vocalist/guitarist), J. Robbins (engineer/producer) and Polyvinyl Records co-founder Matt Lunsford discuss the album sessions and original release, as well as the new 25th anniversary remix and remaster, along with mastering engineer Dan Coutant of Sun Room Audio. Longtime collaborators (and cousins) Mike and Nate Kinsella have played together in Joan of Arc, the Cap'n Jazz reunion shows, and the current iteration of American Football; they've worked together on Mike's solo albums as Owen; and now they've got a collaborative album under the name LIES out March 31 via Polyvinyl Records. It finds them leaning into new wave-era influences like Depeche Mode, The Cure, Peter Gabriel, and more, and embracing synthesizers, electronic drums, and other aesthetic choices that fall outside of American Football's usual wheelhouse, without abandoning what's made Mike Kinsella such a distinct songwriter for the past 25 years. On this episode of the BrooklynVegan podcast, Mike and Nate discuss the new LIES album, realizing they were both into punk as kids at a family party, and discovering their chemistry on the 2003 Joan of Arc tour. They also discuss Steve Lamos leaving and rejoining American Football, that time Nate fell asleep at an Owen show, that time Mike threw himself a roast for his 40th birthday party, and much more. Tired of pretentious music? Are you looking to just have fun and rock out? The good-time, make-you-move-and-groove medicine you're after is what White Reaper dispenses. The band's core was formed in 2012 when Louisville high schoolers Tony Esposito (guitar/vocals) and Nick Wilkerson (drums) started jamming as a duo. Then Nick recruited his twin brother Sam (bass) and Esposito added friend Ryan Hater (keys). And the fearsome foursome released their rowdy, ripping 2015 debut, White Reaper Does It Again, on Polyvinyl Records. Carrying forward their blend of lo-fi garage rock and pop-punk hooks, the quartet added second guitarist Hunter Thompson in 2016, before recording 2017's (tongue-in-cheek) The World's Best American Band. The glee blossomed with shinier, poppier melodies that soared over harmonized guitars—think crossing Cheap Trick with Thin Lizzy. The World's Best American Band graduated them to major label Elektra, where they earned studio time with producer Jay Joyce (Cage the Elephant, Halestorm, Eric Church, Carrie Underwood, Emmylou Harris). With Joyce providing a slicker, tighter sound, the quintet unveiled an even catchier package that employs the sheen of peak Cars and early Maroon 5 in danceable tracks like "Might Be Right" and "Eggplant." (The former earned them a No. 1 slot on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart.) But rock purists still got to stomp and howl with the hard drivin' "Headwind" and redlining "Raw." Hours before their headlining gig at Nashville's Exit/In, White Reaper's Esposito and Thompson checked in with PG to talk tone. The guitar duo showed us how the rigors of the road have impacted their touring gear decisions and why COVID-19 handcuffed one of them to the digital life. Another installment of one of my favorite types of episodes, where I chat with people who don't identify as Christian. Often times, I also don't believe in the God that they don't believe in. Joey Holman (ex-Cool Hand Luke) is one half of the Polyvinyl Records duo Man on Man, alongside his boyfriend Roddy Bottum (Faith No More). He grew up in a broken home outside Atlanta, found Evangelical Christianity in his teens, experienced dissonance around his gay sexuality, and eventually did some therapy and gained a lot of insight about his journey. I truly enjoyed our wide-ranging conversation. Joey Holman and Roddy Bottum are  Man on Man.  They've spent most of the pandemic traveling from New York to LA, caring for their mothers and writing their first musical collaboration.  But Man on Man is more than music, it has a strong visual aspect that expresses body positivity that has resonated with the queer community.  There is also a communal component called Chosen Family,  which serves as a platform for community support, activism and it aims to bring people together through art and real human engagement.  In this episode Joe, Joey and Roddy talk about the good and bad habits they've developed over the last year,  the hard work and responsibility the Man on Man record has brought to their lives and what their plans are in the near future.  We hear a couple tunes from the new record and Joey and Roddy tell us what they've been listening to.  Enjoy. Episode sponsored by Izotope, Izotope.comMusic by Man on Man and Joe Plummer

Filmmaker Mark Duplass speaks with Kyle Meredith about Volcano, I’m Still Excited, the band he fronted in the early 2000’s whose debut EP has been re-released on Polyvinyl Records. Duplass takes us back through the history of the group, which found him switching to keyboards after spending the '90s as “an overly earnest singer-songwriter." He also discusses his influences, his classical music upbringing, and ultimately his decision to leave it all behind to make movies. Even so, Duplass shares how he applies what he learned during those years to film projects that he’s worked on over the past couple decades. Follow on Facebook | Podchaser | Twitter

Yumi Zouma - “Cool for a Second” from the 2020 album Truth or Consequences on Polyvinyl. Dream pop quartet Yumi Zouma have returned with the new album Truth or Consequences, their first for new label Polyvinyl Records but their third overall.  Today's Song of the Day is a swoon-inducing electro-pop piece with an '80's-style beat. It's hard to believe the song was almost scrapped. Ryder explained, via a press release, "The song was demoed in Los Angeles and then long forgotten, destined for the scrap heap. A spark of inspiration from Josh in the introduction reestablished that for us, the most conspicuous of melodies are often hidden in modest beginnings.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show.

David Bazan has always been on my list to be on the podcast, it just took almost 8 years. I always sorta thought he’d want nothing to do with me or the podcast. As with this stuff, I got over it and just asked. It worked and fittingly, David has also resurrected Pedro the Lion, with the first album under that name in 15 years. The album “Phoenix” out on Polyvinyl Records, is an amazing return. David and I speak about his religious upbringing, lots of Fugazi and we talk a lot about what music does to us when we close our eyes. Specifically that journey that music takes us on and what story you end up telling in the end. I think you’ll enjoy and I was nervous for a lot of this. I don’t know why, just meant a lot I guess. For two decades, Collections of Colonies of Bees have existed in various forms and incarnations, beginning with Chris Rosenau and Jon Mueller (who split time with post-rock band Pele). From there, the line-up grew and evolved. At one time, Nick Sanborn — currently in the spotlight as one-half of Sylvan Esso — counted himself as a member. At another, the group joined forces with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon to release two albums under the moniker Volcano Choir. (In fact, it was Vernon who proclaimed of his collaborators: “If the world was perfect, they would be as big as U2.”) Never content to paint the soundscape twice, the previously instrumental Bees now come outfitted with vocalist Marielle Allschwang and a new full-length, HAWAII, that finds the Wisconsin-based ensemble harvesting the fertile intersection between experimental and pop to maximum effect. DC’s Mike James and Mollie Ames discuss: We told you LeBron James was the greatest, and somehow he keeps getting greater. Drake being the "Ambassador to the World" for the Raptors sounds as empty and phony as his brand of hip-hop. Mike travels east from Collinwood and discovers Will-billy land and its Will-billies. We're not saying Mayfield is all that comparable to Johnny Manziel, but dude sure is awfully small for the NFL. Will Baker Mayfield "earn his stripe"? We present further evidence to confirm that DJ Khaled is as backwards and stupid as he is fat and talentless. With more strikeouts recorded than hits for the month of April, the first time in all of MLB history where that's ever been the case, you'd think baseball would be taking the tested and factual accusation made by Trevor Bauer this past week a lot more seriously. Is it time to freak out about how bad the Tribe's bullpen is? Mike's conversation with Yan Gomes about the most important improvement Clevinger has made that's allowing him to be such a "BEEEEAAASST!" this season. Mollie defines one of the qualities it takes to make you a "Will-billy", and don't you dare call her one, even though she's from Will-billy Land and smells like pickles because of her washing bucket. Enough with sacrifice bunts! Michael breaks down the very simple facts behind why sacrificing with a runner on 2nd with no outs only historically results in less runs scored. Plain and simple. All this and so much more on this episode of the Defend Cleveland Podcast.
